Subject: [*] 2Way Talker 2.2 upgrade for PowerMacs; an AplpeTalk comm program
2 Way Computing Inc.'s voice communication software for Macintosh
computers, called 2Way Talker, is now compatible with Apple's line of
PowerMacs computers. 2Way Talker 2.2 enables two Macintosh users connected
over a network such as AppleTalk or EtherTalk, to have hands free,
full-duplex, real-time, voice communication using the built-in speakers and
microphone. Talker runs in the background and performs much like a speaker
phone, allowing people to work in other applications while having
hands-free, voice communication simultaneously.

Subject: [*] 5PM Pro; a development environment
5PM pro is a powerful client application and GUI front-end development
environment suitable for legacy system re-engineering and new client/server
development projects. 5PM Pro has been designed for in-house developers,
systems integrators and commercial developers who want to improve the
usability and functionality of their legacy systems by adding a graphical
user interface, and for those who want rapid user interface development for
their distributed applications.
5PM Pro effectively bridges the gap between legacy systems and new
client/server applications, allowing an evolutionary approach to systems
modernization rather than a revolutionary one. 5PM Pro can be used alone
or in conjunction with other products, like database back-ends or client
middleware products, to create state-of-the-art user interfaces.
Developers can create windows and dialog boxes, supporting such things as
scrolling lists, 'drag-able' items, radio button clusters and
'auto-hiliting' buttons -- all without having to write code. 5PM Pro
simplifies the job of the user interface development, allowing the
developer to concentrate on the logic and features of the application
itself.
Communications front-ends and scripts which have been developed with 5PM
Pro work with 5PM Term, About Software Corporation's terminal emulation
software. 5PM Term can run these projects just like standard session
documents, because 5PM Term contains the same 5PM scripting engine present
in 5PM Pro. This allows 5PM Pro developers to create projects which can be
deployed to end users, both Macintosh and Microsoft Windows!

Subject: [*] All Ages Bingo! A game for Young and Old
All Ages Bingo! is a multimedia rendition of traditional Bingo
which can be played and enjoyed by all ages. For adults and
older children, the program prints out randomly generated cards
four to a sheet of 8.5 x 11 paper. All Ages Bingo then uses the
Speech Manager to "call" the numbers in user selectable voices.
Traditional Bingo can also be played using on screen cards
against the Mac or another carbon based unit. For younger kids
All Ages Bingo! has a special Shapes Bingo mode in which
children match shapes and colors on a smaller bingo card. When
a child wins, the computer puts on a sound and music light show
and awards the winner with an animation which can be played back
at any time durring the game. Up to four animation prizes can be
accumulated. Shareware with valuable bonus for sending in the
sharewre fee. Jim Allison 8/15/94

Subject: [*] Audiodeck 2.0.3 (FAT) -- Audio CD player for the Macintosh
[Fixed a fatal bug that would crash my 660av when I put the window near the

of the current screen. Hear me, never "trust" an unknown piece of code you
are given or find somewhere, even if it is supposed to be bug-free. -- David]
A U D I O D E C K 2 . 0 . 3
What is it?
Audiodeck is an audio CD remote player for Apple CD-ROM drives. Audiodeck
also works with non-Apple drives which are 100% compatible with Apple's
drivers. System 7 and Color QuickDraw are required for Audiodeck to run.
Why should you use it?
This is a good question since a very nice looking AppleCD Audio Player is
included with CD-ROM Setup 5.0 and later, possibly already installed on
your Macintosh. On the surface, Audiodeck 2.0.3 may bear a passing
resemblance to AAP with its 3-D buttons and sleek overall design. However,
a great deal of subtle and not-so-subtle features are exclusive to
Audiodeck:
o can automatically play inserted CD's,
o can force internal CD input and enable playthrough,
o plays adjacent tracks in shuffle and program mode without skipping a beat,
o disable or enable individual tracks in shuffle mode,
o uses the existing disc and track titles of CD Remote Programs,
o but also extends the disc information database with new categories,
o and individual, custom disc settings (i.e.. volume),
o gratuitous Balloon Help for just about everything; plus much, much more.
Do I need to upgrade?
Fixes all known bugs, even the dreaded 24-bit mode bug. If you had problems
with previous version or even if you had not, please upgrade to this
revision. Also, if you have a Power Macintosh, Audiodeck runs native.
But remember, always "Read The Fabulous Manual" before using a software.
Enjoy,

