Subject: [*] Audiodeck 2.0.1 -- Audio CD player for the Macintosh. [repost]

[A repost to include ommitted files. --isl]

A U D I O D E C K 2 . 0 . 1

What is it?

Audiodeck is an audio CD remote player for Apple CD-ROM drives.
Audiodeck also works with non-Apple drives which are 100% compatible
with Apple's drivers. System 7 and Color QuickDraw are required for
Audiodeck to run.

Why should you use it?

This is a good question since a very nice looking AppleCD Audio Player
is included with CD-ROM Setup 5.0 and later, possibly already
installed on your Macintosh. On the surface, Audiodeck 2.0.1 may bear
a passing resemblance to AAP with its 3-D buttons and sleek overall
design. However, a great deal of subtle and not-so-subtle features
are exclusive to Audiodeck:

o can automatically play inserted CD's,
o can force internal CD input and enable playthrough,
o plays adjacent tracks in shuffle and program mode without skipping a beat,
o disable or enable individual tracks in shuffle mode,
o uses the existing disc and track titles of CD Remote Programs,
o but also extends the disc information database with new categories,
o and individual, custom disc settings (i.e.. volume),
o gratuitous Balloon Help for just about everything; plus much, much more.

But remember, always "Read The Fabulous Manual" before using a software.

Enjoy,
...David

Subject: [*] BatteryMinder 2.0b3; a PowerBook battery utility

This beta release fixes a bug concerning the battery icon on PB 180c (and
possibly others).

There was also a problem with the spindown feature crashing on PB 1xx
machines. Sorry about this but I *was* checking for the feature and it
still crashed, even if it was available, so I just disabled it on all
pre-Duo machines.

Feature list of BatteryMinder 2.0:
- Exclusive Screen Controls window for adjusting backlight brightness and
contrast
- Backlight toggle between preset values depending on charger status
- Force Appletalk to load at startup, so that it is always available
- Make quiet the startup sound
- Toggle Appletalk, sound and modem on and off with button control
- Monitors battery voltage (on all PowerBooks) and watts (on Duo or later)
- Predict battery life with count up and count down timers
- User selectable status information conveniently displayed in menu
- Change screen color depth via BatteryMinder menu
- Open PowerBook Control Panel from menu or an option-click in
BatteryMinder window
- Open Sharing Setup Control Panel from menu or a control-click in
BatteryMinder window
- Spin down hard drive with a command-click to BatteryMinder's window (on
Duo or later)
- Put your PowerBook to sleep with a double-click in BatteryMinder window

>>> Group 3 - Church I would like to share a neat way to get rid of the "I-like-to-drag-and-drop-

(His icon has been archived as /info-mac/gui/grf/blank-icon.hqx)

I've been doing that for some time, but for drag 'n drop applications only.
Sometimes however you'd like to double-click applications as well, which can
sometimes be tedious when you've only got its name on your desktop.

This file contains the icon I use in those situations, and an example of how
you can use both a blank icon as well as a button Icon to make your screen
neater and more functional.

A screen-dump of the bottom of my screen is included. I wonder who'll be able
to guess which abbreviation belongs to what :-)

This is the lastest release of CatFinder, version 1.35.

CatFinder is a powerful disk management tool that catalogs your
disks and provides an intuitive Finder-like interface for browsing
the catalogs. Floppies, hard disks, CD ROMs, any disk can be
cataloged with CatFinder. Once a disk is cataloged you can
quickly browse the disks contents without having the disk mounted.
CatFinder also offers powerful search and report features to

print diskette labels.

MacTCP Watcher v1.1.1 displays the internal data of MacTCP. It shows
this Mac's IP, DNS name, and all the internal information that MacTCP
provides (much of which I don't understand, so please don't ask me
what it means!). It will also list all the currently open TCP connections,
and the information on each of them. As well, it allows you to test
MacTCP and your network, using the ICMP Ping protocol, the UDP & TCP
Echo protocols (you'll need a machine that supports the echo protocol,
most unix machines do, and I've implemented them in MacTCP Watcher,
so you can run the program on two Macs and test the network between
them as well as the MacTCP configuration on each of them), and it
tests out the DNS by looking up the name of a given IP or IP of a given
name. It should be useful to people having MacTCP configuration troubles,
network or Domain Name System problems, or the cronically curious.

