"Classic Manger" StartUp Sound

The "Classic Manger" StartUp Sound is a soothing intro to your Mac for the
Holiday season based on the last line of the carol "Away In A Manger." It
is orchestrated by an eloquently-plucked classical guitar that is backed by
a virtual chorus that crescendos perfectly at the conclusion of the sound.

The "Classic Manger" sound is one of many from the Clixsounds "Holiday
Series" of freeware sounds and can be downloaded from here or the
Clixsounds Web site. It is available in both stereo and mono versions.

The Clixsounds Web Site is at:

Subject: [*] BBEdit extensions 2 for MacPerl

I've written a BBEdit tool that works with MacPerl to allow Perl scripts to
act as text filters on text selected in a BBEdit window (BBEdit tools can
only be used with BBEdit, not BBEdit Lite). I've also updated the four
BBEdit extensions I previously distributed that facilitate using BBEdit
(and BBEdit Lite) as an external editor for MacPerl. The extensions and
tool are freeware.

Descriptions of the extensions and tool are available on my BBEdit
extensions web page:

http://members.aol.com/bradh5/bbedit_extensions.html

With one exception, the only change to these extensions from the ones
previously released is that the extensions will attempt to launch MacPerl
if it is not running (this new feature only works with BBEdit, not BBEdit
Lite). The exception is the "Run MacPerl Front" extension. Previous
versions of the Run MacPerl Front extension should be replaced with this
new version.

Subject: [*] Christmas'96, annual christmas card/jigsaw puzzle

Christmas '96

Fourth annual release of the Christmas jigsaw puzzle.

In 1993, I released Christmas'93, the first color jigsaw puzzle for the
Mac. Christmas'95 was much improved over the two first versions. What you
get now is the most user customizable jigsaw puzzle available (as far as I
can tell)! And, it is free for personal user during christmas, and
otherwise exceptionally cheap shareware (3 games for $15)!

You can choose the puzzle image, puzzle shapes, background pattern, end of
game sound, music and end of game animation you like. You can either choose
>From the enclosed files, or you can paste in your own pictures and sounds.
Grab that drawing program, QuickCam, microphone, QuickTake or scanner and
make your own puzzle!

And that's not all! You are permitted and even encouraged to spread
modified copies to your friends. (There are some conditions, i.e. that it
must still be clear that the program is Christmas'96, that it is made by
me, and that it has been modified, and you must virus check it before
passing it on.) Commercial use (i.e. marketing) is permitted, but for a
fee.

With the previous release, Christmas'95, many more sample files and two
utility programs, PpatReader and Pict2Pict, were included. They have been
removed to reduce the size of the archive. Look for them in the 1995
distribution if you miss them.

System requirements:
- Christmas'96 works on any Mac, in any screen depth, but 640x480 pixels in
thousands of colors are recommended. You may have to give the program more
memory (in "Get Info" in the Finder) or use smaller pictures when using
very large screens.
- Music requires 68020.
- The game may get slow on old Macs, like the LC. You may have to use fewer
pieces and turn off music to get acceptable performance. (The LC is too
slow for the 140 pieces shape file.) - Works nicely (native) on PowerMacs.
(It was mostly developed on a 6100/60.)

Merry Christmas!

/Ingemar Ragnemalm

Subject: [*] ClickPad II 2.2.1

This is ClickPad II version 2.2.1, Copyright (c) 1996 Dan Wright. ClickPad
II is shareware (US$14) - see enclosed "Read Me" for details.

ClickPad II requires a PowerBook with a TrackPad; specifically, the
PowerBook 520, 540, and 5300 families are supported. You can now just tap
the TrackPad to click the mouse button, double-tap to double-click, or
tap-drag to lock the button down for dragging.

Features New or Improved in ClickPad II:
* ClickPad II is more responsive during heavy trackpad usage and "dozes"
when you stop using the trackpad to reduce CPU & power usage (and so
allowing your PowerBook to sleep).
* You can now "lock" the trackpad button down, allowing drags and menu
selections without using the (physical) trackpad button. Way cool.
* ClickPad II provides optional audio feedback.

New in version 2.2[.1]: a revised interface with balloon help, support for
Internet Config, the TrackPad button can now lock/unlock, bug fixes,
sliders for configuring ClickPad II to conform to your clicking habits --
and more.

Dave's Kaleidoscope Extras 1.3.1

Dave's Kaleidoscope Extras is a set resources for Kaleidoscope.
Kaleidoscope is a shareware control panel by Greg Landweber and friends.
Included in Dave's Kaleidoscope Extras are four original color schemes, a
desktop pattern, desktop PICT and a couple of other goodies. The color
schemes included are called Kronos, Lake Road, Mercury and Mondrian. Kronos
is a graphite colored hi-tech scheme. This scheme is similar to Eclipse but
was made more "Hi-Tech" like by adding "Hi-Tech" titlebar buttons, scroll
arrows, scroll thumbs and recolored menus based on screenshots of the
"Hi-Tech" MacOS 8 theme. Mercury is a silver colored scheme with lots of
nice shiny buttons. Lake Road is a dark forest green scheme for that
outdoorsie look. Mondrian, inspired by the De Stijl artist of the same
name, is a grey scheme that uses primary red yellow and blue for buttons.
Version 1.3.1of Dave's Kaliedoscope Extras is a bug fix release.

