Subject: [*] VSamp 1.5.0

VSamp is a long-awaited program that turns the Macintosh into an OMS and
Sound Manager compatible multitimbral sample playback module. Configured
like a simple sampler, VSamp can be setup to playback on 16 MIDI
channels with up to 16 samples per channel, mapped and enveloped to
user-defined configurations. This can then be driven by an
OMS-compatible sequencer, or the included application 'OMS Thru' running
on the same computer.

Without registration, this program will stop playing a loaded bank after
about four minutes from when the bank is loaded. The bank can be
restarted with a single command. See the included registration document
on how to obtain a fully operational version.

System Requirements
* Best with 040 or Powermac and 16-bit sound.
* OMS 2.0 or later (from ftp.opcode.com or www.opcode.com)
* Sound Manager 3.1 or later strongly recommended.
* An OMS compatible sequencer or the included application 'OMS Thru'.

WebTondeuse is an application designed to produce graphical views of
HTML webs and to enable you to retrieve groups of related HTML files in
one single operation. A complete site can then be downloaded for
off-line viewing. WebTondeuse is also able to 'swizzle' the HTML anchors
it finds, so that the off-line version of what you have downloaded is
self-contained.

System Requirements:
Sun Java JDK 1.0.2. , System 7, a PPC class machine

MS addressed this bug which is a conflict between WORD 6.X for the Power
Mac and QuickDraw GX. Their solution (and it works for me) is an extension
housed in the stuffed file entitled mc1164. You can find it on their server

Instead of a modified font, why don't you take a look at SeqVu 1.1 -- $10
shareware from the Garvan Institute in Australia:

SeqVu will take text files of your sequences and decorate them with the
little boxes and lines. The image can then be saved as a PICT to open with
your favorite drawing program (I like ClarsiWorks). These PICT files are
*huge*! Every residue has a little box around it with several little lines,
so they add up fast. Version 1.0 was a dog (it crashed ruthlessly), but 1.1
is much, much better.

Good luck,
Clint

Subject: Connecting to Now Public Event Servers via TCP/IP

I am frustrated in my attempts to talk to someone at Now Software who will
help with TCP/IP connectivity for Now Contact and Now Up-to-Date. I have
two problems I would like to solicit comments on from other similar users.
I have tried to get an escalated response from Now since before
Thanksgiving, have been promised return calls twice, and have heard
nothing.

(1) Now Contact Public Server is running on a IIfx. Any 680x0 client that
attempts to connect to it via TCP/IP on the local LAN causes an immediate
crash (type 10 or 1). Some PPC clients can connect via TCP/IP/LAN, others
simply can't bring it online. 680x0 clients cannot bring it online via
dialup Internet. PPC clients can. Similar problems occur if the Event
Server is running on a 6100. All clients can connect flawlessly via
Appletalk.

(2) Now Up-to-Date Public Server is running on the same machine. All
clients that try to connect via TCP/IP fail to bring the server online
except one 6100 which is running on a static IP address. All clients can
connect and update flawlessly via dialup Internet access.

The only client which seems to behave across the board is the 6100 which,
along with the IIfx, is running the Ethernet option in TCP/IP to allow a
static IP address.

Please comment if you are *successfully* updating clients across TCP/IP -
NOT Appletalk.

Subject: creeping system software?

hi all,

my 8500's system software memory requirements have been acting kinda weird
(running 7.5.5, 40MB with ram doubler, 2GB). when i start the machine up in the
morning (or restart at any time) the requirements are around 7500K. by the end
of the day the requirments have gone up to about 8500K, and stay there. using
Mac OS Purge helps somewhat, but not totally.

by keeping a log of how my most-used applications affect the system software, i
was able to narrow the memory hogs to (not word, surprisingly) netscape (v3)
and
internet explorer (v2.1). each of these applications makes the system software
memory requirements jump by about 1000K, and neither of them reallocate memory
when i quit out of them. a colleague of mine who has an 8100 with 64MB says his
system software requirements usually stay between the mid-6000s and mid-7000s--
and he designs and maintains web pages, so his use of netscape and other web
tools is quite intensive.

obviously this is not a serious problem, but over the course of a day--
especially one that is web intensive--it can get in the way.

any ideas would be appreciated; i'll summarize for you all.

thanks!

