Subject: [*] 1994 Major League Baseball Icons
Enclosed is a collection of baseball team logo icons I found for a friend
on America Online. Thinking they might be of interest to others on the Net
I am submitting them for inclusion in your archives. These are high
quality icons most of which look great even in black and white though the
readme file states that they look best at 256 colors.
I did not create these icons only found them on AOL.

Subject: [*] Aquarium Kit II; for After Dark's Fish module
WHAT IS AQUARIUM KIT ][?
"Aquarium Kit ][" contains 63 new enhancements to that great After Dark=
=81
module, Fish! It's a colorful assortment of new fish and other aquatic
critters, including plants, rocks, and even new bubbles. Many of the fish
and turtles swim not just horizontally but also diagonally up and down.
Some appear only at the top, bottom, or middle of your screen. Some fish
are large, some small. You choose which you want. Or install them all. And
if you feel whimsical, check out the janitor fish or the mini-sub towing a
sign panel! Some people take their aquaria very seriously; others don't.
There is something here for everybody!
"Aquarium Kit ][" represents many, many days and nights of work and is
not free. However, the software is very reasonably priced at only $6.95.
Please take the time to pay. And please remember that shareware is not a
gift. It is a method of marketing software that is totally dependent on the
integrity of the consumer. Thank you in advance for your cooperation and
support!
To date, approximately 7,500 people have downloaded the original
"Aquarium Kit" from America Online alone. In addition, "Aquarium Kit" has
appeared on countless CD-ROMs, BBSs, disk collections and commercial
services. And I have received many, many requests to create a sequel. Well,
here it is! All new work is completely original and far superior to the
original "Aquarium Kit."

Subject: [*] Personal Log v1.5.4; a digital diary keeper
(Please note: Once again I introduced a bug while fixing another. Hopefully,
this time it didn't happen.)
Personal Log v1.5.4
Requirements: System 7.0 or greater.
Have you ever wanted to keep a diary? Do you need to document your actions?
Would you like to be able to easily take notes? Do you currently keep notes in
one, big, disorganized Word file?
If you answered yes to any of these, then Personal Log is for you. Personal Log
allows you to keep a collection of notes in a single, easy-to-use file. You can
password protect this file, search it's entries, and even "speak" the entries
(if you have Speech Manager" installed). Unlike other "note taking" programs,
Personal Log's interface is very simple and easy to use. Personal Log fully
supports System 7: Balloon Help is enabled in every menu, dialog, and window;
you may use Apple Script to control Personal Log; and the interface is in full
color (when available).
Improvements since v1.0:
* Now supports styled text editing.
* Supports Apple's new Drag & Drop technolody (if installed).
* Subject & Date sorting in the log windows.
* Faster file loading.
Personal Log is shareware; the fee is US$15. See the accompying manual for more
information.

Subject: [*] ProFont Programmer's Font Update
ProFont is an enhanced version of Monaco 9 which contains
improvements useful to programmers. Andrew Welch is the author
of the font itself. I am the author of this distribution.
The changes in this version of the distribution are mainly in
the documentation:
1) My address has changed
2) Answer to the FAQ "Why is the ProFont suitcase empty?"
(it's not, it's just that it only contains the "reserved"
font Monaco 9, so the Finder makes it look empty)
3) Admonition to make sure the ProFont suitcase is locked
before installing under System 7.1.x. It's meant to be
locked, but apparently some unstuffing utils don't set
that bit correctly.
Enjoy ProFont!

Subject: [*] RAM Doubler Indicator Patch: Revised "README"
All that has changed regarding this submission is the "Read me,
please." file, and the identical text associated with the patch
itself. I was receiving e-mail from people wondering what the
activity indicator was. So I made some revisions.
About this patch...
This patch is distributed as "gratitude-ware", in gratitude to the
many fine programmers who have produced far more sophisticated
freeware and shareware products for Macintosh users throughout the
universe.
This patch will turn on the activity indicator in version 1.03 (and
possibly earlier versions) of RAM Doubler. The activity indicator is a
small white dot (a single pixel) in the upper left-hand corner of the
screen that blinks when RAM Doubler is doing it's stuff. (Because some
Macs, such as powerbooks, have screens without rounded corners, this
indicator is invisible.) I find the indicator useful because it aids
me in determining why my system is not running as quickly as I think
it should be. With Apple's virtual memory, I can hear the hard disk
spin, and see the hard drive activity light. As distributed, RAM
Doubler provides no such indication of it's efforts.
This patch does NOT allow you to increase the "multiplier", i.e. this
patch will not turn RAM Doubler into RAM Quintupler, or the like.
Inquiries about this patch can be sent to it's "author", Ross E.
Bergman, at "[email protected]".

