Subject: [*] Briscola 1.1
What is Briscola ?
Briscola 1.1 is a card game for Macintosh and PowerMacintosh. This
game is well known in Italy as briscola, but is known as atout for
French people and as trump for English ones. The briscola is the suit
of the card which lies below the pack. Sometimes somebody considers
briscola that card. Any card whose suit is briscola, should be kept
jealously to get as more as opponent's points. The aim is to get more
than 60 points, half of 120 available points. You have to face your
opponent 20 times.
Briscola 1.1 requirements
- System 7.0.
- RAM: 1500 KB available for Briscola.
- Color QuickDraw.
- any processor, 680x0 or PowerPC.
What's new in 1.1 ?
- card's background color and pattern changed.
- table background changed.
- better card corners.
- ancient white cards.
- added Trevisan cards.
- bigger cards.
- hand cursor while dragging cards.
- recompiled with Metrowerks Codewarrior 10.

Subject: [*] CopyPaste 3.2.1
Highly recommended! CopyPaste is an incredibly addictive
and practical utility. This is the latest version of the
multiple clipboard utility.
Question: What are the two things that all Mac users do all the time?
Answer: Copy and Paste. Our focus has been improving that activity.
One of the many things that made the Mac stand out was
its revolutionary ability to do copy and paste across various
applications. Now this ability is commonplace but unlike
other areas in the Mac's system and software that have
changed and progressed over the years, copy and paste has
not evolved. How many times have you found yourself going
back and forth copying in one application and pasting in a
different application, wishing to yourself that you could
copy 5-10 items at a time, then go to another application
and paste each of these items.
CopyPaste gives this ability and much more. Its really
useful! CopyPaste is a must have piece of shareware for all
editors, writers and everyone that uses the clipboard.
CopyPaste gives your Mac 10 clipboards, clipboard
processing, application switching, tag and drop, the ability
to save all clipboards thru restarts, and many other
features. Its a simple to use utility thats available in
every application. You find yourself using it all the time
and wondering why apple didn't include it in the OS.
**** MacUser Macintosh Shareware Utility of the Year 1996 ****
***** America Online Macintosh Utilities Award Winner 96 *****
CopyPaste has been featured in MacWeek, MacUser, MacSense,
MacHome, Computer Currents, MacToday, MacLife Japan, MacUser
Japan, MacPower, Networks, Gazapee, MacWelt, MacUp,

around the world.
CopyPaste can be tried out for 30 days free before paying
the shareware fee. The shareware fee is $20. Site Licenses
are available (100 users license costs only $500) and we now
take credit cards.

Subject: [*] Excalibur 2.3.1 - Spelling Checker
Excalibur is a Macintosh spelling checker for LaTeX documents. You can
optionally turn off LaTeX parsing, so Excalibur is a good plain text
spelling checker too.
Features include:
- Excalibur will offer suggestions for how to correct a word.
- Excalibur can spell check the clipboard. This makes it a good
spelling checker for any text based application such as Alpha, BBEdit,
or Eudora.
- You will need System 6.0.5 or higher to run Excalibur. It will run
on any Macintosh from a Mac Plus on up.
- Excalibur is free.
- British, Dutch, French, German, Italian and Spanish dictionaries are
also available. You can get these from ftp.eg.bucknell.edu in
pub/mac/Excalibur-dictionaries.
- It runs in native mode on a PowerPC. This is a fat binary.
- For more information, visit the Excalibur home page:
http://www.eg.bucknell.edu/~excalibr/excalibur.html
Version 2.3.1 new features:
- Added some conformance to Apple's Grayscale Appearance.
- If you ask Excalibur to remember which dictionaries are currently
active, it checks to see if the file or an alias to it is in its
folder. If not, it will remind you that it won't be able to find the
dictionary the next time you launch the program.
Bugs fixed:
- Suggestions are much faster.
- Fixed a bug that caused Excalibur to squeeze blanks out of words in
the Change To: box.
- Fix a problem with Excalibur not being able to recognize characters
in the extended character set on systems that use a non Roman script.

