Subject: [*] BrewMeister v1.0, homebrew software for Macintosh

Attached please find the FREEWARE BrewMeister v1.0 by Frank and Becky
Grimaldi. There is a serious lack of shareware/freeware homebrew software
for the Macintosh. This software is a beer "recipe database and recipe
analysis tool" according to the readme. I just got this from a friend who
got it on Compuserve. (Thanks, Lance!) I've scanned it with Disinfectant
3.5, but haven't used it yet.

It is geared more to the "all-grain" (scratch if you will) homebrewer,
rather than the extract brewer. Calculates original and final gravities,
potential alchohol, IBUs, and Color. Looks pretty decent if you are into
homebrew and use a Mac, especially since there isn't much other shareware
available.

I am not the author.

Kill Windows 1.1

Ever gone to shut down your Mac, and wished there was a quick way to close
all open windows? Well now there is, and you can also express anti-Microsoft
sentiments at the same time!

Kill Windows is a tiny little AppleScript application that tells the Finder
close all your open windows.

What You Need:

You should be using at least System 7.5, with the AppleScript Extension and
the Finder Scripting Extension running.

Changes since version 1.0:

* Eliminated the "Close all open windows?" dialog box which means less work
for you and faster window closing.

Thanks to Mason Loring Bliss for the suggestion.

Kill Windows is email-ware. Email me if you like it.

Enjoy!

Subject: [*] MacStim 2.2.1

MacStim is a Macintosh application which I originally designed for our own
stimulus presentation needs at the Beth Israel Hospital in fMRI. It has
grown in "power" considerably since then. It will present PICTs, sounds,
QuickTime movies or text according to a script which you create using a
simple text editor like interface (the Script Editor). The most
complicated part of MacStim is the script window's fields which determine
how MacStim presents these stimuli, times and responds to user events.

The aim of many experiments is to present stimuli, and then get a
response from the subject (a button press, or mouse click, voice-activated
sound,
serial port or NuBus trigger event which I call user or stop events).
MacStim will
then record a reaction time (from onset of the stimulus) and move on to
the next part of the experiment.

It is shareware, so if you want it to work without the time limit
restriction, then you can follow the instructions provided in the text file
accompanying or read the on-line help on how to register (which is done by
email or fax after you have organized payment). Currently, the full
version price is US$299 (most people have said it's worth it!) which compares
very favorably with other software solutions for this sort of thing.

If I can give you any more information to assist in your decisions, or have
specific needs which would fall within MacStim's broad abilities which you
would like me to include, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Enjoy!

Subject: [*] Matrix maker 2.6

This update replaces "matrix-maker-251.hqx". This StuffIt binhexed archive
file contains "Matrix maker 2.6", the new version of Matrix maker, a
Macintosh application designed for the easy creation and formatting of
twelve-tone matrices (12 x 12 arrays) used in the composition and/or
analysis of twelve-tone music.

This application is designed for use with Microsoft Word for the Macintosh.

The package consists of the following eight items:

1) the "Matrix maker 2.6 (fat)" application, a "fat" binary application
containing
both Macintosh 68K and PowerPC native code
2) a folder labeled "for MSW 6 users" (contains the "Matrix formatter 2.6
script" AppleScript application)
3) a folder labeled "for MSW 5.1 users"
4) the "Matrix maker 2.6 script" AppleScript application mentioned above
5) a sample output file labeled 'sample "matrix.txt"'
6) a sample output file labeled 'sample "header.txt"'
7) this ReadMe file
8) a sample of the "finished product", labeled 'sample "matrix output"'.

Each of the two MSW folders contains the files necessary to use "Matrix
maker 2.6 (fat)" with the appropriate word-processing application.
Documentation in each folder, created in that Word application, describes
in detail the proper procedure in each case.

If you have neither Word 5.1 nor Word 6.x, you may still be able to use the
"Matrix maker 2.6 (fat)" application, as long as your word-processing
application allows text-to-table conversions. Check your word-processor's
manual to determine whether or not this will be possible.

This package may be included on CD-ROM releases.

Subject: [*] Midi Utils

midiBox is the first MidiShare midifile dropbox that I know of. Just drop
a midifile on it and it plays. midiBox has trouble with some file formats.
I'm working on it.

