I use FreePPP 2.5v2 and have no problems with the callback
functionality.

Actually, I have a related question: Is there a way to write a script
that would automate this. Now, I use a script to do the first password
authentication, negociation process, but as soon as the dialback command
is inwoked i go over to terminal window mode to do the final connection
handshake.

Peter Peldan

[I have automated this in FreePPP. The biggest difficulty is the lack of
scripting support in FreePPP -- you have (I think) only 10 items to look for
or send. In the account setup, check-box the "script" conneciton option and
then edit the script. I am going to start using Apple's PPP, as I think the
scripting support there is much better. -Gordon]

Subject: [Q] how to connect a Mac to an NT server via dial-up?

folks,

I'm trying to get an NT 4.0 server set up as an ISP. My problem is
that I cannot get my Mac to gateway through the server to the Internet.

I'm running MacOS 7.5.5, FreePPP v2.52, and OT 1.1. I can dial-in and
the FreePPP dialog shows that a connection is sucessfully established.
Once that has happened, I can browse local Web Pages, but only using
the raw IP number of the server. DNS doesn't work and I can't get
outside the system in any manner at all.

I've got the TCP/IP control panel set to use FreePPP and to get all
the IP info from the PPP server. The server properly assigns an IP to
my machine, but the net mask and router info are both being set to
0.0.0.0. Does this indicate an improper setup on the server side of
things? This same setup works fine dialing into my Netcom shell
account, running SLiRP on the shell side.

I know I've got things working on the Internet side, as I can access
the server via the Internet via HTTP and FTP from my Netcom account.
I've got mail up and running as well and can get out to the I'net if
I'm right on the server. My partners, who run PCs, tell me they have
no problem dialing through the server using PC s/w.

What's am I missing?

P.S.: Please send replies to rather that using the
return address in this note. Thanks.

HAVE FUN!! -- Jesse

[Yes -- if the router address is missing, then the mac won't know how to
contact any machine off the local network (in this case, just the mac and
the NT server). I have used NT 4.0 as a dial-in server using FreePPP and
it worked fine; however I didn't set it up. So, it is possible. -Gordon]

Subject: [Q] Which removable drive?

I have decided to buy a removeable cartridge drive, and am looking at
three possibilities. I have read the MacUser/MacWorld reports,
comparisons etc, and I am looking for any opinions people might have on
the following three possibilities. The first is the obvious Zip drive,
which costs about $150 US after rebate. The Epson Zip drive is listed as
$130 US, after rebate. Is there any difference between the two besides
manufactures, and has anyone seen any lower prices in other catalogues
besides MacZone?
The other option is that of new EZFlyer 230. I have not heard much
about this drive. Does anyone have one, and would you say it is worth the
$300 US? Is it substantial faster then the ZIP? Would you say it is
likely to become a standard drive, ie integrated into computers,
powerbooks, etc? Has anyone seen a lower price on this?
Thanks for your help and time, and I look forward to hearing your
comments. (BTW, please Cc a copy to my address so I don't miss any
responses).

Subject: Easy View -- chapters and sections

Greetings Info-Mac'ers:

I've been working with EV and TexEdit to spruce up my collection of MACWAY
Digests. Searching through my collection is not easy. I'd like to be able
to search section headings =E0 la Info-Mac but I can't get the sections to
appear as they do in c.s.m.p. and info-mac.

I've explored the formatting of the text documents and the configuration
option in EV and now I'm at a loss as to how to get the sections to appear.

Do you think I need to configure EV in some manner or do I need to add a
text string to the text documents?

Actually, the more I tweak that config menu, the more confused I become.
Sometimes I can get the sections but the chapters are blank. Most times the
chapters display OK but the sections do not appear.

I've tried to contact Mr. Eyler of EV fame and his address bounced. Akif!
Where are you? EV is still the greatest!!

Rob

I gather that Claris Organiser is single user only.

What is there available to track and serve a small group (upto 20 or so)?
The idea would be to install it on a server and allow each client to access
it from individual machines. Also, it would be nice if the software was
able to allow different access levels by group.

