AutoType v. 1.1ur
An OSAX to allow simulated keystrokes from a script.

Automate even applications that *dont* support AppleScript.
If you can do it from the keyboard, now you can do it from a script.
Menu Shortcuts, Dialog boxes, Text input, etc...

Unregistered version allows only A-Z.
Registered version allows _any_ key.
Registration cheap/free.

Subject: [*] CatWalk-1.1.hqx

"The fast, fun game of skill and fur..."

CatWalk is an arcade-style game with a difference.
It will appeal to cat lovers, mice haters, spider haters,
and to anyone who enjoys running, jumping, and cleaning up
after themselves.
The action takes place in a house (maybe your house)
where evil rats and spiders are threatening to take over. It
will take our heroine, Zisa the Devil Cat, a lot of cunning, energy,
and work to make the house safe before her owners come home...

CatWalk 1.1 will run on any Plus-or-better Macintosh running
any system version since 4.1. It will take advantage of many
features of higher end Macs, if available. It is supplied as a
self-extracting archive. I am the author. CatWalk is shareware;
the fee is $10.00. CatWalk may be included on the info-mac CD if the
"About CatWalk 1.0" file is included unaltered.
Version 1.1 fixes a small bug and includes a new email address
for the author.

Subject: [*] CD-discolour

CD Discolour Hack by-Brian Devendorf
This hack will update Ambrosia Software's Discolour so that it will
display a colorized CD icon in place of the generic one normally
present. This must be done on a copy of Discolour, as there needs to
be a separate copy of Discolour loaded for the color floppies. The hack
can be installed with ResEdit. Answer Yes to replace same resources.

Subject: [*] Disk Charmer 2.1.3

Disk Charmer 2.1.x is a neat utility letting you
initialize, quick erase, or verify floppy disks.
It _requires_ at least System 7 to run.
It is the first disk formatter able to initialize and verify disks
(hold your breath) **in background**. To access this feature, you need
the Thread Manager Extension from Apple Computer.
Look for the Thread Manager on ftp.apple.com (130.43.2.3).
It has a nice, modeless interface.
Help Balloons are everywhere.
It supports drag&drop (with the required Apple Events).
It is able to create larger disks: you gain 8.5K on a 800K disk,
18.5K on a HD disk (if you keep one large file filling the disk,
such as a Compact Pro segment).
It is the first disk formatter supporting the handy "Undo" feature
we all know and love.
It has even more features... but I am sure you are already impressed!

New from version 2.1.2:
a little fix in the registration code.
New from version 2.1.1:
Additional disk eject option;
warns when the Thread Manager is installed or un-installed;
does not try to eject the disk if there are open applications/documents on it.

Enjoy yourself and remember the shareware fee!

HyperShare provides some tidy little solutions to the challenges=

=46rist there was MultiShare, the traffic cop for working with stacks=

Subject: [*] Lime Readme

This is the README file for free anonymous ftp distribution of
the demonstration version of Lime (version 2.15). Lime is music
notation software for the Macintosh, written by Lippold Haken
(faculty member at the CERL Sound Group, University of Illinois)
and Dorothea Blostein (faculty member at Queen's University,
Kingston, Ontario).

To use this free anonymous ftp facility, you will need:
2 Meg or more of RAM on your Macintosh,
A program which can decode binhex files (Stuffit can do this),
and access to a PostScript printer.

The demonstration version of Lime is for demonstration purposes only;
it allows you to edit and print sample pieces, but you will not be able
to save your changes. If you have questions or comments, please call
217-355-4500, or send Email to [email protected]. If you would like to
purchase Lime, see the address listed below.

To try demonstration Lime, follow these steps:
(These are System 7 instructions; Lime will also run under System 6.)
1) ftp LimeDemo.sea.hqx and DemoMan.txt to your Macintosh.
(You do not need LimeCProgrammer.sea.hqx -- that is only for
C-language experts who want information on Lime disk files.)
2) Decode LimeDemo.sea.hqx using a BinHex decoding program. (If
you have StuffIt, 'Decode BinHex File' under the Other menu does
this.)
3) Double-click on LimeDemo.sea to expand.
4) Read the instructions in DemoMan.txt for installing Demonstration
Lime on your Macintosh. DemoMan.txt is an ascii text file; it
contains the beginning of the Lime User's Manual. If you would
like to look at the complete manual, ftp LimeManCom.sea.hqx
and decode as described above. It is written in MS word 5.0.

