Subject: [*] A La Carte 1.1; a menu utility

Hello!

A La Carte is a nifty menu utility which is designed to help you open
frequently used applications, documents, and folders. A La Carte places a
menu near the balloon help menu which you can access from any application.
>From the menu, you can launch an application with or without an attached
document, or bring a folder to the front in a Finder window. The power of
A La Carte is that it automatically keeps track of recently
used items, so that your most recent work is readily accessible.

A La Carte is a System 7 Control Panel Device which has several configuration
options, online help and balloon help. A La Carte has been tested
extensively on a variety of 680x0 based Macintoshes. A La Carte is
shareware, if you like this utility we ask that you pay $20.

We hope you like it!

DropQ 1.0.1 - Drag & Drop Utility for QuicKeys

This is a minor bug fix version from DropQ 1.0.

>

DropQ is a little application for QuicKeys. If you use QuicKeys, you know
it is very useful utility. You can execute a complicated operation with one
key stroke. But wait, before execution, you at
first open the file you want to process from your application. Have you
felt that this is a little annoying? I have felt. That is why I made the
DropQ.

Using DropQ is quite easy. When you drag and drop a file (or files) into
DropQ, it automatically launch the application you selected beforehand,
tells the application to open the file you droped, tells QuicKeys to
execute the sequence you selected beforehand, and after all files are
processed, the application and DropQ quits. You can drag and drop more than
one file at one time. All files are opened and processed one after another.
This is the most useful part of DropQ. For example, to convert many TIFF
format pictures to JPEG format pictures using Adobe Photoshop. DropQ can do
virtuaIly any thing. It is up to your idea.

The author of this program is Dietmar Tietz ([email protected]).
Please contact him for questions or suggestions.

ElphoFit 2.31 is freeware and was developed at the National Institutes of
Health, Bethesda, Maryland, USA.

ElphoFit is scientific computer software for the evaluation of electrophoretic
mobility data based on linear or nonlinear Ferguson plots [log(mobility)
vs. polymer concentration]. The program uses a Newton-Gauss
Marquardt-Levenberg curve-fitting algorithm and a mathematical
approach based on the "random space walk of a particle through a fiber
network" (extended Ogston model). The program allows one to
estimate particle- as well a polymer-specific parameters. Output is in
the format of tables (including statistical parameters) and graphics. The
program package provides samples of data, log and pict files as well as a
Read-me Introduction with references to published articles which
explain the underlying rationales and the operation of the program in
great detail. All references are available upon request from the
program author.

ElphoFit 2.31 has been used in application to proteins, small
and large DNA, viruses, conjugated vaccines and polystyrene particles
(used as size standards). Mobility data originating from ordinary,
capillary and Serwer-type 2-D agarose electrophoresis have been
evaluated.

I am the author of MolDisPro, Spectra available on your archive,
I am glad to introduct my new product LZSS-Res v2.0 which is a
shareware. It is a programming utility which allows programmers
to store resources more efficient and still fast. I got amazing
results when I tested it at first. The decompression speed was
as fast as 271kb/3ms on a Quadra and 271kb/9ms on a IIsi. I hope
everyone who has quite a big application, a game or a demo will
use my utlity which will save them and you a lot of disk space.
My product is not the first available of such kind, there are at
least two others I know: LZW Res and Comp-Res, but my compression
utility is revolutionary fast and much better. I tried to fix all
bugs I found, but I think there are quite a lot of them left.
I don't know, if you're a person who wrote a shareware game and
your application is to big you will use my utility to make it much
smaller. Hope you will enjoy it!

Subject: [*] Macintosh Models List

Dear Readers:
Here is an update to the Macintosh Models List (AKA Mac Facts II).

About this file:
This is the Macintosh Models List (AKA Mac Facts II). It is a list
of all the Apple Macintosh models, past, present, and future. The list
provides as much information on each model that can fit on two lines.
The attached Model List III has old Speedometer 3.11 speed ratings.
I am looking for someone to update and maintain ML III. I may just drop the
speed ratings soon (ML III).

Requested information:
1. If you see an underscore as an entry (not a dash), I am missing that
information. I would appreciate any corrections or additions.
2. What is the overall speed of the new macintoshes?

