Does anyone know if there's a way of adding bidirectional scroll arrows to
the scroll bars of windows, if you're using a recent version of Aaron?
There was something called Aaron Aesthetics which would do this but it
doesn't seem to work on newer versions of Aaron. Similarly for Scroll2 and
Doublescroll. Bidirectional scroll arrows are *very* helpful if you have a
large screen - I can't imagine why they're not a staple of the interface.

Subject: Eudora email to Filemaker?
Hi all mac-folks,
Some weeks ago I started to use Claris Emailer as my primary email-tool,
thereby replacing my old, trusty Eudora Lite. I really like it, despite
some rather frustrating drawbacks:
- the filing system: one message per file does tremendously increase the
disk-space needed
- booming ram-requirements: 1,5 mb to 0,5 mb for Eudora.
First question:
Some people discussed the use of Filemaker Pro in conjunction with
Emailer to send bulk-mailings. I wonder if FM Pro could also be used as a
mail archiving system for Emailer. I really like to store my mail in a
FM-database. Are there any thoughts or perhaps utilities developped for
this?
Second question:
I need to convert the Eudora-email boxes to a tab-delimited text format
that can be imported to FM. I found that just using the 'Save As' command
in Eudora won't do this job, because some message-information is set
aside. Is there an utility to do this job?

Hi folks,
Ever since I upgraded from Eudora Light 1.5.x to Eudora Light 3.0(beta6) my
IM digests have been appearing as attachments, which when double-clicked
open as Eudora mailboxes, with each posting showing up as a separate
message! That would be OK but I really prefer to use Easy View, and it
just doesn't like 'em that way. I guess I could select all those
individual messages as a group and do a "Save as.." but that's a pain.
They used to just appear in the body of the message. Now the message just
has the abstract/TOC type information, and the rest is in the attachment.
Any idea why this is happening?

My Mac is with modem, but Mac 9500 is on the ethernet.
Usually I called my school network using my modem, then type telnet command.
Or I can use PPP connection.
But all I've done is from Mac to Workstation, like SUN, or HP machines.
I have no experience between Mac to Mac, one has modem in my home

Which software I have to buy ?

Miramar's Personal MacLAN. Windows application (3.11 or 95) that installs
an Appleshare stack on a single PC (I suggest the server).
Downside:
1. Non-Mac interface (but it is going on a Windows machine--what do you
expect).
2. You end up with a lot of files that start with # on the PC. Those are
the resource forks of Mac files transferred to the PC.
3. PC files will not open with double clicking (unless you have your system
recognizing PC file extensions i.e., .xls is an Excel file, and of course,
extensions are used correctly).
4. One PC only to a theoritical maximum of 5 Macs (most people I hear from
are a single Mac in a multi PC world).
5. Only will share Postscript printers on the PC network.
Upside:
1. Super easy to use on either platform once installed. Uses the FInder
and its windows on the Mac, File Manager on the PC. Also works from within
applications.
2. Great for applications that exist on both platforms that share document
formats, i.e, Microsoft Word and Excel. I work on my Mac. Copy to the PC,
can then edit it, and copy back to the Mac and open it and work on it some
more.
3. Inexpensive. Check your software supplier. I picked it up for CAN$199.
4. Works on any PC network, assuming the machines have the capability
(Localtalk, ethernet, etc.).
To sum up, I find it an excellent product and recommend that people check
it out whenever this question is asked.
I have nothing to do with Miramar, other than being a satisfied customer.

