Subject: [!] file listings changing
After July 22 we will be changing over to a slightly different format
in help/all-files.txt and help/recent-files.txt. From then on, all
files in those lists will carry a date in the format .
Currently, files new in the last 6 months use the format .
This change should not affect mirrors using Lee McLoughlin's Perl
mirror package.
BTW, this change was advertised and planned for a few months ago,
but didn't take place at that time.

Subject: [*] Autograph 1.1; an Eudora signature utility
Autograph 1.1 README Copyright (c) 1993-1994 David Kabal FREE!
** CHANGES
-- Support for Eudora 2.xx
Read below. Where you see settings file substitute signature file. (ie,
tell it which file to modify, and alias it and call the alias "Eudora
Settings" and put it in the signature(s) folder(s))
-- Multiple Eudora folders capability
This version added the ability to select which Eudora Settings file to modify.
With no additional information given, Autograph will look for a file called
"Eudora Settings" in a folder called "Eudora Folder" inside the active System
folder. These can all be aliases....
If you have multiple Eudora folders on your disk, make sure that an alias (or
the real thing) of "Eudora Settings" is in the same folder(s) as the
signature(s).
Easy huh? This works for random signatures too!
More explanation: say you have a folder called "Signatures" containing
signatures like I do. Your Eudora settings file is somewhere on some disk. Make
an alias of it. Drop it in the Signatures folder. Autograph will not look in
the
System folder anymore! Autograph will use the alias to find your settings
file.
As long as the alias is called "Eudora Settings" and resides in the same
folder as the signature/text file, it will modify this file. This could
conceivably be used to modify any file (Why? I don't know). Multiple
folders could have different aliases pointing to different Eudora Settings
files.
Obviously, everyone should have their own set of signatures to avoid
conflicts.
-- Multi-language compatibility
Now the folder (Eudora Folder in English) and file (Eudora Settings) to change
are stored in the resource fork of Autograph (STR# 100). If I don't have a
version of Autograph in YOUR language, you can make one! I currently have only
English and Swedish versions, so send me one modified in YOUR language and I
can
distribute it!
-- Random signatures
Yes, that feature we've all been waiting for:
If you drag a FOLDER over Autograph, it picks a random file in that folder to
be
your signature. Be careful. Make sure all your files in that folder are
acceptable signature files.

Subject: [*] Chat 2.0.6 Release; conferencing software
Chat is a TCP/IP Chat Server for the Macintosh. Using Chat on a Macintosh
equipped with MacTCP will allow other machines to telnet to that machine
and participate in a group CB style discussion.
**** WHATS NEW IN 2.0.6 ****
The user password bug has been fixed.
A new option has been added to allow the chat room application to beep
whenever someone connects.
Adminstrative variables have been added to allow administrative setting
of beep on login, prompt for channel at login, and subject. They are
BEEP, PROMPT, and SUBJECT, respectively.
A new menu option, though currently not implemented, has been added which
will allow the administrator to control whether users can change the
subject of the channel.
The help text has been updated to reflect the change in the /CHANNEL
command, which (as of v.2.0.5) lists the channels and subjects if no channel
is specified.

Subject: [*] Commander Demo; a 4D eletronic reference
Commander 2.0 Released
Golden Micro Solutions are pleased to announce the release of Commander
v2.0. Commander is an on-line command reference for the 4th Dimension=AE
procedural language.
Commander contains over 95% of the 4th Dimension Language Reference=
Manual
in an easy to use and search format. All 4th Dimension=AE commands=
are
included along with the full descriptions of those commands as contained=
in
the Language Reference Manual. Additional notes and source code examples
have been added to suppliment the original decriptions where appropriate.
All other chapters of the 4th Dimension=AE Language Reference Manual=
that 4th
Dimension=AE users frequently need (such as 'The Layout Execution=
Cycle',
and 'Components of Processes'), are also contained within additional
Command Set files that are accessed by Commander.
Advantages Of Using Commander
* Find the information or command description you are looking=
=20
for easily in a seconds.
* Easily navigate from one command reference to another using=
=20
'hyper-text' jumping, and rapidly skip back through the topics=
=20
you've just looked at.
* No more having to carry the 4th Dimension Language =20
Reference manual around whereever you go.
* Additional notes about commands, extra source code=20
fragments, and all recent addenda to the LR manual included.
* Uses very little RAM, so you can have Commander open=20
whenever you're using 4th Dimension-this is no memory hog.
* Use standard copy techniques to copy source code examples =20
from Commander and paste directly into your own procedures.
* Commander can be set to automatically hide itself when you=20
switch it into the background-there are no additional=20
windows cluttering up your desktop when they're not needed.
* Create and use additional 'Command Set' files to expand the
commands/information you can access with Commander.
* Is supplied with a demonstration database showing how you=20
can access the Command Set files from with your 4D=20
databases.

