Subject: [!] Digest #97

Ahh yes, another kink in our lives...

Well, I had thought that it was pretty difficult to loose a digest with our new
scripts... nope. WRONG!

As many of you have noted, digest number 97 never showed up in your mail boxes
or on USNET. Sorry. We managed to make the digest, but forgot to mail it out.
We then made the next digest and overwrote the first one, number 97, and poof!
it was gone. :(

Sorry about the missing files (I think this was my fault too. Grrr).

Cheers,
Gordon (info-mac moderator)

Subject: [*] Bargain Basmement Graphics 0.9; a magazine

Bargain Basement Graphics 0.9 is a "beta' issue of an upcoming Macintosh
graphics magazine. It is in DocMaker format, and requires at System 7, and
256 colours to run. It will run with only 16 colours, but the graphics
won't look as "nice".

Bargain Basement Graphics is aimed at those Mac graphics artists who don't
have alot of money to throw around. This "beta" issue includes shareware
reviews and articles on how to get software at discount prices.

This issue was produced in order to get feedback from readers in regards to
the content, and focus of the magazine. Any comments would be greatly
appreciated.

This is version 1.1 of the Chrystar Demo. Bug fixes include support for
monitors of (virtually) any size (see read me), but definitely 12-21" ones.
It also should slow down on faster computers.

This is the first release by Nemesis Productions.

This is a short graphical demo that displays and rotates up to 1200+
dots. These dots are formed into the shape of the Chrysler Building, a
Cube, the letters "][gs", and a bouncing Ball.

Requires 8bit color.

Subject: [*] Mail2000 a program to read textfiles containing e-mail.

Mail2000 is a small application to read e-mail textfiles. I
wrote it because I have a lot of old e-mail lying around on my
discs which I occasionally want to read. Mail2000 reads
textfiles containing e-mail and provides threading of the
mails. This is not for people who have fancy high-speed
TCP/IP, slip connections and I dont know what else, but for
those who save their mails in textfiles and keep it at home on
their Mac.

Features include reading of UN*X style terminated files,
stripping of mail-headers and threading on subject and
sender.

It needs system 7 to run.

This archive contains Mail2000, a read me file and an example
file.

Subject: [*] MathPad 2.2.7; "a general purpose graphing scientific calculator"

MathPad is a general purpose graphing scientific calculator. It uses text
input rather than simulating buttons on a hand held calculator. This live
scratchpad interface allows you to see and edit your entire calculation.
Formulas can be entered directly and different values can be plugged in for
easy "what if" calculating.

In addition to being a handy little calculator, MathPad can also take on
larger problems. Simple plotting allows quick visualization of results.
General purpose arrays allow calculations involving vectors, complex
numbers, matrix algebra etc. 2D arrays can be displayed as grayscale or
color images. Several examples are included showing such things as equation
solving, curve fitting, vector calculations and numerical solutions of
differential equations.

MathPad does not have all the features of high-end commercial programs such
as Mathematica but it can handle fairly sophisticated numerical problems
with a MUCH smaller memory requirement (170K).

MathPad 2.2.7 is an upgrade intended to replace the previously posted
version 2.1.5. Existing documents will still work with the new version.

Some of the new features:
* An "include" command allows definitions to be read from another file.
* Interface to allow users to add externally compiled functions.
* Assignments to array elements.
* The command "plotline" now also works for {x,y} arrays.
* Plot option for adding grid lines.
* Improved rand() function.
* Extended keyboard support.
* Hex input.
* Handles data file aliases.
* Bug fixes

MathPad runs on a Mac Plus or higher with system 6 or system 7.

This software is free for non-commercial distribution and may be included
on the info-mac CD-ROM.

The application and its documentation are enclosed in a StuffIt archive.

Subject: [*] MyEyes 1.0.4; have your computer watch you

MyEyes
created by Federico Filipponi
using THINK Pascal 4.0 (=A9 Symantec Corp.)

* What is MyEyes?
MyEyes is a small application that draws on the menubar a pair of eyes
constantly following the cursor movement.
Yes, I've already seen the Eyeballs INIT (I loved it!) and I must admit
that it's a very old idea, but when I started working on color machines
those poor, black & white peepers seemed to me a little dull. So, guess
what! I added color and lived happy.
In fact MyEyes differs from Eyeballs in many other ways. For example, the
eyes position is not relative to the menubar length: you can move the eyes
using the click-and-drag technique and decide their horizontal position
(this works only when MyEyes is the frontmost application). For better
results, I suggest to place the eyes to the left of the help menu icon.
MyEyes is an application, not an INIT, so you have to place it (or an alias
to it) on the Startup Items folder to have it automatically launched every
time your Macintosh is started. Use the "Install MyEyes.." command under
the "File" menu and let MyEyes do the job for you.
Other features, accessible via the "Settings..." command, are
self-explaining and don't need comments. Use Balloon Help=81 to get
additional info.