CodeWarrior Colorfix Patch 1.0
Created by Chris K. Thomas
The CodeWarrior development enviroment has a few aesthetic defects
(one is a bug). These have been present since DR/1, but have yet to
be fixed. The enviroment engineers have better things to do, of
course, so I fixed the problems myself.
The defects in question:
Metrowerks' PopUp MDEF does not display correctly if one has custom
menu colors (through Greg's Buttons or a handmade 'mctb' or whatever).
+ The standard MDEF is replaced with one I wrote.
Projector & Locked-disk indicators were only in B&W.
+ These are replaced with appropriate color versions.
CodeWarrior Colorfix Patch been tested and developed with 68k C/C++
1.1 only, but should work with all other versions of the enviroment.
The MDEF is essentially untested, although I have been using it during
development of itself. The Patch should only be applied to a copy
of the CodeWarrior enviroment(s).

Subject: [*] FTPShare; an FTP server implementation
FTPShare is a set of communications applications which allows a Macintosh
computer to be used as an FTP file server. It can be connected to by any
computer with an FTP client application over a TCP/IP network. It provides
a user access scheme similar to that of Apple's File Sharing in Sytem 7.x
and allows:
* Files to be transferred between a Macintosh and FTP clients
* Up to 20 users to connect at the same time
* An access profile to be given to each user
* Guest users to connect to the file server
* Speeds significantly faster than Shareware FTP servers
FTP Share works in the background of the Macintosh leaving it free to be
used as usual. It also provides a monitor which allows you to see who is
connected to the file server and which folders are being accessed.

Subject: [*] plug-in-manager-10; for applciations that use plug-ins
If you feel like you're drowning in all "plug-in"-type extensions for
your applications, this is what you need! Plug-In Manager will handle
sets of plug-ins and enable/disable them with a single click. It can
also launch your applications from inside the main window.
This is version 1.0 and replaces any earlier beta versions. I've rewritten
the launching part so that PIM now quits _completely_ before starting
another application, thus making it possible to reuse the memory that PIM
occupied.
As we now don't have to worry about memory requirements in the same way
as before I've decided to ship PIM as a fat binary (i.e. with native
PowerPC code included). Unfortunately some vital parts of the system are
still emulated (e.g. List Manager and Dialog Manager) so the speedup isn't
breathtaking.
Plug-In Manager is shareware $10 and requires System 7 or later. It should
work on anything from 68000 and up. If you have any problems on 68000 Macs
(Plus, Classic and PB100) in particular I'd be glad to hear about it.
If you have any comments or suggestions, I'd be glad to hear them!

[uploaded to backmod]
Scheme In One Defun, v. 3.0, by George Carrette, [email protected]
SIOD is a small (only 60K) interpreter for the Scheme programming
language with support for:
- lists, numbers, symbols, strings, arrays.
- string and numeric arrays compatible with C types long*,char*,double*.
- user-defined datatypes, new types added on fly, with hooks to
reading, evaluation, printing, equal, hashing,
- c-style I/O including fopen, fclose, fseek, ftell, fread, fwrite.
- fast/binary data-structure printing and reading.
- hash tables.
- C-programmer friendly programming for adding functionality.
Lisp arguments are passed as C arguments. No funky stacks
or stack pointers to keep track of. No storage management hassles.
Even though this is small, the implementation supports some nice
features such as arrays, hash tables, and fast/binary data saving and
restoring. Also included in this release are interfaces to the
commercial relational databases DIGITAL RDB and Oracle. Full sources
(in C) are included, and will also compile on VMS, Windows NT, Unix,
and OS/2. A minimalist command-line interface is provided.