Copyright =A9 1990-1994 Michael S. Engber. All Rights Reserved.
Save A Tree is a text file printing utility designed to conserve
paper by printing on 1 page what would normally use 2 or 4 pages.
Since Save A Tree only handles 'TEXT' files, I expect its primary
audience will be programmers printing source code. Although, the
word wrap option makes it useful for general text printing too.
Because of the small font sizes used, Save A Tree works best on
high resolution printers.
Use of Save A Tree is free of charge. I encourage you to share
it freely. Copies of the source (THINK C) may be obtained for
$20 and a disk w/SASE.

Subject: [*] Smart Alarms; a personal reminder system
Welcome to Smart Alarms version 8. The original, and still the most
complete and easy-to-use reminder system for the Macintosh.
Smart Alarms is a personal reminder system that lets you set up to 1600
reminders, each with its own message. Your reminders will appear any time
your Macintosh is switched on, whatever application you are using. You do
not have to take any special action to receive reminders.
Smart Alarms is like an infallible personal secretary. With Smart Alarms,
you can be sure you never miss appointments, always remember people's
birthdays and pay your bills on time. You will get a new reputation for
returning people's calls when you say you will!
This version incorporates thousands of user requests and suggestions, since
the first version in 1985. There is now a Calendar window, where you can
drag and drop your reminders from one day to another. Using the new
"button console", you can navigate in the calendar window as easily as you
can play and rewind a tape recorder.
Smart Alarms is NOT intended to be a group scheduling program. It is
simply (and always was) designed to be the best reminder program ever made.
Enjoy!

Forget Word! I use DynoPage from Portfolio Systems ([email protected]) for
the same purposes you mention and have been very pleased with it. It
automagically prints the front sides in any number of sizes; then you run
the paper back through to print the backs (or print all on the front if you
only want originals for copying or printing). You can do this from any
application, including Word, and on any printer, including QuickDraw
inkjets.
Example: I like to print LONG documentation files (more than 25 pages)
4-up, front and back. When I get done, I slice and dice the paper, collate
the four stacks, and bind them. Voila! A perfect 4.25 x 5.50" booklet,
printed on both sides!
It will also print on various smaller papers such as DayTimers, and you can
even buy paper from them. It comes with a HyperCard stack for setting up
your own print format--but you might not need to, because they give you
skillions of 'em. There's also a demo version of DynoPage on the nets.
It's v2 and lacks many of the features of v3, but it is fully functional.
Tech Support is on America Online and is very responsive. Check it out!
Of course, I have NO connection whatever with Portfolio except as a
satisfied customer.
Hope this helps. Cheers!

to at commands, but it just won't pick up the phone, resulting in "no
dialtone" messages, even though the cable and jack are fine.
I got in touch with global village on AOL, and they suggested that it might
be a "polarity" problem in the phone line. My phone repairman told me that
most phone equipment is guarded against this problem.
My question: Has anyone else been experiencing this sort of problem? Any
suggestions?

Subject: How do I define custom paper sizes for StyleWriterII?
To: [email protected]
Status: N
Greetings,
I'm looking for a way to convince my StyleWriterII to accept
custom paper sizes. I'd like to be able to define new sizes
in the same way that PowerPrint's scroll box of default and
custom paper selections can be extended. I'm running system 7.1,
update 2.0.1 and system enabler 1.3.1, with StyleWriter driver
version 1.0.
Please send replies to [email protected], I'll summarize back to
the group.

Can you see the printer when selecting laserwriter in the chooser? If yes
you're using with system 7 an old version of SendPS.
Fix : move the laserwriter file out of the extensions folder so it is in
the system folder at the first level. Then restart and run SendPS again.