Please send Email to [email protected] if you have questions or comments
about Lime.

I've spent a modest amount of time this past week sending copies of
BackSplash 1.0.2 to various requestors. I'm happy to do it. But one
of our colleagues wrote me saying that the new 1.0.3 version kills his
machine with some regularity. Say what? 1.0.3? What's that?

Sure 'nuff, CompuServe's ZMAC has 1.0.3 of BackSplash. I snagged it.
It killed my Mac. Got a message saying that BackSplash didn't have enough
memory and inviting me to reboot with extensions off so I could kill the
sucker. My correspondent said he was told by BackSplash that it didn't
have enough memory to display the background picture, and it'd ask for
more memory next time, and it lied. I don't know which is worse.

Have any of y'all seen death with the 1.0.3 incarnation of BackSplash?

Might be worth a note or two to Mike Throckmorton?

Is there anything out there (an extension, patch, or program) that will allow

-----------------------------------
I bought a 230 MB Fujitsu HD for my PB180. The following problem revealed:
When I wake up the PB180 from sleep mode I get all kinds of errors and
crashes.
I tried a number of different formatting tools but the problem does not go
away.
I reloaded the System Software, zapped the PRAM and turned extensions
off.....but to no avail.
------------------------------------

Andrew Morse sent me a message which explains what the
cause of the problem is:

Hello, the problem you are having is a result of one jumper (#2 - "Unit
Attention enabled")...........
Remove jumper #2 - it is the second one in from the end AWAY from the SCSI
connnection, or if you prefer, the 6th one in from the SCSI end. That
should solve your problem........

Thanks Andrew, you saved me a lot of time with more troubleshooting!

interacts with BOOTP. I'm hoping that somebody on this list can help us
out a little.

The problem is with Eudora. When it submits a mail message using SMTP,
it sends a HELO command using a domain literal, i.e. it uses your IP
address rather than your machine name. This results in PP giving really
strange headers, such as:

Received: from [130.88.19.13] (actually ade.pa.man.ac.uk) waffle

What this means is that PP has discovered that the machine with address
130.88.19.13 is called ade.pa.man.ac.uk, but that ade.pa.man.ac.uk doesn't
think it has a name. There doesn't seem to be any option in the Eudora
setup which names the machine; nor is there in the Mac TCP setup, as far
as we can see. However, using the "server" rather than "manual" option
in the address setup dialog tells Mac TCP to use BOOTP to obtain an IP
address. The BOOTP protocol also passes the machine name back, so we're
hoping that this is the way to get a Mac to know what its name is.

So, my questions are:

1) Does anybody already use BOOTP on their Mac?
2) Are you using the latest version of Mac TCP?
3) Does the Mac appear to know what its name is?

Alternatively, any other mechanism to tell a Mac what it should be called
would be equally welcome.

The underlying problem here is that the SMTP server on most normal machines
is incapable of handling addresses with spaces in. This is a real nightmare
for people trying to use X.400 addressing, which is often stuffed full of
weird characters, including spaces. The much smarter SMTP server which comes
with PP is quite happy with X.400 addresses, but insists that a machine
both knows what its called and announces its name when it makes an SMTP
connection to deliver the mail. We're running a slightly bodged version of
PP's SMTP handler at the moment which allows the mail through (even though
it moans about it), but I can't guarantee that this "feature" will still
work when we upgrade to the latest version of PP, due in a few weeks.

Thanks for your time, and thanks in advance for any relevant information!

Cheers,

I had similar problems. Dartmouth recently came out with InterNews which
seems pretty bullet-proof. The interface isn't quite as nift y as Nuntius,
but the new app does have equal power. You can't transfer your list of

There are lots accessible via Gopher - just do a search in Veronica
for "dictionary" and you'll find them. If you're using TurboGopher,
search for "dictionary -t7" and it will only find the searchable dictionaries.

Not all may be accessible though...