Subject: Info-Mac Digest V14 #290

Hello All,
I recently got an FWB SCSI JackHammer Fast/Wide HardDrive Accelerator Board
and am about to install it and a new drive into my 7100av. This card adds a
second SCSI bus.

Problem is that, once I remove the old drive and attach the new drive to the
board's bus, I'll leave the old SCSI bus unterminated internally. The old bus
will still be used for the internal CD-ROM Drive and various external pieces.

The manual suggests that I accomplish the termination by "placing a 50-pin
IDC terminator plug onto the ribbon cable's connector, or by installing the
terminating resistors onto the CD-ROM drive." I have written to FWB twice
about this and was told "Yes" I do not need the terminator and "No" I do need
it -- in other words the answers were confusing and conflicting.

I do have a couple old hard drives sitting around from which I could
extricate the old terminating resistors, but, frankly, the thought of trying
to install them correctly onto the CD-ROM scares me silly. On the other hand
I have had no success whatsoever in finding the ribbon cable connector.

Anyone have any suggestions or advice or encouragement. Expertise welcome.

Also, I'm told that the board (which is SCSI 2) would work equally well on an
Ultra Wide SCSI 3 drive (which I have ordered).

Thanks folks,

Try unpluging the HD power cabel and booting off the CD, after you have
reached the desktop replug the HD power cable and try to format the
drive. (this worked for me)

- The next one you need to have a friend with a MAC as well.... -

If this does not work you could hook the drive up as a slave to your
friends HD and try to format it that way...

Subject: Norton, Rebuilding Desktops &c.

Norton, Rebuilding Desktops, and all that stuff

After reading several problems that have occurred since Volume 14, Issue 275,
I feel compelled to drop my two bits in about a few items of great importance.

1. Norton Utilities and System 7.5.3 or greater

Versions of Norton Utilities earlier than version 3.2.1 have *serious*
problems with systems using software equal to or greater than System 7.5.3. A
prime example is running Norton 3.1.2 on my PowerMac 7200/120 at home and it
reporting back to me that my disk "was so badly damaged that the data should
be copied off and the drive reformatted."

It was at that point that I realized I had an older copy of Norton on my Zip
disk, and I ran MacTools 4.0.3, which found serious problems, but was able to
resolve them quite nicely, thank you very much. This is a good reason why
MacTools is an *essential* in my toolbox. If anyone from Symantec reads these
boards, get the hint -- MacTools is still an essential and it does stuff that
Norton doesn't do. We plan to buy more once they become commercially available
again.

2. Rebuilding the Desktop

Rebuilding the desktop when you're having problems is generally good advice.
However, using the option-command keyboard combo at startup does not
completely rebuild the desktop. To quote from MicroMat's read me for TechTool:

"Rebuilding the desktop is often necessary when documents fail to launch after
double-clicking, or when custom icons are unexpectedly replaced with generic
document or application icons. The traditional method of holding the option
and command keys before the Finder loads will force the invisible desktop file
to "rebuild" itself. This is not completely effective if the original desktop
file was corrupted, since rebuilding will only yield an updated desktop file
which is still damaged.

"TechTool provides a better solution to rebuilding the desktop. It actually
deletes the original Desktop database(s). The next time the Finder loads, it
will create a brand new Desktop file."

TechTool is IMHO an Essential, and best of all, it's FREE! You can find it in
the Info-Mac archives.

Even if you can't afford to buy MacTools (or can't find it), or if you have
MacTools but not Norton, it's extremely important that you make sure you're
using the *latest* version. The operating system changes recently have caused
problems with older version.

Hope this diatribe has helped. I realize it seems anal-retentive (probably is)
but I also run Disk Tools once again after running all of the above "just to
be sure".

Good luck.

Subject: PCI Cards; compatibility?

I have a PCI Macintosh and get real excited when I see all those
PCI video cards, Ethernet cards, etc. at my local computer store
in the PC section. I get especially excited when I see, e.g.,
a video card for $39.

My instinct and experience tell me that I can't take one of
these PCI cards for PCs home, plug it into my Macintosh,
and see it work. Probably a driver or something is missing.