Subject: (Q) PowerMac 7100 internal disk drive getting dirty?
Greetings!
I've noticed the internal disk drive of the PowerMac 7100/66 more closely
last night. To insert a disk, I have to stick it in a good half inch,
beyond the rounded indent guide. Plus, the opening is rather wide. This
leads me to think that it's going to get dirty quickly with dust floating
in and all. Is there a clever cover available that hangs down over the disk
drive opening?
We do have dogs and I think there should be some way to keep the dog hair
from floating in there when not in use. Maybe I can just use Post-it Notes?
Any ideas welcome.
Cheers!

Subject: Alternative PPP connection to Internet
Hi Everyone:
Wanted to let everyone know, who hasn't already seen the ad. campaign, that
there is a relatively inexpensive PPP connection to the net offered by
Performance Systems International (PSI). For the next three months (up to Dec
31, 1994 I believe), you can purchase a new "fat" version of TCP/Connect II
(required) with 3 months of free unlimited usage for $200.00. The extended
(fat) version of TCP/Connect II by Intercon Systems normally sells, on the
street, for $349.00. After the three months, the cost is $29.00 per month
for 29 hours of usage and $2.00 per hour after that. I've been doing a lot
of shopping for a SLIP/PPP alternative and this is the best deal that I could
find.
If you are interested you can call or e-mail them. BTW the support staff are
very helpful.

Subject: Connetix, are you there?
I was wondering if anyone, _anywhere_ has had or heard anything
from Connetix about RAM Doubler.
I've never seen any messages in the digest (just description-less
postings of updates) and I haven't had anything in the mail in the way of
update information or even an acknowledgement that they received my
registration card.
For instance... has anyone had anything from Connetix about
RAMDoubler 1.5 yet? From TidBITS #239:
"RAM Doubler 1.5 (updated to support Power
Macintosh and to improve performance on all Macs)"
...
"RAM Doubler 1.5 began shipping at Macworld." [MHA]
I know they put a lot of work into their software, and the low
price of RAM Doubler is very good. However, I think the price more than
covers the occasional update note in the mail, or perhaps a message in the
Info-Mac digest every so often which informs users of the current version
bug fixes and future update plans.
I wonder what percentage of RAM Doubler users out there are still
on version 1.0 because they don't have access to the Internet!

Subject: External hard drive problem
After many years of faithful service, I've finally damaged my
external drive (Frog 100MB). You know when you jolt the power cord
out by mistake whilst it's in the middle of saving a file, and then
you jam the cord back in, without powering down, without thinking...
The story is; no drive on the desktop (it's NOT the startup
drive
), Norton sees it, can retrieve files, and says 'The driver
is damaged; I'll do my best but if it hangs you'll have to reinstall'
then drops into MacsBug. The problem is, the original driver installer
doesn't see the disk, so can't re-install the driver, or even
reformat. Any suggestions? Although I'd LIKE to save the data on the
disk, as it would save me a little time, it would even be nice just
to be able to reformat it, as I have backups/originals of all the
important stuff (amazing but true).
Would a third party driver like Silver-lining do the job? The problem
is I don't want to buy one if it won't do the job, but I won't know
it can do the job 'til I buy one... Is there any sale or return
software?
The Norton is version 2.0. (And I have never yet received
any upgrade notice from any company I've ever bought software from.
But that's another grumble...-see TidBits passim)
[Apple Disk Tools etc. all fail to see the disk.]

To this Toby Braun replies in #108:

>I have found a few exeptions to
>this that I can't explain, but they seem to be rare and usually have to do

Well, I checked: All three machines under my control (One PB 180 and 2

on having differerent grid spacings. The PB agrees with one of the two

Jonathan,
What? You didn't give it the secret handshake? Didn't anyone tell you about
that at Mac Guru University?
Actually, it's a super-secret (well, not really) resistor that has to be
clipped. If you pull out the logic board, look for white box with lines around
two resistor spaces, one of which should have a resistor in it; above the box
are the words "RAM size." Clip the resistor, whether it's on R8 or R9. Go
ahead,
it won't hurt. Honest. With 4 MB installed, you want no resistor on either