Two column format:
There are now two tables per model so that each model has two lines of
information. Note that I still stick to the 80 column wide format for easy
viewing on terminal screens. You may choose to print it out on Unix using
enscript -2rl or format it in a word processor as two columns so that the
lines match up.

Please email any corrections or additions to [email protected].

Maniac 2 Best Before Yesterday software release
by Alex Metcalf

24 July 1994

Best Before Yesterday proudly announces the release of Maniac 2, an
action packed arcade game which combines the mental agility of Hangman with
the arcade action of Pac Man to give an exciting race against the clock!

You guide Pac around the board (avoiding the ghosts, of course) in
pursuit of a spinning token. Catch the token to have a guess at the hangman
word: you can guess letters until you make a wrong guess, and then it's back
to the Pac Man game to catch another token. Complete the word, and you
complete the level! And so on to the next...

At any time you can exchange the dots you collect for one of the
many useful bonuses available: extra speed, invisibility, powers of
confusion, and more. You'll need them, because the four ghosts soon warm up
and make the job of collecting the token that little bit more difficult!

Featuring:

- Original Maniac soundtrack
- Multi-channel original sound effects
- Over 12 minutes of non-repeating game music in stereo surround sound
- Smooth, flicker-free animation in 256 colours
- Customisable background music by simply dropping MOD music files
into the Maniac Music folder

Requirements:

- 68020 Mac or better
- System 7.0 or later
- 640x480 screen (or larger)
- 256 colours/grays (or more)
- 2700k of free memory

Maniac 2 is compatible with both the AV Macs and the Power Macs.

Subject: [*] NewtCase 1.0; a Newton memory utility

NewtCase lets any MessagePad (Classic, MP100, MP110) user archive
his/her Newton applications to reduce heap memory requirements, alleviate
conflicts between applications, and clean up his/her Extras drawer.
Archived (or "NewtCased") packages do not show up in the Extras drawer,
but can be reinstalled at any time using NewtCase. With NewtCase, you
can temporarily deinstall applications without having to remove them from
your MessagePad. NewtCase can launch an archived package and, when you
quit from that package, automatically re-archive it. Using NewtCase, you
could keep a hundred applications on your 4 meg card without overflowing
your heap space or Extras drawer. NewtCase is shareware and can be
registered for $20 by mail, or on CompuServe (GO SWREG).

A list of new features follows:

You now launch packages from within NewtCase. Select either an
installed or archived package, and click on the "Run" button to launch
it. Launching a package automatically closes NewtCase to provide as much
free memory as possible. When you quit an archived package launched with
NewtCase, NewtCase will re-archive it.

Tap on the word "Extras" in the Extras Drawer button to launch
NewtCase.

If you Extras Drawer was full, QuickRun would have problems
launching archived packages. This has been fixed.

You can now file your archived packages in one of 7 categories:
Unfiled, Books, Communications, Games, Utilities, Applications and
Other. When viewing your list of archived packages, you can show any of
the groups, or "All Archives".

You can remove archived packages.
You can launch installed packages.
Lists show 8 packages instead of 6.
Fixed scrolling bug when deleting last item in a list.

Online Game, "Online Tic-Tac-Toe".

Here's the notice in the docs:

*** This is version 1.0.1 of Online Tic-Tac-Toe, by
Charles DeLauder and Kitty - Kat Software. This is
a maintenance release ... my definition of that is
a release that has changes made to the patcher, but
not to the actual program.

Version 1.0.1 has no actual changes in the game,
but some errors detected in the patcher have been
fixed. (These are graphical errors)

If you are using Online Tic-Tac-Toe v1.0, (I mean
you've already patched your settings) then don't
bother trying to re-update with this version. The
contents of the actual game is fine, and it will be
a-okay if you're users update their files using this
version.

Subject: [*] Private Pilot Written Test Study Stack

As you may know, Corwin Nichols wrote a very fine testing program to study
for the private pilot written test. It runs quite nicely on IBM PC compatible
computers. But not having ready access to one of those "evil" computers :-), I
wanted something for my Macintosh. So I wrote a Hypercard stack to make use of
the database that Corwin and friends prepared for his program. (FWIW: I passed
the written using it)

This stack is freeware. It was written using HyperCard 2.1. I have no
idea if it will run under other versions. It also uses a card size that is too
large for the compact Mac's (sorry to you folks stuck with such) but just right
for PowerBooks or Duo's. The stack contains Corwin's database in its
entirety.