MacTCP Watcher is free, and comes with a free copy of Eric Behr's
MacTCP Info document (thanks Eric!), so if you have MacTCP problems,
check it out.

Subject: [*] MaxRAM 1.0.4A; a RAM Doubler utility

What's New in MaxRAM 1.0.4A (Released August 12, 1994)

- Compatible with Macintosh II, IIx, IIcx, and SE/30. If you don't have
one of those Macintoshes, there is no advantage to upgrading from MaxRAM
1.0.4. Please de-install any previous version of MaxRAM before installing
MaxRAM 1.0.4A.
- Previously registered users of versions 1.0, 1.0.2, and 1.0.4 can
consider this a free update. There is a $5 shareware fee for all other users.

What's New in MaxRAM 1.0.4 (Released August 5, 1994)

- Compatibility with versions 1.0.3 and 1.0.4 of RAM Doubler!!
- MaxRAM allows user to try out the indicator feature on all Macintoshes.

General Information

MaxRAM works in conjunction with RAM Doubler, allowing you to:

- Triple, quadruple, quintuple, or have SIX times as much memory when
using RAM Doubler from Connectix Corporation. Normally, RAM Doubler will
double your RAM, but with the help of MaxRAM, you can have SIX times the
installed memory. That's right - SIX. For example, if you have 8 MB of
real RAM in your Macintosh, MaxRAM will give you 48 MB of RAM. (You can
also choose a lower amount, if you desire.)
- Display an indicator in the menu bar that will flash when RAM Doubler
is used.

To use MaxRAM, simply double click on it, select the desired amount of
RAM (and if you want the indicator on), and click Save. From now on,
you'll have much more RAM than before!!

Subject: [*] Newton Program T-Cube submission

T-Cube v1.0
August 12, 1994

Designed by: Dan Venolia ([email protected]) & Forrest Neiberg
Newton Port: Les Vogel

T-Cube is a new way of entering characters and text on Newton. It
complements handwriting recognition and the soft keyboard. Characters
correspond to "flick" gestures made into the T-Cube window.

After you have installed T-Cube, it is accessed by tapping its button in
the Note Pad status bar. T-Cube shows nine buttons arranged like a wheel.
Pressing and holding the pen down in any of the button shows a different
"pie menu" containing eight characters. You can "type" a character by
moving the pen in one of the eight directions, then lifting it.

This sounds like a tedious way to type, but as you start to memorize common
characters, such as space and "e", you can make the gesture directly,
without invoking the pie menu. Using the menu, an "e" is made by pressing
in the "north" button and dragging to the north-east. As a gesture, this
is a simple flick that starts in the north button and proceeds to the
north-east. You should have the most common characters memorized after
only an hour of use.

More information on the design of T-Cube can be found in:

Venolia, D. and Neiberg, F. "T-Cube: A Fast, Self-Disclosing Pen-Based
Alphabet," in Proceedings of CHI '94 (Boston, April 24-28, 1994), ACM
Press, pp. 265-270.

The Newton T-Cube package may be distributed freely, provided that this
text accompanies it. T-Cube may not be distributed for profit without
prior written consent.

I have been asked by the author's agent to upload this file to Info-Mac.
Please address any questions about this program to:

[email protected]

The following is an excerpt from the file's read me doc:

* So, what exactly does "PetitIcon" do?

It allows you to "make an alias" of the selected file, copy its 16x16
dot small icon from the original file, and paste it anywhere within the
alias' 32x32 dot icon frame at your descretion.

When a file without a small icon (for example, files that already have
a customized icon, etc.) is selected, "PetitIcon" automatically shrinks a
32x32 dot large icon into the small icon space. In this case, "PetitIcon"
can work with anti-aliasing mode on or off.

If you do not need a "PetitIconed" mini icon any longer, you can
delete it in a "Get Info=8A" dialogue. Whatever was in the Get Info box of
the file originally will be back in place.

Subject: [*] VisualEzC (Demo); a development environment

Release of the Visual EzC application development environment.

Silicon Island Software announces the release of a new and powerful
application development environment, Visual EzC.