Subject: MacTCP self configuring program? (A)
>If the MacTCP is using ethernet connections
>is there a program that will configure the
>damned ip addresses etc itself, automatically?
There are three choices in the MacTCP dialog box for configuring an
address; Manually, Server, Dynamically.
Dynamically is evil, never use that. It randomly picks an address that
doesn't seem to be in use. Who knows what it will pick and what problems it
will cause.
Manually is where you get the address from the net god and enter it into
the Mac. Obviously this is something you said you want to avoid.
Server is where MacTCP communicates to a gateway and gets it's address
assigned by the gateway. This is probably what you want. You will need an
IP Gateway on your network such as a Shiva FastPath or the soon to ship
Apple IP Gateway. In the connection part of MacTCP, you select the zone
where the gateway resides. MacTCP sends AppleTalk packets with IP packets
inside them to the gateway. The gateway provides an IP address to the Mac
and also converts the encapsulated packet into a normal IP packet.
This kind of gateway has lots of names; DDP/IP gateway, MacIP gateway, KIP
forwarding, etc.
Cheers,
Kee Nethery

I installed Norton Utilities 3.0 yesterday and checked out an 88-meg
Syquest drive on which I have a zillion files (mostly stuff downloaded
from the Archives). NU churned away for four or five hours and found
several errors including directory editors, that it successfully fixed.
But then it reported a long list of files which were damaged because
they shared space on the disk and should be deleted and replaced.
On a hunch I ran NU a second time. This time it took about five
minutes and reported no problems. Evidently my bad directory was
misinforming NU about the status of the files. This shows that an
old rule of thumb is still valid: when you have problems, run NU
at least twice.
Generally, I like it a lot. My wife, however, pointed out that the

Subject: Problem with Word files
We have been having a problem with some Word files here. The problem is
that when some of these files are opened, Microsoft word will pop up an

With System 7.1, Word will quit with an error of type 1.
I was able to use CP file fix to extract the text from all of the files

time. There are about 75 of them all at about 20k each. I do have them

Is there any utility that I can use to fix these files? I've tried Norton

Ed, I'm not exactly sure what you mean in the above statement, but using
the fileserver volume for storage of users' AtEase files does have some
advantages: Our shared server volume always mounts automatically at each
client station; and by keeping all document/data files there, a given user
can log on at any station and still have her/his personal files available.
As to the "server controlling all the mac's program locations," if all
stations are updated with the application setups of a master station (not
the server), it *seems* that AtEase first looks for a given program on its
station's local volume, and then runs it from there (rather than over the
network), if it is present. If a particular application was set up from a
non-networked CD, the local station will prompt for "disk" insertion (if
it is not already present in its drive).
However, we *do* inhibit most users' ability to "Go to Finder," use the
Chooser (and most other Apple Menu items), and to Save and access items
anywhere else. Otherwise, havoc with the shared volume would almost
certainly ensue.
Although AtEase for Work Groups has some good features, it still has some
serious flaws (IMO). A few examples:
1. A bug (feature?) intermittently inhibits the "Force User to Change
Password on First Log-on" provision. Our global, temporary "xxxxxx"
remains in effect (apparently) forever.
2. If no temporary password is entered at the time a user's record is
created, no password is ever asked for (notwithstanding the setup
specified in 1, above).
3. File sharing cannot be active on *any* of the client stations running
AtEase. A system administrator's ability to work remotely with the hard
drive contents of client stations has obvious advantages.
4. Without an inelegant work-around, AtEase cannot run on the server that
is used to store the AtEase files. In our case, we need the same security
at the server as we do anywhere else.
We are hoping that Apple will continue to support and upgrade this
product, but nobody at SOS APPL seems willing to state unequivocally that
they *are* going to do it. Like you, we have made a significant
investment in time and scarce school funds, and so far it is not an
especially good one. We hope that Apple will proceed to make it
otherwise.
For more information on configuring AtEase, call SOS APPL and ask for the
specialized AtEase support group. They seem to know the program fairly
well.