* Disclaimer:
MyEyes is FREEWARE, which means that you are allowed to use it yourself,
copy and distribute it to anyone you wish, provided that you leave it
unchanged. However, I don't assume any responsibility for damages caused,
directly or indirectly, by the use of this software.

* Requirements:
MyEyes runs only under System 7.0 or later and needs color Quickdraw to
perform offscreen drawings.

3.6: Direct from Apple

Apple has discontinued catalog sales.

3.9: New Equipment Prices

Many models have been discontinued and moved to the used equipment
section. Most Quadras and PowerMacs have seen prices fall moderately
between twenty and two hundred dollars. I've added some pricing
on the new Powerbooks and Duo's as well as including the Apple
Workgroup Server's for the first time.

4.1: Macrotime:

PowerPC 603 machines have been pushed back to spring 1994 at the
earliest, primarily because of problems with the 68040 emulator.

6.3: Does anyone know a good mail-order company?

Subject: [*] Peter's Player 1.0.1; "a simple QuickTime movie player"

Enclosed is Peter's Player 1.0.1, a minor upgrade to Peter's Player 1.0 whose
main purpose is to enhance the playback of looping movies for users running
QuickTime 2.0. A couple of other minor playback-quality enhancements have
been made since 1.0 as well.

Peter's Player is a simple QuickTime movie player that is designed to play
movies as smoothly as possible:

-If there is enough RAM, it will load the entire movie before playing it, for
the fastest-possible playback.

-It can detect the best dit depth to display a movie at and set your monitor
appropriately.

-It is "Accelerated For Power Macintosh," running at maximum possible speed on
either 68k or Power Macintoshes.

-It can play movies without showing the standard movie controller, which can
be distracting, and slows down playback.

-It supports keyboard shortcuts with the controller showing or hidden (the
arrow keys step forward and back frames, the space bar plays or pauses,
etc...).

-It can play every frame in a QuickTime movie, no matter how large (in this
mode it will never play frames back faster than intended, but it may play them
back slower, and any soundtrack there is will be ignored).

-It plays movies against a black background, and you can even hide the menu
bar, so (a) you're not distracted by the desktop, (b) you can dump
smaller-than-full-screen movies to video tape, and (c) you can play movies
that have custom color tables without screwing up the rest of the colors
on-screen.

Peter's Player is free for individual use, with a US $20 fee requested to
support development of future versions (and for automatic notice of upgrades

Snds-for-Fonts-folder-1.0 is a sound suitcase with 21 cool sounds that has
been modified to happily reside in a System 7.1 Fonts folder. Installing
sounds in the Fonts folder will prevent loss of sounds when (not if) your
system is corrupted, and will reduce the risk of system corruption if you
frequently move sounds into or out of your system at present. If you use
Ric Ettore's Sound Manager package you may have a Snd suitcase in your
System folder. Snds-for-Fonts-folder-1.0 can replace your Snd suitcase and
make these sounds available to SndControl and to your alarm software or any
other extension, application, or DA that access sounds. With an
appropriate extension startup manager you can choose to load or skip
Snds-for-Fonts-folder-1.0, thus saving RAM in tight situations.

Floating Point Unit (FPU) to work on computers without one, such as the
IIsi, IIvi, LC series, Classic II & Color Classic series, Performa
series, Power Macintosh, and some models of PowerBook, PowerBook Duo,

FPU applications that formerly crashed will begin working. SoftwareFPU
requires a 68020, 68030, 68LC040, or PowerPC processor.

Version 3.0 allows the user to enable and disable SoftwareFPU without
restarting, adds balloon help, and fixes a bug that prevented Systat

This shareware version will work on Power Macintosh computers but is not
PowerPC-native. A PowerPC-native version can be obtained by registering

SuperClamp is an Absolutely Free Utility Magazine for Today's Young Woman.
SuperClamp is a hard-hitting utility mag that takes off the kid gloves and puts

have action! Features include Pick-Up Lines, Hair Today, the Outrage of the
Month, Truth or Dare, and others.

SuperClamp is the illegitimate descendant of Cyber Rag, the groundbreaking
multimedia magazine pioneered by Jaime Levy... (i.e., I was impressed by Cyber
Rag and Electronic Hollywood and wanted to do something like them, and these
electronic issues of SuperClamp are an experiment to test the depth of Internet

The advantage of SuperClamp over Cyber Rag is that it is freely available over
the internet versus $6.00 a pop per issue of Cyber Rag...

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE: Bold!

SuperClamp is now. SuperClamp touches on all worlds, dealing each month with
money, travel, health, movies, books, fashion, society, decorating, and

TechnoManiac is a three-dimensional game using vector graphics

You can play against the computer or against another person

paced mode, where you essentially shoot what you will,
and a turn-based mode, where you take turns, monitoring
your energy supply.

