The bad news this week is that Apple announced big losses and
anticipates laying off employees. The good news is that there's
positive stuff happening in the Macintosh world anyway! We have
news about Netscape betas, ShareDevil, and Shockwave, plus Adam
reports on an Apple Internet Marketing dinner. Tonya details a
few photo-related products from Macworld Expo, and Geoff offers
a detailed report on the beta of Microsoft's Internet Explorer

Subject: (A) Using PPP
A few weeks ago, I sought the assistance of this community in using PPP on a
Power Mac 7500 running Open Transport 1.0.8. I received many useful replies
which I will summarize here.
(Q) Does ConfigPPP have to be opened each time to initiate a new PPP
connection?
(A) One could use a freeware control strip module, ControlPPP. Also, various
client applications (Eudora, Netscape, Mosaic, many newsreaders, for
example) will automatically initiate a PPP connection when Internet access
is required.
(Q) Type 11 bomb when using Fetch 3.0.1b1 over the PPP connection.
(A) This was due to a problem in setting up the proper addressing and server
info in the TCP/IP control panel.
Thanks to all who responded to my query.

Pushing the envelope of obsolescence, I am attempting to web browse with a

MacWeb works okay but is a little, well, I don't think the net gives us much

Anyone know what keeps Netscape from launching?

Hi!
I have 2 Power Mac 7500's connected to the Internet, both running Open
Transport 1.0.8. Periodically I wish to synchronize selected folders that
exist on both machines. In other words, I wish the folders to become
identical with the updating done on either machine being communicated to the
other machine.
I am seeking recommendations from those of you who are doing/have done a
similar synchronization process. I'm interested in hearing about freeware,
shareware, and/or commercial software that has proven to be reliable and
relatively efficient.
Thanks for all advice that is offered.

Dear Digest readers,
I just purchased a Mindscape bundle from MacMall, who claimed the bundle
was PoewrPC compatible. Yet before even opening the CD-ROM package, I read
in the manual that it requires 24bit addressing. Unfortunately, if I
remember correctly 24bit addressing was done away with in System 7.1.
Please let me know how to get my PowerMac into 24bit addressing mode? I
can't install anything earlier than System 7.5.2 on my PowerMac. Or should
I just send it back to MacMall?
Thank you.

Without a doubt, the best Mac software for this is Macromedia's
Fontographer. It was created by the company that originally created
Freehand (Altsys), and that company was bought by Macromedia. Apparently
even the guys at Adobe use Fontographer to create the fonts in their

My problem:
>>Whenever I try to backup my hard drives onto an APS HyperTape drive with
>>Retrospect 3.0, my machine will freeze at some point during the process
>>(anywhere from 5-20 minutes into the backup).
I received a bunch of replies, several of which mentioned an elusive
conflict b/t Retrospect and Ram Doubler. Given my own tests, I think the
problem is that there is a three way conflict between Ram Doubler
1.6/1.6.1, Retrospect 3.0, and some as yet undetermined extension. The
freeze problem occurs when all extensions are active, but does not occur
when Ram Doubler is disabled, and does not occur when Ram Doubler is the
*only* extension enabled. Sigh. It will take a while to track down that
third component of the problem; maybe I'll find time this week to look for
it.
Anyway, Jon Gotow managed to get in touch with
someone at Dantz who really knew his stuff, and that person suggested the
following work around:
> Run Retrospect 3.0
> Click on the Special tab
> Option-Click on the Preferences button
> Click on System in the list
> Turn off Use System 7 Temporary Memory
> Close everything, quit Retrospect, and re-launch it
You also need to up Retrospect's memory partition, dependant on the number
of files your are trying to back up.
It worked for me, so I am able to backup with RD enabled. Unfortunately,
Retrospect needs a lot of ram to work this way.
Anyway, thanks to all of you that offered assistance!

I once experimented and noticed that if there are two versions of the same
application then double-clicking one of their documents opens that version
of the application which is the last in the alphabet. Try to rename "Word
6.0.1" to " Word 6.0.1" (note the space) while having "Word 5.1" (and
rebuild the desktop after this).
If you open v6.0.1 first and then double-click a document, then it gets
opened by v6.0.1.

Change the creation date of Word 5.1 so that the System thinks it was
created later than Word 6.0.1. You can do this with the Get Info... command
of ResEdit (delete the day of the week or ResEdit will complain that it's
wrong). Then rebuild the desktop.