Subject: Annoying MacLeak Letter
We Macintosh freeware users owe Peter Lewis and Quinn a debt of gratitude.
They have taken time from their lives to write MungeImage, a wonderful
replacement for MountImage that isn't even an INIT. It's free, source code
is included and it works. Unfortunately, the Internet proves that a
friend's .sig rings true, "True, no one knows when you're a dog. But
everyone knows when you're an idiot." There was a letter written to this
week's MacWeek that did exactly that.
They printed a letter to the editor from one Tony Herr. He tries real hard
to warn people of a legitimate problem. Unfortunately, he's got his facts
wrong and has hopelessly disgraced himself. It appears that he was trying
to keep up on the issue, but blew it totally by mixing up the names of the
participating software. For example, if you read his letter and replaced
the name MungeImage with the offending MountImage, he would have been
right. Unfortunately, he also remembered Peter's name, included it and
just total blew his chance at even claiming that it was a typo.
Well, I asked Peter if he knew of any bugs. He didn't and handed off the
response to Quinn. His letter to the MacWeek editors follows. It includes
a quote from the original letter.
Remember, MountImage is evil. MungeImage is good. Free too.
Jon
PS: MungeImage 1.1 mounts DiskCopy images as r/w or r/o disks. Ideal for
doing installs!
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
Greetings
I'm writing in response to Tony Herr's letter entitled "Using wrong disk
image utility can munge your system update". I feel this letter slights me
unfairly in two entirely separate ways. I quote...
>Second, and more importantly, using the free utility MungeImage by Peter N.
>Lewis to install software is a no-no. It has been reported that it
>sometimes corrupts the files being installed, resulting in an unreliable
>system. Many people on the Internet who complained about System Update 3.0
>creating problems with their system used MungeImage to install the
>software.
Firstly MungeImage was not written solely by Peter N Lewis, it is a
collaborative effort between Peter and myself. There is only about 25
lines of text in the MungeImage documentation -- it's particularly
distressing that some people never make it past the /first line/.
Secondly MungeImage does not munge disk images. It was written as a
replacement for the MountImage control panel precisely because MountImage
commonly causes incorrect system installs. Indeed the very name MungeImage
is a (silly) play on words on MountImage's name and functionality.
Peter and I have not heard of any cases where MungeImage had led to bad
system installs. As far as we are concerned, MungeImage 1.1 mounts disk
images perfectly -- and, if you don't believe us, you can FTP the source
code and check it yourself.
Share and Enjoy.

MicroAPL is pleased to announce details of an upgrade to the Macintosh versions
of APL.68000 Level II. The upgrade combines a series of major enhancements, for
example in the way in which the user interface may be programmed, with a new,
native version of APL.68000 Level II for the new Power Macintosh.
'Native' Power Macintosh Support
Version 3 of APL.68000 Level II is available both for 680x0-based Macintosh
systems and for the new Power Macintosh range. The Power Macintosh version runs
in native mode on the Power Macintosh and has been produced by MicroAPL's
Assembly Language translator, PortAsm. PortAsm has been also used by other
Macintosh developers, such as WordPerfect Corporation, to port their
applications to the Power Macintosh.
New Object-Based GUI Programming
Included in Version 3 is a new system function {quad}WI which provides a
simple, consistent and object-based method of controlling user-interface
elements such as buttons, list boxes, pop-up menus and pictures. Objects are
created using {quad}WI, and their behaviour is defined by setting properties.
And to help APL users develop cross-platform applications, the implementation
of {quad}WI is largely compatible with Manugistics' APL*Plus III for Windows,
making it straightforward to move applications between the Macintosh and
Windows PCs.
The object classes supported by WI are Window (or Form), Document, Dialog,
Static text, (or Label) Button, Radio button (or Option button), Check box,
Edit field, List, PopUp menu (or Combo), Icon, Picture, Scroll bar, Line,
Rectangle, RoundRect, Arc, Movie and Timer.
New Callback-Based Event Handling
In addition to the GETEVENT function previously available, Version 3 of
APL.68000 Level II implements callback-based event handling. A 'callback' is
an APL function (or other expression) which is run when a given event occurs
(for example, if a Button is pressed).
To give you full control of event handling, callbacks are run during the
{quad}WE (wait for event) system function, to which you pass a timeout value as
the right argument. This allows applications to continue processing events
during lengthy calculation or other processing. You also have full control
over whether APL's default event handling takes place, which together with an
event triggering feature makes it possible to write APL custom controls.
Play Quicktime Movies from APL
Amongst the object classes supported by APL.68000 Level II is the Movie
object.
This allows an application to take advantage of Apple's Quicktime movie
technology, with the possibility of multi-media applications under APL
control.
Improved Programming Environment
Many enhancements have been made to the user interface, further developing
APL.68000 Level II's position as one of the most user-friendly APL programming
environments. These include:
oNew 'Windows' menu, with multiple sessions identified by workspace name, and
improved dialog design.
oSupport for Apple Events - multiple workspaces may be launched simultaneously
at start up, and double-clicking on a workspace icon during APL execution opens
a new APL task.
oImproved File Menu with Import and Export options to exchange Transfer format
files with other APLs
oNew Print menu items allow print of workspace listing as well as contents of
any APL window.
oImproved editor facilities including new find/replace facility.
oCloser conformance to Apple's System 7 user-interface guidelines.
oRemoval of limits on number of edit windows open simultaneously (up to overall
limit of 99 open windows).
oUp to nine APL tasks can run simultaneously!
oNew user preferences dialog for startup configuration
100% Upwards Compatibility
In implementing the new features in APL.68000 Level II, we have retained 100%
upwards compatibility for existing APL applications - even if you have written
680x0-family auxiliary processors and want to run them on a Power Macintosh!
Royalty-Free Packager Included
MicroAPL pioneered the concept of royalty-free runtime APL licences, allowing
you to distribute your APL applications without paying licence fees. Version 3
of APL.68000 Level II now makes this even easier by including as standard a
'Packager' which turns your APL workspace into a standalone Macintosh
application.
Business Graphics Workspace
The new PlotMac workspace allows you to create simple business graphics with a
few easy APL commands, automatically scaling and labelling axes. You can create
line and scatter plots; histograms; and pie charts. The graphs can be shown
on-screen, printed or exported to other applications.
Free APL Toolkit
Finally, we have included a copy of the public domain APL Toolkit produced by
the Toronto APL SIG which contains a wide variety of useful APL utility
functions that will run under all types of APL interpreter.
Requirements
APL.68000 Level II Version 3 runs on all models of Apple Macintosh, including
running in native mode on the PowerMac range, and requires Apple System 7.0 or
later. APL.68000 Level II Version 3 will automatically use the hardware
coprocessor on those 68000-family Macintosh computers which support 68881/2
operations.

