Subject: [*] Q-emuLator Lite 1.9.5

Q-emuLator Lite is a reduced and freeware version of Q-emuLator, the
Sinclair QL emulator for the Mac OS.

Current Q-emuLator Lite version (November 1996) is 0.9.5, which replaces
all previous releases.

The emulator is actually a virtual QL with up to 4M of RAM and access to
the video (in a Mac OS window), keyboard, Mac's file system, QL floppy
disks, sound, serial ports. Other features include mouse emulation under
the Pointer Environment, built-in ram disk, and compatibility with Sinclair
and Minerva ROMs.

Q-emuLator Lite's minimum requirements are system 6.0.7 and 2M RAM. A 68030
processor or better is recommended.

Although version 0.9.5 is slightly faster than previous versions, the
Q-emuLator Lite's speed is limited to about 30% QL's speed.

To use the emulator you need a copy of the QL ROM which you can get from
the World Wide Web or from a QL with 3.5" floppy disk drive (detailed
instructions in the documentation).

Feel free to include Q-emuLator Lite in the Info-Mac CD-ROM.

Two (or three) more things to check...

For me at least, the Find File extension can't launch the Find File
application unless the Find File application is residing in the Apple
Menu Items folder.

The Find File application may have gotten lost in the Desktop database,
so try rebuilding your Desktop.

If all else fails, maybe the Find File application has gotten its
bundle bit messed up. Norton can detect and fix this problem. Then
rebuild the Desktop again.

Good Luck.

I have an LC II, originally 4/40, upgraded to its maximum 10Mb of
memory. I get by in terms of storage with a zip drive. I also use a
Global Village 14.4 modem and an NEC 3x CD drive. Please help with
wisdom on the following:

It has its original RGB 12" monitor and I want to upgrade it, both for
convenience but mainly because most kids' SW now require min. 13".

I found an NEC Multisynch 14" for $135.

1. Is it worth it?
2. Is it compatible? If yes but with some kind of adapter, then
what and how do I get it, for how much?

Other questions I've had for some time:

* I'm now on System 7.0. Should I upgrade? to what, and how do I
get the upgrade?
* Is there a low cost way to speed it up a bit (I know this is a
long shot)

thank you

I would like to thank all those who responded to my question. The answer
seems to lay somewhere in the MIME format issues. Most of the responses
suggested that I was not using a MIME compliant mail reader, but this is
not the case, since I am using Eudora Pro 3.0. The other ideas are that the
listserv is messing up some of the MIME formatting occasionally. This I
have no way of ascertaining, but it sounds plausible. If anyone else has
any ideas, or can confirm or deny the listserv issue, I would appreciate it.

One further item, I use Eudora to receive the info-mac digests from the
listserv at Starnine ([email protected]) and I have it configured to
send the digests with short headers.

Quoting: Not enough memory blues
By: Alain Chabot

: Hi,
:
: as of last Friday, my Mac has decided it does not have enough memory to
: open my HD icon (44 elements), or if it gets this far, it won't open my
: system folder. Or it opens them but when I switch to the Finder, I am told
: there is not enough memory and I must quit some applications and/or close
: windows. Click OK to dismiss the Alert Box and it reappears faster than you
: can reach the window'S close box. That's with 56 Meg of RAM (the real thing
: not VM) and up to 45 Meg left. What gives? Of course, this only started
: after I installed Pointcast Beta 0.9 :-(. But that's another post.

I had this problem the moment I upgraded from System 7.5.1 to 7.5.3 last
spring. Apple-SOS didn't know anything about it and told me to do a
clean-install my system (which I'd already done twice).

I finally discovered that if I disabled the "Calculate Folder Sizes" option
in the Views control panel, then the problem went away. Re-enable it, and
the endlessly repeating alert boxes telling me the Finder was out of memory
promptly returned.

[By the way, I tried increasing the Finder's heap size by 50K (in the SIZE
resource via ResEdit) and that didn't help.]