Subject: computer switch transients reset modem from wierd state (Q)
Here is more "smoke and mirrors" where I don't know what is going on
and boldly testing theories am probably violating somebody's warantee. So
be it!
I have long minidin 8 serial because I have two layers of switchboxes
needed in my tandem computer setup. Switching computers can produce
transients that are seen by the modem as characters. They can be seen as
control characters that a modem off on won't reset! After receiving those
control characters, I get 8 for blanks, other number substitutions and
character additions.
I found deliberately switching computers back and forth again can
produce the required reset!
---
Here is a little more background which you may choose to ignor :
---
I usually switch the Bravo surge protected periferal switch layer off
connected to anything when switching unsurgeprotected computer switch
because I am afraid of the transients and the ensuant voltages induced.
But, being a theorist, I often try going in the opposite direction
than the current theory I am entertaining (and am afraid might cost me),
because a theorist tests theories as "part of his nature", even if there
is a risk of losing money. I only theoretically "bought" the pcb right
angle solder mount female in the Bravo switch as more reliable than the
much cheaper crimped connection female switch.

Subject: converting AVI to Mpeg or Quicktime
Could anyone out there in Cyber-Universe help solve this for me. I
would like to convert some AVI files into either mpeg or quicktime so that
I can view them on my av mac. I have tried a program called avi to
quicktime with no results. I end up with a mov. icon holding but 11k data.
I have tried to import the avi file using the movieplayer application but
after the conversion I have nothing but text form data in the window
rather than the video. I tried using uundo and uucd assuming that perhaps
the file had been in that format. I did that process before and after the
attempted conversion...again no result except that if I attempted same
before the so -called conversion I could load the file into the uucd and
see a set of files in its window but they would not read nor could I save
them to a file from the uucd application. I imagine there must be a decent
conversion program out there with even a bit of a help file which the avi
to quicktime does not have. I would appreciate someone emailing me some
help and the program, if it is shareware, or the name of it if it is not.
I must point out that this AVI file and many others came from NASA. Don't
they know that 40% of Internet users are on the Mac? Let's write to them
and let them know that they ought to use a more universal multimedia
format... Please send help to [email protected] Thanks in

Subject: downloading zip files
I am having trouble downloading a zip archive using Mosaic 2.0.1(68k). When I
do the download, I get a mass of garbage dumped to my screen rather than a
file to my hard drive. I think part of the problem is that the zip archive
needs to be downloaded as binary; I've successfully gotten the file this
way using an ftp link. My question is how to do the zip download using
Mosaic. I contacted Mosaic tech support and they said I'd need something
like either StuffIt Deluxe or MacZip as a helper application. I presently
have StuffIt Expander and ZipIt on my computer, so I'd think that would be
sufficient. And when I download a binhexed file, StuffIt Expander
automatically kicks in and does the decode and unstuff. What else is
needed?
As a related point, I downloaded MacZip from the Info_Mac archive, but it
is a .sit file and StuffIt Expander 3.5.2 ignores it. What is needed
instead?

up on the 28.8 line (that's why they bought 28.8 modems); they go to the

but some room at the 14.4 inn--especially "during busy hours." Until your
ISP
or the FC BBS adds more lines or nodes or whatever to make more room at the
inn for more 28.8 sign-ons, the problem will continue.
BTW, does this problem occur only or mostly "during busy hours," & does it
really occur "*every* time?" [emphasis mine] If it occurs rarely--or at
least
less frequently--during slack times (if there is such a thing on the Net
), I think you've got your answer. At least--what a relief --your modem
isn't broken.>I recently purchased a Performa 5300 with a Global Village Platinum modem
installed. I was happy with it until I began to realise that every time I
connect to my ISP or a FC BBS during busy hours I get disconnected. This only
happens, however, when I dial in using their 28.8 lines. If I use the
14.4 line I am never disconnected. This has led me to believe that the
modem has a problem with online services which have both 14.4 and 28.8

Doos anyone have any suggestions as to why this is happening or any

I might be barking up the wrong tree but anyway:
I view Java to be the _single_most_important and _promising_aspect_of_WWW.
For Apple to be left out on this would in my mind be near catastrophic - I
can't understand if this is going on with the consent of Apple, which often
boasts its dedication to innovation, development and pioneering in the
computer industry.
The situation is akin to the MacTCP question some years ago - originally
MacTCP was not part of the system software, you had to acquire it from
other sources and all in all Apple was sitting on the fence in this issue.
Presently MacTCP is rolled into the system software and I don't care to
ponder for a second a situation, where the Mac would be without smooth
support for the Internet!
The Internet or WWW isn't everything but is one of the fastes growing
sectors presently and daily new servers or web-pages appear. Java support
via Netscape is of course not solely an Apple issue - an eventual decision
not to include Java with the Mac-version of Netscape rest of course with
Netscape - I urge Apple to do everything possible to ensure that the Mac
isn't left behind on this.

