CloseDoc is a free system extension that allows you to close
OpenDoc documents the way you were used to, i.e. by typing
Command-Q (for "Quit"). OpenDoc is a great concept, but the
rest of us is still used to the good old world of applications
where quitting an application also means closing its documents.
CloseDoc simply turns any Command-Q keystroke that has no menu
equivalent into a Command-W keystroke, thus mapping any
disallowed "Quit" attempt into a "Close" attempt.

New in version 1.0.2:
- Added a preference to disable the startup icon, which can
be set by editing the 'PREF' resource with ResEdit using the
provided template.

Subject: [*] Copland Perfect folder icons

Welcome to Perfect 3D

What you have downloaded is one of the largest collections of folder Icons ever
put together. There are over 670 folder icons in this collection. It is the
product of many hours of work. I used a res-edited version of Picon to create
these icons. Why silver/grey? I am just not a fan of the dreaded basic
blue. I am
asking for a small payment of $5.00. Is it worth it? That is your opinion.
At the
very least please e-mail me with any suggestions you might have. If you have a
program that is not included then just send me an alias of the icon and I will
make one for you (at no additional cost!).

The quality of the end product is directly related to the quality of the
original
icon designers efforts. All rights to the original icons remains with the
creator. These are ready to use, so go for it!!

This file is stuffed and binhexed. It was virus checked using SAM 4.0

Always Apple!, Michael

NoDesktopCleanup is a cool control panel that lets you add a
confirmation dialog or a KeyQuencer macro to any menu item in
any application. The unusual name comes from the original task
I wrote this control panel for: disabling the annoying "Clean
Up Desktop" and "Clean Up All" menu items in the Finder, which
often make one's life miserable by moving all the icons on the
desktop away from their carefully chosen locations.

New in 1.3:
- Added support for running KeyQuencer macros.

Subject: [*] Verifile 1.3 FAT

Price: Freeware
Source: ftp://ftp.alpcom.it/software/mac/LMontalcini

FAT VERSION - CONTAINS BOTH 680x0 AND NATIVE POWERPC CODE

Verifile is a small freeware utility that calculates a
checksum and a CRC32 on both the data and resource forks of any
file that's dropped on it. This is useful if you want to compare
two files that are not on the same machine without having to
copy them over a network or modem connection. If the hexadecimal
numbers displayed by Verifile match, chances are that the two
files are equal; Verifile automatically compares these numbers
for the last two files that were checked and tells you if they
match or not. Verifile also displays the elapsed time to measure
processor and disk performance. The PowerPC code runs a lot
faster than the 68K code if the file to verify is on a RAM disk,
while the speed improvement is smaller on slower media.

New in 1.3:
- Verifile now automatically checks if the two last files
matched. Very smart indeed...

Subject: [*] WADenizer 2.0 MacDoom Utility

The WADenizer is a utility for converting Doom II WAD add-on files so they
work better with MacDoom. Specifically, it expands sprites like the PC
program DeUSF, fixes the demos so Doom will not crash, and allows map
conversion from Doom to Doom II. It can also extract parts of the files,
allowing you separate sound, map, and graphic portions.
Version 2.0 of the WADenizer adds support for more WADs, such as the Army of
Darkness conversion, and allows the copying of miscellaneous other WAD
information previous versions ignored.

Subject: [*] Workspace Savers v.1

Enclosed are AppleScript scripts that I have developed to
save and restore the configuration of open windows or
"workspaces" in the Finder, Netscape Navigator, and Bare Bones'
BBEdit. With a single click, these scripts will either
take a "snapshot" of the current workspace, saving the window size,
window position, and the associated URL/document for each currently
open window, or restore windows to a previously saved state.

These scripts will replace making multiple menu selections,
multiple window resizings, and multiple window positionings
with a single click.

To use these scripts you will need:

-A Macintosh computer with System 7.5 or later
(requires Scriptable Finder and AppleScript 1.1)
-Netscape Navigator 3.0 or later
-Bare Bones' BBEdit 4.0.2 or later

To use these scripts as speakable commands you will need:

-PowerPC with 24+ MB RAM preferred, approx. 12MB
for system
-The microphone included with most Macs, or other sound input device
-PlainTalk 1.5 speech recognition software

More info and latest versions are provided at:

The software is provided free for your use. If you find this software useful,
consider donating some time, energy, money, or equipment to a local special

You can distribute this software, but you must distribute it for free,

Subject: [q] Norton Utils prob and scsi manager 4.3 is nuts?

