Subject: [*] 500 Cards v0.9; a card game
Having taken quite a bit from the archives over the last two years it's time
give something back - my very first finished Mac Application!!!!
500_Cards lets you and your computer partner play that ol' favourite card
game 500 against an all computer partnership - first team to 500 wins (or
first to -500 looses!). I'll avoid making any grand promises about the
computer players abilities - they're okay but can/will be improved. The
cardtable window fits snuggly on a 9" monitor though more recent macs get
the advantage of colour!
The good news - I've tested this game on a Classic, a Colour Classic and a
LC475 (all running Syst7) and the thing works just fine.
The bad news - I've also tried it on our CSC shop's demo 6100 and the game
unexpectedly quits before opening it's window - if anyone wants to donate
a PowerMac I'll be happy to sort out the problem (if it's not something
really simple anyway).

Subject: [*] BBEdit 2.5 Demo Package (a text editor)
The attached BinHex file contains a StuffIt Deluxe archive of the
latest BBEdit 2.5 demo package. The demo has been updated to track the
latest maintenance release of BBEdit 2.5 (currently at version 2.5.5).
BBEdit 2.5 is the popular and critically acclaimed text editor for use
by programmers, online service users, and anyone else who needs to
edit plain-text files. Among its many features are integrated support
for THINK C/Symantec C++ (version 6.0 and later, including 7.0), XTND
text translation, powerful text and multi-file searching (including
"grep" regular-expression matching), and the unique ability to browse
and search project documents created by THINK C/Symantec C++, THINK
Pascal, and Metrowerks "Code Warrior".
BBEdit also features a clean and powerful user interface, which makes
it easy for both new and experienced users to make the most of its
capabilities.
The demo version is fully functional, but cannot save. The demo
package includes detailed pricing and ordering information.

Subject: [*] Controls GH 1.1; source code for two CDEFs
Enclosed is the updated C code and resources for a pair of control
definitions (CDEF's) which I originally released last fall. The
controls are a simple slider, similar to the Sound control panel's
slider, and a flag identical to that used by the Finder in list
views. I'm supplying this so other programmers can easilly
include these elements in their own dialogs and windows (they have
no direct use for the general public).
For an application which uses both, see my recently released Siege
Watch 2.0.
Changes:
The flag control is unchanged (it's already perfect).
The slider now implements a solid thumb instead of the default
outline dragging. I've also removed the pageup and pagedown
control parts.

Subject: [*] Extension Shell 1.3 - Help for INIT writers
Extension Shell is a library of source code for writing System 7
Extensions. Full source code is provided, as well as six sample
Extensions demonstrating how to write Extensions with Extension
Shell.
Extension Shell acts as an Extension-independent loading mechanism.
It takes care of the generic stuff needed by all Extensions (showing
icons, installing things into the System Heap, posting Notification
Manager messages), and reduces the amount of coding needed to produce
new Extensions.
To write an Extension with Extension Shell, you just decide what you
want installed, compile it into a code resource, and paste in
Extension Shell. Trap patches, VBL tasks, Shutdown tasks, Time
Manager tasks, Gestalt selectors, low-memory filters (e.g., jGNEFilter),
and blocks of code can all be installed through a simple
"fill out the details in a table" mechanism.

There are lots of desktop calculators out there. Why one more? I made this

doesn't create auxiliary files on the disk, and don't have big manuals.
So, the first goal on Kalk design was to make its window the same size of
Apple's. Then remove all digit buttons from the panel, making area for more
information (six of the 20 levels of the stack are shown). The only buttons
remaining are those used everytime and those that are hard to remember
without a label (Drop, Swap, Enter, Undo, Change Sign, Clear). Digits are
entered via keyboard, and the special functions are grouped on the "Kalk"
menu.
Using Kalk is very like doing simple math on a 28- or 48-series HP
calculator. As for the Apple calc, the numeric keypad of your keyboard
(hope you have one) is the best choice.
Attached is a BinHexed StuffIt! archive, containing the application program
and a short documentation in both MS-Word and TeachText formats.