Since then someone else told me that disabling his Desktop Printing
extensions fixed the problem for him and he considered that solution
preferable to disabling the "Calculate Folder Sizes" option in the Views
control panel.

Since I upgraded to System 7.5.5, I've been able to again show folder sizes
and haven't seen the Finder's out-of-memory alert once.

Hope that gives you some things to try.

There is also a control panel called "Hidden Finder Features" which allows
you to turn on or off each of these features, in addition to turning on or
off the zoom rectagles.

Also, the feature for moving an item to the trash is COMMAND-delete (as it
is in System 7.6 as well).

Just based on my own experience with epson when I had a Color Stylus
printer, I would stear clear of their zip drive. Their driver was very
buggy, and they knew it, but didn't fix it for a couple of yaers! Their
Tech. support was amazingly bad, and they definitly suffer from that "if

I've heard Iomega's tech support ain't none too hot either, but it
couldn't possibly be as bad. At least they seem to want to sell to and

Florin,

First and foremost I want to apologize to you for the delay in response to
your concerns. It is our goal to answer all messages within a 24 hour period.
Unfortunately, since the release of Canvas 5, the volume of incoming
correspondence has significantly increased to the point that we have been
unable to meet that goal.

I have consulted with our testing department with regards to your earlier
questions. I have include them here for your convenience.

(1) Coach and Word 5.1: It appears Coach requires that the shortcut for the
'Find' command be set to the default setting (cmd-F). However, for personal
reasons I've changed it to cmd-H, and Coach doesn't work with that. How can I
make Coach work with Word 5?

Each application, such as Microsoft Word, reserves certain key combinations
for its own functions. In this particular case, Word reserves the Command H
key combination for find and replace, and will not allow coach to override
this function. You may choose any hot key combination that is not already
reserved by the application.

(2) Coach and Word 5.1: After a spelling check session, Coach leaves the
'Match Whole Word' and 'Match Case' options checked, which is extremely
annoying for my work, which requires those options to be unchecked. How can I
make Coach return those options to their initial values when it completes
spell checking?

Thank you for taking the time to bring this to my attention. We are aware of
this. Unfortunately at this time those stettings remain as a default even
after of the end of the spell check. I will forward your concerns about this
to our Product Manager for further review.

(3) Coach and Nisus 4.1.6: I get an error message when I try to use Coach with
Nisus 4.1.6, telling me the clipboard doesn't contain text. Why? How can I
make Coach work with Nisus 4.1.6?

We have reports of an incompatibility between Coach 4.1 and Nisus 4.1 This has
been reported to our testing department and is currently under investigation.
The job number is P287. I have added your comments to this record for further
review. Unfortunateley, at this time I do not have an estimate as to when this
will be resolved.

We welcome the feedback you were so kind to provide and I certainly appreciate
your interest in Coach.

Please let me know if I can be of any further assistance.

If you're buying a Deneba product (e.g. Canvas, Spelling Coach, etc.) and
you're counting on a bit of tech support from them (which, from what I hear
about Canvas 5, you'll definitely need), think again. They don't have an 800
number for tech support, they don't answer their e-mail (although, if
automated receipts are anything to go by, they do read it -- or perhaps they
just download it directly to the trash), they don't answer messages posted to
their AOL area... I wonder who's in charge of Deneba's tech support, Daffy

Hello, all-

I use OT 1.1.1 and OT PPP on my 6100. This occured with both the betas

When using PPP to dial my ISP, it does not recognize the busy signal for

Subject: Q: Preview Windows in Applications

Dig up your old Mac software.

I'm looking for Mac software, published prior to Oct, 1990 that had the
following user interface design:

You have a first window with any kind of data. You have a second window with
some other data. Ideally you can only display either the first or second
window, but not both at the same time.

Instead of switching from the first window to the second window to see its
data,
the application lets you open a preview window somewhere on the screen (it need
not be inside the first window) that has some part of the data from the second
window. That way you can view the data from the second window without having to
leave the first window.

