Subject: [*] "Carol Of the Bells" StartUp Sound (Stereo)
The "Carol Of the Bells" sound is an enchanting, fully-orchestrated
rendition of the classic Holiday carol. It begins with the spiritual
ringing of hand bells throughout the first few measures of the song and
is concluded with explosive orchestra bursts. Its quality and short
length make it ideal for use as a StartUp Sound during the Holiday Season.
The "Carol Of the Bells" sound is one of many from the Clixsounds
"Holiday Series" of freeware sounds and can be downloaded from here or
the Clixsounds Web site. It is available in both stereo and mono
versions.

Subject: [*] "Jingle-Bell" StartUp Sound (Stereo)
'Tis the Season for some Holiday cheer, even for your Mac. The
"Jingle-Bell" sound is from the Clixsounds "Holiday Series," and is great
for StartUp during the Holidays. It is a high-quality sample of the last
line of the classic carol, "Jingle Bells." Its style is similar to that
of a climactic grand finale to a Holiday Symphony, and is full of boomy
percussion, lively strings, and punchy brass.
The "Jingle-Bell" StartUp is available in both stereo and mono versions
and can be downloaded here or at the Clixsounds WWW site at, along with
the entire "Holiday Series" at:

ButtonTalk is an easy to use tool for creating interactive
fiction. It may also be useful for documentation, and for
scripts or prototypes of interactive products. My goal is
to explore some notions of how writers can create interac-
tive fiction and what the possibilities are. My method is
to give you a simple and powerful authoring tool that lets
you create finished products.
ButtonTalk 1.4 adds: improved reliability, improved compatibility
with system 7.5.5, multi-file HTML support, page numbers when
writing text files, support for alternate fonts, cut and copy
of page trees, searching for orphaned links, a new shortcut for
removing links, plus minor bug fixes.

FAT VERSION - CONTAINS BOTH 680x0 AND NATIVE POWERPC CODE
CalConvert is a small shareware utility that does integer
arithmetic calculations and converts integer values to
different bases (decimal, hexadecimal, binary, octal or any
custom base between 2 and 32) or to an OSType (a sequence of
four ASCII characters). A bit field representation is available
to inspect and set each bit separately. The conversion may be
signed or unsigned - you can always enter a signed value, it
gets converted to unsigned if needed; the result may be
interpreted either as a word (2 bytes) or as a long word (4
bytes).
New in 2.2.2:
- Added an option not to build the Font menu right away,
to speed up the launch process when lots of fonts are
installed. Fixed the parser so that it now complains about
dangling operators at the end of the expression.

I would well believe this. In my own cases though, and that of the
original poster, we had no extensions since we'd initialized
I've also got a marked dislike of 7.5.2, and don't use it to install under.
Having a number of Macs, I had a universal 7.5.5 set up on a 68K Mac, so I
can run off the System and Finder of that when I do installs on ppc
machines.
Just as Speed Doubler is more sensitive than Disk Doctor re damage
it
does seem as if the same applies to the Apple installer, it refuses to
install on volumes which Norton or Disk First Aid pass without comment.

I just tried out a special $29.95 (US) 60-day money-back offer for
TurboCAD Mac. I don't know whether this price is available outside the
US, but a message to one of the following should get you an answer:
[email protected] [email protected] [email protected]
http:www.imsisoft.com 800-833-8082 (US) 415-257-3000 (Int'l.)
This is one of those "enticement pack" deals, in which the telephone
salesperson tries to get you to order more expensive options, such as
TurboCAD 3-D, and several libraries of CAD symbols. I "bit" on this, and
spent about $135.00 (which also included a "free gift" of Disk Express
II, and which I already owned).
However, I am going to send the whole thing back. Four different
salespeople assured me that the program will indeed open native AutoCAD
files (.DWG), but in fact it won't. Moreover, relatively simple .DXF
files from a late version of AutoCAD are handled poorly by the program.
Like AutoCAD, TurboCAD's interface is not very intuitive to this
long-time Illustrator and Freehand user, with modal dialogue boxes
abounding. The symbols, when laboriously imported into one of the latter
two programs (via EPS export-import), have way more points than they
should - a simple circle can easily have 20 or 30 points, versus the four
that I would prefer.
There is no fat binary version of the program, and it requires separate
installs on each of a 68xxx and PPC computer to make both versions
available. The program cannot be open in the background unless a
TurboCAD file of some kind is also open - the startup modal dialogue box
has options to Quit or to Open, but none to Cancel.
The printed output of included sample TurboCAD drawings are quite
impressive, although I gave up before getting much of a feel for how
difficult it is to create such files from scratch. If you can get it for
near the price quoted above, the program *may* be worth trying out.
If you have further questions, please reply via private e-mail.