Subject: [*] Quit It; automatically kills processes without windows

Enclosed is Quit It v1.2.3, which is a replacement of v1.2.2.
It contains a few small bugfixes.

A description of Quit It:
A Macintosh is very easy to use, but neverteless there are naive
users who don't understand anything about processes etc. All they
see is windows on the screen, and to stop working they just close
the window using the close box. But this leaves the application open,
which can lead to confusion on one side, and on a shortage of memory
on the other side. Quit It can take away this problem: whenever the
last window of an application is closed using the close box, it will
quit the application. That's all there is to it.

Remembery Chips is a delightful story for young children (and their parents)
of a child's discovery of a computer and how it works. The interactive Pixel
Book(TM) book (34 pages, with illustrations) is currently available as a
version that will run on most color Macintosh(TM) computers. The book is
recommended for young children ages 2-8, to be read with parents or older
siblings.

Remembery Chips features:

o an original text with beautiful color illustrations "hidden" under the pages;

o original sounds and music, with spoken phrases and words from the story;

o a unique interface, with on-line help for the first-time computer user;

o a picture gallery of the book's illustrations;

and much more.

The preview is a self-running application that requires a color Macintosh set
to 256 colors and with 2.5 meg free RAM. (Sorry, the demo won't run properly on
a monochrome Mac.)

Remembery Chips is available by mail from Wayward Fluffy Publications,
38 Sandy Ridge Road, Stoughton, MA 02072.

o $12 per copy of Remembery Chips for user group members and educators
(price does not include shipping, handling, and local tax).

I wrote this LAP while on my quest to port the Traceroute program to the
Macintosh. I 'grew up' on UNIX machines back in the mid-80's, and when I moved
over to doing TCP/IP programming on the Mac, I really missed Traceroute...
so here's the first part of it.

What does it do?:

What does this LAP do? Well, it is (I hope) an exact duplicate of Apple's
default Ethernet LAP with a few notable exceptions. First, this LAP
implementes loopback properly. (Although it still doesn't do 127.0.0.1,
but that can be added if enough people complain.) Second, this LAP
installs a Gestalt selector that allows application programs to perform Raw
IP writes and filter all incoming IP packets.

(The traceroute application will soon follow. Perhaps in a week.)

Subject: A PROBLEM with FILEMAKER PRO and Palatino FONT (Q)

Dear 'netters,
this time I need some help for a problem with FileMaker Pro. First of all...
----THE PROBLEM
I have created many databases with FM.P and in some of them i have serious
problems: PrintMonitor bombs when printing list of records, FM.P bombs when
refreshing some layouts.
With some euristics I have come to the convintion that the problem is
that FM.P. doesn't do a good job with the Palatino font family. Obviusly I
have reinstalled the whole family many times but the problem hasn't
disappeared. The fact is that if the layout doesn't use a Palatino font all
is OK but as long as FM.P meets a layout with a Palatino font in it then
problems start coming. I have tryed Palatino font family with many other
applications (e.g. Word, QuarkXPress,...) but they do not present any
similar problem.
----MY QUESTION
Has anyone of you met the same problem?
My convintion is that the problem is in FileMaker Pro and not in the
Palatino font family.
If you know the problem and (I hope) the solution, please, please send me a
small e-mail.
----THE CONFIGURATION
My configuration is:
- machine: MAC CLASSIC 4MB RAM
- system software: SYSTEM version 7.0
FINDER version 7.0
SYSTEM 7 TUNER version 1.1.1
- FileMaker: FILEMAKER PRO, VERSION 2.0Bv2
- fonts: TrueType Palatino font family (plain, bold, italic, boldItalic)
which was part of my new StyleWriter II's software; plus some bitmap
Palatino fonts (10, 12, 14) which were part of my Mac Classic's system
software (version 7.0).

Please if you can give some help to a "poor student", send me your reply
via e-mail at the address below. (I have no access to the news system)

From: Francis Knight
Subject: ClarisWorks: Do Sliding Objects need greasing?

Ok I said. Let's stop being a software snob, and have a go with
ClarisWorks. Version 1.03 is going for a song, and if I like it, I can
upgrade later.