Subject: [*] MacMultiMeter v1.0
When I went out and got the Radio Shack Digital Multi-meter with
so-called PC Data Interface I was a little annoyed that it didn't come
with a Macintosh client, only DOS and Windows. It took me a little while
but I finally got this out the door. MacMultiMeter is an application that
allows you to hook up your Radio Shack Multi-meter to your Macintosh and
record data. The main interface looks like the physical meter. Push the
buttons on the computerized meter with the mouse and they operate just
like the buttons on the meter on your desk.
What you might find handy is that MacMultiMeter is AppleScriptable. I
imagine you could hook the meter up to your Macintosh, hook the meter's
leads to something you find interesting (that hopefully has some sort of
electrical properties) and write a file using AppleScript commands. You
could then use this data anyway you want. Put it on the Web, in a
spreadsheet, email it, whatever. That's your job. You will be able to
find the latest version of this program at
The meter this software works with is Cat No 22-168A. This file contains
both a 68k and a PPC native version of the software.

Subject: [*] OT/PPP Toggle 2.0.3 - Open or Close the PPP Connection with Ope
OT/PPP Toggle 2.0.3 toggles the state of the PPP connection using Open
Transport PPP. If it's closed, it opens it using the currently active
configuration as set in the PPP control panel. If it's already open, it
closes it. Using the Auto-Open feature, it can also open any application
or file you want once the connection is made. Just click on it in a
launcher or select it from the Apple menu and it opens or closes the
connection. It uses less than 10kb on disk and 200K of RAM (and only
when actually opening or closing a connection). It's FREEWARE (See the
Read Me for details).
System Requirements:
OT/PPP Toggle requires any Macintosh computer with the following minimum
software:
System 7.5.5 or later
AppleScript 1.1 or later
Open Transport 1.1.1 or later
Open Transport PPP 1.0 *
* Open Transport PPP (OT/PPP) also installs the "PPP Commands" addition
to AppleScript, which is required for this application to function.
OT/PPP Toggle should work with any of the beta versions of OT/PPP that
include the AppleScript additions as well as the final version.
Recent Version History:
2.0.3 - Bug fix - if the PPP Control Panel was closed when you tried to
close the connection it tried to reconnect as soon as it closed the
connection.
2.0.2 - Closes PPP Control Panel when closing connection if it is open.
2.0.1 - Now OT/PPP Toggle 2.0.3 Setup can choose any file for Auto-Open.
2.0 - Complete re-write. Faster, easier to set up (setup application),
unlimited retries (redialing dropped because it is supported in OT/PPP
itself). PPP Control Panel opening now an option.

I mapped my Logitech ADB mouse under MacOS to have the "=" key on the

the same), the pop-up dialog appears on the upper left corner of the

activate the upper menu bar instead of making a return (command always

Yeah, the fellow who originally had the problem responded to me privately
that his clock, etc. were fine, so he didn't think it was the battery. Now
that he's told me that, I doubt it's the battery, as well. Note my cunning
use of the word "virtually" in my original response.
So I'm stumped. I've never seen this sort of thing before. I've seen
strange behavior after a single crash, but the persistent behavior he
describes is new to me.
I guess I'd try:
-zapping pram
-disabling extensions
-installing a new system on another disk to see if the problem is software
or hardware-related

There is another possible explanation for this Appletalk behavior. In the
third "new in this update" readme file for 7.5.5, there is a statement that
7.5.5 fixes an incompatibility between Assistant Toolbox and Open Transport.
Assistant Toolbox is useful only for Powerbook users (according to one
blurb I read -- it has been a while since this happened to me). Somehow, I
managed to get an earlier version installed on my PMac 7100. Then when I
was "cleaning up" after the recommended clean install/then update scheme
for 7.5.5, I put the old version back in the system folder. (The current
installer is intelligent enough not to put the new version on a desktop
machine.)
I spent the better part of a week trying to figure out why my wife's
machine always came up with Appletalk off. Trashing the totally useless (to
me) Assistant Toolbox solved my problem.