Subject: Appleworks to Mac (Q)
Before giving my Apple IIGS to my parents, I copied all my AppleWorks
files to a Mac formatted disk, figuring I could open whatever I wanted
using Works. But the Mac doesn't recognize them as Appleworks files,
so while I can open them in a text editor, I can't open them in Works.
With most files, it's no problem since I'll never need them, but there
are a couple of database files that I'll need. Is there a way (using
Resedit, eg, or copying them back to a Prodos disk) for me to get the
files recognized and translated to Works files?

Subject: ARA and PP MC144MT II modem problem solved
I guess this is a case where RTFM applies -- but who reads modem manuals?
If you remember, I was having problems getting the new Practical
Peripherals MC144MT II to connect to our Netblazer ARA server using the
modem script for the PP FX144MT modem, which was its predecessor.
Practical Peripherals had said it "should work", but I figured some small
change in the CCL script was needed. The problem, it turned out, was that
I was using the serial cable from my old modem (being too lazy to shut down
and swap cables). The cable that came with it has pins 12 and 23 tied
together, which I assume makes it a hardware handshake cable (am I
correct?) Anyway, with the correct cable, it does work with the old
script. Now my only beef is that they made the metal part of the cable on
the computer end too short so that it just barely goes into the modem port
on my Centris 650 and hangs precariously there. It seems to work, but I
don't trust it.

Subject: Canvas 3.0.x failing to snap to grid exactly
I've been using Canvas since version 2.0 and have always had problems with
vertices of polygons not snapping exactly to grid points, so that for example,
line segments which should be exactly horizontal are not quite, but have
a slight tilt. I'm currently using 3.0.6 and it's still driving me batty.
I've been complaining to Deneba about this since 2.0 and have variously been
told
that either 1) they don't see the problem or 2) it's been fixed in version
2.0.x,
2.1, 3.0.x etc., up to the latest 3.5.2. As of 3.0.6 it certainly isn't
fixed.
Q. Has anybody else seen this problem?
Q. Is it really fixed in 3.5.2? (If so then why the heck wasn't it fixed in
3.5.0?!?
Q. (On another gripe) Is there any reduction in the number of Postscript
errors
generated when trying to print from 3.5 vs. 3.0.x?
I'd appreciate any feedback to --