Here are examples:
A calendar program with a first, month view window, and a second, separate
window for viewing appointments for individual dates. In the month window you
can click on a date box and get a preview window of the appointments for the
date.

If you have something like this, or remember a program like this, let me know.

I had many replies to my request for help in Volume 14, issue 282, of the
9th December and have replied privately to all of them. What a pleasure it
is to come onto the 'Net' and find everyone so helpful. Many thanks.

Subject: Spelling Coach Pro, Deneba, and Info-Mac

Ah, the power of Info-Mac!

I had some problems with Deneba's Spelling Coach Pro, so I tried to
contact their tech support. For about a month my email messages to tech
support and to the customer support supervisor went unanswered. Finally,
I posted a harshly-worded message on Info-Mac (v. 277, 12/05/96), cc'd
to Deneba. And Info-Mac's reputation achieved what I, as a customer of
Deneba, couldn't: the next day I received a message from Deneba tech
support -- and it began with an apology. Apparently, they've been
swamped since the release of Canvas 5.

The apology was nice, but the rest didn't help. My main problem was with
Spelling Coach and MS Word 5. Coach requires that the shortcuts for the
"Find..." and "Replace..." commands in Word be set to the default cmd-F
and cmd-H. But, perverse old man that I am, I like them exactly
viceversa, cmd-F for "Replace..." and cmd-H for "Find...", and Coach Pro
can't stomach that.

Deneba tech support's answer wasn't any help:

Each application, such as Microsoft Word, reserves certain
key combinations for its own functions. In this particular
case, Word reserves the Command H key combination for find
and replace, and will not allow coach to override this
function.

(Guess the writer didn't know much about Word 5, but that's a different
kettle of fish.)

However, after a bit of fiddling around, I found a hack, which might
interest other Spelling Coach Pro users.

I used Jim Bumgardner's HexEdit to open
and changed byte 380 from to , and bytes 562
and 744 from to . And guess what. It worked.

You mentioned in v. 14 #279 that the UK office of SyQuest was practically
giving away EZ135 cartridges. How do I contact them? Love the drive but
having trouble finding sources for more 135's. Thank you!

Subject: Unexplained MacPPP problem

Hi,

Please help me to explain the weird behaviour of my MacPPP.

I'm running MacOS 7.5.3 on 8100/110, MacPPP v2.0.1 and MacTCP v2.0.4

I dial up to several PPP servers (work, ISP etc.). Everything used to work
flawlessly until one day when one of my PPP dial-up connections went into
"depression". Once it was my ISP, now it is my work's server.
Description: It dials up fine, goes through all authentications, via
"Establishment" to "Network" messages in the PPP's dialog box. Then the box
disappears and I can see by the modem's lights that PPP session is
established but MacPPP never releases the control, everything is dimmed and
disabled.

I tried all possible modem inits, tests and S register settings, through
MacPPP's terminal window I could see that PPP session was indeed
established, I threw away and reinstalled MacTCP and MacPPP with all their
residual files -- nothing helps. Nothing changed at work neither PPP, nor
modem.

I had that behaviour several times in the past. After long, hopeless
struggle that behaviour was suddenly gone and left no clue of what caused
it.

Can anyone, please help me.

Thank you,
Alex.

Subject: Yet another problem....

First, I wanted to thank everybody for helping me to fix my type 11
crashing problem. It's good to see mac users helping each other out! In
fact, the response was go good I've decided to ask about yet another
problem I've encountered.....
Every once in a while when I start up my Powermac 7200/120, my
keyboard won't work(even though I used it to start it in the first
place). I've checked the connections and what not. The mouse(that's
connected to the keyboard) works just fine. Could this be an extension
conflict or something weird like that? Usually if I reboot a couple of
times the keyboard will work, but it's a real pain because you usually
use the Mac for 10 minutes or so before you need the keyboard for
anything....
Any thoughts would be great!
Thanks! :)