Enclosed is Launch Apps for system 6 users. I am rereleasing this version

scan your hard disk so that Launch Apps knows where your programs are. From
then on you can launch programs by selecting them in the list and clicking
the launch button. This version works on system 7 but you should use the
other version of Launch Apps for system seven since it has more features
and takes advanage of

Mosaicon is a game in 256 colors on HyperCard 2.0, which includes the Xcmd
Colorizing HyperCard of BUNG DABBA.
Before opening the stack, allot the maximum of Ram you can to HyperCard.
Install the fonts CouRier, Helvetica, Symbol & Times in your system.
The game is very easy : you have to draw a mosaic with 6 colors (at least) on a
checkerboard by moving a cursor. This places a different color each time you
move it according to the direction it gets.
You can create (Drawing mode) or recreate (Playing mode) a mosaic, save it,
display it where when and as you want, play a blind game, with a limited number
of moves, a limited time, bonus/malus, inversion of moves I
You can also entirely customize the game and choose your cursor, background

modules from FaceWare. ViewIt is one of the best Mac programming tools
available for creating powerful windows containing many views and custom
controls. In addition to ViewIt, this package includes a complete list and

custom controls, animation, communications, scripting, database management,

Subject: 7th Guest Warning
If you have a Power Macintosh, avoid the game "7th Guest" by Virgin.
The program crashes when you attempt to save a game.
In order to get to the crash or even to play the game, you must first
listen to an eight minute introduction. There is no option to bypass the
introduction until you have saved the game at least once. So, you must
spend time, energy and money in order to find that the game will not run on
your machine.
I tried increasing the memory to 10 megs, so the problem is not related to
memory requirements. I stopped experimenting after contacting their Tech
Support who advised that the game does not run on a Power Mac; it only runs
on the machines noted on the box. There is no return policy and no upgrade
to a compatible version.

My wife and I wanted to both play MUD over Christmas Vacation from home

SLIP line. I then set up VersaTerm (Comm toolbox communications program)
for a VT100 session over ADSP. The Comm Toolbox is *so* cool. I then
opened a Telnet session to the Terminal Server software on the SLIPped Mac,
and from there opened a Telnet session to the MUD server. With this setup,
I could have multiple Macs on Appletalk, all sending ADSP packets to the
SLIPped Mac.
This doesn't actually let you route TCP/IP packets. You would need a
router and a separate subnet at home to accommodate that. So, no 2 player
IP Bolo or anything like that. I once tried to route IP packets using
Apple's Internet Router, but that was a lesson in frustration.
This is not a public domain solution, but it does work for Telnet
sessions. I hope this helps.

Joseph, why do you want Apple to support more than it produces? A 3x
CD-ROM is just a tad non-standard. The producer of that format should
support it. If you didn't get the software with the drive, yell at the
folk who sold you the drive, not at Apple.
Sheesh! Apple is goofy enough. I think we can profitably yell at them
for their own goofinesses.

What you need is "PortConnector" from Stalker Software (415) 927-1026 or
(800) 262-4722. See review in MacWorld (June '94, pg. 161).
This is just one of a few software that allow for ARA over TCP/IP. I cannot
remember the others. You can always try asking Stalker Software for a
competitor review.