EzC has a graphical Layout editor, a Menu editor, a database structure
editor, a C-like programming language, and a powerful relational database
engine.

The EzC programming language is syntactically similar to C. It is easier
to learn since it does not explicitly contain the more obfuscated parts
of C such as pointer arithmetic.

EzC is a fully object-oriented language. It has objects, inheritance,
classes and polymorphism. Especially important are the Library objects
that extend the functionality of EzC.

The programmer can create standalone interpreted programs with the
standard development system, and using the optional EzC pre-compiler
the EzC code can be translated into normal C for compilation with for
instance MPW. A grossly increased performance of the application usually
follows.

The programmer can create almost any application with EzC. An added
advantage is that s/he does not need to know much about Macintosh
programming to be able to use EzC with proficiency.

EzC is especially suitable for individual programmers and small firms
that want to develop useful applications but do not have the time and
resources to invest in learning a high level language and the peculiarities
of Macintosh Programming.

The Visual EzC demo package contains the development system and two sets
of examples. The first set is a collection of 8 small examples with all
the source code and the layouts included. The other example is a compiled
version of a database application called Starline.

With the demo version of the EzC development system, you can do everything
you can do in the full version of the program except saving your work.
There is also no Runtime module included with the demo version.

>chip. Is it because the 68LC040 is in the new LC's and Performas? If so,
>then what is the real difference (performance wise)?

The difference between the regular 040 and the LC040 is the
Floating Point Unit (FPU), also known as the "math coprocessor."
The regular 040 has this coprocessor and is therefore able to
perform floating-point (decimal) calculations very quickly
by routing these calculations to the coprocessor, leaving the
main processor free to perform other tasks. The LC040
(Centris 610, for example) has the FPU disabled. Therefore,
all the floating-point calculations which would be done quickly
by the coprocessor have to be done by the main processor itself.
There is no way to add a coprocessor to an LC040 Macintosh.
030 Macs without an FPU could emulate ("fake") one with software.
However, this cannot be done on an LC040 stable-ly.

The reason the LC040 is inside the new LC's and Performas
is because Apple figures that most LC and Peforma users
are home-type users whose computing needs to not require
having very fast floating-point computation. Word processing,
data base, telecommunications, etc do not use much decimal
mathematics to run, so aren't helped significantly by a coprocessor.
Engineers, scientists and graphic artists (and students aiming
in those directions), however, DO need the ability to do intensive
math calculations quickly.

I hope this answers your question. Email me if you wish.

[A] Smaller Desktop Icons
I've been reading several posts concerning desktop icons and the desire to save
valuble space on the screen. I want to share my method. Instead of putting
your drag&drop apps on the desktop, put them in a folder and keep the folder
open at the bottom of the screen. I have a "palette" folder that is two icons
high and seven icons wide. Using this method you could very easily use small
icons. You can also close the palette when you don't need it. Just keep the
palette's icon on the real desktop at the bottom so you can re-open it easily.
This also works well if you have a multi-resolution monitor and you switch
resolutions frequently.
Hope this helps....

One potential problem with the approach above is this: you may find it
difficult to click or double-click a 'blanked' file or folder's name, due
to the name-editting feature of the Finder that insists on hilighting its
name upon clicking. To avoid that, open the get info for the blanked item
and lock it. That will not work with folders, though, but you can make an
alias of them, paste a blank icon on the aliases, and finally lock them.

One more thing: I have 2 rows of such beasts on the bottom edge of my
monitor, closely packed. To accomplish that, I make sure to have the option
for 'always snap to grid' in the Views control panel turned OFF while I
place the icons. When I'm done, I turn the option back on (you don't need
to do this, of course, if you don't care for it). However, here's one big
thing to watch for and be careful about in any case: DON'T CHOOSE 'CLEAN UP
DESKTOP' FROM THE SPECIAL MENU IN THE FINDER, or you'll lose your set up.

The scriptable version of the Finder is version 7.5. I will be released
later on this month. It is not free for most users, Apple have set up many
different upgrade policies, one of which may apply to you. You should
either call Apple directly or speak to your local dealer.

Apple Script will be included in this new version of the System. So you
will not have to go any buy it yourself. Normally you will have to purchase
this from APDA or your local dealer.