ZapModem clears the modem port. Mine gets stuck after a midi crash. Put
an alias of it in your Startup Folder. It needs "Terminal Settings" to be
in the same folder as it. If you use it with C->midi, name it so that it
loads before C->midi.

C->midi tests your MidiShare setup by playing a middle C out the current
MidiShare port. Just double click on it, or put it in your Startup Folder.

New Version - 1.0b2 - Fixes some bugs - 29 February, 1996

The Mutatron(tm) adds spikes to 3DMF meshes using QuickDraw 3D and
displays 3DMF objects in various QuickDraw 3D styles. It can also
create a number of basic shapes, like a torus, sphere, cylinder, cone,
ellipsoid, beanoid, bananoid, etc. The Mutatron has a Bananoid editor,
a Spike Editor, and it can add vertex normals to a mesh and map
pictures over a mesh with uv-parameters. The Mutatron requires
QuickDraw 3D 1.0.3, which requires a Power Mac with at least 16MB RAM.

See Web pages at http://web2.airmail.net/dmgreer/.

Found virus free by Disinfectant 3.6.

Change History

The Mutatron v1.0b2 - 29 Feburary, 1996
1. Added code to alert user and exit application if QuickDraw 3D is not
installed.
2. Eliminated crashing on view hints.
3. Eliminated crashing on non-mesh objects.
4. Eliminated some memory leaks.

Subject: [*] Unmute-it 0.1 Use speaker _and_ headphone

Unmute-it version 0.1.
Copyright (c) Signature Software Ltd.
Program by Tony Copping.

*Freeware*

Do you have this problem? I have a 7100AV, with the headphone jack
in the back. I also have a blaster with a CD input. Its nice to
be able to use the blaster for hi-fi sound output, but I also
like to use my blaster for music while I work.

The problem is that the Mac also tries to behave like a stereo,
in that it mutes the speaker when you plug a jack into the
headphone output. The good news is that this behavior on the Mac
is done in _software_. Instead of crawling around to the back of
the machine and unplugging the headphone jack, you can open the
sound control panel, and uncheck the "Mute" checkbox for the
Built-in sound output driver. Of course having to open the sound
control panel whenever you reboot is almost as much of a pain as
physically unplugging the jack.

Unmute-it is a simple application program which you may want to put
in your startup items folder. It sets the mute value "off" for the
internal speaker, allowing sound to be played through the internal
speaker, even when the headphone jack is in use. By using Unmute-it
you need to use the sound control panel only when you really need to.

Requires Sound Manager 3.0 or better.

The current version of "FreePPP", a variant of MacPPP, supports
PAP. I don't use it, since my ISP doesn't support PAP, but I
use the PAP authentication dialog for username and password

Do you mean offline reading of news groups or email? I don't recall=
off-hand what QWK is, but here are the offline-capable programs I'm aware o=
f:

Eudora allows offline reading & writing of email. It's available in both=
commercial and shareware/freeware versions; the commercial version has=
extra features, of course.

NewsHopper is a commercial newsreader program which allows offline reading &=
writing of news group messages. You can get a demo version of it which is=
fully functional, except that you can subscribe to only 5 newsgroups. I've=
been trying it out, and I'm thinking of buying the full version. Check out=
their home page at http://www.demon.co.uk/sw15.

TCP/Connect II is a commercial product which combines email, news reader,=
ftp, and (I think) a web browser. I tried it out, but I didn't like it. =
In particular, offline news reading doesn't work the same as online news=
reading -- instead, it's treated like email with a different folder for=
each group, and you had to use an Open File dialog to open a group. You=
can download it for a 30-day free trial (after getting a password from=
them). I don't have the web site info handy, but you can try emailing them=
at [email protected].

According to Apple's Tech Info Library
(), LaserWriter Bridge will _not_ work
with Open Transport. This means that LaserWriter Bridge will not work with
the Power Mac 7200, PM 7500, PM 8500, or PM 9500. LW Bridge will work with
the PM 7100 (I've tried it), and I expect with the PM 6100 and PM 8100,
since they don't use OT.

I suspect that LaserWriter Bridge will require a rewrite in order to work
with OT and, again according to TIL, Apple has not even announced the
_intention_ of making LaserWriter Bridge compatible with OT. My own
personal opinion is that _if_ Apple does get around to rewriting LW Bridge,
they won't do it until after they have finished Apple Remote Access 3.0
(and rumour has it that release of ARA 3.0 has now slipped to sometime in
1997).

