I have a problem regarding the Apple 13" RGB monitor, below is
the replies that I have obtained on comp.sys.mac.hardware newsgroup after
failing to find any info on the sumex-aim info-mac archives.

I believe that this info should be invaluable for all 13" RGB monitor
owners.

This is an interesting but somewhat dated promo from apple. It takes you
through some of Apple's new hardware and there's a "win a Newton" competition
at the end (for residents in Australia at least).

Subject: [*] BBEdit extension: get-URL

This extension calls Anarchie to get a file or dir listing
>From within BBEdit (and Easy View, soon!).

Just place the insertion point on any URL that begins with
ftp: and choose the extension from the menu. Works best
with BBX-Keys of Jamie R. McCarthy.

If you need part of the URL, just select it first. Be sure
your selection contains "ftp:.../" (The final slash is
needed for a directory listing)

We might soon have a better version that works with other
kinds of URL's.

By default, it marks sections. If or is pressed,
it marks chapters.

Subject: [*] Off Hook 1.4; sends commands to your modem

OffHook is a tiny application which will 'busy out' your modem (or send any
other specified modem string) and then wait a predetermined amount of time
before launching another application. OffHook is intended to be used as
part of a Tabby/Aeolus/FidoNet event when you might not want callers to
logon while your BBS is busy processing mail messages.

OffHook is unique in that it can address the regular Printer and Modem
ports *and* any QuadraLink or Hurdler/Hustler serial port via a simple
pop-up menu.

If, for example, you run Formula One off of a CSI serial card, OffHook
ought to come in very handy.

Internet: [email protected]
CompuServe: 76004,1614
AppleLink: CLARIS.TECH
AOL: Claris or Claris CR

Remember, you can also reach these services via the Internet:

Applelink: simply append "@applelink.apple.com" to the AppleLink address.

CompuServe: replace any commas with periods, and append "@compuserve.com"

America On Line: remove any spaces and then append "@aol.com" to the AOL
address.

Subject: [Q] Problems wih sound-in settings on 660AV

Has anyone else experienced a situation where the sound in settings in the
sound control panels cannot be changed, "The sound input device is in use"
or something to that effect. Similarly the sound settings option in the
menu bar is greyed out in Video Monitor and Fusion Recorder. This problem
remains accross restarts, reinstallation of the sound control panel amd the
AudioVision extension, trashing of dsp prefs, audiovision prefs, video
monitor prefs etc.

Although my System Disks seem to be corrupted in that full installs no
longer work, running a few options, cd software, audiovision software etc
over and over eventually solves the problem. This is however extremely
frustrating so any help, similar experiences, suggestions would be greatly
appreciated.

My setup is : Centris 660AV, 8/230, System 7.1, Hardware system update 3.0
14" AudioVision Monitor, AudioVison software v1.0

Bare Bones Software acquires PopupFuncs, announces support for
Metrowerks

Natick, MA -- Bare Bones Software, Inc., today announced it has acquired
"PopupFuncs" from SciComp Software of Cupertino, CA. PopupFuncs is a
programmer's productivity tool which provides instant access to language
constructs defined in C, C++, Pascal, Object Pascal, Rez, and
assembly-language source files.

"Bare Bones Software will provide the marketing and support muscle,
freeing us to concentrate on developing new technologies and products,"
said Eric Slosser, proprietor of SciComp Software.

Rich Siegel, president and CEO of Bare Bones Software, said "The
acquisition of PopupFuncs is consistent with our goal of providing the
finest, most cost-effective productivity tools for Macintosh
developers."

Bare Bones Software also announced that they are readying a new release
of PopupFuncs. Version 2.4, slated to ship at the 1994 MacWorld Expo in
Boston, adds Metrowerks' CodeWarrior and Nisus Software's QUED/M to the
list of supported editors and environments. The current release supports
BBEdit, from Bare Bones Software, THINK C and Symantec C++ from Symantec
Corp., and MPW, from Apple Computer, Inc.

"Since beta, our customers had been demanding that we support
PopupFuncs. Because of the clean design of the PopupFuncs API, our
engineers needed less than two hours to make the necessary changes.
We're happy, and so are our users." said Greg Galanos, president and CEO
of Metrowerks.

"PopupFuncs is of such fundamental utility that anyone who composes code
on a Macintosh should have a copy," said Tom Emerson, software engineer
in the Development Tools Group of Symantec. According to Leonard
Rosenthol, director of advanced technology for Aladdin Systems, Inc.,
"PopupFuncs can be used with all major editors, and this makes it the
only utility of its kind worth considering."

PopupFuncs 2.4 will be available directly from Bare Bones Software,
beginning August 1. Single-copy pricing is US$29.00 per copy, plus
shipping and handling. For additional information, contact Bare Bones
Software at the address given above.

Subject: Boston Internet Access (?)