I hope this answer your questions.

Subject: AtEase for Workgroups Question

We are running AtEase for Workgroups 2.0x on Performa 636's and IISI's in
our campus network. We have two fileservers (appleshare) that each mac
will connect to.

We setup each computer with a username on the fileserver and login each
mac to the fileservers with the "Save my Name and Password" option.

When the macs boot without AtEase, they auto login perfectly. On the other
hand, if we run the Macs with AtEase, they don't autologin to the fileservers
until you click a program that needs them.

What I tried was running a very short hypercard 2.0 app that displays a one
line message and quits to tell the computer to access the fileserver once on
startup. This program does not automatically login to the server, it asks
the user for a username and password (They are already type in) and the user
only has to press return to continue as normal.

Also, Apple has said that you NEED to set the atEase Preferences to save
on a fileserver volume (which is possible) but we don't want to rely on a
server controling all the macs program locations!

These are student lab computer systems and we have time and money spent on
AtEase for workgroups. Does anyone have any suggestions, comments, first
hand experience (bad or good) with AtEase and appleshare fileservers.

Subject: Finder bugs

Has anyone else noticed the following bugs in the Finder? I have System 7.1
with HSU 3.0, and yet some of these bugs have been around ever since the
release of System 7:

o Say you drag files to another disk. It says "The files cannot be copied
unless the wastebasket is emptied. Do you wish to empty the wastebasket?"
You say "OK", but the files in the wastebasket are locked, so they can't be
trashed. However, the Finder still starts copying the files, only to get
half way and stop, saying "the disk is full". Whoops.

o If you option-drag files to a folder (to copy them), and some of the
items in the target folder have the same names, it asks you whether you
wish to replace them with the ones you're "moving" rather than the ones
you're "copying". This one still catches me out: I don't know whether I
held down the option key or not.

o The white space for the name of an icon on the desktop often doesn't
extend the correct distance past the left edge of the name: at least, not
until you select the icon. Small, cosmetic error, but still annoying. :-)

o Even now I still get the new "disk free" space in the window header
overwriting the old number.

o The System is supposed to allocate as much memory as it needs, even if
INITs are loaded. It does this OK for the actual system heap, but it
doesn't adjust the Finder's memory correctly. After about 8 to 10 hours use
the Finder says "that command cannot be completed, because there is not
enough memory available. Closing desk accessories....". I'm sure my
extensions have something to do with this, but surely the Finder can ask
for more memory...

o The Finder doesn't ask for enough memory for its own windows when you
open an application which uses up "all" of the available memory: the Finder
usually calls you to say "There's not enough memory to keep the window
'hard disk' open." Great. I don't get this message that often, though: RAM
Doubler took care of that. :-)

Subject: font bargain???

I have been seeing an ad recently for 6000 typefaces for less than $100.
How do they do it? I got their brochure recently and found out.

First you take a bunch of public-domain and shareware fonts. You
then open them in a font manipulation program and extend them, and skew
them left and right. Presto, you have converted one font into four. So, for
example, mny typeface RedLetter (or maybe it was the earlier version called
Stalingrad) is now four fonts called unique28. But why stop there? Using a
font distortion program called Font-o-matic, one can alter them in weird ways.
Pesto, four variations, each in normal, extended, italic, and lefty.
Now one typeface, which is a bizarre typeface made up of hammers and sickles,
has been made into 20. Of course there will be both PostScript and TrueType
versions, so the result is 40. I thought I was good at getting a lot from
one font, but to convert one font that has VERY limited usefulness into 40
exceeds my reach. You can figure out how many original typefaces one needs
to start with at this rate.

The result is "the largest, most original collection of fonts available
anwhere."
And "These fonts are not shareware or garbage fonts...."

As for Font-o-matic, that is another story. Try ordering it and see what
happens. But I have
bitched enough today.

There are good fonts available at low prices (and I believe I have produced
some). There is
also stuff that is not worth its very low price. Shop carefully.