Ah. This database module looks just the job for cataloguing my record
collection. I can create a field for every item of label information, so
I'll be able to find all the Shel Talmy productions in one go - a must for
me. I can create an abbreviated form for hard copies too - handy to take
with me to collectors' fairs. If I use the 'Slide Objects' feature, I can
cope with unpredictable Artists and Titles string lengths, and save paper.

I quickly discover the following differences between the CW manual's
representation of the world, and reality:

The 'Slide Objects' feature doesn't always work - it seemed to depend on
spacing left between the fields in Layout mode. That was before lunch. Now
one particular layout won't do it wherever I place fields!

Text fields themselves shrink to fit their contents in this mode (but
don't grow) - a bonus not made explicit in the manual, and infuriatingly
like a printing bug, until diagnosed. However, calculation fields don't,
even if their contents are purely text!

Text fields perform word wrap at their sides. However, calculation fields
don't, even if their contents are purely text!

When the 'Slide Objects' feature does work, the _record_ size remains the
same on paper, i.e. I'm just redistributing white space, not eliminating
it.

I'm disappointed to find frustrations at such a superficial level, with a
Claris product. Occasional rough edges in the manual, and a sort of
Microsofty presentation, gave an impression of eroding standards too.
Incidentaly, I sent in my registration months ago; I'd expected to have
been deluged by upgrade notices by now...

So, I'd be grateful if you CW users out there could tell me either:

It actually does work, but like this...

or
There's this workaround...

or
Yeah, it's a bummer, but Version 2.1 fixes all of it.
?

Otherwise, I guess I'll go clean the cobwebs off HyperCard.

print engine, as is Apple's Personal LaserWriter NTR. Does this mean that
I can use replacement toner cartridges for the NTR in my printer? I've had
it about 18 months now and have finally gone through the original cartridge.

Could we please not moralize so much? It is *really* unnessessary-
if someone asks how pirate software in a public forum enough, and
is actually pirating, they'll probably get caught. Personally, if
I were pirating, I wouldn't be posting to info mac for help... but
that is me. There are numerous reasons besides the one you mentioned
in your post for wanting to modify preexisting code in this way. What
if the original disks are damaged? Sure, send off for new ones. What
if you need that program today? What if that program is QuarkXPress,
who won't replace disks for (for example) people who lost their house
to natural disasters? Get off your soap box, please. Speaking of which,
I'll get off mine now.

I don't know how keyserver works, but my guess is if you are smart
enough, ResPatcher, ResEdit and maybe a hex editor shouild do the
trick, assuming you have both the patched program and whatever KeyServer
holds the removed code in.

We had a recent windfall of money and are planning to get larger fast hard
disks in the order of at least 500MB for Quadra 840 AV's. Unfortunately, I did
not follow the market and I am caught unprepared. A recent TidBITs article

the "Lightning" and "Maverick" line. The latest APS price list, however,
mentiones a Quantum "Empire" drive; where do I place the LPS and Pro drives? I
am confused by this proliferation of "subspecies".

What is your collective wisdom about speed and reliability of these and other

I noticed the recent praise for APS on this forum and the falling-from-grace

Howdy,

A while back I posted a note asking if it were possible to hook up a
headless Mac II with another Mac with ethernet cards via ethertalk.

Of all the responses I got, everybody said it was indeed possible with
the ethernet cards.

I also mentioned in my request about how the Mac II was going to be used
for a BBS. Most of the responses said that Timbuktu/Timbuktu Pro or
Autoboot were the programs most mentioned about controlling the Mac II
remotely. Keep It up was also mentioned as a viable solution as it is
supposed to be able to restart the computer in the event of a crash.

One other option was mentioned that I hadn't even given thought to, get a
nubus card with multiple serial ports on and thus extend out the ports.
This would enable the printer port to still be used as an appletalk port
and greatly enhance the number of ports used for phone lines.

Just wanted to thank all those who responded and to let the net know the
results of my request. It's nice to have a place to turn to when you
can't find the answer easily.

Seems macTCP v2.0.2 installs some SNMP extensions. Which must
broadcast as soon as the mac comes up that it is up and ready on the net.
Which causes MacPPP to dial.

So if you can live with out the SNMP extensions you can keep
MacPPP from dialing out.

Unless you run a SNMP dependant program, you can probably live

Hello dear reader,

Today I distributed NET_Mac2.3.43.sea.hqx...