Subject: Apple PPP: a few questions
Hi,
I've just converted to Apple's implementation of PPP. Very nice. In a short
amount of time I managed to get a fairly complex script up and running: that
save option (bad UI) is nice!
I have a few questions:
- I'm trying to automate it with AppleScript. The PPP oasx works great.
Except, I want to open PPP (and close it) with out popping up a dialog. You
should be able to say "PPP connect with quiet mode", but that seems to have no
effect. Any ideas?
- In the AppleGuide file for PPP there is a definition entry for "connection
script" which says to look for "how do I create a connection script" to see how
to make one. I could not find that entry in the apple guide.
- Where can I get a manual for the CCL scripts?
Thanks in advance!
Cheers,
Gordon.

Subject: CD-ROM & OpenTransport
I have the same exact problem when I use a certain software on my 68K Mac
under either of OT or MacTCP. Specifically, when I try to run CL-HTTP
(Common Lisp Hypermedia Server from MIT) on my Macintosh Common Lisp, to
drive a web page from my own home, sometime after I get connected to my
ISP's personal web page to publish my IP address, my domain name servers on
the ISP's side (I happen to have 2 sets of DNS) stop to respond totally,
preventing me to even access pop or ftp or web url, making my Internet
session completely useless. I have communicated this apparent problem to
both MIT and digitool, the maker of MCL. But so far, no word of fixes or
workarounds. If your observation that external drives are causing this DNS
mockup is correct, then I am very much interested in your solutions as I
also use external APS drive and external CD-ROM drive, the former under
CasaBlanca's Drive 7 and the latter under FWB's CD-ROM Toolkit. BTW, this
problem never happens with any other Internet apps in my case, unlike
yours. Also, I am aware of the fact that both OT and MacTCP have a bug in
closing the TCP connection. This bug is rather complicated, as I
understand it, in such a way that it is caused by the interaction of the
server and OT/MacTCP. And many servers out there have bugs of their own.
It is beyond me to comment any further on this matter, but just to let you
know this. Also, when the DNS gets mocked up, if you run CU-SeeMe, then my
experience shows that its internal code will try to fix this problem.
Unfortunately for me, I don't have that much momeory to work on my Mac.
The real fix is what I want most, of course.

Subject: Dropped Modem Connections
Everyone seems to be asking the same question right about now: how can I
keep my modem from dropping connections unaccountably while ftp-ing or
surfing the Net?
I'm one of those lucky people who works out of his home and doesn't have to
keep regular hours, meaning I can be up long after midnight fiddling with
modem initiation strings and software gimmicks. I'm running Mac OS 7.5.5.
with OT 1.1.1 on a Power Mac 7100/80 with a SupraFAX 288 external modem
recently upgraded by flash ROM to 33.6 Kbps. I live in a remote part of
Oklahoma with old overhead phone lines and lots of stormy weather. I began
my life with computers and modems over 15 years ago, running two Remote
CP/M BBS's out of my home in San Diego, and have been fighting modem
connection and throughput problems ever since. Here is what I've learned:
1. Speeds over 14.4 require extremely clean phone lines end to end, and
you almost never get them. Don't set your DTE rate above 57,600. You may
have to drop back to 38,400. Remember it's better to maintain a connection
at 38.4 than lose it at 115.2.
2. Modem connections are highly susceptible to seasonal temperature
variations when the copper lines expand and contract. Winter's coming on,
and that alone probably accounts for 98% of current modem connection
problems across the country.
3. Even with "local" calls, you're at the mercy of the phone company's
relay system, which changes each time you call a number. Often you will
get a better connection just by redialing. This is frustrating and
maddening to many people because nothing you try with software upgrades,
buying better modems, buying better/faster computers, mystery modem
initiation strings, or even moving to another location will save you from
the vagaries of how any given call is relayed from end to end at any
particular time. Even if you do everything "perfectly" (whatever that may
be), your modem may drop a connection because of noise problems at any
time.
4. AT&T, MCI, and Sprint long-distance lines all have similar line-noise
and relay problems and they're all equally unpredictable.
5. Internet traffic is getting heavier and heavier, particularly during
business and evening hours. Weekends and holidays are also getting worse
for Internet browsing and ftp downloading. It's gotten so I can barely use
the Internet during peak periods.
6. Make sure you're using the correct Macintosh initiation string for your
modem. With my SupraFAX, for example, the Macintosh string is [AT]&F1, and
that's all it needs. Sometimes adding &D2 seems to help, but everything
else is superfluous. I see all kinds of strings recommended for special
S-register settings, but these will not fix dropped connections (I think
I've tried them all).
7. Remember that not all modems work as well with Macs as they do with
PCs. If your modem manual doesn't include a specific set-up string for
Macs (AT&F1, for example), you may be using a modem that just won't work
properly with your computer. All I know is that SupraFAX modems specify
different set-up strings for Macs and PCs and that U.S. Robotics
manufactures Macintosh-specific models.
Good luck!

