Subject: [*] Amtrak Schedules

This is a Macintosh archive which will unpack into a complete set of
Amtrak train schedules. Please add this to the info/nms directory.

This is version 5.1, which includes winter revisions to all schedules,
plus minor changes in Metroliner schedules made by Amtrak sometime
after the Sept. 10 schedules went into effect. All schedules are
now HTML coded, but will still make sense without a web browser.
The links are set up as relative, so you do not need to have an
internet connection to be able to go from file to file and use the index.

New in this release is a b/w Amtrak.gif, and a file explaining why we
cannot provide train fares as part of this service (I've gotten pretty
tired of answering suggestions/complaints about fare info). Many links
to other sites have been added, including links to All Aboard-USA, an
internet resource linking rail passenger groups aacross the country.
The Chief is a test of a real heavy markup with lots of outside links.
Please let me know how you like it.

These schedules are good through March 1996. If minor changes take place
before then, patch files will be available from the home site at
libertynet.org.

Please spread the word about these schedules, and encourage your friends
to ride the train.

For individual files, or if you want to have a link from your home page,
use one of the following URLs:

http://www.libertynet.org/~dvarp/Amtrak (Philadelphia)
http://www.mcs.net/~dsdawdy/Amtrak (Chicago)
http://server.berkeley.edu/Transit/Carriers/Amtrak (Berkeley)

All three sites have the same info. The mirrors are there to provide
backup in case one of the sites is down, to spread out the load, and to
make the service faster. Thanks to Dan Dawdy and Dan Gildea for
providing these sites, and to Libertynet for the host site.

Thanks also to Tom Box and Dan Gildea for catching some of the errors. I
hope I got the rest. Please e-mail [email protected] if you
find any remaining problems. New on the list of volunteers this time
around were Mike Kimura and Tom Kruski. Please see the about.html file
for complete credits.

XTension by Kris Coppieters.
e-mail: [email protected]

Portions Copyrighted 1988-1994 Quark, Inc. All Rights reserved.

* What is it ? *

Collect HTML is an XTension that allows you to convert text from Quark pages
into HTML format. Styles can be converted into HTML pre- and suffixes. Collect
also creates JPEG or PICT previews from Quark pages or from text or picture
boxes.

Collect is not well suited to convert complete Quark pages; it better for
'clipping' articles from large pages (e.g. a newspaper) for Web publication.

HTML is not as rich in features as Quark is, so do not expect a WYSIWIG
behaviour in HTML. Collect just tries to help you to create good-looking HTML
documents from Quark pages.

The demo version time limited: it is usable until january 31,1995, and it only
works for sessions of 5 consecutive minutes. If you want a non-time limited
version, you should send me your payment and an e-mail address. Upon reception
of payment, I will send you a little application by e-mail to personalise your
copy, and to remove the time limit.

You need to have QuickTime installed in order to be able to create JPEG
previews.

This is a PPP installation and set up guide with some troubleshooting tip=
s.
This is intended as the instructions to go with a PPP/TCP
installation/config floppy disk which you create by adding :
MacTCP Switcher, PPPremier Timer 1.1.0 BETA =9F, Netscape 1.12 Installer,
stuffit expander.
The resulting disk is so easy to use that it *might* even work for a
computer illiterate. Just Change the specifics of this doccument to fit
your local internet access situation, and include the relevant PPP
CDEVs/INITS, prefs(minus your password), and TCP Switcher setting file.
All the end user has to do is drag and drop. It all fits on a 1.44 Meg
floppy. Give copys of your install disk to those clueless Internet
providers who give WinSock settings to Macintosh users. Use it to overload
the campus phone lines. Whatever :-)
May be included on the CD-ROM, although why would you want to ? :-)

Subject: [*] eDOC 1.1.1

eDOC is a shareware program which enables preparation of so-called
"autonomous" or "portable" documents from most Macintosh applications. Such
documents can be read and printed without the need for the source
application to be available, while maintaining their original content and
layout.