Subject: [*] commsService; "a 'rolodex' like communications facility"
commsService - Software Version - 1.0
commsService is a easy-to-use application that provides a "rolodex" like
communications facility. The application provides facilities for recording
the details of commonly used connections/sessions as a series of parameters
on an individual "card".
A communications "card" is referred to as a "service", which is defined as
any process running on a local or remote computer, eg. an Online Public
Access Catalogue (OPAC) or a Campus Wide Information System (CWIS). Each
service is uniquely defined via a series of 12 parameters that describe
attributes such as the name, the method used to connect to the service,
the login and logout scripts, etc.
Service definitions allow for multiple, simultaneous sessions to be active
at any one time. A typical session might therefore include a serial
connection to your local OPAC in one window, whilst another window displays
information from a CWIS, and a third displays a remote network connection
to a second OPAC.
The application utilises the power of HyperCard's scripting language,
HyperTalk to provide a powerful communication scripting facility. It
achieves this by defining a series of communication specific language
extensions that enable scripts to communicate directly with services.
commsService is based upon Apple's Communications Toolbox technology,
consequently connectivity is only limited by the range of Connection and
Terminal Emulation tools that are available on your machine.
What You Need To Run commsService.
In order to run commsService 1.0 and activate any of the example services
you will need a Macintosh with the following installed software :
a) System 7.0 or later
and, if you wish to launch any of the tcp/ip network examples
b) MacTCP 1.1 or later
What You Must Do To Run commsService.
You must Install the CONTENTS of the "Comms Tools" folder. To do this,
simply select and drag the entire CONTENTS of the "Comms Tools" folder to
the System folder. System 7 will then take over and install the items
appropriately.

Subject: [*] ControlStripPatcher 2.0; allows use on all Macs
This new version of ControlStripPatcher does not modify any actual code.
Thanks to Troy Gaul for getting an Apple engineer to spill the beans.
ControlStripPatcher modifies Apple's new Control Strip software so that
it can work on desktop Macs. For some strange reason, current versions
are disabled on anything except Powerbooks and Duos.
Control Strip puts this little control strip, hence the name, at the
bottom of your screen. It can be used to control various features on
your machine. One neat thing is that CS is modular in nature, thereby
allowing third parties to create new modules. A unofficial header
file for creating control strip modules is included in this archive.
Cheers,
Rob

Subject: [*] LanTest 1.1 - File Server Performance Evaluation Tool
LanTest is an utility designed to test file server performance in a
Macintosh environment. It tests the following operations:
* Creating 100 files of 20kb each
* Opening and closing 100 files.
* Remove 100 files.
* Write 3 Mb to a file.
* Read 3 Mb from a file.
* Lock and unlock 4000 records.
* Read a directory containing 320 entries.
The utility can perform a mixture of these tests using a given number
of times and display the timings as well as an average. All results are
written into an ASCII logfile as well. The utility will count the
number of concurrently running LanTest programs in the current zone, if
not all of these test the same server the number of users displayed
might be misleading.
As all benchmarks, the results must be interpreted carefully and all
test parameters should be documented together with the results.
Changes since version 1.0.3:
* Allow clicking on the text of a button to toggle the value.
* Warn the user if he/she is testing the local hard disk.
* Better directory chooser (the old one was plain ugly).
Known Bugs:
* Testing through the LocalTalk port can distort the test result
considerably as the Mac's clock is stopped too long from the LocalTalk
driver. This appears to depend upon Mac model.

