I sure hope this isn't a hoax, but I just got e-mail from

Try the following URL:
http://emulation.net/macintosh/index.html
It gives information regarding emulating a Mac Plus. You don't get much more 16 bit than that....!

vMac might be what you want.
It might be less trouble to buy an old Mac capable of 16-bit
addressing via eBay. You can probably find an SE/30 for under $40.
SEs appear to be going for as little as $10.

Subject: 1. slow mac 2. connecting to ISDN of small network
Dear List,
I have 2 questions:
1. Over the past month my iMac is getting increasingly slower. I've
done what I thought is needed - rebuilt desktop, zapped PRAM,
defragmented HD and checked HD for problems with Norton and
DiskWarrior, limited virtual memory to 1 MB. Nothing helped, the
computer is stil slower then was before - takes too much time for
apps to launch/perform tasks, Can some kind soul advice what should I
do. I can't reformat HD right now.
2. I think about installing ISDN line here. Since in Bulgaria Macs
(and ISDN btw) are not very popular, thus the technician at the
telecom would hardly help a lot, my I ask you for comments about
connecting 2 iMacs (and iBook which I'm supposed to receive in couple
of weeks) to Internet (there are ISP that offer ISDN connections),
just how to do the modem connection (as far as I know the iMac/iBook
build-in modem will not work with ISDN line), etc. Or point to a web
site where I can find answers.

There is also TechTool Pro 3. It is a wonderful diagnostic tool, and comes with a disk defragmenter as well.
Also, Alsoft has PlusOptimizer which optimizes HFS+ drives, but is not as flexible as other tools. Supposedly, DiskExpress Pro will be available to optimize HFS+ drives, but it has been a long time coming, so I wouldn't hold your breath. It will work with just HFS drives, but the literature indicates that it only works with MacOS up until MacOS 8.6, so with 9.0.4, I would stay away from it, even though I know that there are some people are using it with 9.0.4.
Hope that this helps...

I've been using Norton Utilities for Macintosh for years, including
the defragmenter module called Speed Disk. A couple of years ago
there were some incidental problems involving HFS+ volumes, but all
that's been resolved and now NUM runs fine and does its job.
I use NUM 5.0 Speed Disk with OS 9.0.4 on a G3/266 with no problems.
The boot disk with 5.0 is Mac OS 8.6. I haven't tried NUM 6.0 yet,

I haven't had any direct experience with the loading of MacOS 9 on a UMAX, but this info should help...
First, instead of PowerTools, get FWB's Hard Drive Toolkit 4.0. Run, don't walk....
Next, startup from the MacOS 9 CD and launch the installer. On the screen after you Agree to the software license, you will find an "Options" button. Select that and then uncheck the box to have Apple update the Hard Drive Drivers.
Then, you should be able to install as desired. If it locks up on you during a newly reformatted (with HDT) drive, then the two things that you want to look at are the drive itself and possibly the memory installed.
Hope that this helps...

Hi Scott,
I think the problem (since it works directly, but not via
the hub) is probably with crossover/standard cabling.
First, be sure you are not using the uplink port on the hub
(usually the last one or two ports). I just pulled that
swiftie myself by not looking where I was plugging in. Have
you read the website Three Macs and a Printer? Look at
for the difference between
crossover and non-crossover cables. (You could also by a
crossover adapter that switches the receive and transmit
pairs and see if that makes it work with the hub!)
If it isn't a crossover wiring issue then I wonder if
somehow you are running into the problem that
autonegotiation is slightly broken (a 10/100 Ethernet card,
by ANY manufacturer, may not be able to negotiate either
speed unless it is FORCED to one speed, which varies by card
and OS).
This is an overview of what I think are the most likely
problems. Hope this helps!

Thank you for the good words. Yes, MacMoney 4.02.11 and MacMoney 3.55.02
both work with OS 9.0.4. I have tested them with the last 'final

will run in the 'Classic' environment of OS X (and do so in the beta OS

Subject: RAM Disk Startup?
Hello,
I have a PowerBook G3/400 (the SCSI model) with 192 MB RAM. Recently a few
tests with a RAM disk to see how fast it fast it was, and I must say it is
really amazing! Then I tried copying a system folder onto the RAM disk, but
unfortunately I wasn't able to select it as startup disk in the control
panel. Any ideas? Am I missing something? I'm running OS 9.1.
TIA,
JPP

Subject: Repeat: Anybody heard of these games?
I submitted a query a week or two ago, but suddenly the digest stopped
coming, and I didn't see my query in it the next time it came out.
First game: Like Tetris; changes include that blocks fall in groups of four
in either square or line fashion; colors are red and blue (that's the
default, at least); and to remove a row, one must get at least four blocks
into either a straight line or a square. (So, two blocks over two blocks
scores, as does a straight line of them.)
The other game was a "word-Tetris" where one removed lines of blocks,
diagonal or vertical, by forming words. Blocks fell individually, and each
contained a letter. The dictionary could be edited, too. (This game was on
the Macintosh Demo Games CD that came with my Performa 600 long, long ago.)
Thanks in advance,
Andrew Merenbach