I AM SURE YOU ARE ALREADY AWARE OF ALDUS RELATIONSHIP WITH APPLE AND THE
LASERWRITER POSTSCRIPT LANGUAGE. APPLE BUILDS THE HARDWARE, ALDUS WROTE THE
LANGUAGE THAT DRIVES IT. BUT, APPLE WRITES GENERIC DRIVES FOR MANY OF IT'S
HARDWARE PRODUCTS TO BE SUPPORTED BY ALL APPLICATIONS. ALL EXCEPT ALDUS. YOU
SEE SINCE THEY WROTE THE LANGUAGE THEY PLAY TO A DIFFERENT DRUMMER.

ALL ALDUS PRODUCTS RUN UNDER GENERIC 'APPLE' LIKE PRINTER ROUTINES AS LONG AS
YOU DON'T ACCESS SPECIAL FEATURES OF THE PRINTER. TO GET THE FULL EFFECT OF
THESE PRINTERS YOUR PRINTER DRIVER MUST SUPPORT PPDs (POSTSCRIPT PRINTER
DRIVERS) DEVELOPED BY ALDUS. THESE ACCESSORIES ARE AVAILABLE THRU THE
PURCHASED APPLICATION (I.E., PAGEMAKER). EACH APPLICATION COMES WITH A SET OF
PPDs IN SUPPORT OF MANY DIFFERENT PRINTERS.

APPLE HAS A LASERWRITER DRIVE 8.0 THAT DIRECTLY SUPPORTS THESE PPDs. UNLIKE
THE OLD VERSIONS THAT WERE INDIRECTLY SUPPORTED BY THE ALDUS APPLICATION
INTERCEPTING INFORMATION BETWEEN THE PRINTER DRIVER AND THE APPLICATION.
UNFORTUNATLY, I HAVE NEVER TRIED THIS LW DRIVER 8.0, OTHER THAN WITH SYSTEM 7.1
AND UP.

BEFORE BATTLING ALDUS AND FURTHER, I RECOMEND NOT USING THE SYSTEM 6.08.
INSTALL APPLE's LW DRIVER 8.0 OR GREATER ON THE CENTRIS 650. THROUGH THE
CHOOSER, SELECT THE LW DRIVER 8.0 (DO NOT PLAY WITH THE SETUP). RESTART THE
PRINTER AND THE CENTRIS 650. THEN PRINT ANY FINDER WINDOW TO THE PRINTER. TRY
ALL THE OPTIONS. IT SHOULD WORK. IF IT DOESN'T THE PROBLEM IS WITH APPLE.

IF ALL THE OPTIONS WORK, THAN LAUNCH ALDUS's PAGEMAKER AND ANY SAMPLE FILE.
THROUGH THE CHOOSER, SELECT THE LW DRIVER 8.0. UNDER THE SETUP, YOU WILL BE
CURRENTLY USING THE 'GENERIC' SETUP SUPPLIED BY APPLE. SELECT YOUR PPD THROUGH
THAT BUTTON ICON AND LOCATE THE PPD IN THE IT'S FOLDER.

IF YOU DON'T HAVE A PPD FILE, CONTACT ALDUS.
IF YOUR PPD IS NOT COMPATIBLE WITH LW DRIVER 8.0, CONTACT ALDUS.

OTHERWISE, THE PRINTER SHOULD NOW WORK AND THE PROBLEM IS THE USE OF SYSTEM
6.08's DRIVER RE-INITIALIZING THE PRINTER EACH TIME 6.08 USES THE PRINTER.
WHICH IS A COMMON PROBLEM ON ANY SIZE NETWORK. YOUR SYSTEM ADM. SHOULD
CONFIGURE ALL SYSTEM AROUND A GIVEN PRINTER TO THE SAME COMPATIBLE PRINTER
DRIVER AND SYSTEM.

GOOD LUCK

PeeCee's use the RS-232 serial standard (designed when 300 baud was "high
speed") that doesn't support throughput faster than 19.6 kbps. Macs have
ALWAYS used an updated standard that supports up to 57.6 kbps. Hence, your
answer to your co-workers is "hey, I have a computer that was designed in
the 1980's--the PeeCee is wholly 1970's technology (well, we can quibble
about bus standards, but most PeeCee users don't have hardware or software
that exceeds the capability of the 1970's ISA bus).