Subject: [*] MacPing 3.0 DEMO; a network testing utility
MacPing tests how well your AppleTalk or IP (Internet Protocol)
network carries data packets. Just as a sonar or radar system
sends a signal and waits for the echo, MacPing sends "probe"
packets and waits for responses from the various devices connected
to that network. If all the responses return, then your network is
probably working well. If a few (or many) responses are lost,
MacPing can help you diagnose what's wrong.
MacPing differs from other network testing programs in that it
tests in parallel all the devices on a particular AppleTalk
network or zone, or devices in a range of IP addresses. This
allows you to compare the responses of different devices on
the same network to determine the cause of network problems.
Note that MacPing will not flood the network with packets:
it sends only one packet into the network at any time.
For more information about running MacPing, read the Quick
Tutorial section in the Help window. Read the Troubleshooting
Networks help text to learn more about ways to use MacPing to
isolate problems.
Requirements
MacPing requires at least a Macintosh Plus computer, running
System 6.0.5 or newer. It also requires a network connection,
either LocalTalk, EtherTalk, or dial-up connections such as
Apple Remote Access (ARA), Shiva Dial-In, or others. MacPing
is compatible with System 7.0 and works with both Phase I and
Phase II AppleTalk software.
If you wish to test IP devices, you must also install
MacTCP 2.0.4 or newer.
This demonstration version of MacPing will run for thirty days
after it is first run. It is also limited to testing a maximum
of 5 zones. Otherwise, it has all the capabilities of the full
MacPing versions.

I am sending this for the author. Here is the author's description of
MathLibFast. --Ben
Trig functions too slow on the PowerPC!
Hands up all who would like a speed up in ALL their applications that call
the standard trig functions in the PPC math libraries. All of you? Great!
The trig functions in this file* are about 10x faster than the ones in
MathLib. The great thing is that any app that calls these functions will
automatically see some benefit- just drop the MathLibFast shared library
into the extensions folder (no need to reboot). To slow your apps down
again, just remove MathLibFast. The CFM searchs first in the application
directory , then in extensions so you could use this conditionally with
particular apps.
Hopefully Apple will soon release a new Mathlib that is more impressive than
the current effort!

Subject: [*] RAM Doubler Indicator Patch (vers. 1.04)
The attached ".sit.hqx" file contains a "ResCompare" patch for Ram
Doubler version 1.04. The patch turns on the activity indicator by
default at startup. (This effect can be otherwise achieved by holding
down the ESC key when the mac boots.)
It is not for use with previous versions of Ram Doubler - thus it may
be worthwhile keeping the previous patch I submitted, which patches
versions 1.03, and (I think) 1.02. (Although why someone would choose
not to upgrade...)
>From the "Read me, please." file:
This patch is distributed as "gratitude-ware", in gratitude to the
many fine programmers who have produced far more sophisticated
freeware and shareware products for Macintosh users throughout the
universe.
This patch will turn on the activity indicator in version 1.04 of RAM
Doubler. The activity indicator is a small white dot (a single pixel)
in the upper left-hand corner of the screen that blinks when RAM
Doubler is doing it's stuff. (Because some Macs, such as powerbooks,
have screens without rounded corners, this indicator is invisible.) I
find the indicator useful because it aids me in determining why my
system is not running as quickly as I think it should be. With Apple's
virtual memory, I can hear the hard disk spin, and see the hard drive
activity light. As distributed, RAM Doubler provides no such
indication of it's efforts.
This patch does NOT allow you to increase the "multiplier", i.e. this
patch will not turn RAM Doubler into RAM Quintupler, or the like.
Inquiries about this patch can be sent to it's "author", Ross E.
Bergman, at "[email protected]".