I'm not wildly experienced at this, but I am about 2 jumps ahead if
where you are right now
so here goes.
LaserWriter Bridge is a control panel that comes free from Apple that
allows a single Mac to act as a bridge between an EtherTalk network
and one or more printers on a LocalTalk network. It does not require
a dedicated computer, but obviously if the computer on which it is
running is busy, it will be slow. I have two trouble-free
installations and one trouble-prone installation at the moment, all in
the same building. One drawback is that when one computer on a
LocalTalk network is running LaserWriter Bridge, none of the other
computers on that LocalTalk network can use AppleShare over
LocalTalk. See the docs for details.
LocalTalk bridge is along the same lines, but commercial from Apple;
it acts as a two-way bridge so that a variety of devices on the
LocalTalk segment can communicate with the EtherTalk side. If you
only care about printers, you don't need it. Cost around $100, I
think.
I have just ordered (but not yet received) a hardware bridge from
Farallon; they have two flavors, one for 1 printer and one for a
LocalTalk network of up to 7 or 8 devices. The price difference is
only $50 or so, they are both in the $200-$300 range. Ask me in a
couple of weeks and I'll let you know how it turns out... I suspect
that it will be faster and more reliable.
More info: the Apple SW updates web site has a disk image with
LaserWriter bridge plus an updater for LocalTalk bridge. I don't have
the URL to hand, but I think it is under Networking. There's info on
the LocalTalk bridge at
Farallon are wonderful folks who can be found at
.
Hope this helps-

Subject: Stereo on my mac? not really
Hi,
I recently decided to buy a pair of external speakers for my Power Mac 8100
AV. As soon as I got them out of the box, I connected them to the headphone
port on the foot of my monitor, popped a CD in the CD drive and got sound
only from the right channel. Weird. So I fumbled a bit with the plug and
discovered that I can get stereo sound from the thing if I pull the plug
partly out of the port. This reminded me I had had the same problem with my
Walkman headphones a while back. So, decided to solve the problem by
pluging my speakers directly into the sound jack at the back of my mac.
Guess what: I had the same problem there.
I called a friend who works for an Apple dealer and he told me the Apple
jacks are not standard. It appears that a while ago there was _no_ de facto
standard and that Apple just adopted a size for its machines. Well, that
may have been true 10 years ago (hard to believe considering Walkmans have
been around since almost forever and their jack _are_ standard across
companies), but I bought this Mac as a Quadra 800 about 5 years ago and
upgraded it to a Power Mac last Fall. The idea that one year ago Apple was
selling logic boards that have non-standard sound jacks boggles the mind.
It appears there is some adaptor that can solve this very vexing problem.
Anybody has a clue?
Thanks

My PM 7500 unfortunately does this all the time. When it does this, it
means I have NO sound in the finder or any application, even though
everything else seems to works fine. If I restart, it usually goes away.
This is probably the most annoying problem I've ever had with this PM 7500.
Do you have ok sound once you've started up? If so, that's way weird. If
not, then it's probably some nasty system problem like I seem to have.

Subject: IM digests coming as attachments?
Hi folks,
Ever since I upgraded from Eudora Light 1.5.x to Eudora Light 3.0(beta6) my
IM digests have been appearing as attachments, which when double-clicked
open as Eudora mailboxes, with each posting showing up as a separate

Subject: Info-Mac Digest V14 #265
Dear Info-macer,
What I wanna have full control of 9500 in my lab from my Mac at my home.
My Mac is with modem, but Mac 9500 is on the ethernet.
Usually I called my school network using my modem, then type telnet command.
Or I can use PPP connection.
But all I've done is from Mac to Workstation, like SUN, or HP machines.
I have no experience between Mac to Mac, one has modem in my home
the other is on Ethernet in my school.
Which software I have to buy ?
Apple remote Access ? or Timbuktu ?
TIA,

Subject: My Info-Mac to HTML 1.1.0 doesn't work!
Hi,
I'm experiencing problems with the converer for Info-Mac digests. When I
try to convert a file (text from Eudora with guess paragraph off)
application 'unexpectedly quit' for an error type 12. Is that a know bug of
this version or maybe a problem of mine?
regards,
Claudio

I'm not wildly experienced at this, but I am about 2 jumps ahead if
where you are right now
LaserWriter Bridge is a control panel that comes free from Apple that
allows a single Mac to act as a bridge between an EtherTalk network
and one or more printers on a LocalTalk network.
LocalTalk bridge is along the same lines, but commercial from Apple;
it acts as a two-way bridge so that a variety of devices on the
LocalTalk segment can communicate with the EtherTalk side. If you
only care about printers, you don't need it.
There's info on
the LocalTalk bridge at
Farallon are wonderful folks who can be found at
.
Hope this helps-
Ethan
