Subject: [Q]Sportster Voice for Macintosh Computers
I've got 2 or 3 questions about the USRobotics Sportster Voice Modem for
Macintosh that I could not get answered via USRobotics' Web Sight. (
Mailto:[email protected], and Mailto:[email protected] are actually "nohuman"
"FaxBack" type services. UUGGHH!)
I was hoping that some Info-Maccer who has one of these modems could answer
my seemingly simple questions.
1) Does the modem come with an international/universal power supply like
all mac items do/should? I travel a lot and will need one. If not, does
anyone know if USRobotics sells one that is compatible/suitable for this
modem?
2) The publicity states "Speakerphone requires external powered speaker
(not included)." Does this mean that it comes with a microphone? Could I
use the speakers that are in my Apple Multiple Scan 15 display? They are
unused since my wife bought me a pair or waycool Apple design power
speakers.
And as a side note (while I'm here) Are you happy with it / its
features/software?
Thanks in advance, and if you'd like to reply directly to me, I summarize
if anyone is interested.

My poor old Stylewriter I died recently. It appears as a short circuit at
the power input, so it systematically blows the 2.5A fuse of the AC-DC
adaptor.
I opened the printer, and there are no obvious damages on the circuit board
(its fuse is ok).
Does anyone have any suggestion (or pointers to relevant information)?
Thank you in advance.

Subject: Apple representation in Greece SUCKS!
I have been using an Apple computer since 1986 and I would not use anything
else... But recently I have been considering other options. The reason is
the poor -although > would be more appropriate- after sales
service provided from the representative of Apple in Greece. The company
name is Rainbow Computers and my problem with them among others is the
following:
When I bought my Mac it came with Greek MacOS v.7.0... Now, It is upgraded
it to 7.5.1. Last year I joine the Internet community and I realised that
System Updates are available to all users for free and with backward
compatibility always in mind. I contacted Rainbow to ask them about the
7.5.3 System Update, if it was going to be released soon in Greece for the
Greek OS, and they told me that this Update is available only for PCIs,
only to the new buyers and even if they would sell it to me -which they
wont- it would not work on my 68040-based Quadra 800. So much for backward
compatibility.
I have access to TAXYTOXO -a BBS set up by Rainbow for exchanging ideas and
small talk with other users, nothing like a software depot, mind you- and I
mentioned my problem there. Some guy who works for Rainbow said that the
cost for such a thing is too big so they are reluctant on doing it... Like
they would do something more than translating the bloody thing!! I mean,
the US Update is created from scratch in the States and, still, it is free
for all users, right? This wise-guy also suggested that if I am so picky
about the OS, I should go ahead and install the US MacOS and forget the
Greek character set etc. Yeah, right!
So, you can see that we are dealing with poor service and money-hungry
attitude... Any suggestions? Pls, e-mail me personally and I will post all
the answers, although I dont think there are other users who experience
these kind of problems...
TIA,

Subject: Bouquets and queries
Firstly I would like to commend a company in it's service and delivery of a
great product. This company would serve as a great model for others to
emulate.
Micromat Computer Systems firstly market a great freebie tool that most
discerning Mac owners will definitely own...Techtool. Based on this product
I ordered a copy of it's bigger brother (Techtool Pro) as well as their
other diagnostic program MacEKG. After my credit card details went to
Micromat I received a message indicating the wearabouts and unlock codes of
both products on the 'net so that I could use them immediately. This was
fantastic as they are in California and I am in Sydney, Australia. The
programs work like a dream and the packaged versions arrived within 2 weeks
from halfway around the world (no 4-6 week waiting here).
Mucho congrats to MicroMat and their fantastic service and products.
Now the queries:
1) What upgrade options are available for a PM 7500/100 to make it faster
hardware wise (ie faster upgrade boards)
2) Why with Quickdraw GX does my fax software die? I cannot get MacCom
Center to work within the chooser and the option that usually is at the
base of the file menu option is missing. Is there anyother Fax software
that can work with QuickDraw GX?

OneClick the toolbar/keystroke macro utility also has buttons that do this
(and hundreds of other things). OC can also save the contents to a QuickDex
or EasyInfo file rather than a straight text file. This makes it very
convenient to search note files.

