Just another Netscape splash patch... This one is a little on the artsie
side but it looks nice. A little more graphically inclined than my 'Alien
Netscape' splash screen so people that are yuppies may want to update to
this ;P
**Note** This should be used insted of 'aNetscape Splash.hqx' because it
has been updated. Notice the lady insted of the man holding hands... much
better:) And the small netscape type looks a little better during netscap's
opening scan.

Subject: [*] AutoLaunch 1.0.4
AutoLaunch is a screen saver "engine" that launches an application after
your Macintosh has been idle for a specified amount of time. It's great
for running stand-alone MacroMedia Director movies as screen savers,
executing AppleScript applets during idle time, restarting demos after a
person walks away from an in-store Mac, etc.
AutoLaunch is capable of locating an application anywhere on a Mac's hard
disk, making distribution of Director presentations much easier - you don't
have to worry about installation procedures or that users will move the
presentation to another folder - it'll always work.
Also included with the AutoLaunch control panel are AppleScript examples
for using JPEGView to run a slide show, and to turn file sharing on during
idle time and off at wake-up.

Subject: [*] Drive Zipple
Here's a zipple I wrote about about a year ago with Zipple version 1.9.1
for import into your prefs file.
So what's it like? You are in a car travelling down a road, a car passes
by, then another as the sun begins to set on the mountains in the distance.
The road bends to the right as the sky darkens and you see a mountain
tunnel ahead. Through the dark tunnel another car passes as their bright
headlamps whizz by. Finally you exit the tunnel and return to the beginning
of the sequence.
Sounds pretty vivid but let's face it, we're not talking photo realism
here, we're talking a Zipple. So have fun and enjoy.
It's Email-ware which means reply and it's free.

Subject: [*] I-Spy 1.0b2; an AppleScript applet that monitors FTP sites
Hi,
Internet Spy 1.0b2 is a collection of AppleScript and Perl scripts that
together monitor remote FTP sites for changes. I intend this beta release
to ferret out bugs and problems as well as to solicit your feedback.
This distribution includes extensive documentation and examples. The
documentation itself is a set of HTML pages, and you will need a web
browser (like Netscape or Mosaic) or an HTML viewer to properly display
them.
Changes since b1:
o Recompiled with Tiny 1.0.5 (.txt suffix on log files to please Netscape)
o Removed some unforgiving debugging code
o Fixed a compatibility problem across versions of ACME Widgets
I-Spy is free and may be freely distributed.
Share and enjoy,
Igor

Hi,
Tiny is an AppleScript library. The only purpose of this distribution is
such that other people have access to it should they wish to recompile my
script applets.
In addition to Tiny and this brief overview, you should also find Skinny
applet. It is a demonstration applet that inherits most of its behaviour
from Tiny. A more useful example, I-Spy inherits most of the log file and
error handling functionality from this library. Tiny also provides it
mechanisms for learning about working directories, handling user
interrupts, and cleaning up before quitting. I-Spy 1.0b2 should be
available in the comm/tcp/ directory of Info-Mac.
Changes since 1.0.4: Added a .txt. suffix to log file names to please the
new version of Netscape.
Tiny is free and may be freely distributed. Should you wish to use it and
have questions, comments, suggestions, or gripes, please let me know...
Share and enjoy,

Super Comments 2.0.7, shareware by Flux Software and available from
Info-Mac, replaces Comment Keeper. In addition to preserving Get Info
comments across desktop rebuilds, it will also (optionally) add the comment
box to save and open dialog boxes, allowing you to save comments with new
files, and read comments of existing files.
This software FINALLY makes Get Info comments useful by preserving them and
by making them accessible at the appropriate times.
Hope this helps. Cheers!

Hi-
I've been trying to write a simple script which would turn on the internal
speaker of my PM 7500/100. I sometimes leave headphones plugged into the
external speakers miniplug, which shuts off the speaker, and I want to have
an easy way to turn it back on. I've tried all kinds of variants of:
tell application "Sound & Displays"
set soundOutput to "Internal speaker"
end tell
but none work. Can someone give me the magic word I'm missing, or direct me
to where Apple's wizards have hidden it?

Subject: FoolProof and PowerMac
The journalism computer lab at my high school bought two PowerMac 5200/75
LCs about a year ago, and a PM 7500/100 about a month ago. We have been
using a program called FoolProofto restrict access to the computers since
we had problems with users trashing software and otherwise damaging the
systems. It has worked fine with our non-PowerMac computers (Classic IIs
and LC 520s), but since we installed in on the PowerMacs (starting this
school year) they have frozen periodically. The computers will freeze
randomly, sometimes as much as every five minutes, and require a forced
reboot. This problems seems to happen more often in Pagemaker 5.0, but it
happens often in Freehand 5.0 and Ofoto (Apple's scanning software) as
well. We haven't had any problems with the 7500, but we haven't done much
more than install the software yet as we are still early into this issue.
My question is: Has anyone know of conflicts between FoolProof and
PowerMacs? We have tried turning off most other extensions, and that hasn't
helped. I checked for the flaw in the PPC 603 chip that some 5200s shipped
with, but it came up clean. I have not been able to convince our adviser to
remove FoolProof for a week or two to see if the problem goes away. I plan
on buying Conflict Catcher 3 soon, and I'll use it to try to find the
conflict. I am not sure that FoolProof is the problem, but that is my best
guess at the moment.
BTW, FoolProof is not PowerMac native, and I believe (I'm not sure) that it
is pre-System 7.5.
Any help in solving this problem would be appreciated, because our 5200s
and possibly our 7500 are almost useless until this problem is fixed. These
are our primary page layout and graphics computers, and are essential to
publishing our newspaper.

Subject: Upgrade suggestions (R)
"A friend has a Quadra 840/AV with 8 MB of RAM and a 230 MB hard
drive....Are Power PC accelerators, CPU upgrades or logic board upgrades
viable alternatives to buying a new system?"
I certainly hope so. I am waiting for Apple to start shipping its promised
logic board upgrade for machines with the Quadra 800 form (includes the
Quadra 840AV and certain 601 Power Macs). The upgrade would turn these Macs
into a PowerMac 8500 with a 120MHz 604 PPC. I think it would be wasteful,
at this point, to upgrade a Q800/840 to anything less, since the 8500
upgrade *ought* to be available in the first half of this year, at a price
(I'm guessing) in the $1750-$2250 range.
If your friend absolutely must have PowerPC performance now, there are two
main options: DayStar's PowerPro and an Apple logic board upgrade to a 601
Power Mac. I think the latter option is only a few hundred more than the
DayStar board, i.e. around $1600 for a 100MHz system. (And I wonder if the
Daystar board works in an 840 - it runs its PPC at a speed that's a
whole-number multiple of the original '040 chip's speed, so 4x in a Q700
(for 100MHz) and 3x (for 99MHz) in a Q800. But a Q840 runs at 40MHz and I
think 100MHz is the top speed of the Daystar board - maybe it drops the
clock speed of the 840's '040...something to check.) Another drawback of
the Daystar board is that it looks as if it won't run Apple's Copland
system software. But the latter, like the 8500 upgrade board, may be
vaporware for quite a while. Or Apple may relent and do a version of
Copland that will run on machines with PPC cards instead of logic boards
(if enough people scream loudly enough).
If chip availability problems continue to delay the 8500 upgrade I will go
for one of Power Computing's 604 machines, which aren't larded with
8500-style video-capture capacities I'll never use. It's worth checking out
http://www.powercc.com/ and linking to the "Build Your Own Box" page. You
can construct a customized system, submit your configuration description,
and get a price back automatically. Made me salivate.
