Subject: 7.5.5 update problems
Hello All,
I am trying to update a 7200/90 Macintosh to 7.5.5. I am doing a clean
(really clean) install.
These are the steps I have taken:
1.) Boot off 7.5.2 CDROM and run drive setup 1.05 to initialize the hard
disk and update disk driver.
2.) Install a clean 7.5.2 System from CDROM.
3.) Reboot
4.) Run the 7.5 Update 2.0 to upgrade to 7.5.3.
5.) Reboot
6.) Run Disk First Aid and check for errors. No errors.
7.) Select 7.5.3 only from extensions manager and reboot (shouldn't matter
since only the operating system is loaded anyway).
8.) Run the 7.5.5 update.
I am getting an error message in the middle of the install of 7.5.5. The
installation gets to the point where it says "optimizing the system file" and
then it stops and says that it cannot copy the system file to my hard disk and
that I should delete the file and try again.
I am following the installation instructions in the readme file and I cannot
understand what this error means.
Please help. Thanks!

Subject: [Q] "integrated" keyboard suggestion
We have become the proud owners of a PowerMac 8500- definitely a speed
bump from our PowerBook 180. The problem is that we became really used to
having the trackball under our thumb.
MacConnection and MacWarehouse have the Adesso NuForm and Tru-Form split
keyboards with a trackpad in the right spot, or with what I assume is an
IBM-TinkPad-rubber-eraser-stype pointer.
Has anyone tried these configurations? How is Adesso's quality/support?
Are there any other vendors that have this sort of integrated solution- the
ball/pad below the spacebar, not off to the side.
I was actually hoping for a smaller keyboard footprint- more like the
older Apple keyboard without the F-Keys or help-cluster that appeared
alongside the Saratoga. The Datadesk TrackBoard would be great if a smaller
ball was in the right spot.

Subject: [Q] 2 Button mouse and DOS Card
Hi all,
I wonder if someone out there can help. I recently installed the original
Apple DOS compatability card in my 6100/60 (486, DX2, 66MHz), it runs
perfectly (well, if DOS can ever be described as such). The problem is that
I'd like to be able to use a second mouse button for a game I want to play
(or even for Windows, if I ever install it). I know the numeric keypad
emulates the right-hand mouse button, but I'd like a real 2 button mouse
which works in both environments. I've already tried the MacWarehouse
version, unfortunately the right button is not recognised by the PC side
(I'm not surprised, but the folks at MacWarehouse assured me that it
would). FYI, I'm using a DOS mouse driver which does recognise the right
mouse button on real DOS systems.
I hope that someone may be able to suggest a solution (not too expensive I
hope) as I can't be the only person with a DOS/Windows card who wants full
mouse functionality.
I am truly sorry that the first time I use this list for help I have to
contaminate it with a question which relates to DOS/Windows
. TIA.
Regards,
Richard Marton.

No, not what you're thinking.
What I'd love to do is be able to "dock" our PowerBook 180 to our PowerMac
8500 via SCSI (or whatever) and be able to use the 180's LCD screen as a
second monitor FOR THE 8500. Extra credit if we could use the 180's

Dear Digest readers,
It seams whenever I add an external drive with APS Mounter 4.0.4, or
internal CD-ROM, no matter what the contents of the CD-ROM, my
OpenTransport 1.1/FreePPP 2.5v2 totally ignores domain nameservers it dials
up into, or is already connected to. As a result the CD-ROM or external
hard disk prevents me from visiting web sites, checking e-mail or ftping
using TCP/IP. The problem persists until I unmount the disks and reboot.
I am running System 7.5.5, and the problem has persisted since I used
System 7.5.2 and 7.5.3 on my PowerMac 7200/75.
Anybody know why this happens?