Subject: FAQ - Plaintalk 1.4.1 fixes Audio CD volume problem
Dear Digest readers,
Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems that upgrading Plaintalk to version
1.4.1 fixes an age old bug in the system software whereby the sound out is
default at mute for the Monitors and Sound control panel and the Audio CD
Player is default at medium volume. I had already upgraded to System
7.5.5 a couple months ago, and now finally found Plaintalk 1.4.1 in the
"English-text-to-speach"
file at ftp.info.apple.com. With that Plaintalk upgrade all of a sudden
these volume defaults that were a nuisance seem to have been eradicated.
Why isn't this upgrade included in 7.5.5? It seems so logical to fix the
bug with the system upgrade, why hadn't Apple had the foresight to realize
that it should be included?
Well in any case, now I can load an audio-CD and not have to open the Apple
CD Audio Player in order to hear it in full volume. I don't even have to
open the Monitors and Sound control panel.
Hope this helps.

Netscape 2.0.2 has a default memory allocation of 3 meg. We use this
older version at work with our 8 meg LCIIIs for just the reason you
mention.

Within my system folder-preferences-Netscape pref-cache, is a looong list

deleted (tossed into trash) every so often. While running Netscape, I often
see a message at the bottom that xx cache files are being thrown out. Is
this enough or should I get rid of the ones in the system folder?