For those who don't know NET/Mac... NET/Mac is the application that
supports TCP/IP over packet-radio, which means, that hamradio operators
can use NET/Mac for their wireless TCP/IP network...

In this version of NET/Mac I implemented the following:

- Fix for mods that prompt for username and password
- Some minor mods for the 'rdate' command
- The NET/Mac versionnumber will now be recorded to TRACE-files
- Align the output of 't s' for large-memory Macintoshes

This version obsoletes all versions of info-mac/comm/radio-net-mac in
the Sumex-Aim archives.

The new NET/Mac has (hopefully) been uploaded to:
ftp.ucsd.edu, to the directory hamradio/packet/tcpip/incoming.
If it's not there then look at hamradio/packet/tcpip/mac.

It may have also been uploaded to:
oak.oakland.edu, to the directory pub/hamradio/mac/digital

Yup. Sounds like we did not install our 'usual' NET.CFG which defines
2 'logical boards' (or protocol stacks) - one for Netware and another
for TCP/IP. Or perhaps more accurately, we did not install this NET.CFG
in the 'right' place given that we are loading SoftWindows' ETHERSPC.COM
(driver for the virtual ethernet board) from the NOVELL directory where
it was supplied by Insignia.

Chris can take care of this for you. I can clarify for Chris as needed.

However, if anyone else reading this has had any direct or indirect
experience with networking SoftWindows, we'd be glad to hear about
any tips or issues that others have had. Vice versa, if you know of
folks that are interested in this topic and want to leverage our
experience - so far there hasn't been anything 'tricky' but we
need to get DAL working before we can say for sure.

My understanding is that it was Jan95, but an apparent problem with the

What's the problem? Glad you asked.

When you took the SAT, you used a #2 pencil to fill in circles on a form.
That form was then fed into a scanner. The scanner had software that read
the information on the form and placed it into a database. There is the
software that creates the form with the circles and alignment marks, there
is the multipage scanning hardware where you give it a pile of papers and
one by one it scans them, and then there is the software that drives the

Does such a system/product exist for the macintosh?

using WAIS via think.com(?). That doesn't seem to work any more. Is there
an alternative source? Thanks.

It seems that if I have a document and an application (or alias of an
app) in my Startup Items folder, the app will launch first, even if I put
a space in front of the document's name. I would like the doc to open
first. What am I doing wrong? In general, how can I easily dictate the
order in which stuff in the Startup Items folder open? Thanks.

If the archive isn't fubar, it's macbinary. If you ftp to a host and then
download, send the 'binary' command before the get command. Then, when you
download to your Mac, make sure that the host's protocol is set for binary
(as in the case of Kermit where you have to tell BOTH ends) and your
Macware is looking for macbinary. If you transfer directly (with Fetch,
for example) it *should* do the macbinary for you.

I have a copy of IdeaLiner 3.4 that's dated 6/28/89 ('040 cache and 32-bit
compatible none-the-less). It *should* be out there in someone's archives
somewhere. I think my copy came on a HD I purchased from APS in 1991. If
Archie or Veronica can't find it, I'll have to rummage through my floppy
archives submit it.

And what about the upgrades from StuffIt Deluxe 3.0x to 3.5 (FAT)?

Thanks.

Subject: Stuffit expander 3.5 and DSEE retracted for a few days...

A couple of things you folks might want to know:

1) Aladdin has pulled its latest StuffIt Expander and DropStuff w/Expander
Enhancer from most sites. You probably should do the same. Here's the
official explanation, which you might want to include in the next Digest:

URGENT NOTICE Re Expander 3.5 and DSEE!
=======================================

Date: July 22, 1994

To: StuffIt Expander 3.5 and
DropStuff with Expander Enhancer 3.5 users

From: Aladdin Systems

Re: Don't Download 3.5 (because 3.5.1 is coming!)
Unexpected Expiration of 3.5 Software
Auto-Registration (not)

Dear User,

Swept up in the enthusiasm and zealousness to release the new StuffIt
Expander 3.5 and DropStuff with Expander Enhancer (DSEE), we screwed up.
In a nutshell, the release versions of these utilities will expire on
August 16. In addition, the auto-registration feature of DSEE isn't
working properly. By the end of July, however, we will be posting 3.5.1
versions which will resolve these issues.

