G3 iMac not accepting Tiger install
As the iMac has no DVD drive, I'm trying to use target disk mode from a MacBook Pro to install Tiger. I put the iMac into TDM, popped the Tiger DVD into the MacBook, and it booted. However, when I get to the point of choosing a disk to install onto, the iMac in TDM shows up but says that OS X cannot be installed onto the drive.

Re: G3 iMac not accepting Tiger install
You have to reformat a FireWire drive that was previously used as a PowerPC boot disk to install Intel Tiger on to it. You do this by using Disk Utility in the Menu Bar of the booted restore DVD.
Of course, this doesn't matter in this situation because the operating system a MacBook Pro restore DVD installs isn't going to work on an iMac G3 or any PowerPC anything for that matter.
You're going to have to locate a retail copy of Mac OS X Tiger install CDs, which do exist (it's 4 CDs if I remember correctly). I have a set myself, for use on iMac G3s and Pismos and such with the same optical dilemma you're having.

I am now telling the computer exactly what it can do.
