Subject: [*] Anarchie 1.2.1; an Archie and FTP client

Anarchie is an FTP and Archie client. It will let you browse FTP
sites, download files, or find them using an archie server. It is
(IMO) the easiest way for users with MacTCP to fetch a file with a
partially known name or to browse around the anonymous FTP archives.
It includes a menu listing all the Archie servers, as well as FTP
bookmarks for all the popular Macintosh FTP sites (including around
40 mirrors to UMich and Info-Mac).

And as an added bonus, its Apple Scriptable and Recordable, and
the scripting allows you to fetch and store files to/from FTP
sites, so you can automate all sorts of routine FTP tasks. If you
have Frontier, it supports Menu Sharing as well (and comes with
a bunch of stuff from Leonard Rosenthol to get you started).

And for all you die-hard XferIt fans, it supports the Drag Manager
to allow you to drag files direct to/from Finder folders.

Changes since v1.2.0 are:
Bug fix for downloading some binary, non-MacBinary files.

Anarchie requires System 7, MacTCP, and is $10 shareware.

Hope you like it,
Peter.

Subject: [*] Auspice 3.4 -- Postcardware Reminder/Calendar Program

Sorry this is a wee bit late, but I finally got around to sending this update.
The big major bug in 3.3 has been eradicated (the loop problem) and a few
minor improvements have been packed in.

Auspice is quite a wonderful program, and was written by Wayne K. Meyers,
a heck of a fellow. Unlike other reminder programs, Auspice is postcardware.

Anyway, I am merely the messenger/transmitter of this program. Please
replace Auspice 3.3.

Description:

DragNDrop allows a scripter to easily implement dragging and dropping of
"objects" within a single window. This XFCN works in HyperCard and SuperCard.

DragNDrop is intended to be used within a single window.

All that the programmer needs to provide to the DragAndDrop routine is an
array
of objects that the current object can be dropped into. DragAndDrop will
take
care of tracking the object, hiliting the rectangles as they are passed
over,
and returning the object id that the object was dropped onto.

>From a scriptors end, the command looks like this:

put DragAndDrop( fromObjectID, toObjectID1, ... , toObjectIDN ) into
objectIDDroppedOn
- fromObjectID is the object that the user is dragging from.
- toObjectIDx are the objects that the user is dragging to. There may be
a
maximum of 15 objects to drag to.
- objectIDDroppedOn is the item descriptor that the user dropped on, or
empty if the user did not drop on any object.
- objectID's are in the form of "cd btn id 101" or "bg fld id 102". Do
not use
names of objects, or numbers of objects. Only ID's are acceptable.

What: "virtual" flying through the clouds
Hot points:
- simple virtual reality "thing"
- with the source
- *very* detailed explanation as to how to generate clouds and
render maps in 3D.
- includes the source for a small class library to handle color
Mac windows and draw images in off-screen GrafWorlds
Contents:
Readme - this file
Venus - Application itself
Venus.pi - project and resource files to build it
Venus.pi.rsrc - 'clut' resource
FractalMap.cc - generate a fractal map (clouds)
project_3D.cc - display a 3D moving projection of the map of clouds
display.cc - display an image in a Mac window
window.h \ my own private *very* simple MacApp: classlib for
SimpleWindow.cc / handling color Mac windows and offscreen GrafWorlds
The source code contains (too) many comments to show what
a particular piece of code does, as well as some tricks involved
Language: Symantec C++ 7.0.3 (previous versions might work, too)
System: System 7.x; tested on IIci, Quadras and Centres.
Note: the source code uses a "standard" environment, see myenv-notify.cpt,
which can be found at various archive sites under the name
'myenv-notify'. The source also uses graylib class library to
handle images, recently posted on comp.source.misc. However,
the library is not *very* used; one can easily get around without
it with only small modification of the code.

Subject: [*] FM-Pro Fantasy Fball V1.2; a database

This is the upgraded Binchfoot* Volume 1.2(as apposed to 1.1) the
easy-to-use Fantasy Football Database.

This update has SEVERAL additions that make for better and easier use of
the database. Binchfoot now allows you to enter weekly highlights and best
of all, it allows you to print current week point totals so you can compare
players' by the current week, not just by their yearly total. This will
aid you if you have your fantasy teams go head-to-head. Binchfoot* may add
functions that keep track of your head-to-head season if there is enough
demand from consumers in the future.