Standard eDOC documents are read using a free application (eDOC Reader)
which is included in the package. The Reader is small in size (about 50K)
and has several viewing, searching and copying options. Since version 1.1,
eDOC provides the ability to create self-reading documents, which contain
an embedded viewer application and therefore do not require the separate
Reader application. The embedded viewer adds less than 40K to the document
size.

Version 1.1.1 is a maintenance version which fixes several bugs.

eDOC may be used on a free trial basis for 30 days. If you find it useful
and continue to use it beyond the free trial period, you are required to
pay a $25 registration fee.

This file is a self-installing package which includes eDOC Creator (a
chooser extension), eDOC Reader (an application) and full documentation.

Subject: [*] FileIndexer 1.1

What's new in 1.1? Kinder indexing, less memory, stop words list,
printing.

I really miss OnLocation. (It doesn't run reliably under system 7.5).

This is my simplistic attempt to knock up some of the key functionality
I'm looking for.

In a multi-user environment, where you have budget for a server, I
recommend
AppleSearch for indexing your documents. I wanted to have a way to
quickly retrieve
a list of documents on a mounted disk that contain a given word.

FileIndexer trades memory for speed. It builds a sorted list of unique
words
(not case sensitive), and then keeps a list of the files that contain
each word.

This list of lists is kept in memory. This makes it VERY fast to do the
binary search.
You can save the index to a file and load it reasonably quickly.

Run FileIndexer, choose Index folder, and select the top folder in a tree
of
text files to be indexed.

When done, type a single word into the find field and press return. A
list of all
the files that contain that word will be displayed. In brackets you'll
see the number
of times the word is found in that file. Also shown is the modification
date of
the file and then the full path to the file.

Double-click on the file to open the first 32k of it in a text window.

>From the text window you can use Find or Find again (command-G) to locate
the word
you searched for.

You can show the word list in a window. It shows how many files have each
word, and
double-clicking on a word does the search for you.

Have fun!
Peter

Hi,

Internet Spy 1.0b1 is a collection of AppleScript and Perl scripts that
together monitor remote FTP sites for changes. I intend this beta release
to ferret out bugs and problems as well as to solicit your feedback.

This distribution includes extensive documentation and examples. The
documentation itself is a set of HTML pages, and you will need a web
browser (like Netscape or Mosaic) or an HTML viewer to properly display
them.

I-Spy relies on a library Tiny which is archived separately.

Share and enjoy,
Igor

PreviewScanner is a small utility designed for people that keep large
amounts of graphic files on their hard drive.

Some graphic applications will allow you to create "Previews" of any
graphic file. These show up in the "Open" dialogs so you can see the
contents of the file before actually opening it. This "preview" is what
PreviewScanner reads and displays. You may scan through an entire folder
by pressing the left and right arrows. If you see a file you wish to
delete, click the "Delete" button. (This is one of it's most useful
features.) To select a new folder to browse, click the "Select New

button.

RPN should be compatable with all Macintoshes using all systems. It was

Subject: (Q) Stylewriter1200 Mac SE

Hi,

I have learnt that a Stylewriter1200 doesn't really like my old Mac SE.
But it is kind of strange:
*. Installing the software, I can't do it on Easy Install, but I can do
configured install. Strange.
*. I can print everything that goes sideways. ie. two-pages-on-one-page,
printing horisontally.

But when I try to print a normal one-page on one page the Stylewriter1200-
program beeps at me and says it hasn't got enough of memory.
Since the I've heard that I can't make it work on an lower than 68020-machine,
ok, but why does my sideways printing work?
I just think it's the software for my Stylewriter1200 that doesn't want to
play with my MacSE. I've tried Stylewriter (1), and StylewriterII, without
the programs recognising that I've got Stylewriter attached, although it makes
my printer wake up and cleans its printing heads.

Has anyone found a workaround around this problem?

submit the briefing of all the letters to Info-mac.

There is a commercial encryption package for the Mac. I think it was from
ViaCrypt or something like that. This company is licensed by RSA.