Subject: CIA World Fact Book 93
Just downloaded the CIA World Fact Book 93 file from a Gutenberg archive. To
find it with archie you must search for world93. The unzipped file is over 2.5
megs and zipped it is approx. 1 meg.
I opened the file with Word 5.1. Then I changed every sub-title which began
with
a * followed by the name of a country to a level 1 to be able to use the
outliner in Word. But the text is to big to do that even giving Word 4.0 megs.
Changing the style is OK but you cannot outline such a big text.
Perhaps the best way would be to save each country under a separate file, then
using Easy View, it would be easy to access them. Also for each countries you
have divisions, like politics, geography and so on.
I have seen a Hypercard Stack indexing the CIA World Fact Book but some datas
were deleted probably to make the stack smaller.
I would like suggestions on ways to treat that huge text and I would be able to
post it to sumex.
The text is very clean with a paragraph mark at the end of each line. I know
with Word 5.1 I can remove them but that would not improve the text. Thanks

A recent discusion has been taking place on a list server
dedicated to the Progress RDBMS. Currently Progress does not have any
Macintosh version of their software(development or run-time). There
seem to be a large number of Progress users that are using
Macintoshes, but they are using them only as terminals. The question
was asked of the Progress mail group of who would be interested
in having a Macintosh version of Progress. Some unsubstantiated
comments from Progress indicate that they do not believe there is a
large enough Macintosh user-base for them in invest the time and money
in a Macintosh version. I am issuing this survey to the info-mac mail
group to try and get a good sampling of Macintosh users that
might be interested in a product like Progress.
Some of the features of Progress are:
- Mission critical, transaction based relation database
- Excellent 4gl
- Multi-platform(DOS, Windows, UNIX, VAX, BTOS/CTOS)
- GUI development tools
- SQL Compliant
- "Dataservers" to access other databases(Informix, Oracle, etc.)
"Progress enables you to build mission-critical applications for
client/server, host/terminal, or mixed-mode environments using a single,
integrated toolset. Applications produced using the Progress
Application Development Environment(ADE) are scalable, portable and
reconfigurable across a wide range of computing environments without
additional development effort". - Progress Software Corporation
I would like to ask the Macintosh community if in your current
position/environment, you would be interested in a product like
Progress. If so, please respond to me directly with information about
your environment(number of users, application type, network/hardware
configuration, etc.). I am going to compile these results and post
them to the Progress group, info-mac and hopefully send them to
Progress directly. This information will NOT be used for any sort of
automated mailings or marketing purposes, other than to gather a
sampling of opinions. There seems to be a lack of "good" database
tools that are native to the Macintosh and as a Mac and Progress user, I
personally believe that Progress would be a great addition to the
Macintosh application environment. If you have any specific questions
about Progress feel free to ask me or you can contact Progress directly at:

Maybe this is a well-known trick, but I just discovered it...
Many users of Easy View have complained that Eudora's quotes with

(Adam Engst made a similar remark in his book TISK)
Not being a user of Eudora, I did not appreciate this complaint.
The standard answer has been "this is part of setext design".
For about a week I've been using Eudora, and I know what is meant!
Fortunately, Eudora is configurable to the extreme. Here is the
simple trick:
Close Eudora (you have it open all the time, right?)
Open "Eudora Settings" in "Eudora Folder" with ResEdit
Make a STR resource #7009, and put "> " in it
Close it and start Eudora

Subject: How do I unbootablize a disk partition?
If a disk (floppy or hard) has ever contained a system folder, it miraculously
remains "bootable" for the rest of its formatted life. No harm done, it seems.
But if your System folder is on a partition that happens to sort alphabetically
after some bootable partitions, the startup procedure is slowed down by some 4
seconds for each partition that your Mac vainly tries to boot from! An obvious
solution is to rename the partitions, so as to make the System partition come
first. But I've grown accustomed to those names and I want to keep them. I
tried
a less obvious workaround, by disk editing the two first characters of the boot
blocks that identify a partition as being bootable ($4C$4B -> $00$00). This
works! However, I don't know if this is a legal procedure, possibly generating
problems later on. Can anybody tell me if this is safe. Can anybody point me to
software that unbootablizes safely?