[Fixed a fatal bug that would crash my 660av when I put the window near the

FTPShare is a set of communications applications which allows a Macintosh

computer with an FTP client application over a TCP/IP network. It provides
a user access scheme similar to that of Apple's File Sharing in Sytem 7.x
and allows:
* Files to be transferred between a Macintosh and FTP clients
* Up to 20 users to connect at the same time
* An access profile to be given to each user
* Guest users to connect to the file server
* Speeds significantly faster than Shareware FTP servers

Microtek ScanMaker IIG Grayscal Flatbed Scanner
ScanMaker IIG scans at an interpolated resolutions up to 1,200 x 1,200 dpi

Price: $377

Is this scanner good enough?

Subject: Connetix, are you there?
I was wondering if anyone, _anywhere_ has had or heard anything
from Connetix about RAM Doubler.
I've never seen any messages in the digest (just description-less
postings of updates) and I haven't had anything in the mail in the way of
update information or even an acknowledgement that they received my

The story is; no drive on the desktop (it's NOT the startup

then drops into MacsBug.
[Apple Disk Tools etc. all fail to see the disk.]

>have noticed that essentially identical machines (like 2 Mac II fx-s), all
>running essentially identical System 7.1 software, exhibit two quite
>different sets of spacings in the Small-Icon view, especially vertically.
>Any explanations? And how does one achieve consistent spacings from
>machine? Moving the Finder preferences file from one machine to the other
>has changed nothing!
To this Toby Braun replies in #108:
>The Finder grid used to be set in the LAYO (?) resource under System 6. Now
>the grid size is a factor based on the font and font size chosen in the Views
>control panel. The only way to make different machines share the same grid is
>to make sure both Macs are using the same font/size Finder Views settings.
>However, if you are on a network and are trying to mix views between System 6
>& 7 Finders -- good luck! I haven't yet found a good way to keep the views
>tidy!
I also got a similar reply from Brian Renken :
>The system determines
>the icon spacing based on the attributes of the current font (the one defined
>in
>the Views control panel. If you set all your machines to the same font and
>font
>size, they *should* then use identical spacing.
But at this point, Brian injects a word of caution:
>I have found a few exeptions to
>this that I can't explain, but they seem to be rare and usually have to do
with
>non-standard (ie. non-apple) fonts.
Well, I checked: All three machines under my control (One PB 180 and 2
fx-s) use 9-point Geneva in the View control panel, yet the 2 fx's insist
on having differerent grid spacings. The PB agrees with one of the two
fx-s. Changing the Geneva font size will change the spacings, as suggested,
but restoring them will restore the inexplicable difference.
Next theory, please!

QuickTime 2.0 has been on release to Apple registered developers for a
number of weeks. Yes it works, its quick and a big improvement. Apprantly
it will be bundled with Sys 7.5 (which is also great in Beta version). If
you want to see these things then find a developer and commission him to
develop a little something that uses them - that way he may be able to show
them to you without breaking his non-disclosure agreement...

If I am directing these questions at the wrong party, would you please

Jonathan,
Honest. With 4 MB installed, you want no resistor on either
position.

There is a resistor on the Mac Plus motherboard that needs to

Cheers,
Kee Nethery

Subject: Odd Norton 3.0 behavior
My wife, however, pointed out that the
animated "doctors" in the menus are all men.

Subject: Problem with Word files
We have been having a problem with some Word files here. The problem is
that when some of these files are opened, Microsoft word will pop up an
error message. With System 7.01, the machine will bomb with a bus error.
With System 7.1, Word will quit with an error of type 1.
I was able to use CP file fix to extract the text from all of the files
that I've tried, but putting these files back in order will take too much
time. There are about 75 of them all at about 20k each. I do have them
backed up, but the back ups are a couple of weeks old (and that's too old).
Is there any utility that I can use to fix these files? I've tried Norton
Utilities and that can't find anything wrong with the files. I'm quickly
running out of options. Could anybody suggest anything?

I had a trial run with America On Line, and they had a way to shut
off the modem speaker by changing the modem configuration string from a
mess of letters and numbers to "M0." (Silence is golden!) I poked around
my Kermit and Eudora programs and prefs--using ResEdit--but couldn't find
anything that looked very familiar, so I didn't do anything. (I'm yer

Does anyone know of a way to change a string or what ever to shut

I've got 1.0.1 on a disk somewhere. I updated to 1.0.2 because the

They seem to know the program fairly
well.
Best regards,