Subject: Fontographer and other utils
ERIC DSAVIES SAID ON INFO_MAC TONITE:
likI ANd Can anyone tell me whether Fontographer or any other font creation
utility allows one to use scanned images as the basis for a new
font? In other words, if I see a non-copyrighted "A" that I really
like and would like to scan it in and have it be the "A" of a new
font I'm creating, is it possible to import the scanned "A" into
the font creation utility rather than drawing the "A" from scratch?
Also, does Fontographer convert between Type 1 and TrueType fonts?
Has anyone had any experience with a conversion utility called
Metamorphosis Professional? What would you recommend as the best
tool for converting between Type 1 and TrueType?
Eric,
Around the time of the MacWorld Expo here in San Franciscoi, I was looking
at Fontographer and FontMonger. At the Expo Fontographer was 235 dollars
and FontMonger was 75, but with less features. I opted for the FontMonger
app to do this project I had contmeplated for some time, scanning in this
fanzine editor's handwriting and assigning it to keys, much like the
GROENING font available at sumex-aim. The rep was burnt from four days of
sales repping, and was vague if not outright confused when answering my
questions, though he seemed to understand what I wanted to do. With thire
competition just 3 or 4 booths away, you'd think...
Well anyways, I got it home and started reading the manual.. First off, I
couldn't
jsut turn on my scanner and have FontMonger magically absorb the image; I
had to go through another app that could read the image. So I scanned in
with either Omniscan or Applescan, then opened in either an old Freehand,
or Deneba Canvas, made an outline of the letter, saved it, closed the app,
opened FM, and tried to import it. I have gone through countless
combinations of the above apps and different "save as.." with limited
success. Basically FM wants outlines in either Illustratoror a recent
Canvas file. So saving in either Freehand or Canvas as an Illustrator
file might do it, but it loses quality and most of the time all I get is a
a little square instead of a letter.
o in answer to part of your question, yes, FontMonger can import SOME EPS
files of letters, logos, or images, and place them on a key in a new font.
You can even put that EPS file on the key of an old font if you want. But
it is very picky as to what app's EPS file it is willing to accept. Be sure
that the file is an outline of the image, not the image filled in in black,
too.
I talked to the Fontographer rep, and he made it sound like Fontogrpaher was
a designer's dream tool that can do all the above with ease. I have read
this elsewher, and tend to believe it. But you should research Fontographer
to determine how many differnt apps you need to get this task done. With
FontMonger I have tried various combinations of six apps to alomst no
success, all because I didn't have Illustrator or a more recent release of
Canvas. (Of course the real prblem may be that what is called an *EPS* file
is unstandardized and varies from app to app.) While the reps are happy to
discuss what the manual says the app can do, they seem to be unaware of
the more creative possibilities the potential user has in mind.
FLAMER DISCLAIMER: None of the above is intended as a slag against anyone at
Ares SW (FontMonger) or the manufacturers of Fontographer. Regardless of
the frustration I have had with my first project, I still want to use
FontMonger to make my own fonts, and am willing to work with it more. I jus
thave to do some of it on other people*s computers.
Also Eric, FontMonger and I believe Fontographer also, convert any type of
type to any other type of type.

I'm having a problem with HyperCard 2.1. For the past couple of weeks,

Subject: Quadra 660 AV compatibility; which AV-Mac to choose ? [Q]
I'm about to purchase my first Mac with AV features. Since I've a low budget
(about $2000) this is in my opinion the best option (but if you've better
options or suggestions I'm very anxious to know). Of course the new
PowerMac's are far more interesting, but I'ld like to get some
experiences with an AV-capable Mac, and maybe in the near future (within 1-2
years)
upgrade to a PowerMac.
If have been playing with some AV-like applications on a friends LCIII,
of which the sound-utilities and image-applications where the most interesting
for me.
However a number of questions still remain:
- Does anybody know of a list (and where to find it) which summarizes
problems with applications which do run on e.g. an LCIII/LC475 but do
not run on a Quadra 660AV ?
- What about applications using the LC475 microphone and compatibility with
the Quadra 660AV ?
- Can I still use e.g. MacroMind Director on the Quadra 660AV ?
IMHO for the budget I've in mind two options exist:
+ buy a LC475, which has at least stereo sound capabilities, and extend it
with an external CD300. After some time buy a new PowerMac with AV
extensions.
+ buy the Quadra 660AV (available in the Netherlands for about $1800),
and use within some time the logic-board upgrade to a PowerMac
(which is
fairly expensive).
If you've experience with AV related applications on whatever kind of
Macintosh and may have suggestions for me what the best strategy is for
me I'm very interested. Thanks in advance.

Subject: Quick Text File Reads
This message was sent using a evaluation copy of InterFinder 2.0a6 68K
Norton Utilities has a Find command replacement called Fast Find. It finds
all files containing an identified text string in the file name. Now, the
neat thing is that once it has located files, it permits the file to be
viewed by clicking on a magnifying glass icon. Evidently it will read *any*
text file, including ones created by Telefinder or AOL. Opening the text
creator application is not required - you don't even have to have it on your
computer - and the text file pops up very quickly. Once or twice, Fast Find
was the ONLY way for me to read a file I found on the Net.
This is useful to me because I use a Telefinder BBS that is connected to the
Net via Interfinder, and ALL the messages I get are identified as "Email" or
"From>" with a date and a bit of the sender's address. Needless to say, it
is not easy to remember what was in each message. Norton Fast Find gives me
a way to quickly get a list of all files with "From>" in the title and do a
quick scan of each until I find the one I want, much faster than opening up
my word-processor, in large part because I don't have to wait for
translations of the various files to occur. To top it off, I can copy from
the opened files.
But this is awfully kludgy. I can't navigate between folders to select
likely files to look at. So I got to wondering - is there a DA that will do
this, but also permits navigating between folders? (Unfortunately, Norton
failed to stick this option into its Directory Assistance file navigator.)