With Filemaker Pro 2.xx, Binchfoot* keeps track your individual fantasy
players. It does a great job of giving you printed reports on overall team
totals and individual leaders by position or point total.

Enclosed is a complete matrix of Macintoshes and Displays (both past and
present and near future) and what color depth is available in differing
configurations.

This grew out of the need for such a reference in the Computer Resource
Center at Dartmouth College (the pre-sales demo area). We found Apple's
matrix from AppleLink to be both hard to read and also quite wrong (we just
tested various configurations against the May version of Apple's Matrix and
found the Apple Matrix sadly wrong in *many* places.)

We believe this chart to be error free, but reality being what it is we do
encourage anyone to contact us if you do find a mistake.

Comments, suggestions, errors, and more can be sent to [email protected].

The chart used Helvetica and AppleGaramond. (The latter only in the credit

affected).

Hope this helps!

by [email protected]

This is an interactive game created in MacroMind Director 4.0.
This is Part 2 of PowerRangers v1.0. In this part, Green Ranger, Megazord
and King Sphinx are featured.
If you are expecting a commercial quality game of the SNES and Genesis
variety, this isn't it, but it *is* fun for the younger PowerRanger fans
out there. It is geared towards 4-9 year olds, and includes color graphics,
sound samples and special effects galore.

This game is self-running, all you need to do is click on the PowerRanger
icon to start it up. 4 megs of RAM and a color monitor is recommended.

This is my second attempt at creating a game using MacroMind, and was done
as a practice of sorts. It is not meant for sale or profit. It may be
uploaded to other BBS's and online services, but must include this Read Me
file.

Shutdown FX 2.0.1 is a fun little software package which will fade your

Subject: [*] SmallDesk; view the Desktop by different view options

Install this INIT in your extensions folder and restart to be able to
view your desktop by small icon, name, kind, or type. It is not
entirely practical, however, since System 7 forces the desktop to be
viewed by Icon on startup. This may cause your icons to be relocated
to places you don't want them to be. Also, this is a quick hack. It
has not been tested much (i.e. not for more than five minutes, and
only on a single Mac), so use it at your own risk.

This hack may be freely distributed as long as this documentation
file and the source are also included. Specifically it may be
included on CD ROMS such as the InfoMac CD, BBS in a Box, and

Subject: [*] Sound Utilities externals for HyperCard

Hi.

Here is _another_ update to my Sound Utilities externals for HyperCard--please
replace the previous archive with this one. One important thing I did was fix
a bug in the SPBRecordToHandleSync XCMD, which could cause crashes under
certain situations. This revealed itself on 500-series PowerBooks, but it
could have happened elsewhere as well.

Also, there are some new functions for controlling recording: you can now
programmatically select your input source and gain level, if your hardware
supports it.

Subject: [*] Sparkle 2.1 A mac-look-and-feel MPEG and QT player and converter.

This is a massive overhaul of your favorite MPEG program. The most
notable changes are
* Much faster playback---especially on 8bit screens. Fast playback
requires compromising image quality. If you don't like the compromises
I made, change them---look at Preferences under the Edit menu.
Don't worry---when you save an MPEG file as a different file, modes
are changed so that the file is saved at the best possible quality.
* Realtime playback, dropping frames if necessary. Also the MovieController
adjustable rate setting (control-click on the step buttons) now works
with MPEGs.
* Resizable windows.
* Conversion of a set of PICTs to a movie or MPEG.
* Intelligent window tiling, even with oversize windows and multiple
screens of different depths. To see this, open two or more movies at
once.
And literally hundreds of small changes all the way through the code.
Look through the menus, try the tab, shift-tab and control-tab keys,
and read the ``What's New in 2.1'' file for full details.
If you've suggested a feature to me in the past, it may well be
implemented in this release, though maybe not in the way you expected.
Try out whatever it was that you were hoping for and see if it works.

This version
* is not PPC native
* does not support sound
* does not support apple events
* does not support online help
These are all high priorities, pretty much in that order.

As always, if you find any bug or anomaly in this code please tell me.
The sooner you tell me, the sooner I'll fix it.
As always there remain a few rough edges to this program, though I hope
most of them won't be too distressing to users. Like previous rough
edges, they'll be done away with in time.