First, one doesn't "need" 115K bps for a 28.8K modem. There might be some
small speed gain from 115K, but 57K will be very close. In real life, you
-rarely- achieve more than a speed doubling due to data compression. You
-never- see speed quadrupling.
Secondly, the Mac serial port is limited by the hardware to 57.6 Kbps in
asynchronious mode. Yes, AppleTalk is faster, but AT is synchronious.
Also, the Serial Manager defines the speed of the serial port, and the top
speed defined is 57.6 Kbps.
Thirdly, you might be able to get some sort of NuBus serial port card,
which adds a faster port. However it would have to use the Comm Toolbox to
define the port, and certain non-CTB-aware software (like Zterm) might not
be able to take advantage of the higher speed (because Zterm's author
assumed that only the built-in serial ports would be used).
Fourthly, even if you added in a high-speed serial-port card, and even if
you could use CTB apps to handle the port definition problems, you may
still find that your Mac CPU is simply not fast enough to service the
serial port at that speed without dropping bytes.
This is mainly because the Mac UART only buffers a byte or two; at 115
Kbps, the CPU would have to read the port at least once every 8
micro-seconds: an application cannot be assured that it will get the CPU
that often. As an example, most Macs running System 7 File Sharing have
trouble running the serial port reliably faster than 19200.

I'm not positive this will do exactly what you're asking, but Alex Levi
Montalcini just uploaded a control panel that might solve your problem:
ftp://sumex-aim.stanford.edu/info-mac/g ... her-11.hqx
I tried the following script; I only have one resolution, so I don't know
if this will do what you want, but it may come close:
Open "Bjr6000:System Folder:Control Panels:Monitors"
Wait 2 seconds
Click 306 108
Wait 12 seconds
Type tab
Click 360 90
Click closebox
Enough equivocating. See if it works, and if so, don't forget to send Mr.
Montalcini your shareware fee.

Tom,
I just wanted to comment that Word 4/5.x doesn't come with a template, (you
can tell by looking in the Sample Documents folder and then in the Mailing
Labels folder...). A few of the templates look useable, but none of them
look like they are intended as disk labels.
I haven't seen a template floating around on the nets, but you can set one
up quite easily. Here are a few pointers:
1. Set the top, left, and right margins to the blank space (if any) that
surrounds the labels on the label sheet. Set the bottom margin to zero. Set
the margins _before_ making the table.
2. Make a table having rows and columns that match the rows and columns of
labels on your physical label sheet.
3. Format the table so that the rows are "Exactly" the height of the
distance from the top of one label to the top of the next label down. For
example, if your labels are 2.5 inches tall with .2 inches between the
bottom of one label and the top of the next label, set the "Exact" Row
Height to 2.7in.) Type "in" for inches or you will end up with points.
4. Set the Space Between Columns to zero.
5. Use the indent markers (the triangles in the Ruler) or use the Paragraph
dialog box to "indent" the text from the column edges. (If the indent
markers don't show on the ruler, click the Indent marker button toward the
right side of the ruler.) The left indent should be equal to the distance
you want the left edge of the text from the left edge of the label. The
right indent should be equal to the distance you want the right edge of the
text from the right label edge PLUS any space between the side edges of the
labels.
Note: to select an entire table, press Option and double-click the table.
To select just one column, press Option and click the column.
Hope this helps,
tonya

Two very good programs need another programmer/publisher to take them in.
I'm referring to OnLocation, the very fast disk content indexer, invaluable
for those people with hard disks who wonder where the hell (or folder) they

an excellent disk sharing utility bought by Novell by IBS, and lost

publishers. Can't some enterprising publisher buy them and run with them?

Hello,
Further to what I stated in my earlier Info-Mac post - I neglected to say
that this problem might possibly be a new development occurring in the time
since I recently replaced the original 40MB HD with a new Quantum 127MB HD,
and just recently replaced the 4MB SIMM with an 6MB SIMM, bringing the
system to its 8MB max. It is possible that this problem might have started
to become visible after these configuration changes - but who the heck
knows?
This morning I erased and initialized/formatted the hard drive, reinstalled
System 7.1. There was nothing else on that HD except the system. I tried
the sleep/unsleep thing and it still bombed. And yet, it will
sleep/unsleep when I boot from the Disk Tools floppy. Ho-hum...