Subject: discovery -- e mailing netscape search find url's
I was fascinated to use David Ordal's "Personal-Search-Page" submitted
im digest 266. It started my mental juices flowing. Here's what I
discovered.
When you use a search engine and do a find, you may wish to share only
the url of the page construct of the find with a friend through e mail.
This saves you and him bandwidth, maybe not the search engine.
Let's see how to do this and how I fell on a url as an address
construction.
Obviously to all, you can save the page as source and send him this
temporarily search engine constructed page with links on it.
But, you can do something I discovered requiring much less bandwidth,
at least for you and your friend.
Do finder get info on the source saved and copy the constructed url.
Here is an example that I did for a fellow in Italy wanting freeware chess.
http://hyperarchive.lcs.mit.edu/cgi-bin ... ?key=chess
Or better yet, you can use the mail document on Navigator file menu
and delete the document leaving only the address and then e mail that.
Or better yet, construct a web page where you enter the keyword in a
window which is added on the the stuff before chess say, which I believe
David Ordal's "Personal-Search-Page" submitted im 266 does from briefly
looking at some source.
When the person you are helping with a search pastes that in the
netscape file menu open location window or receives that as netscape mail
and jumps to it, the list is reconstructed for him. We have the classic
time space tradeoff, you and your friend are getting low bandwidth or
information requirements, but it is costing someone processor time to
reconstruct the page. I think search engine's processor time is cheap so
this trick isn't "immoral".

Looking for a Mac Wiz
Hello! My name is Alex. I have a Power Mac 6100/66, System 7.5.5.
Last
Monday, a serious problem occurred: I can't use any application that work
with a CD-ROM. For example, when I run Termium (a linguistic data bank), I
get the following error message: "Internal XVT Error: 35533-2368220 Click
mouse to continue." None of my other CD apps will work. Also, if I try to
copy a file from a CD to my Hard Drive, the screen either freezes or I get a
bomb. But I still can listen to Audio CD and the CD's icon always appear on
my Desktop and I can look inside the CD's folders. On the other hand, when
I use the CD-ROM as my startup disk, I can copy the files on my Hard Drive
.
I have tried all the classical problem solvers, i.e. extensions
conflict
analysis, virus check, Disk First Aid, reinstall System 7.5.5, called
Technical Support... Nothing worked. I know vaguely that XVT is a cross
platform of some sort allowing the computer to read CDs, but if it is
corrupted, how do I fix it. I'm desperate for help. Please, save me! I have
a home office and this computer means survival to me. Thanks.

Subject: info-mac directory for old versions of software
There is an increasing number of apps that at some point have ceased to
work on 68000 macs like Plus, SE, Portable, Classic and PB100. I guess that
somewhere in near future similar things start to happen to other 68k macs
and only PPC macs are actively supported.
So I would like to suggest an info-mac directory that contains old versions
that, unlike newer versions, still work on old macs. The directory could be
named something like etc. (It could also include versions
that work only on old Systems).
At the moment the list of such basic net-apps isn't very long:
Anarchie 1.6.0 (2.0.1 crashes)
MacTCP Watcher 1.1.0 (ping crashes 2.0)
MacWeb 1.00A3.2 (1.1.1 E crashes when saving prefs)
MacPPP 2.0.1 and MacPPP 2.01cm4 (the only PPP that works)
NCSA Mosaic 1.0.3
YA-Base64 1.2.0 (1.2.9 crashes)
YA-NewsWatcher 2.0.3b0 (2.3.4 crashes)

This happen because you have installed Open Transport... if you use
*Network Selector* (part of 7.5.5 - generally in Apple menu)... Network
and
MacTCP *magically* appear (instead of AppleTalk and TCP/IP that
disappears).

I think both these problems are related to Open Transport. The newest Apple
System Software installers put in both "classic" Appletalk and Open
Transport. Then one set or the other is made invisible. To switch back and
forth, use the "Network Software Selector" program that it also installed
(probably in the Apple Extras folder).

Subject: Norton broke my mac!
Hello all -
The stubborn guy I am, as well as considering myself somewhat
MacKnowledgeable, I usually do not ask for help, but I'm stumped here. My
PM8500 (Sys. 7.5.3 R2) was running fine, finally, with all sorts of toys
installed. After a year of ownership, I decided it was past due for a
disk defragmentation, and I thought that the (early) problems with Norton
Utilities and PCI Macs were over, so I bought a new copy of Norton 3.2.1.
Put a copy of my Sys. 7.5.3 R2 along with Dr. Norton on a zi p disk,
backed everything up to DAT, restarted from the zip, ran Disk Doctor (it
fixed a few trivial problems -- icons and bundle bits), then Speed Disk.
It prioritized and defragmented and optimized. I restarted and everything
seemed cool. Within a few days, however, problems started appearing. I
was trying out Alpha editor alongside MS Word 5.0, Textures, and a few
others, and Word stopped reacting -- the cursor would change to a watch
and not change back unless I clicked on the document; I would
click-and-drag to highlight, but nothing would highlight unless I clicked
after I released; I would try to open a new file and the open dialogue
would be blank for a full minute before showing me files. If I switched
to Alpha, where the word and Alpha windows overlapped, the screen would
not refresh and a portion of the Alpha file would be missing. I
restarted, and Texture randomizer (in my startups) got "stuck"; never
randomized, and ended up in Applications menu as if it were still
running. I opened a TexEdit file which launched TexEdit, double-clicked
on another TexEdit file from the Finder and ended up TWO 'copies' of
TexEdit in my Applications menu (there's only one on my hard drive -- I
checked). My screen saver (Darkside) was funky too -- it would come on,
but would be BEHIND my stickies and Finder icons! (No, I don't have
Underwear installed!) Now, CDs don't work, VideoPlayer gives me disk
errors when I try to record, etc., etc. I have zapped the PRAM, rebuilt
the desktop, ran Norton Disk Doctor again from a zip (it said it fixed
B-tree errors). I have restarted with no extraneous toys, but the same
problems occur. I have replaced the System, Finder, and System Update
files from my zip. I also ran disinfectant. I am sure that the problems
are due to Dr. Norton with his little stethescope... guess I shouldn't
have trusted that program after all, but seeing as MacTools is no longer
available... Anyway, I guess the two suggestions are: Reinstall system
software, OR, reinitialize hard drive and start from scratch. Neither is
easy, even with the DAT backup, since I've made many changes since that
DAT. System installs aren't trivial anymore either, thanks to Apple, with
the 7.5.2 CD, then the 7.5. Update 2.0 CD, then the Revision 2 floppies,
then the... Does anyone have a suggestion as to what is causing all these
problems, or how to fix them, or why Norton did this to me?