According to Apple Canada's Technical Response Group, LocalTalk Bridge will
not work with Open Transport either.

You might want to check out Farallon's products: PowerPath and LocalPath;
but I suspect that they too suffer from the same problem of not being Open
Transport compatible.

If anyone knows of a product which does what LaserWriter Bridge does, and
_is_ compatible with OT, I would really like to hear about it.

Ed, There were several reviews in the major Mac magazines...I believe one
of them did a comparison of Word & CW. As a user of both, I can tell you
that if you need high end word processing (e.g. TOC, Indexes) then CW won't
cut it. If your needs are more like the average user, then CW is probably
good enough as a word processor. Its primary advantage is the relatively
seamless integration of WP, Draw, Paint, DB, QT moview, & Spreadsheets. CW
is NOT nearly as RAM or HD hungry as Word.

The patch is a bit old, it was written for 7.1.x, and I was surprised and
happy when it worked on my SO's LC475 ;-) under 7.5...

But there's something better now.

At support.apple.com, and other Apple fpt/www sites, in the /utilities
area, is Display Software 2.0, the Apple Multiscan display package upgraded
from v.1.2 or thereabouts. And in this package, from the 7.5 2nd update
(which is probably also out as I write this;-), is Control Strip 1.3, a
_universal_ control strip. Only other change from the earlier
versions--along with working on desktop models--is that you can set the
font... a useful feature...

Hope this helps!

Subject: Data Recovery Toolkit-A Horror Story?

**** Please post this response next to Howard Deutch's letter reagarding
Toolkit
_______________________________

In regards to Howard Deutch's agonizing report of abuse by my company
and our product, Data Recovery Toolkit, I think it is appropriate that
some reality and truth be applied...

1. Howard fails to tell you that he knew, in advance of purchasing the
product, that it was not returnable once installed. He even signed off
on his credit card slip which contains the return/refund policy, which
clearly states "Software not returnable once opened or installed. A copy
of which is available for anyone requiring verification.

2. Howard purchased the software to recover data from his volume which
"just had software problems". His statement that he "described his
problem and asked if they thought Data Recovery Toolkit could recover
data from my crashed drive" is a lie. He stated to us that the volume
"was fine physically". Our salespeople do not give diagnosis of
effectiveness over the phone.

3. When Howard called and told us that the product did not work, we
asked to see the drive and his software. We have an overwhelming amount
of testimonials stating how pleased purchasers of Toolkit have been with
the product, so when Howard expressed concern, we offered to look at the
drive for no charge. He neglects to tell you the time and expense we
donated to him. And remember the "software only" problem he assured us
of? Well it ends up that he FORMATTED the drive. If he had, at any time,
stated this we could have told him nothing was going to recover his
data. He was not charged for the engineer's evaluation time or return
air shipping to him. Did he mention that he called no less than five
times during the day we had his drive? Right up front he was told that
we would need at least a day to eval the disk and the software. Oh
well...

4. He took Toby Moore's advice of complaining about us to MacWorld. We
have provided them with his copy of the sales draft which contains our
return policy. He has complained to the BBB herre in Colorado Springs.
He has threatened us with lawsuits and slander. He has and continues to
do everything he can to convince people that we have done him wrong,
while all the time he has neglected to state the facts. When he
submitted his complaint to MacWorld, he did so under the guise of
"Jefren Publishing Company" Why? His letterhead says "Howard E. Deutch,
Attorney at Law", being an attorney, he is in a great position to persue
any wrong-doing or abuse. He should have a clear understanding of the
law, which would works to his advantage. Why has he not filed a lawsuit
against us or other legal methods of satisfying a his alleged
mis-justice? Instead he has resorted to submitting lies and accusations.
The reason is that we have not done aything wrong and he knows it.
Otherwise, being the Lawman that he is, he would have dealt with us in
the appropriate manner. I have about five letters on file containing
threats of financial damage and prosecution. He has done nothing to live
up to his threats other than what he has written. I have, and continue
to challenge him to live up to the threat of liability. He won't take us
on because he knows we are innocent. If I am a liar he can prove it. I
can prove everything that I am stating. I have complete documentation
and supporting paperwork to my statements, and I will happily fax them
to any concerned individual.