: working okay except the Find command under the File menu. The only Find

:
: Has anyone else discovered this same situation? Is there a way to revert
: back to the more recent approach?
Just between us Allens, the sole purpose of the extension called, "Find
File Extension" is to modify the Finder's behavior so that it launches the
Find File application instead of bringing up the Finder's built-in (old)
find routine. You said you have all extensions enabled; double-check
specifically for Find File Extension.
You can always launch Find File in the ways you launch any other program --

I use Claris E-mailer to send messages to a variety of clients, and I
have
problems with just two of them. I THINK they are both reading their mail
with
CCMail on a PC network. I don't know anything about CCMail, but my
messages arrive garbled: sometimes only slightly, but other times munged
up into complete illegible gibberish. Is there anything I can do to
prevent this at my end, or failing that is there anything the recipients
can do to enable them to receive my messages correctly?

Subject: Generic System and Finder Icons
This happened to me once. My solution was:
1) open System file with ResEdit (by way of Get File/Folder Info..., not
usual Open...) and see if Bundle bit is checked (on). If not, check it,
and save.
2) reboot. If the problem persists, then install an extension called
Desktop Reset. This extension deletes all the desktop files right before
the rebuild process. There seems to be several flavors of such a program;
pick any one that you like.
3) reboot and rebuild the desktop by holding Option-Command at the boot time.
I had to go through all 3 steps above to fix the problem. Hope this helps.

Yes, that's a common (cosmetic) problem, commonly caused by some
communication software installer, which need to add some resources
directly into the 'System' file.

Don't worry, it's completely harmless, and it's very easy to remedy.
Just use some tool that can edit the 'Finder bits' (file attribute
information) of files. For example, you can use ResEdit's 'Get File/Folder
Info', or you can use some other easier-to-use tools like FileTyper or
File Buddy (both available at info-mac/disk/).
Set the 'Bundle' bit and the 'NameLocked' bit of the file "System"
in your system folder, using one of those utilities. (That is, make the
'Bundle' and 'NameLocked' checkboxes CHECKED, for the "System" file.)
Then, Rebuild your Desktop once again. Your System/Finder/Clipboard files
will restore their correct icons.
The 'Bundle' bit is actually causing your problem: The Finder will not
display the correct icon when the 'Bundle' bit is off for the file that
contains the actual icon graphics resource.
The 'NameLocked' bit is unrelated to your problem, but you should fix it
anyway, because it is bad news that you could accidentally rename the
"System" file.
The reason why this happens: When those Installers modify the "System"
file (perhaps to add some modem driver resource), it cannot modify the
currently-running System file. Therefore, they create a copy of the
current System file, add their resources to the copy, exchange the current
system file with the modified one, and let the user reboot the machine
(which will then start up with the newly-modified "System" file).
Typically, those Installers just "forget" to set the "Bundle" and
"NameLocked" bits for that copy of the System file.
So, us users have to fix those two bits ourselves, with the help of
ResEdit/FileTyper/FileBuddy, to remedy the stupidity of those third-party
installers...
Good luck!

Gib, just a tiny point here: there are exceptions, but on the Mac &D0
(0=zero) is the Data Terminal Ready setting to use, since it overrides DTR.
The odd wiring you're thinking of is DTR wired into Request To Send; and
with &D2 a potential drop on RTS will lead to a DTR drop, and that will cut
the line. This may be the reason also why in flow control settings in PPP,
CTS only (Clear to Send) is the safest fallback setting.
I've been a bit obsessed with DTR drops since the days when my 14.4 USR
Sportster (so called Mac & Fax) came factory set with a DIP switch enabling
&D2 - in my own case on bad lines from NTT in Japan I could never connect
with anything.

I had that error on a pair of brand-new out-of-the-box 8500/132's. I have
no idea what the problem was. I did report it to Apple.
In my case, only the "Net Install" version of 7.5.5 produced the error.
The 3-disk-image version went ok.