FileTyper is a popular and powerful shareware type/creator and file
attribute editor, including batch and filtering capabilities and a very
fast file manipulation engine. It also includes MakeAutoTyper, a utility
that creates and edits customized "AutoTypers", tiny drop-boxes that have
become widely used in the Macintosh community over the past few years.

Version 5 is a long-awaited major upgrade that adds multifiltering
AutoTypers, date editors, and an improved user interface.

Update 5.0.1 makes minor improvements on some non-U.S. system
configurations. It is still localized to U.S. English, but works a little
better under certain other language systems.

Squish is a quick-thinking puzzle game in roughly the same genre as
Lemmings. You must safely guide the hero, a rubber-gel ball with eyes,
through each level to the exit by using blocks, fans, springs, teleporters,
cannons and lifts to send it in the right direction. It's harder than it
sounds and a lot more fun to watch. Sharp reflexes, logical foresight and a
bit of patience are recommended.

recognition software. These scripts are designed to run under the basic,
minimal AppleScript/PlainTalk setup. To use these scripts you will need:

-PowerPC with 24+ MB RAM preferred

-16-bit audio

-The microphone included with most Macs, or other sound input device

-PlainTalk 1.5 speech recognition software

-System 7.5 or later (Scriptable Finder and AppleScript 1.1)

More info and latest versions are provided at:

http://www-leland.stanford.edu/~dmiller ... peech.html

The software is provided free for your use. If you find this software
useful, consider donating some time, energy, money, or equipment to a local
special education program or try, in some way, to make technology more
accessible to humans.

You can distribute this software, but you must distribute it for free,
unmodified, and you must include the ReadMe file. Contact me first before
distributing these scripts in connection with any product, CD-ROM, book,
on-line service or any other kind of commercial or mass distribution.

New in this version are new and improved scripts for accessing recent
applications,
documents and servers, for managing mounted volumes, and for accessing open
Finder windows and applications.

Subject: [*] Yacc 1.9.2

Yacc 1.9.2 for CodeWarrior is based largely on Berkeley Yacc 1.9 and was
converted to the Metrowerks CodeWarrior IDE by Jeff Laing. Code generation
was modified specifically for CodeWarrior and a number of the more obscure
"syntax error" type errors that Berkeley Yacc produces have been enhanced
to provide more information.

Version 1.9.2 was recompiled with CW9 and version 4 of the plugin API and
adds the following features:
* the prototype for getenv() should no longer cause a problem
* detailed output now includes a cross reference of all symbols.

and corrects the following bugs:
* the 68K compiler should no longer lock up.

This plugin is not free, nor is it in the public domain. It comes with the
hefty shareware fee of 15 US Dollars (if you pay via Kagi) or 15 Australian
Dollars (if you pay directly by cash or cheque on an Australian bank).

Permission is explicity given for this software to be included on
compilation CD-ROM's and other collections provided that Tristero Computer
Systems receive a fully registered copy of the disk it appears on.
Metrowerks have explicit permission to include this software on all
CodeWarrior releases.

My wife used Toolbook with success. Toolbook is no where near as easy as
HyperCard but she was able to ultimately make it act like the hypercard
product. Painful but doable.

Will be way nice when HyperCard 3.0 comes out. Turns Hypercard stacks into
a Quicktime document and you can run Quicktime files on windoze and unix
(and Mac) without any conversion (or at least that is the plan).

If you do not use XCMDs your odds of going cross platform are pretty good.
If you use XCMDs ...

I've tried to get this particular file about 10 or so times...I would greatly
appreciate any suggestions and/or help that you might give me..Thanks a

I've been pretty happy with Quicken, and I've also seen many comment in a
positive way on Quickbooks Pro. Both of these, by the way, are supported by
my bank (Wells Fargo) and allow me to download my account info from their
web site in a Quicken file. Pretty convenient, and it keeps me from having
to balance my checkbook!

This (not to mention the regular trashing of directory structures) is
the price you pay for using such a shabby kludge. Clearly written by
people unfamiliar with the concept of shame.

It is "free". But then so's a thrashing by a drunken biker.

Pages you visit, and the graphics on them, are stored [cached] in your
cache folder, so the next time you visit the page, Netscape can save a bit
of time by loading that giant animated gif from your local cache folder
instead of over the net.

In your Netscape preferences, you will find a setting for the size of your
disk cache. Your cache folder is maintained at that size [sort of]. Say
your cache size setting is at 5 Mb; you have 4.95Mb stored there already,
and you hit a page that requires 1 Mb of cache space. You'll see that
"deleting xx cache files" message as Netscape clears out 1Mb of old cache
files to make room for new ones.

