The first thing that I would do would be to start the machine with the shift-key down (and the network cable disconnected), then remove/delete the following:
File Sharing CP prefs
AppleShare Prep (in the Preferences Folder)
AppleTalk Preferences
Then plug the network cable back in and restart. If that doesn't work, then repeat the above and add the following to the files to delete (or any that are present):
File Sharing Extension
Apple Enet
Apple Ethernet CS
Apple Ethernet CS II
Apple Ethernet LC
Apple Ethernet NB
Apple Built-In Ethernet
EtherTalk Phase 2
and copy them back over from the MacOS CD's system folder.
It THAT doesn't work, it looks like a MacOS re-install is in order.
When you do the install first boot from the CD and remove the Preferences Folder out of the system folder. After installing, make sure that the file sharing works. Then boot from the CD again, and remove the new Preference folder out of the system folder and put the old one back in, minus the 3 prefs listed above, and restart. This will help to determine if a system preference of some kind was the culprit (as has happened to me before...). You can go from there if you wish....

Subject says it all, anyone know of a program to do this, I don t need all
the other features of programs like Cleaner5. I want to burn a Video-CD
via toast, but need the MPEG-1 first.
Alternatively, does anyone know if iDVD will do this (no I don t have a
Superdrive Mac ;-(, but hope to see a FireWire version someday).

Following my other postings about my Powerbook freezing when it tries
to wake from sleep (problem starting with update to OS 9.1), I tried
the typical housecleaning of rebuilding the desktop and zapping
(using Techtools) the PRAM. Now Eudora (version 4.3.1) identifies
itself in the Application menu as Old Eudora. What happened and do I
care?

I think that this is the problem. RamDoubler, like other forms of virtual memory, uses disk space when it needs to. This can slow things down quite a lot, and when combined with a mechanical device like a CD drive, might cause the symptoms you mention.
Try removing RamDoubler, or setting it to refrain from increasing the RAM. If you regularly run with 160 Mb worth of software loaded, try narrowing down the applications to only the ones you are actively using (it doesn't take THAT long to quit one and start another), or reduce the amount of RAM that your common apps use.

If your needs are simple, such as including a "Page last updated" indicator, this is easily done with Parsed HTML. Include a line such as this in your page:
This page last updated .
You will also need to rename your page to "pagename.shtml" so that your HTTP server gets the idea that it should be parsed. Alternately, you can put a file titled ".htaccess" in the same directory as your web pages; its contents should be
AddType 'text/x-server-parsed-html' .html
This forces the server to parse files ending in ".html" before they're sent to the requesting client. Parsing, among other things, will substitute that strange looking HTML comment with the date on which the page was last updated.
You can do a lot with parsing. Pick up a good HTML book, such as Laura Lemay's "Teach Yourself HTML" (and other similar books) and you can read more about it. For an actual reference once you know the basics, the Osbourne book ("HTML: The Complete Reference") is better. Both, naturally, are available on Amazon.com:
CGI scripts can change files, of course, but they have to be run-- and that's usually done from a structure such as an #echo directive. And I don't think that it can change the file that's currently being referenced. What some sites do is to make the entire contents of their web page into a CGI call, then in the script itself they build a web page on the fly. However, this definitely qualifies as "advanced."

Thank you to all that had solutions for me. To anyone who sent a personal
email, I hope I have responded. Bad mojo on me if I haven't.
The answer appears to have been to delete the PPC Registration Database. As
soon as I read that suggestion, I smacked my head and said 'Doh!'. I seem
to recall that from somewhere in the past.
Before deleting the file, I tried another solution to run Apple Applet
Runner. It ran without any problems which showed it was not the solution.

Well, while doing the 4.3.3 upgrade to Eudora, I found where Old
Eudora came from. Seems that when I did the 4.3.2 update, I renamed
4.3.1 to keep it around in case I had problem and then promptly
forgot to clean up after my careful attempts at backup. When I
rebuilt the desktop, it obviously found the old copy. Now to only
remember to clean up after myself this time.

Hello Howard,
Reading about your troubles could it be that the screen has a static charge
picked up from whatever and the first waking up takes it off the screen??.
Perhaps treating the front of the screen with an anti static preparation
what will not damage the plastic may help. Be sure the screen can handle
whatever you spray or rub on it. Just an idea.