Don't know anything about MacSLIP, but we know that it works fine with
InterSLIP, MacPPP and ARA. It;s better to contact the MacSLIP authors.

Yes, there are two more on the market :-). HayesConnect and ShadowLAN.

A couple of us were having trouble with our PowerBook 100's. Here's the
symptoms:

* PB comes on when it is plugged in
* PB does not come on when battery is in but plug isn't
* Batteries are all fine

The solution seems to be to replace the fuse between the battery and the
PB. It is located on the circuit board in the upper right hand corner
near the modem bay. It is labeled "F1 5A". I called SOS APPL (they're
ALWAYS nice to me?!?) and the guys gave me the part number.

It is #9220015

He said they're about two bucks for a package of ten. You need to order
them from a dealer; they wouldn't send me one direct.

Of course, be sure not to void your warranty (hell,if it's still under
warranty, why are you reading this! Take it in!). Also, make sure you
know what you're doing; it's SOLDERED in. Make sure to test it with a
continuity tester before you rip it out. Be careful.

Evidently, the problem is the following: sometimes you must boot from a floppy,
and you have to copy items from one floppy to another floppy. You can do that
under System/Finder 6.0.x with absolutely no disk-switching hassles (i.e. no
"Toaster Mode"), whereas you cannot under Finder 7.0-7.1.
The software engineers at Apple thought you would never boot System 7 from a
floppy, least of all copy between two floppies with no external drive. The
hardware engineers, entering the first time the System 7 "Toaster Mode" thought
it was lean, mean and relaxing. So they thought: "Why not removing the external
drive port from the forthcoming Macs, so that everybody will experience the
mind-blowing Toaster Mode"? One guy said: "They will still be able to boot
System 6 and not Toast their Mood". The engineer - with a grin - said: "Too
bad,
I'll make impossible to boot these Macs with System 6".

This is definitely a software shortcoming in the Finder, in my opinion.
We should bash Apple software (optionally hardware) engineering, not Daniel.

Subject: QuickTime 2.0 Press Release

Apple Announces QuickTime 2.0 for mid-1994
==========================================
[adapted from press release]

February 9, 1994 - Further demonstrating its commitment to the
burgeoning multimedia market, Apple Computer, Inc. today announced
a new version of Apple QuickTime , the revolutionary software
that brings multimedia capabilities to personal computers and
consumer electronic devices. The newest version, QuickTime 2.0,
is significant because it provides larger video at faster frame
rates, support for music, and support for interactive television
applications.

Faster Video, Timecode
---------------------
Video on computers is often confined to small windows and played
at less than 12 frames per second, making the video appear rough
and jerky. QuickTime 2.0 provides greatly increased performance
resulting in full-screen movies - without the addition of any
hardware - closely resembling what viewers see on television
today. For example, on a Macintosh LC475, one of Apple's
lowest-cost computers, 30 frames per second video is possible at a
resolution of 320 x 240, or full-screen video (640 x 480) is
possible at 15 frames per second.

A key component of the new video enhancements are new features
that support professional-level video editing. QuickTime 2.0
includes support for time-code, 60 fields per second video and
high data throughput greater than 3MB per second - representing a
300 percent increase over previous versions of QuickTime.

MPEG Support
-----------
QuickTime 2.0 creates an infrastructure for development and
delivery of interactive television applications through MPEG
support and network enhancements. Now, with its new device
protocols, QuickTime can address distributed networks and devices,
such as video servers, on the information superhighway.

QuickTime 2.0 also supports MPEG*, widely regarded as the
industry- standard method of delivering video into the home for
interactive television applications such as Video On Demand (VOD)
and home shopping. However, MPEG, by itself, allows only
playback. With QuickTime 2.0, users of MPEG-based devices will be
able to edit, search for, interact with - as well as play back -
video information.

Music For The Masses
-------------------
In addition, QuickTime 2.0's music capabilities will save disk
space for users, because QuickTime music tracks are much smaller
than digital audio. For example, Beethoven's 5th Symphony could
easily fill a 300MB hard disk if stored as CD-quality audio, but
when represented as a QuickTime music track it would fill just a
single 800K floppy disk.