Shutdown FX 2.1 is a fun little software package which will fade your

effects. This package includes complete THINK C 7 source code, project
files, and resource files for all components of the Shutdown FX package:
system extension, startup application, control application, Gestalt
function, shutdown procedure, Notification Manager response procedure,
and all 67 fade modules. (Relax, I didn't include 67 project files.)
Since fades are stored as external modules (each in its own file), other
programmers can easily create their own fades and add to their collection.
See the Shutdown FX control application help section ("tech talk" page)
for more details, or read about it yourself in TEXT 613 in sfx..rsrc.

Subject: [*] Specular LogoMotion 1.5 Demo; a 3D logo animation program
This is a non-expiring demo version of Specular International's LogoMotion 1.5
for 68k and Power Macintoshes. LogoMotion makes it easy and quick to create
professional-looking 3D flying logos for use in multimedia presentations and
desktop video (the kind of stuff you see on the network news). Output can be
saved as QuickTime movies, PICT, PICS, or TIFF files, and it can automatically
generate alpha channel masks for use in programs like Adobe Premiere. It's
also a great introduction to the field of 3D modeling and animation.
This demo version of LogoMotion is a "fat binary", running at maximum speed on
both Power Macintoshes and 68k-based Macs (the commercial version comes as
separate 68k and Power Macintosh applications in the same box). The demo
version requires a 68020 or 68030 based Macintosh with a Floating Point Unit
(FPU), an RC68040 based Macintosh or a Power Macintosh. It also requires
System 7.0 or later, QuickTime 1.6.1 or later, 5 megabytes of available RAM
and about 2.5 megabytes of disk space. Adobe Type Manager 2.0 or later is
required if you want to convert Type 1 PostScript text to 3D.
This is a fully operational version of LogoMotion 1.5 with the Save, Export To
Infini-D, and Print features removed, and the ability to export only the first
30 frames of rendered animation (and only 30 frames total, per session). It
also includes with a small selection of StageHands -- pre-animated 3D objects,
cameras and lights, as well as great-looking background images and environment
maps, all of which can be easily incorporated into your 3D scene. LogoMotion
1.5 ships with over 100 StageHands.

The Wedding Stack is a HyperCard stack written to help keep track of
names, addresses, phone numbers, and all the hundreds of other bits of
information encountered when planning a wedding.
Better than a simple address book, this stack provides several helpful
features, including counts of the guest list, a separate section for
busineses, cross-referencing between guests and hotels, and the
ability to print four kinds of reports for finalizing the guest list,
writing invitations and thank-you notes, and sending out information

AV Power Macs have the interesting problem that you can't unconfigure
the second monitor. If an application puts a window there, you may
have a hard time getting it back. This FKEY solves the problem.
It simply moves the frontmost window to the top left corner of

need an fkey installer, resedit or a utility that allows you to use
fkeys without installing them.
FullWrite is one of the applications that gets bit by this bug which
is why we're providing this solution. FullWrite puts the spell check

Subject: [*] Zync version 1.0a4; a file synchronisation utilty
Zync is a file synchronization application designed for PowerBooks.
Its purpose is to copy files back and forth between your PowerBook and a
desktop
computer, but it can be used to synchronize files between any two hardisks or
computers on an AppleTalk network.
HISTORY:
*Version 1.0a2:
Compatible with AutoDoubler(TM) from Salient Software.
*Version 1.0a3:
The lenght of the local path name could get changed, causing the local
volume not to be found.
The remote server was almost never found.
Error messages have been added for a few possible server related errors
such as unknown user name, password, and server not found.
Command-Period stops the file copy at any time.
If the folder paths are not found, do not copy files to the desktop !
*Version 1.0a4
Zync remembers the last time and date when synchronization was done. This
is to prevent the application from copying a newer file over another file
which has also been modified. When Zync encounters files which have both
been modified, it tells you the file name and displays a dialog telling
you to look into the files and copy the good one yourself.
A new menu item called Reset Last Zync Time can be used to temporarily
override this feature. This can be used when you know for sure that the
latest version really has all the contents of the older but also modified
version.
A new menu item can be used to specify wheather files that have been
compressed should be copied in their compressed form. This can be used when
both computers use the compression software to speed up the copy process.
Zync can be distributed freely. Enjoy.