I look at Yahoo and I was right! You can find the company as follows:

Their web page says it is interoperable:

ViaCrypt PGP

ViaCrypt PGP is the most secure e-mail and file privacy program available.
It combines RSA Public Key technology for digital signatures and key
management with IDEA secret key technology for data privacy. Interoperable
versions of ViaCrypt PGP (Pretty Good Privacy) are available for MS-DOS,
Windows, Macintosh, and most UNIX platforms.

Usenet news groups contain "for sale" groups. They seem to be local groups.
Some, like the New Jersey group are written "forsale" (nj.forsale) whereas
others are written "for-sale" (vegas.for-sale).
You could try to find one near you and post your request to them.

2 Can I use 1 modem (e.g., a GlobalVillage TelePort Platinum) for=

Problems? Tips?

It is for a little bookshop, more or less forced by distributors=

According to developer notes:

But is a non-PC serial device, i.e. a Mac serial device (modem),=

Any experiences?

"Not all RS-232 devices work properly using the RS-422 protocol."

So? Is RS-232 used by software?

OK, please don't flame me, I am the worlds number one Mac fan! But... I've
owned five Macs from Plus to SE30 to IICi to Centris 610 and all of them
were solid as a rock, hardly ever crashed. The 610 sits on my desk at work
and is on for weeks at a time because I have to access it through ARA from
my Powerbook 160 (sorry six Macs) and it hardly ever locks.
A month ago I finally bit the bullet and bought a used PowerMac 8100/80 AV
for use at home. It has 16MByte of RAM and a 500MByte hard drive.
Ever since the day it arrived it has locked up on average 5 to 6 times a
day, at random, in no particular place or action.
I've tried removing all the unnescessary stuf like the speech stuff and
FAX and telephone software I don't need but it still does it.
I've reinstalled the system software three times (7.5) and installed
conflict catcher to isolate any problems but still it crashes.
Is this just how PowerMacs are or have I just been lucky up to now? Does
everyone else suffer from this instability or have I missed something?
Quite frankly I'd be more productive going back to my IIci and I'm
considering going back to an 840AV or something.

Please help me with any advice or remedies before I go nuts!

I had this error a while ago on a 7500 and could solve it by
trashing Finder preferences. "CHK error" might mean a checksum
error, but I'm not sure about that.

I've been having the same problems with the ClarisWorks 4.0v2 -> 4.0v3
updater (US Version). I looked on AOL and found out that they took it off of
the Claris software area. I also found out that the tech support had been
telling people that the 4.0v2 -> 4.0v3 updater did not work for 68K Macs.
The resource that the error is reporting as "Modified" is a Power Mac
specific resource. The suggestion was to reload 4.0v1 and use the 4.0v1 ->
4.0v3 updater or wait until they remedy the problem with a new updater.

I hope this info helps.

Subject: desktop publishing?

I am putting together a Town Report.

We have a WGS80 running AppleShare 4.01.

All of our users use Word or Excel.

Our final product will most likely be done in PageMaker.

What is the best way to save files so that everyone can contribute their
part? Should I set up individual folders? I want them to be able to see and
change only their own data, but have one person in charge of assembling
everyone else's reports into one uniform report.

Should they save as text? What about Excel charts and spreadsheets?

What is the best way of getting all of this information together so we can
put page numbers on it and send it out to a printer to make it camera ready?

I know there has got to be a better way than we have been doing it.

Actually it doesn't seem that this works. I think this flushes the disk cache
but if the finder hasn't issued it's internal save command then their would
be nothing in the disk cache to flush. What I am looking for is the
equivalent of a save command that is found in all other programs. The finder
doesn't have one because you woudn't want to leave it up to the user to
remember to save the desktop changes so it relies on some sort of timing/use
clock and does the save automatically. I would like at times to do the save
manually. Sometimes I may make many changes and because of Murphy's Law the
computer always crashes before the finder has decided to do it's auto save. I
then have to redo the changes. Any help would be appreciated. Maybe adding a
save command to the finder's file menu would be great if an extension out
there did it.

Subject: Hard drives (Q)

Dear Digest readers,
Please help!