Subject: QuickTime 1.6.2
>From eWorld's Apple Customer Center on QuickTime 1.6.2 (newly uploaded):
NEW FEATURES OF QUICKTIME 1.6.1 and 1.6.2
Smaller Size
The QuickTime 1.6.2 system extension takes up only about 20K of memory when
it is not in use.
Converting Audio Tracks to Movies
You can convert tracks from audio compact discs into movies and add the
sound to your own movies. To convert an
audio track, you must be using a program that can play QuickTime movies,
and you must have an AppleCD 300 or
300i CD-ROM drive connected to your Macintosh. Follow these steps:
1. Insert an audio CD into your computer's CD-ROM drive.
2. In the program you are using, choose Open from the File menu.
3. Click Desktop, then double-click Audio CD.
4. Click the name of the audio track you want to convert to a movie.
5. Click Convert.
6. Type a name for the new movie, and choose a place to save it.
To choose additional settings or to trim the length of the movie, click
Options.
7. When you are ready to convert the movie, click Save.
The audio track is saved as a QuickTime movie. You can now copy and paste
sound from it into other movies.
Macintosh Easy Open Support
QuickTime 1.6.2 supports the Macintosh Easy Open system extension. You can
use this extension to translate sound
and image files from a variety of formats into QuickTime formats--just by
double-clicking them.
ColorSync Support
QuickTime 1.6.2 supports ColorSync. You can use the ColorSync control panel
to obtain accurate color in your
compressed still-image files, for all the devices connected to your Macintosh.
Improved Grayscale
QuickTime 1.6.2 now supports 4-bit grayscale dithering, providing a wider
range of shades of gray.
Smoother Text
You can now have smoother-looking (anti-aliased) text in the text track of
movies.
Cinepak Compression-Decompression Software
The Apple Compact Video compression-decompression software is now called
Cinepak. The features and
functionality of the software have not changed.

Subject: RAM Doubler
I just read a piece in Info-Mac Digest #64 about needing AppleTalk 85.x.x
or later to do successful network copies with RAM Doubler.
Recently I tested RAM Doubler on a computer belonging to a local
corporation (registered user), and had a major crash when attempting to
do a large Finder copy to an external hard disk. SpeedyFinder7 v1.5.9c
was also running, with its Maximum Finder Memory feature enabled.
Only the Built-In version of System 7.1's LocalTalk was running. How
does this relate to AppleTalk 85? Aside from Ram Doubler considerations,
is there a way to load a newer verison of LocalTalk on start-up?
Best regards,
Traci J. Ingram

Subject: Serial printer driver
Folks,
I'm looking for a serial printer driver (Chooser document) to use with my
Diablo 620 daisy wheel printer. I need only the simplest functionality
here, no graphics, no font control, no underlining, no shifting, just print
straight ASCII characters. I have an RS-232 cable, just need to be able to

I looked in sumex (did I miss one there?). Does anyone know where else I
might find one? Thanks.

I say, it is free after all. I think the new version is wonderful. The
interface is nicer than before and things work faster. I love being
able to resize windows on the fly, and the interaction with Unix is
much more complete (winch signal, xterm rename, etc.). I am delighted
with the new version.
If you have specific complaints, send them to the NCSA folks. They have
real jobs though so don't complain if they can't immediately get back to
you about the problems with their donation to the world. I've always
gotten replies from them eventually, and in fact got the beta source for
2.6 a long time ago and implemented some of my own desires which I then
forwarded to them for inclusion into the final product. I think they
have done a wonderful job with this product; I'm sure that the
_inevitable_ bugs will be fixed as time goes by.