All in all, a blast, if I do say so myself.

Are you sure it's from the System? What application was running when you
got the error? Some applications report their own error codes (Retrospect,
Helix among others), and you'd have to decode them from the appropriate
manual or (more likely) their tech support.

Maybe "stiction"! My first 105Q did this, and LaCie exchanged it for a new
one. I'm amazed you haven't encountered it before. It may have something
to do with the lubrication of the spindle, or maybe dust or whatever.
Better not depend too much on it until you get it fixed.

Try re-installing your system software.

A similar situation was encountered by a friend of mine on
his new PowerBook 520c, which came with pre-installed
System 7 Pro and other software. In addition to Word 5.1, the
bug affected all numbers in Quicken 4.0 making the
checkbook unreadable.

After several phone calls to Apple, Microsoft, and Intuit
Apple eventually determined the problem likely resulted
>From a faulty installation of system software. My friend was
advised to do a "Clean Install" from the original system
software diskettes. He did, and the problem disappeared.

The newer Macintosh User's Guides include instructions for
a Clean Install under "Re-installing System Software." If
memory serves me correctly, the procedure is roughly:

1. Shutting down the computer.
2. Restarting the computer using the Install diskette as a
startup disk.
3. Removing the old Finder from the old System folder to the
desktop and renaming it "Old Finder."
4. Renaming the old System folder "Storage."
5. Installing the new system software from the Install diskette.
4. Moving any additional Control Panels, Extensions or other
files you had previously installed from "Storage" to the
new System folder.
5. Trashing the Old Finder and the now-redundant "Storage"
folder.

Hope this helps.

Stuffit Expander is the simplest of them, and you should be able to
find that through Archie or by FTP from the Info-Mac archives.

.SEA files are "Self extracting archives", which means they
uncompress themselves. Most compression programs provide this feature, but
it's best not to use it that much on the Internet because it increases
download times for dial-up users.

don' know anything in the whole world which is not relational !!!
I heard about few names: FileMakerPro, 4D, FileForce, FoxPro.
There exist certainly many others.

What is the best database?

Certainly the price must be considered but the power and the
ease of use are probably more important.

I would greatly appreciate if anyone send me informations at

So, Apple has just released a new line of '040 Macs known collectively
as the...630 Macs??? You gotta be kidding! [source: TIDBITS #235]

How many of you with brand-new Blackbirds had a moment's disconcerted
pause and thought for a moment that PowerPC Powerbooks had landed early?

Did it occur to any of those Cupertino folks that the PowerMacs (and
their likely descendants based on the PPC 601, 603, 604, 620, etc.,
chips) would usually be brought to mind whenever someone refers to a
Mac as a "6xx Mac"? Suppose that, years from now, if I'm talking to
someone who has software that he's running on a Mac that has a fast
620 chip, I might ask, "But will it run on a 601 Mac?", because I will
still have my aging but still serviceable PM 7100...?

Can't you see the ads from CompUSA, "New 604 Macs! Best prices!", to
let Mac buyers know that the faster Motorola chip is in them?

So into the midst of what was starting to look like a cleaner naming
scheme lands (with a nomenclatural thud) the 630 Macs, not to be con-
fused with the 620 Macs which will hit the market considerably later and
have nothing in common, chip-wise, with the 630, which doesn't HAVE a
630, it has a CISC '040...

Pass the anacin.

Mark London ([email protected]) asked about software that allows pulling down
of menus without clicking.

NowMenus, a hierarchal menu utility by Now Software, includes this feature. A
user can set NowMenus to make menus (in the menubar only) drop by passing the
mouse over the menu's title or by clicking on the menu's title. The menu will
remain visible until the mouseclick (either selecting an item or exiting by
clicking on the desktop) or until the user navigates over another menu title.

Caveat: NowMenus is only available in a bundle called Now Utilities. However,
one particular utility, Super Boomerang, creates a set of powerful file
navigation menus that appear in Apple's SF get/put dialogs (Open and Save)
that may be helpful to users seeking alternatives based on physical
abilities.

BTW: I have also experienced the conflict between NowMenus and Control Strip

If she has the HyperCard 2.2 player, then you're probably out of
luck: I don't have it myself, but I believe it only lets you browse or edit
text.

As for batch exporting, you could probably write a script which
goes through each card, selects the graphic, and then chooses "Export
paint..." (is that what it's called?) from the File menu. However, I think
you have to specify a file name (through a dialog box) for each export, so
it may not be that useful. :-/

Subject: Getting rid of KeyServer (A)

In simple terms, KeyServer patches a code resource in the application. It
removes some code, and replaces it with it's code. The original code is
moved to the server. When you launch the application, when it needs it, it
asks the keyserver for that original code.