I have acquired SoftWindows and find it extremely slow, no doubt in part

experience to date and the fact that the software is running a 286

it seems to have no 'beneficial' interaction with the Mac operating system.
I am very interested in the new emulator from Utilities Unlimited

Subject: Prices of sofwares in Europe
Just bought SVM Macintosh published in France and compared the prices of
softwares. Would you believe that Ram Doubler is 175$ canadian which is
approx.
125$ U.S. It is a joke when the current price is 55$ U.S.
For hardwares it seems to be better, but not as good as here in Canada or USA.
For example a Global Village Teleport Mercury is 750$ canadian which is
approx.
525$ U.S. I think I have seen the same product for 325$ U.S.
Here in Canada we are lucky to be able to buy directly otherwise it would be
the
same. I remember in the beginning how sofwares were expensive at my friendly
Apple dealer ;->. But when people started buying south they had to adjust. Now
we have companies offering reasonable prices in Canada.
That situation does not help the Macintosh community. I know the subject have
been addressed before, but I taught it had improved.

Subject says all. I have gotten it to dial into the supposed PPP
dialup. When that picks up, though, it spews out garbage (x's and ~'s)
and then drops me. I am using the following modem init string:
AT&F0&K0S37=9N
which (I believe) disables all compression, and data checking (&F0),
all flow control (&K0), and forces the baud rate to 9600 (S37=9 and
N). Has anybody gotten this modem to work with PPP? This is on a
Classic II 10/40, with System 7.1, and *lots* of inits. Please
respond by email, and I will summarize with the solution. Thanks!
Thanks very much to everyone who responded. The problem turned out to
be with the dialup, *not* with my setup, which we were able to get to
work with another PPP provider (mv.com).
I have since signed up with TIAC (The Internet Access Company) in
Bedford, MA ([email protected]), on Adam Engst's recommendation, and that
has worked perfectly. Of other Internet providers in the Metro Boston
area, the World does not offer SLIP/PPP, and Netcom is too expensive
($50 for installation, $18/month for a SLIP line, *plus* $2/hour).
TIAC for $49/month ($20 installation) gives you 300 hours/month, which
is effectively unlimited. I hate to sounds like an ad for TIAC, but
this service is working out really well, so far.
Modem init strings: all I am now using is AT&F1, which sets the Supra
to the Mac factory defaults. Anyway, here are the credits for people

Subject: Success with Avec Scanner (thanks!)
Recently I posted a gripe about my girlfriend's Avec scanner and our
headaches with trying to get it to work on the SCSI chain. Thanks to
Traci J. Ingram in particular, who
informed me that the weird PCish parallel-port-looking thing (which I
was indeed assuming to be a parallel port for people who wanted to run
the Avec off a PC) is actually a pass-through port to which one attaches
a regular system SCSI cable instead of the more conventional daisychain
cable. Thanks also to Allan Bloom who gave a
response worth checking out as well.
Actually, it should have occurred to me that the scanner wanted to be
FIRST on the chain--my little Logitech grayscale handscanner has the same
annoying me-first proclivity, although instead of a pass-through port
it has a system cable hardwired to its backside (leaving no question as
to where to put it on the chain).

Greetings all,
I need the technical reason why a 2400 baud data/9600 baud fax modem can send
the fax data so much faster. I realize in newer modems that adding fax
capability is so trivial and of so little cost that most modems these days are
9600/9600 or 14.4/14.4 (or even 28.8/28.8? How many 28.8 fax machines are out
there?), but why in the older modems is it possible to send fax faster than
regular data. It's all bits on the line, isn't it.
I need this for our user group newsletter, so please email me in addition to

critters, including plants, rocks, and even new bubbles.

To date, approximately 7,500 people have downloaded the original

Personal Log fully
supports System 7: Balloon Help is enabled in every menu, dialog, and window;
you may use Apple Script to control Personal Log; and the interface is in full
color (when available).
Improvements since v1.0:
* Now supports styled text editing.
* Supports Apple's new Drag & Drop technolody (if installed).
* Subject & Date sorting in the log windows.
* Faster file loading.
Personal Log is shareware; the fee is US$15. See the accompying manual for more
information.

Since Save A Tree only handles 'TEXT' files, I expect its primary

Because of the small font sizes used, Save A Tree works best on

Cheers!

Thanks

* Database Survey for Macintosh Users
*
**************************************************************************

* Please note this survey is not sponsored or endorsed by Progress.
Please only call them for product information.
NOTE: Please post this to other Macintosh groups that you know of. All
of the replies can be forwarded directly to me.
Thank you for your time, and I hope to hear from you.

Maybe this is a well-known trick, but I just discovered it...
Many users of Easy View have complained that Eudora's quotes with
">" (no space) are not recognized by EV's style parser.