Folk, our international association (AIR, Association of Institutional
Research) will meet in Boston next May. We would very much like Internet
access for (1) presentations and (2) folks who just want to check their
mail. We had hoped that one of the local universities would give us free
guest accounts at its center. No luck. MIT (The best li'l tech school on
the Charles) was particularly disappointing. Its Comp Center director was
ostensibly a good friend of our local arrangements chair. When asked for
SLIP accounts, however, he demurred. Sorry, we only have PPP. Say what?
Isn't PPP just an alternative to SLIP for dial-in access? Methinks MIT's
person told our local arrangements chair to bugger off.

Our LA chair has no other ideas. One of my computer tech suppt folk found
NEARNet. Oh Goody. NEARNet will happily give us really high speed access,
with up to 256 IP addresses, for a mere $2,500. That caused the chair of
the meeting to swallow his gum until I noted that was $3 per registrant.
But then I swallowed my own gum. That only runs a line to the hotel. Some
other outfit would have to actually wire the hotel (presumably for a few
more bucks), and the hotel would have to actually let us do it. OK. Screw
really high speed access, and screw friendly local schools for dial-in
access. How about local commercial access? I found the following info in
the I-M archive, but it is a tad dated.

Do any of you folk in the Boston area dial into the Internet via a
commercial service? If you like what you are getting, could you please
let me know the service and a voice phone number?

Even better, are any of you Boston area folk related to a college or
university that'd be more amenable to letting the conference have SLIP
or PPP access from the hotel than is our "friend" at MIT? We'd love to
have free guest accounts, but we can pay.

Normand mentions FileMakerPro, 4D, FileForce, FoxPro. I believe FileForce
no longer exists. It was the entry level version of 4th Dimension and has
been superseded by ACIUS's 4D First. You can get a demo of 4D First from
ACIUS (408-252-4444) and no doubt online as well (try the demo directory at
umich.archive.edu).

Actually, something else you might consider is Revelations, which is a
shareware (or maybe freeware?) relational dp program. Last time I looked it
was at sumex, /app/revelations-107.hqx. Haven't a clue how powerful it is.

Subject: HyperGopher

Has anyone out there tried to write a hypercard stack that can access gopher.
We have looked at HyperFTP and it looks to be straightforward clean code.
The only problem we are having is getting it to access other things like
gopher and telnet. We have gone in and edited the script to access the
different port numbers but we keep getting our connection dropped.

Is there some logistic thing we are not seeing or has someone else out
there who has done this already. The main reason we are asking is that we
are trying to build a smart interface to lock certain features out of
gopher. We also want to limit the ammount of information that the user
sees.

Another thing we are looking for is some kind of source code or editor that
we can use to create XCMDs and XFCNs to communicate with TCP.

Any and all help would be appreciated.

Subject: ISDN Info--The Mother Lode!

A while back I inquired about ISDN resources. Boy, did I hit the mother lode!

Do you want to be on the bleeding--uh, leading edge of connective
technology? Then why bother with a 28.8 kbps modem when ISDN permits file
transfers at speeds up to 128 kilobits/sec [that's nearly 10 times faster
than your present 14.4 kbps modem!] over your local phone line at home or
at work? Or, you can talk and send 64kbps at the same time.
Unfortunately, to answer my own question, while ISDN service isn't that
expensive, the equipment still is.

If you have any questions about implementing ISDN, the document entitled "A
Catalog of National ISDN Solutions for Selected NIUF Applications, Second
Edition" will answer them.

Among the questions it answers: What equipment do I need for various
applications (connect to an Internet service provider, up/download data,
connect to my office LAN, connect to interactive services, pump video back
and forth, etc.), who makes the equipment, price, specifications (very
specific), even "What do I need to order from my local telco?"

It's available from info.bellcore.com. Check the "read me's". You can
download the specific sections of interest to you. NOTE: The PostScript
files require the font New Century Schoolbook, so if you have a 17-font PS
printer, you'll need to download the font before downloading the PS files.
And have plenty of paper handy: although the predigested PostScript files
print very quickly, some of the document sections are many pages long.

Also check the ISDN FAQ's archived as "isdn-faq" at ftp.uu.net in the
directory /usenet/news.answers (and probably at rtfm.mit.edu as well).

Good speed!

It is possible to set System 7.1's "Date & Time" control panel to create a
configuration like Phil reports. Please be sure that the Date & Time settings
are okay (click the "Date Formats..." button to examine the settings) before
going to all the trouble of a full system rebuild.

Subject: Macintosh Internet interviews

Hello, all

An article named "The Internet: culture, computer, gopher" has been
uploaded to the gopher server at The Royal Library, Denmark
(gopher.kb.bib.dk). The article appears in Word and text as well as in both
English and Danish. Please read the document "About The Royal Library
Gopher" for further instructions.

The people behind Eudora, Fetch, NewsWatcher, FTPd, Anarchie, TurboGopher,
Gopher Surfer, POPmail, MailStop and MailShare as well as The Whole
Internet, The Internet Starter Kit and TidBITS have been interviewed.
Furthermore, MacTCP is discussed.