I am getting ready to drive about 60miles to trouble shoot some Mac
problems and thought that the collective wisdom of the Net could help.
Please do not ask me questions, for more info, or "is this and that is
installed." I am listing what I know now and will not know more untill I
get there.
Problem:
A company has created an ethernet network within there office. They are
using 950s mainly, all with buit in ethernet. They have linked all of
these 950s together useing Fallaron's Etherwave product. Whole setup is
rock solid. Take an 840av that is 100% Stable, add it to the netowrk.
Not only does the 840av now crash more often, but it causes massive
network prolems as well. The 950s start to crash, network data gets
corupted, etc.
I plan on checking to make sure that they have: System update 3.0, NSI
1.4.4 or later, and any other AV fixes that I know of. I have an 840 that
has no problems, so I can help them make their 840s more stable, no prob.
The question is why would putting it on the ethernet cause sooo many
problems? They have given up and are removing the 840avs, even willing to
do an even swap with anyone for a 950. I have NO expierence with the
EtherWave products, so any info will be of great use.

Subject: Audio CD sound out
I have a PM 7100 with an internal CD-ROM. The whole system sits next to a
conventional audio system and I'd like to be able to play my audio CDs on
the PM, routed to the stereo amp. Problem is, the strength of the signal
coming from the PM is quite weak (on the level of an old magnetic phono
cartridge) so I can't go into a conventional high-level audio input jack.
If I go into the phono jack on the amp or if I use an old audio preamp I
have hanging around here, I get the proper signal strength--but with
old-style RIAA equalization: the signal gets mis-equalized. In this setup,
I can't even tape from my audio CDs via the stereo amp, again because of
the frequency misequalization.
Are there any solutions to this mess? Self-powered speakers might work (I
do have a really cruddy pair of Radio Shack ones), but the signal still
remains outside of the stereo system. I'd prefer not to have to get an AV
card.
Thanx in advance for your help.

I've got a problem using Apple's Dart 1.5 on my Quadra 610 at work: it will

This Quadra is running System 7.1.1 (System 7 Pro). I've even tried

the same. Dart thinks that every disk is 800K.
My SE/30 at home, which is also using System 7.1.1, doesn't have this

System Enabler 040 v1.1 that the Quadra's using, or perhaps that the Quadra

The 'K' does stand for kilo, which means a thousand. The 680x0 series of
chips by Motorolla are often referred to as the 68000 family of
processors, which when spoken would be 'sixty-eight thousand family'.
Therefore, the K is an abbreviation for 'thousand' in a roundabout way.
It is now often used to differentiate this family of processors from
the new family of processors used in the Power Macs, as you said in your

Subject: Finder copies Adobe type 1 fonts very slowly [Q]
I have encountered the following problem a few times. Can anybody tell me
what causes it, and if there is something that can be done about it:
I have on my hard disk Adobe type 1 fonts that come from a Type On Call
CD-ROM.
When I copy these fonts to another volume (floppy disk or other hard disk)
using the finder, it takes a lot of time (about 5 minutes for 1 80k file!)
- it is actually faster to achive them with compact pro, and extract them
immediately to the destination volume than using the finder.
The progress bar from the finder shows most of this time "Reading " or "Writing ", "Writing " appear only very short, just like a
normal copy. According to the disk activity icon on the menu bar there is a
lot of work going on - including a lot of reading from the destination
volume when the finder shows "writing ".
First I thought that the Adobe Type Manager was doing some underwater
housekeeping, but the same problem appears when I startup from a clean
system floppy.
I do not think that somewhere my filesystem is corrupt, because checks
(Disk First Aid, Norton Utilities) do not show any problem, and copying
these Type 1 fonts on the same volume is just as fast as copying any other
file.
I this some weird kind of copy protection ? If so, how do they do it ? (The
only thing that only remotely resembles this comes from my TRS-80 days long
ago, when it took a lot of time to access a file if it had a record length
of 1 byte).