Subject: OS Strategy at Apple? (oxymoron?)
January 1995--Hey cool, what Apple is going to put out is a multi-
threaded OS with the halfway decent beginnings of memory protection and
our extensions and control panels will run in their own space and not be
allowed to crash the system through naughty behavior and lots more code
(nearly all of the important parts) will be PowerPC native and our Macs
will HUM! Expected to be released by the end of the year, a few months
after Microsoft's much-touted Windows 4.0 (which by now is being renamed
Windows95). All our Control Panels and Extensions will have to be re-
written but the idea of modifying the user experience will remain intact.
May 1995--Copland, the next-generation OS, has been postponed cuz
Apple needs to make sure that it will run on PowerPC Platform boxes
when they are released; might be as late as fall of 1996.
December 1995--Apple is sending signals that Copland, most likely to
be named MacOS 8.0 in its official version, is being delayed because
of the need to consider the internet and integrate it properly into the
OS.
July 1996--Apple CEO Amelio sez to heck with big fancy OS releases, what
Apple is gonna do instead is put out constant little incremental releases
that will gradually add up to MacOS 8 before you know it. Uh huh. I got
Aaron. When do I download the OSMultitasking Extension and the PowerPC
NativeCode System Update, not to mention the NuFileSystem Extension that
finally gets the contents of my hard drive up into RAM in a time space
appropriate to my processor? No one knows. But more doohickeys of less
impressive proportions will keep rolling down the net turnpike while we
wait. And rumor sez the new OS is gonna run Intel binaries without the
need for SoftWindows or OrangePC. Just what I always wanted. Access and
Quattro Pro. What about NetBEUI so I can network with those damn PCs
and share files with them instead?
September 1996--Overwhelming public sentiment interprets the "incremental
release" bulletin of last summer as meaning "Don't hold your breath in
anticipation of Copland, that turkey's dead." Mac mags like MacUser and
MacWorld stop trying to put a positive spin on it and start suggesting
that maybe Apple should graft the MacOS interface onto a modern under-
lying system like AIX (looks good on the new Apple servers) or BeOS (it
has no apps yet and is still in its infancy but it cooks) or even NT
(yeah its Microsoft but with a Mac interface? and no legacy DOS stuff?).
November 1996--Hey, it's gonna be BE! Damn near heard it from the horse's
mouth! All that's left is the haggling about how much Gassee gets paid
to sell his OS to Apple. Despite the fact that it doesn't look or feel
very Mac-like and isn't Mac-compatible, stick a Mac interface in front of
it, write a System 7 emulator for legacy progs, and assume the migration of
QuickTime, AppleTalk, etc. (No one says whether or not Be will run multi-
ple monitors like System 7 but we all hear it can run multiple processors
symmetrically. Undeniably that would be cool. But a maximum of 2?
Late December 1996--Hey, it AIN'T gonna be BE! Instead, Apple will buy
NeXTstep from Steve Jobs. That's the guy who ran Apple back in the days
of System 3 (remember when you shut down and it tossed out your floppy
and immediately gave you a disk icon with blinking question mark until you
popped another bootdisk in? No messages about how it's safe to shut down
your Mac now? Yeah, THAT system). Well, system 3 WAS pretty darn stable
and never crashed except in the presence of a few awfully abusive software
packages. I think Stevie might have been around for system 4 too, which
gave us the first notice that we could turn off our Macs safely and also
supported Switcher, which some say was not the first Mac multitasking sol-
ution but it's still the one we remember. (Remember how the app windows
would slide left or right, like the app you left behind is still running
just to the left of your monitor?). So...Steve Jobs and NeXTstep for our
newfangled OS? Well, it runs on x86's and a few other chips, why not ours
too? Of course, it has no apps, but it is a more finished product than the
BeOS, yes?
Anticipated announcement early February 1997--MacWeek's 'Mac the Knife'
is first with the news that soon floods the Mac community: Apple has
bought out the rights to an operating system that does multitasking, is
notably stable and gets a lot of mileage from available processor strength,
incredibly potent on multimedia, showing power with movies and sound apps,
is already being ported to the PowerPC chip anyway, and unlike BeOS and
NeXTstep already has a respectable number of native applications as well
as solid MacOS emulation strategies in place. Yes, you guessed it...the
secret is out! Apple buys the Amiga OS!
Does anyone besides me wonder how close Apple ever came to having a Copland?
If they hadn't changed lanes so often in transit? What the hell HAPPENED
over there in Cupertino? I know they didn't forget how to code! This is
PATHETIC! I still want the "look and feel" of the Mac system. I don't
know about the rest of y'all but if Apple foists upon me something that
works and thinks and looks and feels and behaves in new and totally different
ways and calls it "Mac", I will not regard it as Mac and I'll be uninclined
to be loyal to it as such. (OK, all things being equal I'll choose a non-
Wintel solution because I don't like monopolies). (Or Windows). Still...
I want a desktop that behaves like a desktop. I want multiple monitors
that are treated like a Mac treats multiple monitors. I want files and
folders that copy and move when I drag them with accustomed Mac protocols.
I want my menus overhead where they belong and certainly not all stuffed
inside one universal hierarchical menu. I want at least the option of non-
sticky traditional Mac "pop-down" menus! I want my disks to eject them-
selves without external button-pushing. I want my computer to be able to
boot itself at predetermined times. And even if it means rewriting them all
for the new OS I want Control Panels and Extensions or something of the sort;
if I can't customize the heck out of it it isn't MY computer! Do I also want
stability? Hell yes, I'm sick of "Crashintosh". Do I want a mature file
system? Oh my god yes, I'm disgusted that a 486 PC can access and load
things from a hard disk faster than my PowerMac. But the other day I had
Netscape busy, one of its many plug-ins slurping down a QuickTime movie,
and in the background I formatted a floppy disk (using Disk Charmer),
compressed a file (with DropStuff), copied the compressed file to the disk
and ejected it, wrote a letter, and sent it, then watched the movie that
had finished loading. We're not that far off from functional multitasking
if subjective impressions count. (formatting that floppy while doing three
other things was convincing, even if the Thread Manager is limited in what it
can do. so...fix it!). I want my Mac. If I wanted a BeBox or a NextStep
or a Unix box or an NT workstation or god help me an Amiga Id've bought one.
C'mon Apple. DO something. But make it a Mac thing that you do.