WHAT IS IT?
Sparkle plays MPEGs and QT movies and converts between them. It is
multifinder friendly and, with enough memory, will open multiple
documents at once.
It is free. I ask only that you read the enclosed README file and if you
can help with any of the issues I raise there, you mail me.

REQUIRES:
System 7 or greater.
QuickTime 1.6 or greater.
An 020 based mac or greater.
This version requires the Thread Manager.

Subject: America On Line Betas

Are others having problems using the Download Manager with TCP/IP
access of America On Line? When downloading, it seems like,
on occassion, the TCP/IP connection gets tired. It becomes slower
and slower until it stops completely. It's pretty repeatable.

The new version of AOL software (2.5f1) is even worse. It can't
seem to get the download started and it even hung my account. (I was
told that I was already on line when I attempted to reconnect and
had to call AOL tech support and ask them to bump me.)

I realize that this is beta software and we can't expect it to work
like production stuff, however the lack of response from AOL is absolutely
terrible. I've registered as a beta user, sent in reports on downloading
problems and tried to help out. Sadly, AOL has never bothered
to respond. It doesn't appear that they've tried to fix any of the
reported problems either. (Maybe I'm the only one with TCP problems?)

Looks like I may have to go back to 2400 baud modem transfers. Or
maybe I'll just quit AOL altogether. Too bad. It's a nice service--
they just need to learn that there are people out there who want to
hear from them--particularly on beta matters.

For XCMDs (and any DA, device driver or other code resource), you need

I have traced the problem to a conflict with Basic Black 1.2. BBEdit is fine

Subject: FAQ of the season--68 kilowhats, and where?

OK, so I was hoping to keep my ignorance hidden until I either figured
it out by context and logic or else someone else asked it first. Guess
it ain't gonna happen.

What is a 68K Mac? Other than a Mac predating a PowerMac, I mean?

There are PowerMacs and then there are the traditional ones that pre-
ceded them, which get referred to as 680x0 Macs, which I understand, and
also as 68K Macs, a term less obvious to me.

I presume it has something to do with the chip architecture, but I must
admit I haven't a clue. "K" usually refers to "Kilo-" something (byte?)
(hertz? parsec, for the luvva God?), but in this case what, and where
does my prePowerMac contain 64 of them? On the Motorola 680x0 chip?
And how many K's do PPC 601 chips contain in roughly the same place?
Or is the 601 a "K-less" chip? Etc..

I have tried using the ATALK version (where you can connect thru a

Anybody have any ideas?

Subject: software needed

Hello everyone
This is my first time writing for your assisstance. I use a Macintosh
LC520 and a 144LC SupraFax modem. I am a begginer and have been told
that I need the following two programs:
1. stuffit-expander-307.bin
2. Disinfectant 3.5.

Can someone help in locating these files and any others you think I
need. I possible please send them to me. I am also wanting to find out
if you know of a class on the internet where I could learn to use "gopher".
Please help and thank you very much in advance for your assistance.

Subject: Why is fax faster than data?

The modem is actually using two different transmission methods for fax
and data, so the encoding of those bits is very different.

The fax encodings were designed under the assumption that transmission
is one-way (perhaps with acknowledgements). This is technically
called "half-duplex" operation. In that transmission technique most
of the 3,000 Hz bandwidth of the telephone circuit is allocated to
that one way of transmission.

The data encodings were designed under the assumption that
transmission would proceed simultaneously in both directions
(full-duplex). In addition, the encodings were designed for older
signal-processing technologies; they split the available bandwidth in
half and then use some of it (relatively) inefficiently used, so one
got 2400 bps full-duplex data operation.

Current modems use more extensive signal-processing methods to sort
the outgoing signals from the incoming signals, thus doubling
available bandwidth, and then make better use of the bandwidth.

I don't believe there is a 28.8 fax standard; there may never be
one--28.8 performance would be very unusual over the typical
international voice circuit, regardless of the capabilities of the
modems. There is a 64Kbps ISDN fax standard, though.

If you use Word Finder Plus (a thesaurus control panel from Microlytics),
beware in System 7.1. Version 4.0.2 of WF+ causes aliases to remote
volumes to fail and the Finder to crash.