I am running MacPPP and while getting to the fully-operational
PPP state, I need to enter a password in response to a challenge.
This is done using an application (S/Key). However, while the
MacPPP program is getting to the operational state, no other
application can be launched, activated, or interacted with.
This means that I get a challenge and cannot execute the

Is there some magic mouse sequence or keyboard strokes that can
activate the S/Key application (it's sitting there, but won't

If it so happens that someone from Berkeley reads this, I'd really appreciate

So please, if anyone from Berkeley reads this, PLEASE answer me. I've been

Subject: Logitech 3-button mouse
There have been several inquiries about 3-button mice recently.
I tried out Logitech's MouseKey 1.2 on my Q610 the other day, using their
3-button mouse. Two problems with earlier versions appear to have been
addressed.
First, the mouse works OK with no extensions loaded on my Q610 running
7.1. Judging from the installation messages, this is accomplished by
installing a resource in the System file, so you must run the Installer,
and not just copy the control panel.
Second, shift (etc) keys have the desired effect on the middle and right
buttons. On earlier versions, this didn't work properly, which was a
problem with X servers.
All things considered, it's a nice mouse, and I use it in preference to
my Apple mouse. Running both mice is a little awkward, since there seems
to be some interaction between the stock mouse cdev and MouseKey, but
presumably this isn't a big deal unless you're trying to use MouseKey with
some other pointer (tablet, pen, whatever).

Subject: Mac Comm programs
I'm looking for a mac com program that my company's field-service and
marketing personell can use to install software on our units our int the
field.
Software installation takes place by downloading the software via the
unit's serial port. The Comm package we pick must have the following
characteristics:
1) Must run on powerbooks, and be able to keep up with 57.6K communications.
2) Must include a scripting language. Now, I need a good scripting language
for this, something on the order of what Microphone is capable of.
3) It would be nice if ththe script files were double-clickable. This is
so that our people can just plug the powerbook into our unit and
doubl-click to start the installation.
4) Must be reasonably quick. I personally find Microphone to be abismally
slow. Also, creation of scripts in Microphone is somewhat annoying to me.
(That is a relatively minor concern).
Please send all responses to me, and I'll put them all together and do one
collective post to info-mac.

I have a bizarre problem with MacPPP. I have MacTCP configured
correctly (rather well versed with that program, but not with MacPPP).
First MacPPP connects as soon as the mac is booted. Which I have
been told in not default. But I can not break it of this habbit. There are
No programs that are automaically running. MacTcp loads and that is the only
TCP/IP program that comes up. (heck Mosaic is the only networking program
loaded on the HD and it is not configured to start automatically.)
I would prefer for MacPPP to stay dorment till I run a network
program.
Second Access seems to be intermitent. Sometimes Mosiac can access
the hosts and other times not. Now I believe this might be from Mosaic
timming out because the connection is through 9600 baud modem. Sometimes
the host reply in enough time, others not...Any one know for sure? (or can
confirm my explainations?)
The system is a Powerbook 170 with internal modem (9600 baud).
Running system 7.1.1 (7pro), with 8M ram. Standard extensions...

Subject: Postscript printing error
My department recently installed an HP Laser Jet 4si MX. I and
several other people in the department have occasionally
experienced Postscript errors when using this printer. For me, the
Postscript error occurs whenever I try to print a MS Word document
containing a PICT created by SuperPaint. Typically the document
will print correctly until a page containing a PICT created by
SuperPaint is encountered. The page with the PICT is partially
printed, the following error message is printed on the top of the
page
ERROR: stackunderflow
OFFENDING COMMAND: exch
STACK:
and printing is aborted.
I do most of my work on an isolated Mac SE running System 6.0.8. I
am currently using MS Word version 4.0 and SuperPaint version 2.0.
I print from MS Word version 5.0 on a Mac II running System 7.1.
Does this sound like a problem with the printer or is the problem
caused by trying to print a PICT created by SuperPaint version 2.0
(System 7 compatibility checker flags this as being incompatible
with System 7) under System 7.1?