Thanks.

Subject: I'm a Big Dummy

A while ago, I posted an note suggesting that telling everyone you know not
to buy Performas based on a single bad experience was a Bad Thing.

I've recently recieved mail misinterpreting my remarks and essentially
ascribing to me the motive of wanting to quash debate on this forum,
specifically about problems with Performas. I disagree, and stand by my
remarks as written. I own a Performa myself; if there are problems with
them, I sure would like to know. However, when I bought that Performa, the
monitor was dead out of the box. I called Apple, and got a new one.
Problem solved; I didn't tell my family and friends to stop buying
Performas because of it.

I think telling everyone to stop buying Widgets because your Widget has a
problem is wrongheaded.

Here's what I'm about:

I am all for the open discussion and reporting of questions and problems
whatever they concern. If I have something to offer by way of a solution,
I will offer it. I don't want anyone to shut up, or to feel that they
can't offer a question in this forum.

Sometimes, an article on info-mac [or any mailing list I'm on] will ask a
question or make a statement that I feel is badly phrased, or illuminates
some general principle of troubleshooting, or is exceptionally vague, or
whatever. Occasionally, I feel compelled to comment on such articles, with
the goal being to illustrate what I feel are the important concepts shown
therein, hopefully working toward improving the level of mutual support we
can all provide here.

Whenever I post one of these commentary articles, I try to remember to do
two things:
1. change the subject line, so the article is not seen as a direct reply
2. remove reference to the original poster's name, so that the article
is not seen as a personal attack.

Sometimes I use satire to make my points. Let me apologize for any past or
future offense that anyone takes at my remarks. I assure you, they are not
meant as personal attacks. I don't like personal attacks, and try not to
indulge in them. Sometimes I misinterpret what people say [or usually,
don't say]; not surprising, since I'm a person, as well.

Now, I realize all this sounds pretty high-and-mighty, and I don't mean it
to. Please don't interpret these remarks as meaning I place myself on some
sort of pedestal above the masses; I don't. I'm a big dummy. I learn
things every day here.

I just wanted to clear up my motives. I'm really not an ogre. I am a big
dummy, just doing my best to keep learning, not suck, and help when I can.
I guess I am opinionated about some things, but so is everyone. My
personal crusade is the promotion of clarity of communication.

If you don't like what I have to say, tell me. Maybe I can explain my
point of view better, or maybe you'll change it.

But for pete's sake, don't stop asking questions on my account.

$20-30/month) but reasonably fast site to access from Malaysia, providing
say 10-20mb of HTTP & FTP space. let me read Usenet news and keep an

Something of an extended shell acc. But I am not too sure of all the

I need all the feedback I can get and I thank you in advance. I am sorry

Re : Multi-session CD recording

I'm archiving from an external 730Mb (with less than 650Mb data each time)
hard drive to a d2 (Sony) CD recorder with Toast CD-ROM Pro v.2.5.10

1) The first "session" I recorded 525Mb, no problem. I took the CD home,
and successfully read from this disk on my 4x CD-ROM (external Apple 600e)
for a month.

2) The second "session", recorded 110Mb from a 125Mb partition created on
the same external 730Mb drive, to fill the 650Mb CD.

Now my 4x CD-ROM (external Apple 600e) will not read this CD and it makes
some nasty noises in the processes of trying to do so.

I returned to the place where I recorded the CD and tried the CD on other
drives, 4x Apple internal, 2x d2 external, and again in the 4x d2 recorder.
It mounts, slowly, but it mounts.

Open Control Panel for Multisession, I find something very biszarre. Three
tracks,
APS Drive.1-699.0mb (actually 525mb)
APS Drive.2-125.0mb (actually 110mb)
APS Drive.2-349.5mb (who knows what this is? type -58 error when attempting
to mount, I think it's an invisible blank partiton from when I made the
125mb partition)

Why do the two tracks I recorded show the partitions ("sessions") totaling
724mb and not the actual data size 635Mb?

