As another data point, I occasionally get the "funny ASCII mistakes" on
Info-Mac entries. It does not happen often and I have not tried to find
any pattern. I am presently using Eudora Pro 3.0 (only started recently so
I'm not 100% sure if I've seen this under 3.0) and previously used the
current version of Eudora Light.

Subject: [A] LC III and external CD-ROM problem

Dear Scott:

Sorry to tell you, but the problem is that there is no path in the SCSI
cable for the Audio Data to get to your mac (multimedia CD's work
fine because the sound uses a diufferent path), this is from the
Apple Technical Library). I do not know if this will work on your Mac,
go to the sound control panel, go to the 'sound in' screen, if you can
use the 'optiona' button, click on it and then choose 'playthough cd'
If the the option is grayed out, you are out of luck. I have a
Centris 610 and this issued was discussed a few months back.

The solution is to use headphones or external speakers.

Sincerely,

Romulo Romero

I'm trying to help a friend with who received an LC 575 as a gift. The hard
drive claims to be locked (it even shows a lock icon in the upper left of
the window). I didn't know you could lock a hard drive without some kind of
security program. I finally managed to get it to startup from the CD drive
and could find no evidence of any security/disk locking program. I ran Disk
First Aid which says the drive needs to be repaired -- but, of course, it
can't repair a locked drive. She's willing to erase the drive and reformat
but it won't let us do that either. What can I do?

I have just upgraded to system 7.5.5 (started with 7.5.2, upgraded to
7.5.3, then to 7.5.5), on my Performa 6200. When I try to run the
energy saver control panel (version 2.0.1), it says that either the
energy saver extension was not loaded at startup, or that my machine
does not support the energy saver control panel. Symbionts (a very
excellent utility by the way-heaps better than extensions manager :)
says that the energy saver extension is loaded, and using 12,624bytes
of my precious RAM. I know that the energy saver (2.0.x) control panel
is supported on my mac (it has soft power-on, and besides, I read that
it does on the Apple TIL). So what is the problem?? I want to be able
to tell my mac when to turn on. Is there any other utility I can use
to do the same thing?

Thanks to you all in advance.... Please reply to me by Email, as well
as to the whole group.

MIcrosoft Internet Explorer will open AVI files. It will even convert them

It means that you have selected a network connection method [EtherNet,
TokenRing, etc.] but a driver for that type of connection does not exist.

Here's a way to generate the error on purpose [this assumes you have an
real Ethernet connection available, and that you're running classic
networking]:

1. In the "Network" control panel, select "Ethernet". Close the control
panel.

2. Open the Extensions folder, and drag "EtherTalk Phase 2" to the desktop.

3. Restart your machine. On startup, the error message above will appear.

So, check to make sure you have the correct drivers for your desired
network connection. Apparently, you're selecting something like "Ethernet"
for your network, but pieces of the Ethernet driver software have been
disabled.

A change in the Metrowerks compiler had the side-effect of introducing a
bug in the Emailer->Eudora conversion module of MailConverter 2.2.2.
MailConverter 2.2.3 will be available very soon, maybe later today, but in
the meantime I would recommend that you not use 2.2.2 for this particular
conversion. Earlier releases of MailConverter should be ok for Emailer
conversion, and other sorts of conversions should be ok with 2.2.2

If you desperately need to convert Emailer folders and you want to

The fact that you get Frutiger onscreen and Courier at the printer shows
that the EPS in being imported and printed correctly.

What you're seeing on the screen is the PICT preview, which was built by
Illustrator. So, you get Frutiger there.

When you print to a PostScript printer, however, that preview is ignored,
and the actual PostScript data is sent to the printer. Apparently, that
printer doesn't know what Frutiger is, so you get Courier.

Is the printing happening from a different machine than the one used to
create the graphics? If so, install Frutiger on that machine, and you
should be fine.

It could be that FileMaker doesn't know enough to send along fonts that are
needed for embedded EPS's, in which case you'll need to download Frutiger
to the printer's disk [if it has one] or memory.

If FileMaker is in fact failing to send fonts which are only found inside
EPS, another option would be to include a field on the layout which
contains a single space in Frutiger. This should make FileMaker send
Frutiger along with the job. This won't work under QuickDrawGX, however.

Subject: Funky printing with new Eudora Lite 3.0

I use an Imagewriter printer to print email messages and digest lists. I
have found with the new Eudora Lite 3.0 that these items will not print
correctly at all. There will be 3-4 inches of space at the bottom of each
page, and messages will not continue on the next page, but a new message
will start. I never had problems printing with previous versions of Eudora
before, including 1.5.5, so I am wondering what could be causing this.
Reinstalling Eudora did not help; I am using the most recent Imagewriter
extension available and have also checked all Page Setup options carefully,
as well as paper size (which for myself never changes). I am temporarily
getting around this by either making text clippings or doing a cut and
paste to Simpletext and printing from there--which works out fine for the
time being.

Any thoughts on this problem?

Microsoft Internet explorer installs several files to your Extensions
folder,(well it dd for me)

These act like the Apple MPEG extension and add functionality to all
Quicktime aware apps.

Movieplayer will also play the files and if you want you can export them to
=2Emov format.

The extensions that it installs are -

Indeo=AE Video and Intel Raw Video.

I have a Mac 6100/66 printing to an HP Deskjet 870Cse. In printing from
Micrtosoft Word 6.0, I have encountered a strange problem. The text will
print fine for a few lines, then a line of text wll begin outside the right
hand margin on the page. Obviously the remainder of that line is lost
since it is outside the margin. Then the next several lines will print
fine and again a line will begin outside the margin on the next line. This
pattern repeats itself throughout the printing. I have used another Mac to
print to the printer using Word 6.0 and encountered no problems. So I am
reasonably confident it is something in the software of my 6100. Has
anyone else encountered a similar printing problem? Any suggestions?
Thanks for the help.

Subject: Q: Windows, Fonts & Internet

Hi all!

Maybe someone out there can help? I was intrigued to read about the 486 DOS
card being used in
an LC475, and since I have to use the occasional Windows program (no, not a
game - data
analysis! My prof insists on this program being used!), here's my first
question:

1) As proud owner of a Performa 5200 CDTV with an LC III style PDS slot - can I
use a 486 DOS
card in this slot? Are there different designs of the 486 cards out there (e.g.
is the one for the
Performa 630 different from the one for the PPC6100)?

I also need to show amino acid sequence alignments, e.g

sequence 1 MNGTGGDAF
sequence 2 MAGTAGDAL

where identical letters are white on black and similar ones are shaded, or
boxed characters
etc... . Therefore comes question 2:

2) Does anyone know of a modified courier font which has this shaded
characters?

(P.S. I know the workarounds, e.g use a table in Word (limited to 32!), use
Excel - but its all so
cumbersome ....)

With my next question I have pestered Mac publications for some time without
ever getting an
answer! If I have a modem I can happily send e-mail to a friend (or foe) who is
equally equipped
(notice: no service provider necessary!) by just using his/her phone number.
With a modem I
can dial-up (connect to) a service provider and mail to people using something
like
someone@somewhere. But

3) how do I send e-mail from a service provider or university (using Pegasus
mail or whatever
is available) to someone with a modem but no service provider (using his/her
phone number)?

Considering that my girlfriend lives far, far away, I'm very interested in the
internet phone
possibilities.

4) Does anyone have experience with how it works? Digiphone says "you need
direct internet
access". What is that? Is a modem enough?

Thanks in advance for all your help.