You could remove KeyServer code from your application but you would still
need to know what code it removed and you would have to add that code back
in. In short, it is not possible to remove Keyserver protection by using
just ResEdit.

Of course I'm assuming that you want to remove the protection from an
application that you personally created and that you have somehow lost the
source code. Otherwise you would just grab a fresh copy off of your master
disks. You did pay for the original unprotected version of this now
protected application, correct? You are not trying to pirate software,
correct?

If you're having trouble navigating an automated phone answering system,
this might work: When prompted to "press 1 for ...", don't do anything.
After a little while, the system *should* forward you to a human. This

It shouldn't do that. Be sure you choose the "Hard Close" button. The
"Soft Close" has been reported to permit that kind of behavior. Also be
sure you click the "Hang up on close" checkbox, and set "echo interval" to

You can set the idle timeout value in the Config PPP control panel (I use
10 minutes) and the connect timeout (I use 100 seconds) by clicking the
"Config..." button. Less than 100 doesn't work consistently for me.

please respond to me directly as well as to info-mac. Many thanks,

Subject: Microsoft Quick Basic and 040 CPUs

Netters,

Does anyone know if there is a version of Microsoft Qucik Basic which
will run on 040 CPUs with the cache enabled. I have version 1.00e which
refuses to run unless I disable the cache on my Centris 610.

Thanks,

Subject: PowerMac 8100 and Type 3 Postscript don't mix

Here's one I hope the net.wisdom can assist with ...

I'm having trouble printing type 3 PS fonts from a PowerMac 8100: these
fonts print as the default text font, at about 4x the intended point size.

I'm running QuarkXPress 3.11 (happens to type defined within QXP and also
>From within imported EPS files), Laserwriter 8.1.1 with the PPD for HPLJIII
and ATM 2.0.3, but fiddling with font substitution, changing to ATM v3.6,
or reverting to Laserwriter 7.1.2 makes no difference.

On my IIci, the same set up works perfectly well, so I'm currently porting
documents across to this machine for printing. It's an irritating
inconvenience for those few documents for which I happen to need type 3 PS
fonts.

I'm tempted to think the problem's due to the different hardware/system
software. The 8100 is currently running system 7.1.2 as supplied with the
machine last week. Is system upgrade 3.0 tailor-made to cure this problem?

Any clues gratefully appreciated.

Cheers,

Chris

Dave,

It depends which software you're using. There have been several
compatibility problems with the 660AVs, mostly with games: there is an
ongoing incompatible games list for the AV macs, and I read about the
occasional problem with the communications side of the AV macs.

But hey, I don't own a 660AV (only used one for a few months), so
I'd get a second opinion.

Subject: Stuffit Expander and Drop Stuff Very low price

As a registered user of Stuffit Lite I sent a message to Aladdin about the
shareware price of Stuffit Expander and DropStuff which were recently archived
at sumex. The price for a new customer is 30$, but for someone who already
registered for Stuffit Lite, it is only 15$. That is quite a bargain, because
after trying both products it could not be more convenient to stuff and
unstuff.
Even at 30$ it is quite a deal. It is great to see that some companies are
still respecting their customers. Now shareware products are sometimes better
supported then major products. It is not necessary to name companies we all
know who are laughing at us on their way to the bank.:-(

CMP/DROP-STUFF-WITH-ENHANCER-35.HQX and CMP/STUFFIT-EXPANDER-35.HQX are the
two archives you need to get the complete stuffing and unstuffing package.

Subject: System 6.0.8L

I can see everyone out there thinking oh no, not another recalcitrant who
will not use System 7.
Well, not this time. My Classic II and LCII are both happy on 7.1 (and
possibly on 7.5 when it is released?). However, I have an old "portable"- a
Cambridge Z88, (which I define as truly portable giving 20 hours of work on
one set of penlight batteries) which I want to start using again to prepare
texts during the holidays. The problem is that the transfer program is not
System 7 compatible. No problem, I can boot my LCII from a System 6 disk
and hey presto, it works. The problem is the Classic II. It will not use
6.0.8. I have read that 6.0.8L was prepared specifically for these
machines, and that Apple Canada even listed it in their catalogue (sorry,
catalog), but I cannot locate it.

Does anyone out there have a copy they can supply me with?

Thanks, Keith Veitch.

PS. Anyone out there still using the Z88, or have bits they want to get rid
of?

.sea files are "Self extracting archives", which mean they
uncompress themselves. Just double click a ".sea" file, perhaps tell it
where to put the file, and it will uncompress itself.

I looked that up in the NewsWatcher documentation, and you should
find uuUndo in:

Hi! I really really really want that Nike soccer commercial as a
QuickTime movie...you know, the commercial with Ramos, Bebeto et al.
kicking that soccer ball all over the world? If anyone has digitized it,
could they tell me where I can get it? Or maybe could someone do it? I
don't care about size, I just want smoothness of playback.