I've been trying to run Speed Disk to optimize a Lacie Joule Base (an IBM
mechanism, about 2 GB.). I ran Norton Disk doctor, which found -no-
problems. I then ran speed disk. It halted with an error saying that the
extents directory was invalid, and that it couldn't read the volume bit
map.
Also, this didn't appear until the second time I clicked Check Disk. The
first time, it made the colored image with a number of black (unknown
usage of disk sectors) indicators, stretching across a small (but
signifigant) portion of the disk. this area is listed as occupied (as in
non-free) when the inital silohette appears after selecting a volume
(before a color image has been created). When SD complains about the VBM
and the extents directory, the black disappears and is replaced by free
space (white).
I ran Norton Disk doctor again. It saw the problem, and said it was
fixed. I ran it a second time, and it found no errors.
I ran speed disk again. Same error happens. Run NDD. finds error. fixes.
It continues along this process. Okay, error, fix, okay, error, fix....
I can sprovide a screen shot; I have been trying to resolve this for
threee days and it will not go away.

the driver again, and then the disk mounted. This version of Silverlining
comes with a control panel that provided some loading of drivers for
other devices on the SCSI chain. It lists all devices and the volumes
within each, such as:
Bus 0: Internal SCSI Bus
Disk 0: Quantnum LP80S.....
...(disk volumes)
Disk 6: IBM DORS-32160
...(disk volumes)
CPU 7: PowerPC Macintosh IIci

it is supposed to work with SCSI manager 4.3 but when it is enabled all
the devices dissapear from the panel. This includes the Bus 0:...
listing.

Derek Jacobs

I now seem to get the following new to me error message (in the beginng of
the opening sequence) when not loading or possibly because of loading
certain extensions:

=ABA driver for the selected AppleTalk connection could not be found. The
built-in LocalTalk port will be used instead.=BB

I also have problems with "finding" the LaserWriter in chooser when certain
extensions are not on or some others are off. I have not been able to pin
down the cause.

Who knows the error message, why is it showing up and what does it mean?

Subject: Apple CD-ROM Software

Dear Digest readers,
Well, I've upgraded to CD-ROM software version 5.1.7 from Apple, and they
still haven't upgraded the version 2.1 Audio CD player. It is a nuisance
to have to go into it and turn up the volume for every CD I put in. The
least they could do now that they have the QuickTime 2.5 autoplay feature
is set the default volume to be the top, or maybe make the software have a
popup menu from the CD icon on the desktop to choose the volume once it is
inserted.

No, I don't want external speakers, unless someone can make an adaptor from
the plug in the back of my 7200/75 to a Sony plug. Does anyone know where
such a plug is available?

Thank you.
Sincerely,
[email protected]

Subject: EPS in Claris FileMaker Pro

I have not received a reply from Claris (difficult to get in touch with
them for simple questions that is not answered in the manuals) so I wonder
if any of you know if it is possible to import/link EPS images into a
FileMaker Pro database. I have some signs I am drawing in Illustrator and
they are to appear as pictures in FM. I get the correct font on the screen
(Frutiger) but when I print I get Courier (completely useless).

IM-folk,

I'm trying to contact Joe Kloss, the author of NetLink Remote. Sending
e-mail to the addresses in the docs ('[email protected]' and

Mr. Kloss, I'd very much appreciate it.

Subject: Q: Old Hypercard Stacks with Icon Tabs

I'm looking for old Hypercard stacks that use tabs at the edge of a card to
select different cards, where the tabs have graphic icons instead of/in
addition
to any text. Basically just like the various tab interfaces you see today
(e.g. MS WORD) but with graphic icons in the tabs.

If you have/remember such a stack, please let me know.

Thanks

Subject: Yellow Monitor Screen on Apple 15 Inch MultiScan

I have a Apple 15 inch mutltipe scan monitor (age 15 mos) that
has begun to sometimes/sometimes-not display a screen with a yellow
cast. This occurs sometimes at or after start up. On occasions, if
this occurs at start up, the screen will revert to "normal" after
awhile.

The advice from Apple SOS is that I have a hardware problem with
either the monitor or the CPU, but no explanation of what might be the
problem. My search of the Apple Technical Informaion Library has not
shed any light on the problem. I don't doubt that I have a hardware
problem, but what kind?

Anybody familiar with this problem

Regards, Tony Johnson