Am I missing something here? Any help would be appreciated.

TCP/IP. I have had very little problem doing this. This problem is not
explained in any of the literature. I have given up on this machine!
Equipment/software: =
Power Mac 7500
Global Village Platinum fax/modem (external)
32MB RAM
System: KanjiTalk 7.5.3 (Ram Doubler 2)
No software not used on the other machines I have set up.
Configure PPP 2.1.4
MacTCP J1-2.0.6
As you know, this is an Ethernet based machine. It is not on a LAN
however. When I install the software, the TCP changes to EtheretTCP. I
enter the address and protocols and attempt to open the PPP, but the
open will not highlight. I have tried reinstalling numerous times. =
What do you suggest?
Sincerely,

Subject: Powermac crashes--why?
Help! My powermac 7200/120 keeps crashing on me! It's usually when I'm
in Netscape Navagator 2.0. The error message says type #11. What does
that mean??? I'm not sure, but it seems like it crashes more often
when I'm browsing sites that have a lot of animation, moving GIF's and
what not. But I don't know, this might have nothing to do with it...
Any feedback would be appriciated! Thanks!

Subject: Quickdraw GX and the HP 870 Cxi Deskjet Printer...
I recently added an HP 870 Cxi Deskjet to my appletalk network (which is
Laserwriter Bridged to the Ethernet network I am using). Because I have
a Laserwriter as well, I would like to run Quickdraw GX. With the
Bridge, I am able to select the Laserwriter GX from the Chooser, and
after installing Quickdraw GX, the Laserwriter works well with Quickdraw
GX.
However, in the Chooser, the HP 870 doesn't show up as an Ethernet
accessible device like the Laserwriter does. I tried the latest HP
printer drivers for that printer (DJ800 ver 9.1.3). However, the 870
still does not show up in the Chooser as am Ethernet device.
I don't think the Laserwriter bridge is the problem, because before
installing Quickdraw GX, I was able to print on the HP 870 Cxi by
selecting it from the Chooser. I think what I need is an 870 series
printer driver that is Quickdraw GX savvy. Can you help?
Many thanks,
Terry Delaney

Subject: Time for Another Mac Game Zine?
Right now there are only a few game news zines or services that pertain to
just Mac Games. Inside Mac Games & Mac Gamer's Ledge seem to be the only
places that serve the overall gaming scene for the mac. MacSport, Mac
Flight Sim Journal, & Killer 3d Mac Games cover the more specific genres
of Mac Gaming. Are there other news sources out there besides the big
general Mac Magazines(MacWorld, MacUser, MacAddict, Mac Home Journal)?
Next Generation magazine also has a token amount of Mac Gaming coverage in
their magazine as well.
My question I pose to Mac Gamer's is this. Is there room for another
general Mac Gaming Magazine, or are Mac gamers content with the news
sources now at their disposal. I'm stating this because I would like as
much info back from Mac Gamer's as possible about possibly starting
another Mac Game e-zine.

Translucent dragging is set only for icons, not for windows. If you want
translucent dragging for your windows as well, I suggest getting "Church
Windows" from your local info mac mirror. It has tons of features/options,
one of which is translucent dragging.

Translucent *icon* dragging on PowerPCs came in with 7.5.3 [? maybe 7.5.1...].
Translucent *window* dragging is not part of the standard System. The
standard System window-dragging behavior is, and always has been, dragging
outlines.