Subject: Is SCSI just SCSI or is there a Mac SCSI and an Everybody Else SCSI?
I seem to remember from a long time ago that, in addition to the funny 25-pin
SCSI connectors, Apple had also mis-used the signals on the SCSI-bus, so that
you had to use only "Mac-compatible" SCSI peripherals, or you might damage
a "Standard" SCSI device.
Does anybody else have this memory? Can anybody shed light on the question?
Has Apple cleaned up their SCSI act with introduction of the Quadra line?
Please reply by e-mail to "[email protected]", as I do not get time

I tried the following script; I only have one resolution, so I don't know

Tom,
I just wanted to comment that Word 4/5.x doesn't come with a template, (you
can tell by looking in the Sample Documents folder and then in the Mailing
Hope this helps,

tantalizing entry "Bad Record Index" errors, fixing on . . . page 312!
Arghh! BAD index! My period of free (though insulting) support from

is really on, so would someone out there please help me?

Subject: PB170/System Update 3/Problems continued...
Hello,
Further to what I stated in my earlier Info-Mac post - I neglected to say
that this problem might possibly be a new development occurring in the time
since I recently replaced the original 40MB HD with a new Quantum 127MB HD,
and just recently replaced the 4MB SIMM with an 6MB SIMM, bringing the
system to its 8MB max.
Ho-hum...

Subject: PC Emulation on PowerMacs
I have acquired SoftWindows and find it extremely slow, no doubt in part
due to Inits running in 68-emulation mode. I had intended to order
additional copies for the rest of the folk in our office, but based on my
experience to date and the fact that the software is running a 286
instruction set, I am going to hold off. In fact I will be entertaining
alternatives. I am not terribly interested in the Orange Micro stuff, since
it seems to have no 'beneficial' interaction with the Mac operating system.
I am very interested in the new emulator from Utilities Unlimited
International, and was even more intrigued by the recent announcement of
Apple's new 486DX card for the PowerMac. Does anyone have any information
going beyond that which appeared recently on the net, in TidBits and from
others? What about addresses and numbers for Utilities Unlimited
International?
Thanks.

Help!
I just received my brand new PPC Upgrade card from a dealer here in
Grenoble with the *French* version of the installation disks. Since it will
take months for the dealer to get hold of the US version I would to know if
someone out there wants to have my set in exchange for the US version.
Is the US software available on the apple server? (This morning I was not
able to log on - probably too much traffic).
Any other help is much appreciated. Please respond to [email protected].

Subject: Getting MacPPP to work with a Supra FAXModem 144LC

Subject: Thread Manager and MODE 32 (Q)
So.... Does anyone know of a way to run the Thread Manager on a Macintosh II?
Seems from the docs that TM is completely incompatible with MODE 32 and since
the 32 Bit System Enabler doesn't run on a Mac II it would appear that the
only way to run TM is to remove MODE 32 and go back to 24 bit mode which
isn't acceptable. Does anyone have a workaround? Has anyone found a way to
make the 32 Bit Enabler run on a Mac II? Do I need to break down and buy a
PowerMac? I was really hoping to hold out for a 604 or 620 class machine

Logitech's MouseMan works really well. It comes with a control panel
(MouseKey) that allows you to configure each button. You can set them to
single-click, double-click, click lock, f-keys, etc.

Subject: Why is fax faster than data?
Greetings all,
I need the technical reason why a 2400 baud data/9600 baud fax modem can send
the fax data so much faster. I realize in newer modems that adding fax
capability is so trivial and of so little cost that most modems these days are
9600/9600 or 14.4/14.4 (or even 28.8/28.8? How many 28.8 fax machines are out
there?), but why in the older modems is it possible to send fax faster than
regular data. It's all bits on the line, isn't it.
I need this for our user group newsletter, so please email me in addition to
replying to the digest if you could. Thanks very much.

Here's the setup:
Q605 on desktop running Sys7.1 and MacTCP 2.0.4. I can access my Mac,
Windows, and UNIX boxes using Telnet and FTP over Ethernet. If I switch
MacTCP to use PPP 2.0.1 to access my Internet provider, I loose access
to my local machines -- MacTCP wants to send everything over the PPP
link.
How do I configure MacTCP/PPP so it will use Ethernet for the local IP
addresses and use PPP for the other IP addresses?
Enquiring minds want to know...