Subject: three button mouse
What are the choices for two/three-button mice on the Mac ? We tried the
Logitech mouseman, but somehow this mouse does not seem to be compatible
with LCIII and Centris 610 machines. We got one mouseman, but it didn't
seem to work. When plugged in, the cursor hardly moved and it seemed like
the buttons were stuck. When a replacement mouse exhibited the same
behaviour, we did some experiments, and noticed the mouse works on older
machines like an SE, Classic or MacII but not with Centris or LCIII/LC475.
Our conclusion: the mouseman is incompatible with these machines. Logitech
will introduce a new version soon, but we need a 3 button mouse NOW.
So my question: what other 3 button mice are there on the market for Mac ?
Please reply to me directly.

Subject: Video and the PowerMac 6100/60AV
I've had my Power Mac for a couple of weeks now, and for the most part I
really enjoy it. I bought the AV version because you can supposedly run
two monitors at the same time using the two video connections on the back.
I also bought two monitors to connect to the two video connections.
Doom on dummy me! Neither of my bright, new, expensive, Apple monitors came
with the adaptor cable needed to connect to the AV outlet in the back. Oh,
one of the outlets is the standard fifteen-pin model. The other is quite
obviously non-standard, and Apple--according to my contacts--(1) doesn't
have them in stock, and (2) has them back-ordered till who-knows-when. Ah,
the people who thought to advertise this delightful machine as being capable
of running two monitors didn't think to include an adaptor with the AV model!
The regular 6100, by the way, comes fully equipped. Savings? I guess about
$5.00. End result: massive frustration.
So, I wonder how many others who purchased the AV with the expectation of
actually being able to use the two monitors--none of the third-party makers
of monitors have adaptors either--are, like me, stuck somewhere between
TARFU and FUBAR. At least I have loads of fun plugging and unplugging monitors,
that is when I can find the connection on the AV card because it's tucked in
way back there under an overhang on the rear of the case.
I know. It's my fault. I believed them. Don't you.

Dear Netters:
I have been developing some tutorial stacks (Using HyperCard 2.1) in

In finally getting around to checking that problem, I found the following
code (see attached file) that does some "merry xmas" stuff" that attaches
itself to the stack script of the home stack (unless locked) and also
attaches itself to the stack script of any stack open at the time.
Disinfectant 3.5 says in the notes that it DOES NOT protect against
HyperCard viruses. Does anyone have information or suggetions for removal?
Please reply to me directly; if of general interest, I'll post a summary.

Very recently I installed about 20 new TrueType fonts. Word 5.1a seems
ambivalent about them:
The font menu in the main menu bar seems to work fine. For example if I
choose Monaco I get Monaco. However, The corresponding Font selector in the
ruler bar seems out of kilter. For example, when I choose Bookman Light I
get Hiroshige Black, Garamond Light Narrow yields Eras Bold, and so on. I
have not dircerned an obvious pattern in the substitution (there has to be
one!). I will install MasterJuggler and its utilities and see if there in a
font number conflict.
As I said, I have no problem with the Font Menu, which must use font names
for selection in preference to font numbers or fonds. Certainly, I would
appreciate an informed opinion as to what is actually going on.
Thanks.

Subject: Working with Pen on Macintosh.
Hi,
for information-curiosity, and waiting someone
hears:
This week we have been playing some macintosh programs
over a pen-computer, and it results that the windowing system
have some logical flaws when used with the pen:
Basically, it becomes a left-handed machine for the dialog
boxes and the menus, and as a right handed one when
using scroll controlls.
This is, if you are righthanded, your hand will shadow the
dialog options when ticking them, and in a minor way the
submenus. If you are left, you ll not see the document when
scrolling!
So if as some rumor says, pen could be sold as alternate device, someone
would try a to put a switch left-right to all the options. Even if not,
some control is desirable (by example, I prefer scroll bars in the
left side of the windows, as the right one usually is out of the screen
if the window has been moved).