5. Howard created problems with our extensions that we were not able to
recreate in the lab or from his master disk.

Howard, the Lawyer and Howard the Publisher, is a liar and has not told
you any of the truth or facts regarding his business with us. He appears
to be a con artist with the intentions of using the media and the
internet as a vehicle for his lies in effort to coerce us into
compliance since he has no other vehicle available to him. I will not be
strong-armed or manipulated by him, and my position with him remains the
same...I have lived up to my end of the agreement and know it is his
turn to shut-up and do the same. Crying to everyone and lying is not
going to change my position.Let me re-iterate that anybody wishing
documentation will be supplied it, all of it. You will be able to verify
the truth. Thank you for your time, and I am truly sorry that this
resource is being used in this fashion.

Subject: ethernet address (Q)

I just recieved a brand spankin' new PowerWave box.

I luv it much, but I am currently puzzled as I go through
setting it up. I need to know the ethernet hardware address
in order to register it with the DNS folks here. In the
past, with older macs, I had two ways to get the ethernet
address.

1) With MacTCP, click on the ethernet icon in the control panel
while holding the option key.

2) Run TattleTech, which displays the ethernet hardware address
along with a billion other bits of information.

However, neither technique seems to work on this new machine.

First of all, I could find nothing in the Open Transport TCP/IP
AppleTalk panels that would lead me to this info. The OT/TCP
Configuration Notes if found on the web don't mention this at
all either.

Next, I replaced Open Transport with plain old MacTCP 2.0.6 and
tried the option-click trick. No dice. No number appeared.

Finally, I tried TattleTech and get 'NA' as the address.

Has anybody else out there wrestled with this problem and come
up with an answer they'd like to share?

Please CC: a response directly if you can, though I should
eventually see it in the digest as well.

Thanks in advance.

You might want to check out CommuniGate by Stalker Software
([email protected]), available on Info-Mac. It does work with other
existing servers, but it will also let you check your mail (i.e., log in
from elsewhere across the 'net) via POP3 and will send your mail via SMTP.
You can actually try out the demo versions. You'll need the server, the
client, and POPGate and SMTPGate at a minimum.

It does a lot more than that; 5-user local e-mail is free, and the other
modules (fax, pager, etc.) are reasonably priced.

This is very unlikely to be your problem, but just in case--have you by
chance installed and run Hard Disk Toolkit lately?

I ask because the recurrent "Shutdown improperly" message was the first
symptom I noticed when HDT locked my boot disk one day a few months ago.
(Of course, other symptoms rapidly became manifest.)

The deal is, on versions of HDT which were current as of, say, last summer,
the command that HDT used to scan your SCSI bus was the same command that
system 7.5.1 used to lock the boot disk. Run it once and POW, you were
up a creek. The reason I say it's very unlikely that this is your problem
is that, in most cases, you would notice almost instantly if your boot
disk became locked (as soon as you tried to write something to it, for
instance). In my case it was a little while before I realized it, because
I was exclusively writing to and from removable media cartridges. I was
aware that weird things were going on with my hard drive but I wasn't
completely unable to work on that particular project, so it was a little
while before I caught on.

Anyway, if by chance this should be your problem, FWB posted a little
application to enable their customers to reverse the damage. If you think
you might need it, e-mail me and I'll dig up the address where I down-
loaded it from. (No, my degree isn't in English.;))

Timothy,

I have been working with a 7200/90 with the same problem, and I found that
if you use the Network Software Installer and install the Network Control
panel you will be able to use the LaswerWriter Bridge.

You must have the Network control panel, and the AppleTalk control panel
both set to use Ethernet, and then the Bridge works.

Sort of strange, but it worked.

Subject: LPD client for Macintosh

Greetings;

I am in need of locating a software LPD client for the Macintosh for campus
wide use. I am aware of ones that work fine under WindowsXX but I would
like to have a 'clean' solution for the Macintosh users on our campus. I
have found little support or knowledge of such an item on our campus and
would like to know if anyone else knows of or has such as software package.
I have checked the 'sharware' versions that I could find at UMich and
Info-Mac sites but they have limitations that disqalify them as usable.
My last resort may be to obtain source code for one of them and adapt it to
our needs but I don't want to reinvent the wheel if there is such an item
already avaliable.