Any reason why this should be in the United States? Any domain
can be hosted anywhere in the world - it is to my knowledge not
dependent on the domain name. A domain called xxxx.ch needs not
necessarily to be physically in Switzerland, for example.

To my knowledge, 7.5.2 was for PCI PowerMacs only. According to Apple's
database, the PB150 should work with 7.1.1, 7.5, 7.5.1 and 7.5.3. The
"original" software was 7.1.1 for this machine.

Daniel--
sadly, the answer to your question is no. The main reason is not, as you
suspect, conflicting SCSI IDs but conflicting SCSI controllers. The
reason you'll never be able to get this to work is that each Mac has a
SCSI controller, and if you connect them as you describe, you'll have two
SCSI controllers on one SCSI bus, which just ain't gonna happen.
If your Centris hard drive is pretty large (say, 500mb+), it might be
worth your while to remove the centris HD and plug it in to your
Performa's internal SCSI chain by unplugging the CD drive and using that
connector. If you haven't done that sort of thing before, or if you're
not sure how to do it, my advice would be not to start now, especially
since you have a perfectly good Zip drive around.
Another option: Use a printer cable to set up a Localtalk network, and
copy the files that way. This will be pretty slow, but you can do it in
one step and go watch a movie instead of shuffling Zip disks.
Don't forget to run Disk First Aid on the Centris before copying the
drive's contents (why copy corrupted files?). And don't accidentally copy
the entire system folder, or you'll end up with two system folders on
your Performa.
Good luck!

None in the chip itself. However, most 604 systems have the processor on

Subject: wierd (zip) problem
Hi all macusers,
A few weeks ago I bought a Iomega Zip drive which I've been
using without problem since then. Last weekend, though, something
wierd happened to my Performa 5200 CD (PowerPC, 16M RAM, 512M HD,
System 7.5.3 R2).
Every time I turn the Mac on, it seems some of the system
settings get lost, particularly:
- Time & Date reset to 20:30 27:11:1956 (sic!)
- Apple talk turn to on when usually off
- highlighted text colour turn to black when usually blue
If I correct those settings they remain right even after a
restart, but if I shut down the Mac (power off) the same
problem reappears the next time I turn the machine on.
I'm not so sure this happens because of the Zip, but that's
the only change occourred to my system in the last months.
Can someone give me a hint about what's going on?

I would well believe this. In my own cases though, and that of the
original poster, we had no extensions since we'd initialized
I've also got a marked dislike of 7.5.2, and don't use it to install under.
Having a number of Macs, I had a universal 7.5.5 set up on a 68K Mac, so I
can run off the System and Finder of that when I do installs on ppc
machines.
Just as Speed Doubler is more sensitive than Disk Doctor re damage
does seem as if the same applies to the Apple installer, it refuses to
install on volumes which Norton or Disk First Aid pass without comment.

Good luck!

This happened to me once. My solution was:
1) open System file with ResEdit (by way of Get File/Folder Info..., not
usual Open...) and see if Bundle bit is checked (on). If not, check it,
and save.
2) reboot. If the problem persists, then install an extension called
Desktop Reset. This extension deletes all the desktop files right before
the rebuild process. There seems to be several flavors of such a program;
pick any one that you like.
3) reboot and rebuild the desktop by holding Option-Command at the boot time.
I had to go through all 3 steps above to fix the problem. Hope this helps.

Yes, that's a common (cosmetic) problem, commonly caused by some

I have

In my case, only the "Net Install" version of 7.5.5 produced the error.

Any reason why this should be in the United States? Any domain

dependent on the domain name. A domain called xxxx.ch needs not
necessarily to be physically in Switzerland, for example.

To my knowledge, 7.5.2 was for PCI PowerMacs only. According to Apple's

Daniel--
sadly, the answer to your question is no.
Good luck!

obtained from another source or should I be more sensible and wait for
System 7.6 promised for early next year? My apologies if the upgrade is
easy to find and I am wasting your time.

1) I understand that a 604 runs about 30% faster than a 603e even though
the indicated clockspeed may be higher with the 603? Is that correct?
So, would a 604 at 160Mhz be faster than a 603 at 180Mhz?

2) Apart from the speed potential - if that is so - are there any other
benefits to opting for the 604, such as projected changes in the OS (Be
or otherwise?)

None in the chip itself. However, most 604 systems have the processor on
upgradable daughter cards and most 603 systems do not. So while the chip itself
won't hold you back, 603 systems tend to be less upgradable.

TIA Rossano Basile ([email protected])
p.s. Sorry for my poor english.