Subject: Ram Doubler 1.6.1 and PB5300
My prof bought a PB5300 (more problematic than any other Mac I've used)
and he also bought Ram Doubler (which I upgraded over the holidays with
the updater from the Connextic site)...
The problem is this: Although he has 16Mb of REAL ram and 32MB
using RAM Doubler, he gets "out of system memory" errors all the time.
I've narrowed it down to a problem that only occurs when RAM Doubler
is installed.
A typical example - on reboot, freePPP 1.0.4 doesn't load because of
an out-of-memory condition (I forget the exact error right now).
Then, try running an application (such as Microsoft Word 5.1) which
has a RAM requirement of 4096k... and while launching, "out of system
memory" is guaranteed to show up.
Has anyone else seen this kind of behaviour?
Any suggestions on how to eliminate it (other than trashing RAM Doubler)
etc?
Thanks all... James

Subject: Reading ABC Flowchart Files
About a week ago I submitted a question asking for a method of reading ABC
Flowchart files (for Windows) on a Mac. Many thanks to all those who took the
time to respond.
Two ideas were suggested:
1) Get someone to open the files in ABC Flowchart and save them in a
convertible
format (Windows Meta File, Windows Bitmap, Acrobat, etc.).
2) Use SoftWindows to run ABC Flowchart.
Unfortunately for me, (1) is unworkable. The files are "living" documents.
Every
time someone needs to read one, it would have to be converted. While (2) would
work, it is expensive -- we would need to purchase SoftWindows and allocate the
disk space, etc. to run it.
There is at least one other person with this same problem. Perhaps someone is
looking for a "useful" project?

Subject: recommendations on PB5300
Responding to Antony D'Emanuele and his question about PB 5300, I bought a
5300cs and my major problem has been the AC port to charge the battery has
broken. That is, the pin connected to the logic board to which the AC
adaptor plugs into has broken off (internally) and I can only run the
computer off batteries charged with an external charger. The unbelievable
part of this is that you have to replace the logic board to repair it.
This happened over Christmas and I called 1-800-SOS-APPL to find out what
to do. They said the replacement would be covered under warranty but the
logic boards were being redesigned to address another (unspecified) issue,
and the new boards wouldn't be available until mid-January. My wife has
been running simulations on the PB day and night (or as long as the battery
holds out) so I'm waiting for her crunch to ease before pursuing the
repair. The adaptor port seems a bit flimsy compared to a PB150 I compared
it with. Has anyone else had this problem?

I own the EZ-135, and use it in conjunction with Redux Deluxe quite happily.
(I suspect that the same would be true if I had a Zip, but I don't...and this
is not the place to reopen the can of worms labelled "Zip vs. EZ", hmm?)
The software supplied by Syquest with the EZ cartridges is a "Lite" version
of LaCie's Silverlining. It seems to work reasonably well, except if you
already own a LaCie driv with an older version of the full Silverlining
package. In that case, you may need to get an update of full Silverlining, in
order to have it properly handle ejecting the cartridge at the time the
Finder dismounts it.
I chose to avoid that situation entirely, since I own Hard Disk Toolkit; I
just reformat the Syquest cartridges with HDTK, and have no problems with
them.
As for finding Inline, they don't really exist any more. They were bought by
Focus Technologies, and there's been no updates to any of the Inline products
since that time.

Subject: StyleWriter I fix needed
My stylewriter I "chatters" when it is engaged either when a print
command is issued, or when it is turned on. It sounds like gears are
grinding, but no damage is found. The computer registers it as the print
head is jammed, and to please remove the obstruction and continue. there
is no obstruction, the head is in its resting place on the left hand side
of the printer. It will not print a complete page before it stops and
cancels the job.
Does anyone have any experience repairing this model? is it worth repairing?
please respond with email.

At least since Multics in the mid 60s and I think even CTSS had a
hierarchical file system. It was one of the earliest time sharing systems
and was already getting obsolete by the mid 60s. A lot of things people
think are new in this business aren't really all that new.

Subject: Virtual Memory on Removables (Q)
I currently am using a 7100/66 running System 7.1.2 and I noticed that when I
did a "Get Info" on Excel that it told me that memory requirements would go
down a great deal if I turned on virtual memory. I went to the memory control
panel but the VM option wasn't there! Then I realized that the only drives I
have on the system are removable drives (a hard disk is not an option in this
situation) and that VM doesn't work with removable drives. I assume that since
there is no hard drive that the system just doesn't put up the VM part of the
Memory CP. I tried getting a very old program called VM Eject that was written
by PB Computing to allow VM on removables. Unfortunately, it was written for
System 7.0 and doesn't work on this version of the Memory CP. It politely
refuses because "I have an incomplete system". Does anyone know how I can
enable VM on this machine (other than getting a true HD) or even if this is
really the reason that VM doesn't show up?
TIA