I've been looking for a fast, under 10ms seek/access 1 GB drive.
Unfortunately the Quantum 1080 drives are 12ms. Does 9ms or 8ms make much
difference for a drive mounted on a PCI PowerMac 7200? I don't plan on
spending money for any accelerator cache cards, SpeedDoubler, or
RAMDoubler. I've already spent enough to get it up to 24MB RAM.

Also is the internal 1GB drive any faster than an external?
How much faster is SCSI-2 than SCSI-1?
Does having additional SCSI devices on my chain slow down the transfer of
data?

Has anyone tried out the Adaptec board for the PCI/SCSI acceleration? Does
it affect the read and write speed of external SCSI devices? Anyone tried
it on a PowerMac 7200/75? If it does accelerate, how much faster is it?

Are there direct to PCI drives for the Mac available yet? How much faster
are they than SCSI-2 drives of the same capacity (if they exist)?

I noticed my external Syquest sometimes stops reading from the drive and
the light goes blank for a second or two. APS was not able to locate the
problem after two trips to the repair shop. It has happened less
frequently now that I use my Syquest less frequently. Still, is this
common behavior of aging external SCSI drives? Or is this a feature of the
Syquest mechanism aging after six months?
It happened even after I got an extra cable and the special terminator from
APS.
Are internal drives less or more prone to behavior like this?

Who in your experience has been the most reliable manufacturer of disk drives?
All the names I've heard of are APS, LaCie, Spin, MacProducts, Apple,
Quantum, Seagate, and FWB. What are the advantages and disadvantages of
each? APS's tech support may be very well trained on the technical side,
but they appear to lack the phone lines to not be put on hold for half an
hour at a time. I would love it if the toll-free support were more
available than the half hour wait on hold I experienced.
Amoung these, and any others which would you recommend if looking for a 1 GB
external?

I'd be interested in any benchmark reports that site the speed of these
mechanisms.

I will make a summary for anyone who is interested.

Sorry if this boarders on a FAQ, but with all the options out there, it
seems that only by finding out the real personal use experience I'll be
able to make an informed decision.

Standard disclaimers apply.
Thank you.

When trying to convince someone of your point of view you really don't want
to belittle or call them names. Then you are branded as a crank and all of
your reasonable explanations are dismissed out of hand.

Just state your reasons.

(1) Macs cost less to operate. (2) Some Macs are even cheaper than an
identical PC. (3) No more worry about a single vendor computer since there
now are clones. (4) There is a higher percentage Internet connected Macs
than PCs. (5) Other than one specific brand of Unix machine, there are
more Macs as Web servers. (6) Contrary to popular opinion, it does not
cost more to have both Macs and PCs in a single organization. etc.

Find out the reasons for going PC only and explode them one by one. All of
the arguments need to be reasonable and backed up by facts.

I had the exact same problem. I bought another fan from radio shack (3 inch
cage fan, about $15) and replaced it myself. You have to remove the power
supply/fan assembly. The chassis for the power supply "unfolds" so you can
get to the fan. The radio shack is an exact replacement for the original
fan.

I've had this problem and found out it came from using a SCSI ethernet
adapter on my 280c at the office. I found that when I got a bootup message
(when I wasn't connected to the ethernet adapter) that the selected Ethernet
port could not be used, so the built-in Localtalk port would be used instead,
then I would have problems with subsequent sleeping. If I went to the network
control panel and chose the Remote only (for ARA), then I wouldn't have the
hanging on awakening. I guess you could also try Zapping the PRAM
(Cmd-opt-P-R at startup time), since I think that will also reset network
settings.

At any rate, perhaps your network settings became corrupted. I guess from my
experience that the system can handle an incorrect network interface at
startup by just resetting to the known built in one, but upon reawakening
>From sleep, it tries again to use the bad one and crashes.

Again, this was just my experience, but I thought I'd throw it out in case it
helps.

From: [email protected] (Edward Ver Hoef)
Subject: Response to Scanner Questions

Recently I asked the info-macians for advice regarding the purchase of
a scanner. I got very helpful advice from four people: Al Bloom
([email protected]), Lanny Chambers ([email protected]), Javier Llavador
([email protected]), and Jesus A. Rodriguez
([email protected]). The topics on which I wanted comments and
the associated comments I received were:

1. I have two intended uses for a scanner: 1) I want to be able to scan in
documents (sometimes from books) so that I can extract text from the
document and insert it in a word processor document and edit it there, if
necessary; 2) I want to be able to scan photographs, resize them
(proportionally), and insert them also in a word processor document. The
primary word processor I will be using is Microsoft Word 6.0 but I also
might use Pagemaker on occasions.