Dear Info-Mac,
I recently installed a Kensington Turbo Mouse/Trackball

is crashing on me with the error message something like
"Navigator Error, Type 11". I realize that Navigator freezes are not

I have to restart the computer each time. I have already cleaned
out my ever-growing extensions folder, and I actually completed
a clean install of my system folder yesterday. Then, NN crashed again.
Now, I'm going to try to re-install NN, but I wanted to check with you

it worked just fine, and this week when it started crashing, is that I
added that trackball. Any ideas? Any help at all would be greatly
appreciated. Thanks.

anyone know if USRobotics sells one that is compatible/suitable for this

2) The publicity states "Speakerphone requires external powered speaker

use the speakers that are in my Apple Multiple Scan 15 display? They are
unused since my wife bought me a pair or waycool Apple design power

I think both these problems are related to Open Transport. The newest Apple
System Software installers put in both "classic" Appletalk and Open
Transport. Then one set or the other is made invisible. To switch back and
forth, use the "Network Software Selector" program that it also installed
(probably in the Apple Extras folder).

Subject: net phones, etc...
Hi! I recently obtained a PlainTalk microphone and am eager to test out a
demo netphone program.
However, here are my problems :
1) Internet Phone version 3.0 requires an FPU with my 68040 mac... how
might I find version 2.0, which
did not require an FPU
2) DigiPhone seems to work, but I am unable to find a list of NetPubs in
which to chat! The
documentation lists a web page address for netpub listings ,but I have
not been able to access it,
since the address is incorrect or has changed.
Does anyone know where I might find an old demo copy of Internet Phone 2.0
or a listing of netpubs?
Thank you much!

Subject: Output Quicktime Movie To Tape
Dear Info-Mac users,
I am trying to output a Quicktime movie to videotape in the last few days but
with no success. The audio is recorded fine but not the video, all I got is a
blank screen. The Quicktime movie is compiled in Premiere 4.2 on a Powermac
8500, with output options set to 320x240, 4:3 aspect ratio, component video
compression, and full frame. The movie is about 12 seconds in length.
When I use the "Print to video" command, I turned on hardware zooming. I also
set color to million colors and select 320x240 resolution to activate a
hardware zooming feature in the 8500 as described in Macworld magazine. I make
sure that my VCR is actually doing the recording by doing a tape test from my
camcorder and I even tried to change cable twice.
Am I missing something here? Any help would be appreciated.

Pls post the following query:
I've experienced a sudden and strange problem with my PowerBook 190cs. It
refuses to wake from sleep, except after repeated prodding with the Reset
button on the rear panel. Likewise, the machine will not restart after a
full shutdown. The machine also does not go to sleep automatically after
the specified time of inactivity. I've zapped PRAM, but the problem
persists. I've investigated resetting the power management circuitry, but
have been unable to find the procedure for a 190. I'm running System

Subject: Power Mac 7500 / PPP TCP/IP
To the Hands On Person:
I have asked everyone this question and no one has come up with an
acceptable answer yet. In fact it does not appear that they are even
reading what I write.
I have set up a number of Macs to run Netscape and Eudora using PPP and
TCP/IP. I have had very little problem doing this. This problem is not
explained in any of the literature. I have given up on this machine!
Equipment/software: =
Power Mac 7500
Global Village Platinum fax/modem (external)
32MB RAM
System: KanjiTalk 7.5.3 (Ram Doubler 2)
No software not used on the other machines I have set up.
Configure PPP 2.1.4
MacTCP J1-2.0.6
As you know, this is an Ethernet based machine. It is not on a LAN
however. When I install the software, the TCP changes to EtheretTCP. I
enter the address and protocols and attempt to open the PPP, but the
open will not highlight. I have tried reinstalling numerous times. =
What do you suggest?

Help! My powermac 7200/120 keeps crashing on me! It's usually when I'm

when I'm browsing sites that have a lot of animation, moving GIF's and

Nope.

Translucent *icon* dragging on PowerPCs came in with 7.5.3 [? maybe 7.5.1...].
Translucent *window* dragging is not part of the standard System. The
standard System window-dragging behavior is, and always has been, dragging
outlines.

provide translucent dragging. The suggestions were:
Church Windows
Smooth Windows

Dear Info-Mac,
I recently installed a Kensington Turbo Mouse/Trackball
on my 6100/66 with System 7.5.3. Now, Netscape Navigator 2.02
is crashing on me with the error message something like
"Navigator Error, Type 11". I realize that Navigator freezes are not
uncommon, but I have Navigator Defrost, and this crash is not a freeze.
I have to restart the computer each time. I have already cleaned
out my ever-growing extensions folder, and I actually completed
a clean install of my system folder yesterday. Then, NN crashed again.
Now, I'm going to try to re-install NN, but I wanted to check with you
guys about this. The only thing that changed between last week, when
it worked just fine, and this week when it started crashing, is that I
added that trackball. Any ideas? Any help at all would be greatly
appreciated. Thanks.