Subject: What makes a doc open an app?
Hi Info-Mac-ers,
Last week I posted a question about two versions of Microsoft Word (5.1a and
6.0.1) on the same Mac, more specifically about the Word version that is opened
by default on double-clicking a Word-document (in the following called the
"default version"). I was very surprised by the many responses I received. It
would seem that the situation described is very typical for experienced Word
5.1a users with mixed feelings about version 6.0.1 (to put it mildly!).
I have tried to deduce a pattern from all the suggestions and solutions given,
but, unfortunately, I still can't speak the final word on this subject. With
due
reserve I will summarize some general observations and conclusions I made:
-Obviously, opening a Microsoft Word file (with CREATOR "MSWD" and TYPE "WDBN"
for 5.1a and "W6BN" for 6.0.1) can be done from the preferred application by
the
standard Open command of the File menu. A variant of this is dragging the file
to the preferred application's icon or to an Alias of it. The location of the
two versions in this case is irrelevant. BTW, having identical TYPE (APPL) and
CREATOR (MSWD) the two applications get identical icons after a desktop
rebuild.
For the particular icon that the system chooses, see below.
-If one insists on double-clicking the doc's icon, to me there seems to be just
one solution to make sure that it will be opened in the preferred version: put
the two versions on different partitions, with the preferred version on the
partition that alphabetically comes first. Toggling the preferred version thus
can be done by just changing the name of the partition (an action that is not
without danger, particularly if it is done to the startup partition!) or by
exchanging the folders that the two versions live in, together with their
contents .
-As the confusion is a result of the two versions of Word (and consequently
their documents) having the same CREATOR (MSWD), one solution involves changing
the CREATOR of one of the two (i.e. to mswd). This would work, but I consider
it
rather intrusive, making the exchange of documents between colleagues less
transparent. In the mean time, one wonders why Microsoft didn't use this
possibility to distinguish between the two versions.
-The suggestion to give both applications different names -supposedly resulting
in a different alphabetic priority- doesn't seem to work (with Microsoft
Word).
No matter what names are given to the applications, on double-clicking a doc
the
Finder will look for the application with a matching CREATOR, which
subsequently is started and opens the doc.
-If the two versions are on the same partition, double-clicking a doc will open
a default version determined by the system. I have not been able to find a
pattern here: some people suggest that it's the last version number and/or its
creation date. This suggestion was not justified by some experiments I
performed, however: without exception, version 6.0.1 was opened (the first that
had been installed on the partition). It would not surprise me if the default
version is the one that is detected first by the system when the desktop is
rebuilt (and therefore probably comes first physically). I haven't done that
experiment. It definitely is the version that 'lends' its icon to the other
version.
-There is a small utility (Fix Icons, version Z-1.0d7, downloadable from
Info-Mac) that -at least temporarily- can change the default version chosen by
the system. It claims to change the desktop database selectively and it worked
for me: dropping 5.1a on it makes it the default version. Somehow its action
doesn't seem to "stick", however. While it survives a desktop rebuild, it is
lost by a simple direct opening of the competing version (in my case 6.0.1).
There may exist some other utilities that have the same effect as Fix Icons
(Save-a-Bundle was mentioned a couple of times), but I didn't try those.
-There is much confusion as to the correspondence between the default version
and the icon given by the system to the application. Such an association is
suggested by the following observation. If the two versions live on different
partitions, the version on the higher priority partition (the one that
alphabetically comes first) donates its icon to the other version and -as
explained above- it is the default version chosen by the system. However, if
the
two versions are on the same partition, I didn't find this correspondence
between default version and displayed icon. After changing the default version
>From 6.0.1 to 5.1a, i.e. using Fix Icons, the then default Word 5.1a
application
still has the icon of Word 6.0.1, despite repeated desktop rebuilds.
I realize that this has become a rather long story. But since so many people
seem to have been triggered by my question and responded, I felt obliged to at
least summarize the things I learned from them and from my own observations.
Thanks all!

You can try using the program app-hider
/gui/app-hider-11.hqx
This switches around the type/creater info of an application, so you
can keep two versions of the program on your hard disk.

Well, I think that you refer to WYSIWYG programs (no HTML code), the two
before suggestions are OK:
Arachnid 1.9 (good interface, poor documentation and don't works with
RAMDoubler)
ftp.sec-look.uiowa.edu /pub/demos/full-1.9.sea.hqx
HTML Pro (only true bidirectional WYSIWYG editing program and poor interface)
http://www.w3.org/hypertext/WWW/Tools/htmlpro.html
WebManager 0.93b (good references, no documentation until 0.95 version)
ftp.hamburg.pop.de /pub/pink-software/webmanager/webmanager.sea.hqx
Another information that you can use:
Web Designer Page http://www.kosone.com/people/nelsonl/nl.htm
ComVista Web Page http://www.comvista.com/net/www/htmleditor.html
I'm still searching a good shareware web author program, maybe you can have
luck find it.