Primary condition:
-- Must be able to interpret and accept straight LPR output as a
character and control code stream as sent from a UNIX system. Once the LPR
output has been spooled, it should then use some function to print the
output to the selected printer in the Chooser. The shareware versions only
would accept postscript -- if anyone knows of a 'filter' that can be put on
the UNIX system to do a conversion that would be graciously accepted as
well!!
-- It also needs to be able to 'ignore' certain erroneous error codes
or control sequences that are not LPR standard or at least have a user
configuration of turning off some type of 'error checking'. I generally
don't want the software to 'hang' on the user... this may lie in the area
of stripping control characters and reformatting the text to fit the page.

Additonal "Would be Nice" features are:
-- allow stripping of extraneous control characters
-- allow user to configure multiple LPD queues (with a reasonable limit)
-- allow font and page setup information to be assigned to each
individual queue

I would also be interested in a hardware solution and I am already aware of
the following: GatorPrint from Cayman Systems, Lantronics LPD boxes, and
possibly the use of the JetDirect cards in HP Printers. If you have
experience with any of the above or know of something that might also work
please let me know. I do want these solutions to be 'relatively
inexpensive' (who doesn't??) but I want the users to be able to choose what
works for them and possibly their department.

Again, as noted above, if anyone knows of or has a 'filter' that can be put
on the UNIX system to do a conversion from 'raw character data' to
postscript that would be graciously accepted as well!!

Thanks in advance,
Anwaar Bhatti.

Subject: Multiple questions

Please excuse the grocery list, but I have a number of questions:

1. I currently access my internet account through 2 different systems.
One works great, but the other one (which is much lesser used) causes me
some problems. I am using InterSlip on a Performa 6116CD (Power Mac 6100)
with a Global Village Teleport Gold II modem. It works erratically at
best, and never at the full possible speed. If I set the modem speed to
19200 in InterSlip it never connects. Dropping it down to 9600 makes it
work, most of the time. But even then, my connection will get dropped at
some point. I mainly use this system to check e-mail and it usually will
drop while downloading mail. The modem init string is set to AT&F1, per
the manual for high speed connections. I have tried playing with the
settings in the Teleport control panel, to no avail. Obviously I would
prefer to utilize the full possible speed of the modem. I have read many
people heartily recommend Global Village modems, so I can only assume you
all know something I don't. Any pointers?

2. I have recently purchased an Apple TV/Video card and 28.8 modem for my
main system. These were installed on the same day, so I can't say for sure
if the problem would exist with any modem, as I sold my old 14.4 modem.
Anyway, the problem is that if I have Apple Video Player running, and try
to do something with the modem, the system will hang. I feel pretty sure
this is due to the extreme processor requirements of the high speed modem
and Video Player. However, the manual and the Apple Tech Support library
make no mention that using both of these is impossible. Perhaps I simply
need more memory (I have 8 MB, System 7.5.1) or there is some other piece
of software that is causing a conflict. Any advice will be appreciated.
Also, is there any way to capture audio only from the TV/Video card? I
know that you can capture a movie with sound.

3. I am in interested in setting up a LocalTalk network at home. I
realize that the standard phone uses the two inside wires and that
LocalTalk uses the two outside wires. What I'm wondering is if there are
any kind of adapters that will let you simply plug a splitter into the
phone jack, with one side for telephone and the other for LocalTalk. If
not, where is a good source for a double wallplate? Although I do have
experience with LocalTalk in a pre-wired environment (normal and passive
star), any other pointers would be appreciated as well.

4. Is it possible to use Eudora as a local e-mail solution? This would be
for a passive star LocalTalk network for internal communication only.
Access to other systems or the internet are unnecessary. If not, are there
any other shareware or freeware solutions? BTW, I am aware of EasyMail,
but the Hypercard overhead is too much for some of our users.

5. Regarding the aforementioned passive star LocalTalk network, I have
read not to over-terminate the network. I believe that the indication is
to only use around 4 terminators. However, we are using many more than
that and have been having no problems. Can anyone tell me what "the law"
is regarding termination on this type of network?

6. I've read much in the digest about Texture Installer, but I have been
unable to locate it in the archives. Does anyone know where it can be
found?

Due to the large number of questions, it would probably be best to reply
directly to me. If anyone is interested in the responses I might get,
e-mail me and I'll let you know what I've found out. Thanks for your help!
It's greatly appreciated!