2. I want any scanner I buy to be Twain compliant but that seems to be the
case for almost all scanners these days.

Yes, but TWAIN is often not as reliable or as fast as using the Mac
scanning software provided with any decent scanner; in fact, the included
software may validly drive your purchasing decision. TWAIN is mostly a
crutch that PC owners must use to sidestep the horrible conflicts they
suffer with their hardware.

3. I presume the need for scanning from books dictates the need for a
flatbed scanner.

Correct.

4. Initially I thought I should get a grey scale scanner as I do not have a
color printer. However, the dirth of such scanners and the constant
lowering of the cost of color printers (as well as color scanners) have
made me think I probably should get a color scanner.

Not to mention scanning stuff for your WWW page!

5. Then the next choice is between single pass and three-pass scanners. I
have no factual basis for that choice. Although I realize single pass
scanners probably are faster, that is of no great significance to me. Are
single pass scanners more precise? By that I mean, is there a possible
problem in registration in multiple passes?

You may be surprised to learn that many 3-pass scanners have better
registration than similar 1-pass models. The Microtek ScanMaker II and IIsp
are one example, although the difference is tiny. However, the IIsp is
considerably faster. If speed is important (be realistic), then spend the
extra money.

6. Resolution in terms of DPI on all the scanners seems quite adequate for
my purposes.

Correct. The only reason to buy high resolution is if you'll need to
greatly enlarge the image size for offset printing. The general rule for
photos and other halftones is to scan at a dpi (dots per inch) number
1.5X-2X that of the lpi (lines per inch) of the target printer, adjusted
for image scaling; e.g., if you're printing to a 300 dpi laser printer that
uses a 53 lpi screen, at 100% image size, scan at 2 X 53 lpi = 106 dpi
(rounding to 100 is OK). If you're going to print it 150% of the scanned
size, multiply by 1.5 to get 150 dpi. Any higher resolution is a waste of
time and disk space. OTOH, if you're scanning line art, scan at your
printer's resolution--300 dpi in the above example--multiplied by your
scaling factor.

7. Within these constraints, I'd like to spend as little as possible and
still get a reliable scanner which produces good quality output. Among the
scanners I have been considering are: Microtek Scanmaker II and IISP, UMAX
Vista T630 and UC630L, and the Infinity Scorpio. What supporting software
should I be looking for and why?

The Microtek ScanMaker II is the cheapest (well under $400) worthwhile
color scanner available--I just bought one, and am pleased considering the
price; once I get around to calibrating its color curve, it'll be fine.

Most Mac scanner packages include Caere OmniPage Direct, which is a decent
OCR program that scans directly into your word processor or page layout
app. It gives good results if the original is clean, such as with a book or
journal, but has accuracy problems with smudgy xerox copies and the like.
If you have a Power Mac, consider upgrading ($150) it to OmniPage
Professional 5.0, which uses the PPC's power to identify fuzzy characters
with AI routines.

The ScanMaker II also comes with Microtek's excellent ScanWizard, which can
operate as either a Photoshop plug-in or a standalone scanning application
>From which you can save files for placement in other documents. I'm very
happy with the features and output of ScanWizard, especially the
de-screening feature that removes moire patterns from halftones scanned
>From magazines or books.

Finally, this scanner includes Color It!, an image editing app like a
poor-man's Photoshop. Since I already have Photoshop, I haven't tried it,
but I hear it's fine for cleaning up scans and basic color correction.

Speaking of Photoshop, many scanners come bundled with Photoshop LE. LE is
really a crippled demo version, and lacks many important and useful
features of the full application. But it can be upgraded for $150 or so at
your leisure. For more money up front, you get full Photoshop 3.0, a
professional app that really needs a Power Mac with at least 24 MB of RAM
to work properly. I don't view LE as much of an enticement.