No. IN THEORY the V.34 compression can deliver 115.2 kbps, but reality is
tha-Sys-Mac-Comm FAQ seems to indicate that provided I use a hardware

Actually, they simply are unaware that a Mac serial port is FAR more
sophisticated than the ancient (I believe RS-232 is a 1960's standard)
serial technology built into their PeeCees--but they did get them for a
very low price! ;-) Their serial ports won't do AppleTalk (which is much
faster than 57.6 kbps) either--if they won't to put together a
desktop-laptop-b&w printer-color printer network together at home (as I
have), they have to pay (a LOT) extra. I only had to buy four under $20
PhoneNet clone connectors.

If you are loking for something which will password protect your hard drive,
FolderBolt from Kent Marsh Ltd. is really good stuff. Other than
reformatting the hard drive, there is no way to gain access to hte hard
drive. Booting from a floppy does not give access to the hard drive, and all
things like that have been considered by the programmeers. The person at
Kent Marsh I have dealt with entirely is Nadene Crain. She can be reached at

Don't bother with "Security" applications, they just represent a challenge
and can cause more trouble than they are worth IMHO. A careful combination
of RevRdist, RRhelper and Tonto will probably achieve most of what you want.
My experience is that even a joker who discovered he could reformat the
hard disk of our Macs stopped trying when he realised that to completely
restore the machine I simply booted from a magic floppy (30seconds)
and came back after tea (5mins), typed in the workstation number and strolled
off.

If you have serious problems you will have to worry about interfence
with the hardware...

I *strongly* recommend FileGuard. It is an excellent piece of software from
ASD Software. It is available from MacWAREHOUSE for ~ $139.00.

It has won many awards from magazines including five (maybe four, I don't
remember exactly) mice from MacUser.

I use it to protect my Mac at RIT... everywhere I see a Macintosh at RIT, I
see that it's protected by FileGuard, including the Computer Science
Department.
My high-school also uses FileGuard.

Read your note in IM. I've tried a lot of programs, both public,
shareware, and commercial. The best I've found is Mac Control by BDW
Software. I ordered FoolProof and it is too limited, though the new
version fixes many of those limits. I wanted something that would teach
the desktop but keep my 400+ high school students from doing me in. I
also bought a site license (actually 3) to MacSecure. They never
produced a usable produce, and I understand that someone (Apple?)
purchased the remnants and was trying to get a product out. The
MacSecure I had was a menu-driven, bulldozer approach.

MacControl requires you to log in, and depending on how you, the manager
set things up, the kids can do almost everything, but when they log off,
the system returns to how you had it set up originally. Students can't
trash system files, can be locked out of the system folder, and many
other things.

I think that they may have a time-limited demo, but I bought a single
copy at about $50 and when it appeared to solve all my problems, called
them and they applied that to the cost of a site license, which was very
reasonable. I can't recall what it was, but it was in the $200-400
range.

I wish others knew of the product as it really has saved my sanity. I
keep 80-90 Macs supplied in my "spare time", and without this, no go!!!

If you have a Power Mac 7100 and if you're running Norton Utilities 3.0,
you might want to read this...

Apparently, there is a conflict between FileSaver 3.0 (part of the
Norton Utilities package) and Complete Undelete 2.0.3 from DataWatch.
Specifically, when using these control panels along with the CopyDoubler
2.0.4 control panel (CopyDoubler may or may not have something to do
with this), you may notice crashes with either "CHK" errors and/or
"Floating Point Coprocessor not installed" errors. This happens at
various times such as when closing windows and especially when you click
"OK" to empty the trash.

The solution, which has worked so far, is to change the loading order
of these control panels so that Complete Undelete loads AFTER FileSaver
and CopyDoubler. On my system, Complete Undelete is now the very last
extension or control panel that loads. So far, no crashes.

BTW: I'm running System 7.1.2 (what else?) with 16 mb RAM.

Has anyone else run into this problem??

P.S. BTW: I haven't contacted Symantec about this yet...

Subject: PowerMac/DiskCopy (Q)

Has anyone but me found that Apple's DiskCopy 4.2 doesn't much like
running on a PowerMac? Or at least under that hybrid of a PowerPC card
in a Q650?

I got the new Retrospect 2.1 (PPC Version) and -- as is my wont -- tried
to backup the (800K) disks first thing. No luck. Error code -74 as soon
as I inserted the disk onto which a copy should be made.