I ran the Virtual Memory installer 1.0, but that did not solve my

Moreover, I can't get virtual memory to run either. If I drop

There is an article in the January 97 issue of MacAddict magazine titled
"RAM-Sucking Navigator" (pg. 25). The article basically is a guide to
using Navigator 3.0 in only 5MB of memory. At the end of the article,
they state, "If 5MB is still too rich for your blood, Navigator 2.0.2
runs happily in 3MB, and it's still available from Netscape's sites."
To get Navigator (2.0.2 or 3.0) to run with these smaller memory
settings, they say to not use the email or Usenet news features within
Navigator. Use dedicated programs like Eudora and NewsWatcher for email
and Usenet news. Also, don't use any plug-ins except the Default
Plug-In.
They also suggest using either the Mac's Virtual Memory or Connectix's
RAM Doubler. They say this will let Navigator use it's memory more
intelligently, especially when running under System 7.5 or later. I'm
not a big fan of either the Mac's Virtual Memory or RAM Doubler so I'm
not convinced this is really a good thing or not.
They then say to set Navigator 3.0's minimum and preferred memory size
to 5,120K in the programs Get Info window (3,072K for Navigator 2.0.2).
The Finder will complain that this setting is too low; just go ahead and
click O.K.
If you're using Navigator 3.0, turn off both Java and JavaScript under
the Languages tab in Navigator's Network Preferences (Navigator 2.0.2
doesn't support Java but does support JavaScript. I haven't used
Navigator 2.0.2 in a while so I can't remember if there is an option to
turn JavaScript off but I would think so).
I haven't tried this myself so this may or may not work for you but it's
probably worth a shot.

Japan, MacPower, Networks, Gazapee, MacWelt, MacUp,
MacMagazin, c't and many other publications and web sites
around the world.

Faster, easier to set up (setup application),
unlimited retries (redialing dropped because it is supported in OT/PPP
itself). PPP Control Panel opening now an option.

activate the upper menu bar instead of making a return (command always

Sincerely,

Subject: Norton Speed Disk
I am having problems with Norton Utilities v3.2 running on a Performa
6400/180. I had updated to 3.2 in hope that the problem would be corrected
, but it persists. I am trying to do a full optimize with Speed Disk, after
starting up with the disk which I made with Disk Builder the screen is
blank and nothing else happens. I have to do a restart to get out of this
fix. Is any one else having a problem like this? Any ideas as to what is
wrong? Merry Christmas to all.

And even if it means rewriting them all
for the new OS I want Control Panels and Extensions or something of the sort;
if I can't customize the heck out of it it isn't MY computer!

Happy Holidays...
I've been a loyal reader of this digest for the past few months and just
wanted to say THANK-YOU for everyones input, I've learned alot.
THANK-YOU also to the volunteers who run this digest, you're time and
effort is much appreciated!
I have a question that's been bothering me for awhile and I was hoping
someone might have some info on the subject...
I bought a Performa 6116CD back in March and since then I've read
numerous times that the Performa is a lemon. Does anyone know the reason
it's being considered a lemon? This is my first computer, well second
actually, if you want to count my old relic Franklin 64k :^) so I can't
really compare the performance of my Performa (say that 10 times real
fast) with anything else.
Thanks for your time,
Laura

Try . You'll have to fill out
a form verifying that you're a US citizen then they'll email you a
password that you can take back to the form and get the software. Have fun.

Subject: Q: HELP! Zoom PC modem on Mac
Hi all,
thanks to you all for helping with my last request - and I can't believe it but
I already have
another one ...
Being the season of Christmas and all alone in a foreign country (Britain) I
wanted to treat
myself to a faxmodem to stay in contact with the rest of a quite extended
family. And when a
Zoom 28.8 external modem was offered for just 49.95 pound here in Edinburgh I
went and got
one. Joy to the world ... until I realised I can't connect it to my Mac! Utter
doom! Is there a way
to connect a PC modem to a Mac? (The woman in the AppleCenter said "No, I've
tried it." -
do/can I trust her?)
TIA and Merry Christmas to all at InfoMac (excellent work!!)

Subject: RamDoubler 2.0 and Dove Marathon Accelerator
I have a problem installing RamDoubler 2.0 on a Mac II running with
a Dove Marathon II 030 accelerator board under system 7.1.
I ran the Virtual Memory installer 1.0, but that did not solve my
problem. RamDoubler seems to install all right. The system comes up with
the message, "Connectix RamDoubler 2 installed," but then I get a "bus
error."
Moreover, I can't get virtual memory to run either. If I drop
Ramdoubler from my control panel and turn on VM, the computer also hangs
up--but no message about a bus error.
Any ideas?

I'm using Think C version 5.o0 (real old) and things were working fine
on an old Mac IIci. But when I switched to a Mac LC 575. I could not get
the debugger to work. Instead of got an instruction violation.
Is there an updater to Think version 5 so I can run the software on a

Infomac used to have the updaters but I can no longer find them for
anything earlier than 6.0
