Subject: (A) replacing a CD-R with a CD-RW?
Yes, you probably can. I have a couple of old CD-300E external drives. I
managed to connect and use an internal Teac CD-R55S for PC in a Mac7200 (no
CD) CPU, then decided I would be better off swapping it with one of the 300
drives, which allowed me to use it with both Mac and PC as an external CD
writer. The old drive works fine as an internal.
No idea whether it would work with anything other than a SCSI drive as I
was working entirely on the basis that the relevant power supply and SCSI
plugs fitted
As an aside, be careful when upgrading the Teac firmware for the PC version
using the patch supplied by the manufacturer. It didn't work for me and now
the drive only works with Mac

Subject: (Q) iMac Locks up - OS 9
I recently upgraded to OS 9, but did not specify a clean install. Now,
if I leave the computer on for several hours at a time, whether sleeping
or not, I always come back to find it locked up. The mouse still moves,
but no menus open and I cannot do anything. Is there a problem with OS 9
that needs to be updated, etc.? I end up unplugging it for a few
minutes, and then restarting.
This problem does NOT occur while I am using the computer, only while it
is sitting for long periods unused.
I have an original iMac, 350 mhz, 64 meg RAM, original HD. I have tested
the HD with Disk first Aid and Techtools Pro, and they do not find a
problem. Could it be an extension conflict, and what do I do to find and
correct that?
Then only external device attached is a Que! Drive CD-RW. I installed
the Toast extensions to use it. Before I installed OS 9 I was using OS
8.6 with no problems. For what it's worth, the CD of OS 9 Install I used
was not from my machine, but came with a graphite DVD iMac that belongs
to a friend of mine. Could it have installed something that conflicts
with mine?

QIF Categories converts Quicken Interchange Format (QIF) banking or
credit card transaction files, adding Quicken categories based on the
description of each transaction. It is
useful for converting QIF downloaded from online banking or credit
card web sites before importing them into Quicken. To convert a QIF
file, just drop it onto QIF Categories.
You can configure QIF Categories as a browser helper application for
files of type application/qif to have it invoked automatically on
downloaded QIF files.
QIF Categories converts each transaction in the QIF file dropped on
it by: 1) Deleting any existing category; 2) Adding a category
associated with the transaction's description, or getting the
category from the user if none is associated; 3) removing the plus
sign from transaction amounts (because not all versions of Quicken
allow plus signs); 4) optionally adding an indication that the
transaction has cleared; 5) optionally extracting a check number from
the description (unless the transaction already has a check number);
6) optionally changing the description and category to values
associated with the combination of the original description and the
amount; and 7) transferring all other parts of each transaction to
the output file. You can convert the input file in place or choose a
different output filename.
System requirements:
* System 7 through 8.6; not tested with MacOS 9
* Macintosh with at least 4 MB of RAM

Random Number Generator is an AppleScript program which will display random
numbers within a specified range. Once the user has specified the minimum
and maximum possible results, a number is generated and displayed in a
dialog; from there, the user has the options of starting over (and thus
entering a new range), generating another number within the same range, and
quitting the program.
Until the registration fee of $3.00 is paid, the program will display a
dialog box every startup (that will go away after three seconds) requesting
you to register; clicking on the button labeled "Register" allows you to
enter your name and registration code.
Changes in this version include a cleanup of a complete rewriting of the
code; it now functions more efficiently, and I've implemented a new,
experimental registration system that shows much promise. I'm still signed
up with Kagi Shareware, at , but I've had some trouble
with their service, so I'm not accepting credit cards, currently, and all
orders must be (1) US Cash; (2) a money order cashable in the US; or (3) via
PayPal. I much prefer the last method, as it gets the money to me more
quickly, and gets the code to you quickly as well. (If you're interested in

WYSIWYG Font Preview (WFP) is a utility to quickly and easily view fonts
in their own typefaces. Preview font, size and style from within one
convenient location. Unlike other font viewers, WFP lets you see all
your fonts together in a WYSIWYG menu, so you don't have to go through
them one at a time.
WFP was designed to be utilized like a desk accessory accessed from the
Apple Menu. WFP's "File" menu includes an "InstallS" option, so an alias
of WFP can be installed into the Apple Menu with the click of one button.
Version 1.1 features a new Aqua appearance reminiscent of Mac OS X, as
well as the original Platinum appearance. You can toggle betweent the

It's nothing wrong with IE; it's something wrong with JavaScript. The
hypertext transfer protocol, where most web pages come from, wasn't built
for it.
Seriously: it might have something to do with conflicting standards between
Netscape and Microsoft. Browsers made by either company sometimes have
completely different commands and interpretations.

Subject: Name That Apple Menu Modifier
I need some help please. I am looking for a utility that will allow me to alther the Apple Menu, specifically let me re-arrange the items in a particular order, add divider lines, etc....
I have found Amico v2.1.1, and it was developed in 1997, so it may not be OS 9.x compatible (I have emailed the author and am awaiting confirmation....)
I also know that I can do so via renaming items with letters, but I can't stand to see zApplications or pUtilities. It looks unprofessional, and is just plain unsightly. (I JUST thought about renaming via the , which would work OK. Looks like I might do that if a utility can not be found....)
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Subject: PC Discs no longer mount...
After suffering through a crash and reinstalling my files, I find that PC
formatted CDs no longer mount on the desk top but I'm faced with that
familiar choice: "eject" or "format."
In checking my system folder I can't find any extensions that are missing or
should be there. Maybe I missed something. I suspect it's a simple thing
but I can't figure out what to do to correct it.
Any suggestions would help. Thanks.