I thought I had a dead "destination" floppy. The next four 800K floppies
had the same problem. Sheesh! Has Dantz started copy protection? I then
invoked MacTools FastCopy. No problem, mon. Hmmm. Nuthin special about
FastCopy. So I tried DiskCopy on another 800K source disk. Same death.

DiskCopy 4.2 works normally on 1.44M floppies in PowerMac mode. But not
on 800K floppies. DART (Apple's non-sanctioned equivalent of DiskCopy) is
also perfectly happy to copy 800K floppies. I'm not as happy with the way
DART works as with either DiskCopy or FastCopy: Put in first disk, put in
second disk, put first disk back in. Redundant.

Have any of y'all seen this DiskCopy behavior? Or have I once again done
something terribly stupid and deserve to die?

Subject: Radius Pivot Monitor Problem

Well, I thought I was one of the few with a Radius Monochrome Pivot monitor
problem. In my case, the monitor is attached to a iisi and I always thought
it was a computer problem and not something to do with the monitor. Some
months back I thought the problem (occasional flickering images, which only
appear at certain times) was because of a faulty cable. However, even with
a new cable the problem has re-appeared. It is not getting worse (the monitor
is almost 3 years old), but it is irritating. It will be interesting to hear
>From other Radius Pivot owners who have similar problems.

I've been using 1.0.4 for a few days now and I haven't had any
problems like that (I've got MacsBug). It may be a problem with JPEGView.

I downloaded the 1.0.4 update with the idea that since it's been a
week in the archives and no one's mentioned any serious bugs, it must be
OK! Just my luck. :-)

I have the 1.0.2 updater if you need it. I found that 1.0.1 was one
of the best versions I ever had. Ever since then the updates seem to be
making my Mac slower and slower.

Obviously, I can't speak for other shareware authors, but for myself
I'd rather have the cash (even though it is a bit risky to send cash
by mail.) I have more floppies (from demo disks and old outdated
applications) that I have storage room for. That may or may not
be typical for others. It's just my two cents.

Subject: Shareware fees. (A)

I was considering acting as a clearing house for shareware fees. I got a
credit card account and a POBox specifically for that purpose but other
projects lowered the priority of this project.

The two problems I wanted to solve were non-USA currency translations and
shareware author address changes "Mail Returned, No Forwarding Address".

Is this a service that shareware authors would be interested in? If so,
send email to me at: [email protected]

I'm set up to do this, just haven't actively pursued it.

Subject: Upgrading a Mac Classic

Hey everyone!! I've got a question I hope you can help me with...

A friend of mine is retiring her Mac Classic after buying a PowerMac 7100, and
is going to give it to her parents. She's adding on an external hard drive
for more storage, but she needs to expand the memory beyond the 2MB built in to
run any decent software.

Any suggestions on upgrading to 6 or 8MB of RAM??

Also, what integrated software will run on a "Fat Classic" under System 6?
Under system 7? We're looking for good word processing and database
capabilities...

Thanks a lot, and hope to hear from you soon!!

Subject: Using DEC RZ55 drive on Macs (SE)

Howdy,
I am trying to use this DEC RZ55 drive on an SE, but the drive refuses to
format. I have used Silverlining v5.5 and FWD HardDrive ToolKit 1.3.1 without
any success. Both programs can access its ID etc, but can do nothing more than
that. Silverlining tries to access it during tests etc. but gives errors, while
FWD says the drive is not ready, please rescan. This is the only external SCSI
device (ID=1) and I tried the SCSI terminator in both pass-thru and
2nd-connector modes.

A kind respondent to my posting on comp.sys.mac.hardware mentioned that
the SE doesn't power the SCSI bus and so the drive is required to do that with
some jumper setting. He also mentioned that the drive should be internally
terminated, and that the Unit attention line (#40 on SCSI line) be disabled.

A search through Veronica indicated that there are couple of files on this
subject, but I keep getting errors while connecting to the gopher server.

So is there a "pre-packaged" way of formatting/using DEC drives on Macs?
I'll post a summery when I get this working.

Thanks,

Bilal A. Bhutta

Yes, ValueFax will work with LineShare. We were one of the beta-test