Greetings,
In response to your request above,
there was another response someone gave to you saying the PowerMac 7100 is
a good deal. Well, it is, and you also only get a 2 speed CD-ROM drive
with that. Many games today require higher 4 speed CD-ROM.
So if you really want the 4 speed CD-ROM expect to add $300 to the price
tag of the 6100, 7100, 8100. I would recommend actually getting the
Performa 6300. It has a 4 speed CD-ROM, 28.8 modem, and 16MB of RAM. It
also comes preloaded with software which you may or may not need. But so
does the Powerwave come with unnecessary software. It has been my
experience that the software loaded is usually older versions of current
software, and demos that run out in 30 days! The PowerPC 7200 is also a
good deal, and is well worth looking into. The only problem with it, is
that it is a pain to set up the internet on it, but I have found the trick
to do it (e-mail me back if you need help with that).
Hope this helps.

You might consider Easy View, which reads not only Info-Mac Digest, but any
other setext-formatted document, including TidBITS (and DealBITS), the text
version of Info-Alley and the digest versions of most listserv lists. With
BBEdit extensions, it also allows you to auto-reply to digest items via
Eudora (that's how I created this reply).

It presents two windows at the top, one listing the documents or
chapters/major headings within documents (click on the one you want, or
navigate with the left/right arrow keys), the other listing the articles or
minor headings in the selected document (click on the ones of interest, or
navigate with the up/down arrow keys).

You can also write your own setext documents quite easily, and they're easy
for others to read with or without Easy View. Basically, you make major
headings by following the line with an equal number of "="; minor headings,
"-". For example (indented to avoid messing up THIS digest!) :

This is a Chapter/Major Heading
===============================

This is a Minor Heading
-----------------------

There are also mechanisms for making plain text appear as bold, underlined,
italic, etc., in EasyView (e.g., this would display *bold*, this would
display _underlined_). Try it; you may love it. It's available on your
favorite Info-Mac mirror.

Hope this helps. Cheers!

Subject: Performa 637 and startup screens

Greetings all. I have had an anoying 'feature' in my Performa 637 ever
since it
was new. When I try to use a startupscreen by placing it in the system
folder,
the image flashes briefly on the screen when I first boot up, but then
goes away
as the icons for the extensions start to appear. This happened both
under system 7.5 and
7.5.1. I have done this successfully in my centris 610 with sys 7.5.1.
I am at a loss,
could it be a result of the 63x series video circuitry (although I do
not have the tv/video card).
Is there a way to get around this? (Aside of using Res Edit)

Thanks.

Thank you to all of you (Christian Buser, Alun Carr, Bill Cummins ,

Parker, Eric Schweitzer) who answered my question about Postscript files.
You were all very helpful. Having been away for a while it is only this
week that I got to read all your messages.

A summary follows of all the answers:

To print: use DropOff*ps, bbedit printps extension, Apple
LaserWriter utility, DropPS (free from Adobe) and from within the
application select "Download PS file". I downloaded DropPS
(ftp://ugle.unit.no//pub/mac/util/DropPS.sit.hqx)
which supports Drag and Drop, and it works perfectly. You can also find
DropPS and DropOff*PS in the Info-Mac archives
(.../info-mac/prn/drop-off-ps.hqx, .../info-mac/prn/drop-ps-113.hqx)

To view: ViewPS, that I had tried unsuccessfully, is not based on a
recent version of Ghostscript. Use the Mac GS Viewer which is the official
GS port to the Mac (GS version 3.33)
(ftp://ftp.cs.wisc.edu//pub/ghost/aladdin/mac/)
There are 68K and PPC versions of the viewer. There is also a manual. I
used the 68K version on my Mac IIci. It is not very good but readable. I
have yet to check the PPC version at work on a PPC 9500. Other suggestions
were to use GhostScript found in Info-Mac archives (
.../info-mac/prn/mac-gs-252b3.hqx).

You might also consider Connectix's PowerBook Utilties (CPU) or Desktop
Utilities (CDU), which do this, among many other things, such as providing
keyboard equivalents for all menus, menu items, and dialog radio buttons,
check boxes, and buttons, plus startup security and more.