'Tis the season for inexplicable problems. I cannot get the serial
port on my PB 100 to function as one at all. Neither MacLink
connected to an HP 95 palmtop nor Versaterm connected to a direct
serial line into a Xyplex terminal server work at all. It gets
stranger. MacLink works *fine* to the HP 95 when hooked up to my
Classic II, and that Xyplex line works *fine* when hooked up to my PC
at work. To top it off, *Appletalk* works from the Powerbook (same
port).
I am beginning to think that I have zapped a serial controller(?). I
tried booting the PB from a generic System 7.1 boot floppy to
eliminate the possibility that some system extension is causing the
problem, but the problem persisted even when I was booted from that
floppy. Vital statistics: PB 100 8/40, running System 7.1 with the
3.0 hardware update (as of last night). I am not sure where to go
next. I wd. try reinstalling the system, but given the boot floppy
experiment, I think that is pointless. I fear my machine may need
service. Any ideas? Please respond by email, and I will summarize.
Thanks.

Subject: PowerPC 6100/CC:Mail/Plaintalk problems
I recently bacame owner of a PPC 8/160 non AV machine. After loading CC:mail
2.1, reading mail, and quitting cc:mail, I get crashes quite reliably when I
either (a) restart cc:mail (in which case the machine freezes altogether), or
(b) open, run, and then quit another application (at which time the machine
freezes or on occasion gives a type 1 error). The crash occurs whether I've
disabled extensions or not. I installed PPC enabler 1.02 thinking that would
help. It didn't.
Also, I found Plaintalk on the apple server (Gopher to info.hed.apple.com
/Apple
Support /Apple.Software.Updates / Supplemental.System.SW) and a plaintalk
microphone from MacMall (1-800-222-2808, about $29), but I find that when I
turn
on plaintalk and then turn it off, the system doesn't release the memory,
leaving me with a system heap of over six megs. I have to reboot to reclaim
it.
Any suggestions for addressing these problems would be much appreciated. If
there's a FAQ file somewhere, I'd appreciate pointers to it as well. I've noted
mention of memory management problems in MacWeek but haven't seen fixes yet.

Subject: Problem printing rotated MathType equations (Q)
So here is what I am doing.
1. Create an equation in MathType which uses the single vertical
bar from the fences popup menu.
2. Copy equation and paste into MacDraw.
3. Rotate equation counter-clockwise by 90 degrees.
4. Copy and paste rotated equation into a DeltaGraph graph
window
and use as a label for the vertical axis of an XY graph.
5. Copy and paste graph and rotated equation into a MS Word
document.
6. Print MS Word document to a Postscript file.
7. Transfer Postscript file to a Unix workstation and print to
Postscript printer. I use Strip fonts to remove the Apple
LaserWriter dictionary and any Postscript fonts available on
the printer.
My problem is that the single vertical bars in the rotated
equation do not print properly. They are shifted down on the page,
and are covering the character which immediately precedes the
fence and the last character inside the fence.
I looked at the Postscript code and it appears that the vertical
bars are not printed using a character from a font. Rather, they
are printed by drawing a line. I have not tried to print the non-
rotated equation in landscape mode.
Has anyone experienced this problem? If so, how did you solve the
problem?

No, I don't understand. And I don't know how to respond. As a rule of thumb,
I think virus writers are lower than snake shit. They hurt people. They make
the virus hunter/killers work extra hours. They make me divert to download
the latest SAM Defs file, install it on all "my" folks' computers, and scan
each of those folks' machines. The only viruses I've ever actually seen were

when no one is actually out to get you.
So what's the story with Mark Pilgrim? Is he or she really a CERT plant? Yes,
upon reading that he/she is the author of MBDF-A, I scanned my HD with SAM's
March 30 virus defs. Clean. Pain in the yums, Mark. But I don't trust you.