"The technical advances we've made with this release of QuickTime
will have a profound impact on the multimedia industry," commented
Tom Ryan, manager of Media Products at Apple. "QuickTime's faster,
full-screen video with MPEG support, will raise the video quality
standards for multimedia developers, while its new music
capabilities lower the barrier to entry for multimedia customers
who do not want to learn the technical nuances of MIDI."

System Requirements
------------------
QuickTime 2.0 will run on any color-capable (68020 or later)
Macintosh computer running System 7 or 6.0.7 with at least 2 MB of
memory.

Availability
-----------
QuickTime 2.0 is expected to be available on the Macintosh in the
middle of 1994, with developer seeding planned to begin in March.
As with previous versions, QuickTime 2.0 is designed to permit
cross- platform compatibility between platforms which support it.

Folks,

If you use RamDoubler, be sure to get the RamDoubler updater. I
just received it from sumex via /info-mac/cfg/ram-doubler-101-updt.hqx and
it behaves remarkably better.
I use QuickTime often on my LCIII and RamDoubler had a fit with
QuickTime movies that had audio. The audio, on the 1984 commercial would
get about a two second lead over the video. On the other hand, the
RamDoubler's manual cautions using it for such processor-intensive
programs.
The updater has killed the problem with QuickTime, at least for
me. In fact, I can't tell any noticeable difference between my LCIII's
behavior with or without RamDoubler 101. I could with the first release,
the LCIII's "snap" was gone. Now it is back.
Set up here is a LCIII with a Quantum 240LPS internal hard drive,
lots 'n lots of extensions/CDEVs, and twelve megs of real ram doubled to
twenty four. These folks have a real winner, now.
BUY this product, folks. This is a great addition to the system.

It sounds like I am the only one but I'm having trouble with this combo. The
most specific thing I've been able to pin down is a slowdown in upload and
download speed. This is hard to account for but I have verified it...

Just a yesterday, I was trying to download big file and it was taking forever
in spite of the fact that there wasnUt much activity on our system. So, in
frustration, I aborted the download & rebooted my system without RAM Doubler.
After reconnecting to the same modem on UltraLink, I resumed my download and
ZOOOMMM --> it clicked along like it should at 14.4. I don't know if RAM
Doubler is messing with the serial port or if FirstClass handles memory in
such a way that RAM Doubler slows it down (more likely the latter).

If anyone else has experienced similar slow downs, please let me know as I
plan on getting in touch with SoftArc and/or Connectix to see if there might
be a fix b/c most of my other apps seem to be running about their normal
speed w/RAM Doubler installed.

To send mail to someone on AOL use the format "[email protected]" where "name" is
the individual's screen name. For example, my address on AOL, via Internet,
is [email protected]

CompuServe's Internet address is "compuserve.com". However, you can
abbreviate this as "cis".

CompuServe addresses normally consist of five numbers, followed by a comma,
then another three or four numbers. However, when sending mail to
Compuserve, you need to change the comma to a period. For example, to send
mail to CompuServe ID 12345,678 you would address the mail to:
12345.678@cis or [email protected]

Hope this info helps.

My wife is using TaxCut and attempting to upload tax returns directly to
the Universal Tax Systems (UTS) BBS. I have been working with Robert at
UTS, and he has attempted to be very helpful, but we are both out of ideas
as to how to solve my access problem. I am using a LineLink 144e modem,
which I have had for a few months now, and have found it to work flawlessly
to connect to many different kinds of services, and to send and receive FAX
messages. To eliminate the LineLink as a variable, I also hooked up an old
Hayes-compatible 1200-baud modem, and get the same error while trying to
upload the file.

The error we get is this: The modem dials successfully, the window on the
Mac screen says that it is connecting, then in smaller print in the window,
it says that the login is successful, then says that the file is
transferring - precisely at which point a window pops up on the screen and
says that the file could not be transferred (no reason is given), and the
modem hangs up. There is much more detail I could give in terms of what we
have tried, and the results we have gotten by trying various init. strings,
but I won't burden this message with those details.

My real question is this: Have any of you successfully filed tax returns
directly to UTS using the TaxCut software and a LineLink 144e modem? If
so, please E-mail me a note telling me what you have used for an init.
string, and if possible the default modem setups stored in your modem (as
displayed by the AT&V command).