The following questions have been answered by the interviewees:
Going beyond Apple's 10 year birthday, how does the future look?
Will the major Internet applications be PowerPC optimized?
Does System 7 Pro have a substantial impact on Internet software?
Should Apple pay more interest to the Internet overall?
How well does Macintosh Internet software fit into the AppleTalk LAN?
When you hear the terms Cyberspace and Global HyperMedia ...
Is the Internet sometimes perceived as some kind of Virtual Reality?
Which Macintosh do you use and/or what is your favorite Macintosh?
What is your favorite Internet service and piece of software?
How does the Internet look in 5 or 10 years?
Is the Internet sometimes perceived as an anarchy?

At this point, I would like to express my sincere thanks to everyone
involved in the project; it was very entertaining and educational. You are
the best!

Please observe, that The Royal Library Gopher is (and should be) the one
and only place, from which to obtain the article (in whole or in part).

Subject: MacLink Plus Flame

Just wanted to alert the info-mac community to a "feature"
just discovered in MacLink Plus. My officemate was in
the "PC Exchange" module of her legit, paid-for, honest-
to-goodness legal copy of this package the other day,
when she got a nasty message. "License expired!" it
shouted, "Must buy upgrade!" (or something to that
effect). Then, it proceeded to self-destruct. It erased
all of the modules belonging to the package, including
pref files from the System Folder.

When she called up the company and asked what was going
on, the company basically shrugged and said, "That's our
policy. You can buy an upgrade or keep reloading from
your original disks."

Funny, she couldn't find any mention of this factoid in
the manual (you can bet she looked). Is this the software
gestapo, or what? And, how did the company know a year
ago when this software was sold to her that there would
be an upgrade needed exactly one year from purchase?
Doesn't the market or new features determine the exact
timing of upgrades???

Both of us find this policy to be distasteful in the
extreme, especially since this was not made clear at/before
the time of purchase or in the documentation. Has anyone
else had this experience with this software package, company,
or any other company? I hate to tell them, but instead of
pushing me in the direction of automatically buying upgrades,
they are pushing me in the opposite direction--boycott city.
My officemate was already having a bad day, and when she
discovered this, she was incensed.

Please comment to Info-Mac or email me directly.

Thanks,
Sherrill

Roz, those mystery marks are either a bi-product of a conversion gone
slightly hay-wire or they indicate the presence of links. Since the file
came from Win Word, they are almost certainly OLE-links, not publish and
subscribe links. To test this theory, click between two brackets and then
look toward the bottom of the Edit menu. If the Link Options command is not
dimmed out, then you have a link. You can use the Link Options command to
break the link, and (if you clicked in the client/desination of the link)
you can control how it updates.

Hope this helps... I'm a little behind on my Info-Macs.

help. It didn't."

I've recently had the same problem this week with a PPC 7100 at work. I found
that by disabling the Modern Memory Manager in the Memory control panel, the
problem went away. This occurs with only the minimum extensions needed to run
the system on our network. It appears to be something that cc:Mail is doing,
since both an older version (2.03?) and 2.1 give the same error. I am not
aware of what exactly the Modern Memory Manager does, so I don't know what
problems the user may encounter by leaving it turned off, but I'm sure Apple
has it there for some reason. I have not contacted cc:Mail yet, but based
upon Lotus' commitment to Mac s/w, I'm not sure if it will do any good.

If anyone can suggest a work-around, and/or explain the Modern Memory
Manager, it would be greatly appreciated.

Stephen, I don't use MathType, myself, but do have a suggestion for you:
try saving the equation as an EPSF, and then import it into MacDraw to
rotate. If that doesn't help, try saving the rotated equation as an EPSF
and import it into DeltaGraph. And if you're still having trouble, save
the DeltaGraph chart as an EPSF and import that into MSWord. All that
sounds really troublesome, I know, but it should work. If you can't save
directly as an EPSF, you can print to disc as an EPSF using the LaserWriter
8.1.x driver (Mac enhanced EPSF with preview).

I often save my Expressionist equations as EPSF and import into a draw
program to manipulate it.

Good luck!

Dear Netters,
Sorry if this is a FAQ, but I can't seem to find the source of the following
discrepency.
I am using a vanilla System 7, on a vanilla Macintosh LC. The top of window
that shows my hard disk contents says I have 21,124 K in disk, 15,111 k
available. Yet, when I view by size my hard disk contents, they add up to
23,276k. Both can't be true, can they?
Does the top finder window not add in the invisible files, while the View by
size calculations do? This is on the standard 40 MB internal Quantum hard
disk that came with my system.
Just curious why one should say 21,124, while the other says 23,276k.
If it makes any different I am using Autodoubler, thought at this time
automatic compression is off.
Just trying to find the source of the missing 2 MB.
An LC can not use Virtual memory.
Thank you.

Well, the fact is, this behavior happens. I've never fully understood it,
but it has something to do with the way the System handles memory and the
way Word expects the memory. The problem isn't caused by you, and there is
not a specific fix. Things that can help the problem include:

- launch a different app before launching Word.
- change Word's RAM allocation (try 1,050 or 1,075) It's not so much that
you must increase the allocation, but that you want to change it.
- install or remove an extension or two, thus changing the amount of memory
used by the System.