Am I right? Or are there some PCI-for-PC cards that will work
out-of-the-box on a PCI Macintosh? Comments? Success stories?

Joram,

Here's some info on a "platemaker."

It's called Photospot, and it's offered by a company called Second Glance
Software. Their phone# is 360-692-3694.

It operates as a plugin for Photoshop; after indexing the image to however
many colors you need, Photospot exports each different color as a separate
plate into a separate file. These are then printed directly from Photoshop,
or placed in a layout program (Quark, Freehand, etc.) for printing to film
seps.

This software has a great advantage over Streamline; accuracy. Streamline,
even in best-case scenarios, alters an image because of sloppy tracing. It
may look cool sometimes, but that 'curvy-jaggy' look isn't always called
for. Photoshop's indexing is dead-on accurate, and also has less risk of
limitcheck printing errors, which happen to me with Streamline on occasion.

A screen printer friend of mine has been using it professionally for two
years now, with designs up to 14 colors, with Photoshop 2.5.1 and Freehand
4.0. A very stable piece of software in his experience.

Hope this helps!

Hello all,

I'm exploring the possibilities of Portshare Pro (Stalker Software) to
connect my LC475 to my PB150, which does have a Global Village PowerPort
Platinum internal modem.

It works fine, but - I can't use my internet-connection! PPP on the LC does
recognize the modem, but can't send AT-commands to it (or whatsoever). I'm
puzzled. I copied all necessairy files to the systemfolder of the LC:

- PPP (extensions folder)
- Internet Config Extension (extensions folder)
- MacTCP DNR (system folder)
- MacTCP (control panels)
- ConfigPPP (control panels)

I even tried the Global Village Toolbox, GlobalFax - but no cure.

I really like the idea of using my PowerBook modem, right off my LC. Does
anybody have any ideas about this ?

Subject: PowerMac won't boot anymore

Argh! Help! My Mac has decided it won't work for me anymore! 8-)
This is what happened: While formatting a floppy disk, the Mac
all of a sudden froze. When I hit the reset button the Mac
began the startup sequence as usual, but right in the middle
of it, the Mac froze again. I tried reseting a few times but
it was never able to completely start up. Moreover, the point
at which it froze was never the same. Sometimes it would freeze
right at the start, sometimes later in the sequence, but it was
never able to completely come up (it never got to the point where
the menubar appeared). Most of the time it froze very early,
before even the happy Mac icon appeared or even before the
corners of the desktop pattern are rounded. Holding the shift key
down didn't do anything and booting with the Disk Tools disk
didn't help, either.

At that point, I gave up for the day and tried again the next day.
Indeed, the computer did start up when I turned it on and I
immediately ran Norton disk doctor on the hard disk since I
suspected that it had been damaged somehow. However, while it was
checking the hierarchies, the Mac froze again and I was not able
to get it back up again, just as the day before.

In the summer, I had installed some SIMMs myself. Since then, we
have moved from the States to Germany. Here, the computer has
worked well so far, but now I began to suspect a hardware error.
I opened the computer and removed the SIMMs thinking that maybe
they have become loose. When I turned the computer back on, it
did in fact start up ok, but again I didn't get very far after
that. Very soon, the Mac froze again.

Well, I am running out of ideas now. Does anybody have any
suggestions what I could try next? The Mac in question is a
PowerMac 7100/66 running System 7.5 Update 2.0.

Thanks in advance for any help,

One thing that can help alleviate such a difficult repair. After completing
a clean install, boot from a floppy. Duplicate the system folder. In such
an event, you can try just replacing the System file and Finder by copying
them over from the duplicate folder. This has saved me more than once.

I have been told that there is a web site that has this program and that one
can down load the encryption software. Can anyone point me to that site?

Subject: Problem with URL-Manager Pro..Systems Hangs

I seem to have a problem with netscape 2.02 ever since I installed URL
Manager Pro 1.4b18. My machine which is a 6100/66/16mb running OT 1.1, and
OT PPP either :

1.hangs while I'm using netscape OR
2. All windows seem to close, and then the system hangs.

I've never run across this problem before, and was wondering if anyone else
seems to be having the same problem. If so, are thier any fixes. Should I be
using URL manager Pro (non-beta) instead..?

regards

Robert