So, what's the deal with my Apple 600e? Is it not multi-session friendly.
How can I mount this CD with my drive? I have already installed all the
drivers from the d2, and still the same noise. I even disconnected the
drive and just tried the CD-ROM all by itself in the drive. Same bizarre
noise, and it won't mount.

Help?

Hi there,

I appear to have a major problem in that I have erased my HDD in my PB 150
(deliberately) but am now totally unable to reinstall my system or any
system file on the bloody thing. I have attempted to install S7.5.2 from
disk images form my PM 7500/100 cd rom with no success even with the
disktools and PB 150 enabler it asks for a reinstall of a 'newer' system as
this one is NOT appropriate. I have tried sys 7.0.1 (doesn't work) and am
now down to my last three hairs. Any suggestions from the informed?

Cheers Glen

PS: My personal request to apple.....shoot the person who included the IDE

Subject: PPC 6100 won't boot

I recently upgraded my PowerMac 6100/60 from 7.5.3 to System 7.5.5. A
couple of weeks later on switching it on I got the dreaded floppy icon with
the flashing question mark. I ran Norton 3.0 from the emergency disc and
found no major problem. MacCheck 1.05 also told me there was nothing wrong.
I disconnected my external CD from the scsi port in case that was the cause
and verified that the internal hard disc was the start up device. Still no
joy.

I then did a clean install of 7.5 from the system discs, upgraded to 7.5.3
and copied across all the preferences, additional extensions, control
panels etc. from the Xsystem folder which accumulate over time and junked
the old system completely.

This solved the problem for 10 days or so...until last night when the
floppy icon appeared again. Same story, nothing wrong according to Norton.
I can run any program from the hard disc but it just won't boot.

Before I go through the time consuming process of reinstalling the system
again, is there anything I have missed ?

Any ideas gratefully received,

thanks

Subject: Software authors: Upgrade to *what*

Quite often when updated softwares are submitted to Info-Mac, the
authors include abstracts which fail to introduce the *purpose* of the
software.

Those of us who haven't seen the software before -- or who rejected
earlier versions for lack of a needed feature -- are left trying to
figure out from "What's new" just what it is that the software does.
It's pretty hard to decide if the new features might make a download
worthwhile.

Authors, remember to include a short *description* of your creation's
purpose with each upgrade. No, just pointing at a website isn't enough.

it to replace my current internal drive. However, I haven't yet had much
luck. I would like to know if I am totally out of luck -- that is, is
there a technical reason I've overlooked as to why I _can't_ use such a drive

internal SCSI cable that will let me plug this drive into my computer?
Perhaps some sort of 68 pin to 50 pin adapter (internal -- I've found an
external one but that isn't good enough)?
Thanks!

Subject: Zip drive and Icon problem

This is possibly the weirdest thing that's happened to me in my 10 years of
Mac use. I just a got a zip drive. I copied everything from my 1.0 gig
drive onto zip disks. Here's the weird thing: Most items that have a
custom icon on my HD have a randomly selected icon (from elsewhere on my
HD) on the zip disk copy. And even weirder, if the item with the custom
icon is a folder, the zip disk copy will have a random wrong icon on it, as
well as a mystery file which will have appeared inside with the icon that
SHOULD be on the parent folder. This file is always titled simply "icon"
BUT when I get info on it, sometimes it's an empty text document, sometimes
a supposed application (that gets an error if you try to run it), and
sometimes some other file type. The mystery file is always tiny, 3K
(pretty much equivalent to empty, I guess). Never is the "icon"-named file
an actual icon file. Anybody know what the heck is going when I'm trying
to copy to my zip disks and get exactly what I wanted to copy? This has
gotta be the weirdest bug I've ever experienced. BTW, anyone try to email
Iomega's support? All I seem to be able to do is request automated info
files that don't help at all.

While I was sorting some files into folders on a zip disk, I noticed that the

erase the duplicate the original disappeared.
I ran Norton Disk Doctor on the disk, and it said there was a problem with the

Is there anyway of retrieving the data from the disk.
I'm afraid of doing anything more with Norton in case I make matters worse.
Any help will be much appreciated.