There's no reason for you to [routinely] manually clear that folder. It
will save disk space, but Netscape will just start filling it up again when
you next run it. Clearing the cache may also slow browsing, since
everything will now need to be retrieved over the net instead of from local
cache.

If you really don't like having those files there, you can set Netscape's
cache to a smaller number in the prefs. This will lower the amount of disk
space occupied by your cache, but will slow browsing somewhat.

There are times when you may want to manually clear your cache:

1. You're having some sort of problem that won't let you get the current
version of some page; say you go to www.macintouch.com, and keep getting
the October 10th news. Clearing the cache will force Netscape to fetch the
newest files from the server. You can accomplish this on a page-by-page
basis by option-clicking the "reload" button. This will clear the cache
for that specific page, rather then flushing everything.

That's the only one I can think of right now.

Another cache tidbit. Let's look at my Netscape cache folder. I've got my
cache size set to 5Mb. If I get info on my cache folder, it reports: : 4.7
MB on disk (2,276,322 bytes used), for 449 items. Lots of wasted space
there because of the allocation block size of my 500Mb disk. If I put the
cache folder on a shrinkwrap image or a RAM disk, I could get more
efficient caching. Basically, what those figures above say is that my
cache folder is close to 5Mb in size, but only 2.2Mb of that is real data.
The rest is wasted space.

Subject: PaperPort Scanner on Macs: As Lousy As I Think It Is?

When the PaperPort scanner for the Mac first came out a year or two ago, I
went out of my way to post an enthusiastic review of it. At this point I
think I want to withdraw this, on the grounds that their Mac software
quality is unacceptably lousy. I see a few other messages on the net
supporting this, and wonder if others have the same experience.

Primary gripe: their Mac software just seems to be slow, buggy, and creates
conflicts with other programs. I've noted little problems all along, but
the motivation for this message is that a few months ago I bought two Vx's
with SCSI interfaces and installed them on a PowerMac 6100 and 7100. Both
worked fine, for a month or two.

Then, for no known reasons -- no significant hardware or software changes
to either system -- the 7100 began refusing to boot in any way shape or
form with the SCSI adaptor connected; no amount of fiddling with cables or
terminations or reinstalling software seems able to fix it. The 6100, on
the other hand, can no longer see the SCSI connector; everything else in
the system works fine, utilities show everything else on the SCSI chain
just fine, but the PaperPort connector just isn't there.

I'll refrain from posting my entire laundry list of other little problems
and annoyances with these gadgets, but high on the list are:

* The "WYSIWYG" text annotations which are clearly visible on screen but
which get cut off in printing if you use certain fonts or font sizes
(Visioneer doesn't want to admit that this happens);

* The "Registration code" you're supposed to call up and get, whose only
purpose is to force you to answer a bunch of marketing survey questions
before they give it to you;

* The serial number confusion, where the PaperPort itself, its serial
software, and its SCSI software all have different serial numbers -- and
God help you if you happen to want to transfer one PaperPort to another
machine for temporary use.

* The web site users group, where you can post questions and sometimes
even get them answered -- but they absolutely refuse to email the answer
directly to you as well, even though they collect your email address.

As a calibration, on a whole variety of Mac systems over the past several
years I've upgraded through at least 3 generations of Global Village modems
and accompanying fax and telecom software, and not had 1/10 the headaches
I've had with PaperPorts.

Bottom line: A neat little gadget, clever idea, stylish design, and, to be
fair, pretty helpful response when you call their (non-800) support line --
but still, Mac software just too lousy to continue dealing with.

The 6116CD is NOT one of the models that have problems; the 6116CD is

Has anyone had problems setting up the internal modem that comes with the

redialing the computer keeps telling me there is a problem with the

At 3:03 PM +0000 12/23/96, M. Winter wrote:
>Is there a way to connect a PC modem to a Mac?

If this is the fully self-contained 28.8 external modem [the v34X or
somesuch], then there's no reason I know of why you couldn't hook it to a
Mac. You'll just need a Mac-to-Modem [8-pin -> 25-pin]
hardware-handshaking cable. These are widely available at computer stores
in the states for around $10.

I have one of these modems, and the Manual I got in my "Mac-specific" box
is actually geared more toward PCs [it lists all the jumper settings for
the internal version]; but the actual modem commands and so forth are
platform-independent.

If you use OT/PPP, there's a modem script included that will configure
OT/PPP for use with the ZOOM, so you don't need any special software
whatsoever. If you use FreePPP, you should be able accept all defaults
without trouble.

For FAX software, any of the third-party offerings should work; my modem
came with FAXcilitate, and I have tried FAXstf, which worked as well.

Now, you may have on of ZOOM's PC-specific external modems, which move some
of the error-correction and so forth up to the host in the form of Windows
programs. You won't be able to use this modem with a Mac, at least not to
its full potential.

You may want to check ZOOM's website for more details

I just checked there, and it appears that currently ZOOM only offers one
external 28.8 modem in the UK, the v34XE, which works on both PCs and Macs.
So, I think you're in fine shape.