One more thing: many scanner manufacturers--including Microtek--have lousy
customer service. Few have WWW pages with free software updates, although
Microtek has a toll-call BBS and accepts fax inquiries (a good thing, since
their phone line is always clogged). That said, my old scanner has chugged
along faithfully for 7 years without a problem. It appears to be more
solidly-built than my new one, however.

---------------

Well, I bought a microtek scanmaker II two years ago, the only software
with it was the driver, and photoshop LE, I'm very happy with it, but I
need more software: For OCR (to be able to scan in documents) I only have
Omnipage professional 2.0 (because I don't have enough money to buy the
newest v 5.0, but the 2.0 works fine. The photographs that I scan look very
well either in my deskwriter 550C or in slides with procolor (agfa slider
printer). When I make slides, I force the dpi from photoshop plug in until
800 for better results with the slides. For me (M.D and Ph.D, only
research, without work :-() it was a good choice, but may be you need
another software, photoshop is pretty to work with photographs, and for OCR
(optical character recognition) Omnipage professional may be the best but
expensive, I read in somewhere that there are another OCR software
cheapest, but I don't know.

---------------

I recently bought the Microtek ScanMaker II, from MacWarehouse, the price
was $300.00. It's color scanner, I do not remember the resolution. It's a
three-pass scanner. It's comes with Omni-Direct, an OCR software for
scanning text and transfer to any word-processing program, I'm using
WordPerfect. Have also Color-It, is a software like Photoshop, for editing
graphics. You can use the scanner in bw, grayscale or colors. I'm satisfy
with my purchase.

---------------

Leslye continues to be disgustingly happy with her original LaCie
SilverScanner. Very long of tooth these days, but still remarkably able.
With that kind of track record, I suggest you look at LaCie's offering,
too. There is almost nothing she can't do with that puppy and *any* app of
interest. It doesn't do slides. I got her a Nikon for 35mm slides and negs.
Cheaper at this point than replacing the original-recipe SilverScanner. If
I were starting today, I'd get a scanner and slide/neg option. If you want
to scan text, get OmniPage. Pricey, yes. But nothing is in second place.

Thanks to all. I'm now ready to sally forth and try my luck with the
catalogs, computer stores, and computer shows.

i know this question will probably take more than one
"conversation" with macwizards...

i have a new 8500, 24MB, 2GB, 120mhz, yet it's still running
slower than the 486 i have--i'm not counting any networked
applications, because our mac network is slower than the pc
network.

it's starting to drive me a bit nuts. i know i'll need to
feed whoever's interested in helping me with this more
specific information, but don't really know what else to say
right now, except i'd ***really*** appreciate some help.

thanks!

karen ;-)

Well there ya go! Perhaps it was just that the Info-Mac stuff was all flat.
It was in a directory of its own, so of course there must have been a
hierarchical file system. Stupid me (memory IS the second thing to go).

Subject: TurboCad 3D/2D - Reviews?

Hey Folks, I need to know if anyone has experience with TurboCAD 2.0 - 3D.
I am interested in an inexpensive CAD program to help me layout plans for
furniture and help designing renovations on my home. The price for
TurboCAD as advertised in MacWarehouse is attractive, but I cannot find any
reviews in the magazines. If anyone uses it and has some info I would
apprreciate it.

Thanks

Subject: Viewing .gif images on 9" screen

I have recently found an online magazine which is of interest to me ,
however the whole magazine is made up of .gif images and are made with
JPEGView View . The problem is that the images are formated as regular 8.5
by 11 paper , when JPEGView displays the image it shrinks it lengthwise to
fit on my 9"screen , this really buggers up the lettering to the point of
none recognition , and since JPEGView has no scrolling feature there is
little that I can do short of crop and zoom all of the areas that I want to
read and this gets rather tedious . My that was a long sentence wasn't it
.:-) Now what I need to know is wether there is an add on or program that
works in conjuction with or is a whole seperate program from JPEGView that
has something like a scrolling (scrolling lengthwise) feature in it that
will allow large pictures such as this to be seen and viewed in regular
size easily , and something that will open these .gif images . Any help
would be much appreciated .

cheers Tristan

Subject: Virtual Memory problem

I recently tried turning Virtual Memory on, but when it restarted it
displayed a Sad Mac. Then, I had to re-install the System software for it to
boot up.