Here's the deal. I am trying to ftp a program called emacs from the unix sytem
at the university to a PC floppy disk. I then want to transfer the program from
the PC disk to a Mac running MachTen (an alternative to Apple's UNIX). I have
managed to transfer the program to the PC as binary and then used PCExchange to
move the files to the mac but I can't get the program to execute. The unix
shell says 'cannot execute' and when I try to list the contents of the
directory, it says the emacs file has a bad file number.
Any ideas? I have run the utitly that comes with MachTen for converting Mac
text to unix text but to no avail. I also tried the many different file
translators that come with StuffIt Delux. I'm stuck.
You know, Macintosh never irritated me until I started to run other operating
systems. Can you imagine not being able to quit and return to the friendly
Finder?

Enclosed is the updated C code and resources for a pair of control

slider, and a flag identical to that used by the Finder in list
views. I'm supplying this so other programmers can easilly
include these elements in their own dialogs and windows (they have
no direct use for the general public).
For an application which uses both, see my recently released Siege

The flag control is unchanged (it's already perfect).
The slider now implements a solid thumb instead of the default

Subject: [*] Kalk 1.0b1; an RPN calculator
Kalk is a simple RPN calculator, with a 20-level stack, that knows the four
basic operations plus some trig and log functions.
There are lots of desktop calculators out there. Why one more? I made this
one for my own personal use, because I wanted a RPN calculator, but not
that huge monsters I've seen around, almost complete implementations of
scientific HP machines. Those were great calculators, but they fill almost
the whole screen with tens of buttons and switches. At the end of one week
I usually was back to the classic Apple calc, because it's small, fast,
doesn't create auxiliary files on the disk, and don't have big manuals.
Attached is a BinHexed StuffIt! archive, containing the application program
and a short documentation in both MS-Word and TeachText formats.

move it according to the direction it gets.
You can create (Drawing mode) or recreate (Playing mode) a mosaic, save it,

My wife and I wanted to both play MUD over Christmas Vacation from home
so we could keep an eye on the kids. I was able to run 2 Telnet sessions
over the SLIP line. What I had to do was turn my SLIPped Mac into a
Terminal Server. VersaTerm Pro comes with the software to do this.
Phone
Line ( Mac ) Appletalk ( Mac )
=======(Running)---------------(Running)
( SLIP ) ( ADSP )
On the SLIPped Mac, I ran the Terminal Server software in the background.
I set it up to accept ADSP packets and route them as IP packets over the

What you need is "PortConnector" from Stalker Software (415) 927-1026 or

This is just one of a few software that allow for ARA over TCP/IP. I cannot

II CX to 20MB. However rather than getting more memory for the
applications the system now uses 14MB (!). I tried the usual:
set cache to min, no RAM disk, no file sharing, even removed
ALL fonts with no change in system software size. Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Gerald

We will start sending replacement copies of V12 #60 through #64 shortly.
(V12 #59 went out mistitled as a copy of #55, but with different material.)
We plan to send two back issues a day, but will cut it to one if a new

We hope the problem has been resolved and new issues will start flowing
normally. Our apologies for the inconvenience.

The file MSTIconsv2.0.sea.hqx is a ResEdit document containing version 2.0 of

It's pretty much the same as my version 1.0, except it adds a few new icons
such as Mike Nelson, the new Cambot, the Deep 13 logo, and some other stuff.
These icons are in 256 colors. They are also in 16 colors and B&W but they
don't look as good. (Hence the included "cartoon" versions of some...)
Be warned that Mystery Science Theater 3000, Tom Servo, Crow, Gypsy, Cambot,

However we've recently been using a Quadra 840AV with a one gig

I say, it is free after all. I think the new version is wonderful. The
interface is nicer than before and things work faster. I love being
able to resize windows on the fly, and the interaction with Unix is
much more complete (winch signal, xterm rename, etc.). I am delighted

If you have specific complaints, send them to the NCSA folks. They have
real jobs though so don't complain if they can't immediately get back to
you about the problems with their donation to the world. I've always
gotten replies from them eventually, and in fact got the beta source for

Don't you.

Subject: Working with Pen on Macintosh.
Hi,
for information-curiosity, and waiting someone
hears:
This week we have been playing some macintosh programs
over a pen-computer, and it results that the windowing system
have some logical flaws when used with the pen:
Basically, it becomes a left-handed machine for the dialog
boxes and the menus, and as a right handed one when
using scroll controlls.

Any ideas? I have run the utitly that comes with MachTen for converting Mac