Hi all,
I'm not sure this is so much a problem as it is an oddity. I have a
PowerBook 5300/16 running 7.5.5. Instead of the customary Finder and
System icons, I am shown generic icons for the Finder and System file.
I don't think this is a problem as I haven't been having any problems
except for the occasionaly crash while using Netscape.
To try to remedy this I have rebuilt my desktop a few times and run Disk
First Aid which reports no problems. I haven't reinstalled a fresh
system folder, though. I am wondering if this is a sign of future
trouble or just an odd occurence that I shouldn't worry about. Any help
or ideas would be appreciated.
Thanks,

I use a Zip and love it. Others have had problems and tech support stinks
and COSTS. Since I've had no problems I am happy. As the rebate goes, the
Epson sends your money faster than Iomega from what I'd read. Last I saw

As Gordon said, there isn't enough space to keep older versions of software
in the I-M archive. As one who downloads a complete directory every month or

However, there is a solution. The fine folk at Pacific Hitech snap the archive
every now and once and put it on CD-ROM. The first was January 93. It is up
to version 9 now ($40 from www.pht.com). I wouldn't be surprised if they had
some older ones lying about to start your archive. Or start now and get a new

Subject: PPP callback [A]
I recently picked up Apple's OT/PPP files in the hope of
facilitating a connection to a call back server. I was
pleasantly surprised. Though the scripting language isn't
for the faint of heart if you start from scratch, there is
a way to have it automatically generate a script for you.
This process involved first connecting with a terminal
window. At this point it will ask you if you would like it
to generate a script. Save this script, then optionally
edit it (there were some unneeded spaces, linefeeds, and
carriage returns.) Then "Import" the script into PPP and
you're on your way.
With a very small amount of editing to the script, I was
able to elegantly automate the connection.
Apple seems to have done a really good job with this one.

I bought a Syquest EZ135 shortly before the Flyer was announced. I am very
pleased indeed with it. It is ideal as a second hard disk, and I imagine
that the Flyer is just as fast, since they share the same basic mechanism.
The Flyer can read EZ135 disks, but not vice versa.
The Zip uses a different mechanism, arguably (and it has been argued!) more
like a floppy, and is not as fast. If you want to use it primarily for
backups (ie not running applications off it) then this is unlikely to be of
any consequence. Many people are happy running applications off it (but many
people used to be happy running applications off a floppy - it's all
relative).
In my opinion, none of these formats is going to become a standard. The
technology is just changing too rapidly, and current models are obsolete
within a few years as manufacturers compete. So just accept that you are
never going to be able to buy Word 9.1f on a Zip cartridge.
My advice would be to try to find somewhere trying to flog some old stock of
the EZ135. Everyone wants the latest gizmos, but you'll probably find the EZ135
is completely adequate for what you want, and whatever you buy, it will be
obsolete in a few years anyway. The UK Syquest office was practically giving
them away recently. I would not worry about availability of cartridges - even
old 5 1/4 inch cartridges are still readily available.

Have you tried rebuilding your desktop (standard Mac answer #1)? In my
experience, Zip disks' desktops seem to be highly corruptible (maybe they
should go into politics). Hold down the Command and Option keys while you
insert the disk in question, and say yes when it asks to rebuild the
desktop. Or better yet, download Techtool from Info-Mac.
This should solve your problem.

Hello All,
I am trying to update a 7200/90 Macintosh to 7.5.5.

Richard Marton.

No, not what you're thinking.
What I'd love to do is be able to "dock" our PowerBook 180 to our PowerMac

second monitor FOR THE 8500.

Subject: Generic System and Finder Icons
Hi all,
I'm not sure this is so much a problem as it is an oddity. I have a
PowerBook 5300/16 running 7.5.5.
Thanks,
Erik

I use a Zip and love it. Others have had problems and tech support stinks
and COSTS. Since I've had no problems I am happy. As the rebate goes, the
Epson sends your money faster than Iomega from what I'd read. Last I saw
it discussed people were waiting 10 weeks plus for the $50 from Iomega
and the Utah Attorneys General was supposedly investigating that issue.
Again, I am very pleased with mine and would consider another if I needed
it. It is becoming a standard and may be included in Apple Macs and Mac
clones. It is in some clones already.

As Gordon said, there isn't enough space to keep older versions of software
in the I-M archive. As one who downloads a complete directory every month or
so, I believe him. Just the list of titles is half a meg now.
Or start now and get a new
snapshot every year.

I've seen a bit of weirdness of the type you refer to with and

The "Icon" file is the custom icon stuck onto the folder in which

Good luck!