For example, on my Duo, I press shift-control-f to make the File menu drop
down; then just "a" to Save As..., which often has no keyboard command key.
Shift-control-leftArrow drops the Apple menu; various letter keys then
launch a DA, open a folder, or whatever.

Shift-control-rightArrow drops the right-hand menu of running applications;
then for example "h" hides the current application or "o" hides other apps;
and "f" will switch you to the Finder, or "w" to Word, etc. After a while,
you can get very quick with this kind of keyboard navigation.

They might have a web page (perhaps www.connectix.com?). Hope this helps.

Tex-Edit Plus v1.6.4 (the latest, I believe) is a solid text editor that
can "save as" text and picts in a single document as a Simpletext
read-only file (the person viewing it would have to have SimpleText).
Cost is $5.

DOCMaker v4.5 is a very popular app that creates self-running files with
text, pictures, sound, and more; you can modify it to prevent copying
(nothing's completely secure, though). Cost is $25.

Museum v1.1 (I think; the prior version is 0.6) creates a simple,
self-running viewer for text, pictures, and sound, with navigation
buttons; it also can be locked. Cost $30.

eDOC v1.1.1 is a nice app that creates self-running "portable" documents
with text and pictures (viewing requires the small eDOC reader, and
there's also an eDOC Creator extensions). Cost is $25.

Other programs include Belgian Postcards, Print2PICT, and various
Hypercard-based apps. I'm sure there are others. If you want to go
cross-platform, by the way, you might consider Common Ground or Adobe
Acrobat. Some, if not all, of these programs are available on Info-Mac.

Subject: SE/30 and monitors

I know this was discussed at one stage last year, but I'm afraid I didn't
pay enough attention then. My parents have an SE/30 & now they've decided
that they really do need a larger monitor for it. I've suggested buying a
good (SVGA) monitor, so that they can use it when they (eventually,
hopefully this century!) upgrade to a newer Mac.

I seem to recall a discussion about accelerator cards for the SE/30. Do we
need a card to run an external colour monitor? I'm not looking for
millions of colours, so it doesn't matter if the full capabilities of the
monitor wait until we've a machine to handle them. A few more than black &
white would do! My mom's just sick of scrolling all the time to see her
invoices...

My questions are:
* do we need an accelerator just to run the monitor?
* or is that only if we want lots & lots of colours?
* roughly how much do such things cost?

What about PC monitors? Connection difficulties?

I'd particularly appreciate hearing from anyone who actually has this up &
running.

Thanks in advance,
Tara

Christian, if I could write such apt & concise questions...!

It could be a munged system file/extension/font file. I've experienced the
same problem for all of these reasons, but I'm also unhappy about the
experiences I've had with SCSI Director, and _changing_ the driver could be
a very good next step... going to a more reliable source for a formatter...

I'm sure also you've been tempted by both LeCie's Silverlining (now at
5.6.x?) and FWB's Hard Disk Toolkit (1.8s). [The usual disclaimers here.]
Neither are perfect, but for my $$ at any rate both these products are so
well supported--though their customer support is not necessarily better
than Transoft's--that they beat out the competition.

Silverlining at 5.5.6 (System 7.1.x) had a problem updating its control
panel after a change of handshake selection, but I think that's been fixed.
And HDT continues to "eject" other mounted partitions of a removable drive
if one partition is dismounted. But these would be my only complaints
about either product.

For taking over a drive though HDT gets my vote. HDT Primer does the job
more elegantly, more transparently. I suppose it's fair to say--though I
have loved Silverlining--that HDT has a neater interface, and is a much
more complete suite of drive utilities.

If you do decide to change, don't forget it's best to backup completely,
and use the new utility to _format_ the drive, as well as installing its
own driver. Having done this of course you'll be reinstalling the system,
and if the cache flushing/Shutdown Check file problem persists, you've
narrowed the problem down to extensions and fonts... and have a better set
up drive into the bargain, with a format utility you can really trust.

Hope this helps, do let us know how you go with this one! (Plagued me for a
couple of weeks, and I was already using FWB's latest... ;-)

As previously mentioned, Thunder 7 works quite nicely, but I'll offer a
couple of alternatives:

Spelling Coach Professional from Deneba works in the same manner as Thunder
7, and sells for about the same price. And, if you're using Eudora Pro,
you already have Spellswell-- To use it, go to Edit -> Add Word Service and