I use an LC II with 4 Megs of RAM, 256 Megs of HD, and System 7.0. (In the
'About This Macintosh' window, it shows my computer as an LC, not LC II.)

Any help will be appreciated.

Here is a solution I found to work quite well.

Subject: [*] Eudora to Database v1.2

ETD v1.2 is a HyperCard stack that reads Eudora mailboxes (don't worry, it
only reads them, causing no damage!), and formats the messages into a file
suitable for importing into a database or spreadsheet. I've included a
template for FileMaker Pro=AE. The following information is parsed out, in
this order: Mailbox Name:, From (Name):, From (e-mail):, To: & Cc:,
Subject:, Date:, Reply-To: & In-Reply-To:, Organization:, and of course the
original message text. Having your mail in a database makes it much easier
to summarize, report on, and use. If you need to use the power of a
database on your e-mail, give ETD a try.

Version 1.2 adds the ability to translate your message using either the
standard Mac ASCII character set or the ISO Latin 1 set, making ETD much
more friendly for my West European users.

Two queries.

1. How come my Duo210 has gone silent since I installed system 7.5 and
update 1.0? My Sound control panel claims to be version 8.0.3. Any
hints???

2. I just aquired a functional Apple Crate, complete with original
diskette but (of course) no manual. It was working perfectly when the Plus
it was attached too died. I want to use it on my daughter's SE to give her
a bit more than the stock 20meg she now has. a) How do I determine and set
the SCSI address number? b) What will be needed in the was of termination
(there is nothing else on the SCSI chain)?

Reply direct if you like.

"I have a 4meg Plus with Radius accelerator broken. I have a working
""Imagewriter with Thunderscanner and broken HP Deskwriter. I am sort of
""wishing that someone would find profit in using the parts or fixing them
""even."
Why, thanks very much, Paul! If we can't get the Plus up on its own two
feet and running, it will serve as a wonderful repository for parts for the
other Pluses we have at the school computer lab where I teach here. And
the Imagewriter we can certainly use!
Now, how many of you have other pieces of old discarded Mac machinery you
consider "junk?" Like that 80MB or 40MB or even 20MB hard drive you threw
in the back of your closet 3 or 4 years ago? Not that much good to you
now, eh? But I could use it to turn one of our older Pluses into a
*really* much more useful teaching machine. Even those old external 800K
floppy drives!
As Paul said "... but to just go into a land fill would be a waste." No,
no, no, _please_! Besides, they aren't biodegradable!
Or how about that slow-as-an-old-three-legged-dog 2,400 bps modem gathering
dust under your bed since you updated to 14.4 kbps or 28.8 kbps?
Worthless, no? NO! We could use them for a future project I have in mind
for connecting other local schools to our school's computer lab, bringing
other schools even less fortunate into communication with us.
If you don't have a local school you're already donating your used
equipment to, or if they've already said "No, we can't use it, it's not
WinTel," consider donating those odd pieces to our school here in
Mac-deprived central Mexico. We would *ahem* of course, consider accepting
donations of newer, finer Mac equipment such as Mac II's, LC's, Quadra's,
peripherals, etc. that your company or organizaton has deemed obsolete
and/or unfit for continuing use. If you're willing to pack it up and ship
it to the border (Laredo, TX) there's a commercial service standing by
there to walk it through customs and deliver it to us here in San Miguel de
Allende (at my expense).
You can communicate with me first by e-mail at:
[email protected]
and I'll give you all the necessary shipping details. And I'll furnish you
a certificate of donated equipment value on official school letterhead in
English (for the IRS if you like) *and* in Spanish (to hang on your wall to
impress all your friends with your kind-hearted benevolence! ;-7)

GdA (Gracias de antemano),

Memo

Any man who hates MS-DOS and WinTel can't be all bad.