Some of you may be aware that Aladdin Systems posted Public Beta
versions of StuffIt Expander 3.5 and the new DropStuff with Expander
Enhancer shareware. To ensure these Public Beta versions wouldn't stick
around too long after the final versions shipped, we instructed both
StuffIt Expander 3.5 and DSEE to delete themselves on August 16, 1994.

Unfortunately, we neglected to remove the self-destructing code in the
release versions. This means that the versions you have downloaded will
unexpectedly expire on August 16.

Also, owners of StuffIt Deluxe, StuffIt SpaceSaver, and SITcomm should
never see a "This is shareware, please register" message when using DSEE
(owners of these Aladdin products do not need to send in a shareware
registration fee for DSEE). During installation, DSEE should register
itself and disable the shareware messages, but apparently does not
always do so in version 3.5.

Versions 3.5.1 of StuffIt Expander and DSEE will be released by the end
of July and will address these problems.

We at Aladdin apologize for the oversight, and we hope it doesn't cause
too much inconvenience or anxiety.

We also thank you for downloading StuffIt Expander and DSEE in the first
place, and implore you to re-download versions 3.5.1 when they are
posted.

And, of course, thank you for supporting freeware and shareware!

Yours Humbly,

The Team at Aladdin

Is there any known problems with Syquest 3.5 " 270 MB drives? My girl-

I know I should ask questions of the Info-Amiga list, but I thought it
would also be useful to ask if there are problems with those drives
generically).

Subject: System 6.0.8L (summary)

I recently asked for help in locating System 6.0.8L on the net for
use in my Classic II. This is to help anyone else who has the same problem.

Although one person at least thought that it would be on one of the
Apple sites this is not so. System 6.0.8 is available, but not the modified
version with the L designation which is specifically for the Classic II,
LCII and Powerbook 100. I think this should be rectified by the guys at
Cupertino, or Austin?

Anyway, thanks to Bob Knowlden I located a Gopher site which still
has this system available.

This is a small Gopher-only site run from his own machine by Mark
Dohm at the University of Wisconsin. He only has five connections available
at any one time, so he asks you to be patient if you cannot make a
connection immediately.

The address is

System 6.0.8L "start-up" and "additions" disks are in the
"software" directory.

Thanks to everyone who replied, and especially to Mark Dohm for
providing such a valuable service.

Greetings,
I have an LC475 that I would like to upgrade to something with an FPU.
I've heard of a rather expensive upgrade to put a full 68040 in it, but I
would think that the upcoming PowerPC upgrade card would give me something
with an FPU and be much faster to boot. Any recommendations?

Thanks,

Subject: Video Capture on the PPC

What is the deal on the video capture on the PPC? We were using a board
to do video capture called "Movie Movie" (I think). But when we got the
PPC we thought everything would be included. Well, think again. I guess
you need some kind of RCA to eight-inch adapter to get any kind of audio
signal at all. Also, it doesn't come with the software you need. You need
to order the "QuickTime Starter Kit". So, get this, we ended up putting
our "Movie Movie" board from our old machine into our PPC. Kinda silly
huh? Oh, this is the PPC/AV. AV stands for Audio-Visual RIGHT??? This
really ticks me off. IT used to be that Apple machines were easy to set
up, and included everything you needed to get started. Even a programming
environment (HyperCard) came with machines so that you could do something
productive with the machine right away. So it seems to me that PPC/AV should
come with all the adapters you need and at least some simple software
for capturing Video images.

Anyway the questions are:

1. I have QuickTime, and an application called Simple Player, will that work?
2. I have this "Movie, Movie" application, but will that only talk to
the board that came with it or will it work with the PPC built in video input?

HEY APPLE, ARE YOU LISTENING? SO FAR I REALLY HAVE BEEN FRUSTRATED WITH THE
PPC. SOME SIMPLE CHANGES WOULD BE NICE.

I have a daughter at a college that uses MS Weird as the "standard" word
processor. When I set up her LC III, I found out right away why I wouldn't
use Weird myself--it's overfeatured and consequently it's bloated.

I DO NOT recommend Word 5.1a on a 4 MB Mac (just try and print :-) I'd
already ordered RAM expansion for my daughter (my own preferences include
enough optional System tools to make 8 MB my personal minimum RAM
requirement), but it wasn't delivered for several weeks. We found that
turning on virtual and setting memory to 5 MB resulted in satisfactory
performance until her RAM expansion module could be installed.
