Subject: [*] Analog 1.92b - Fast, professional WWW logfile analysis
1.92b Updated to the lattest Unix version, providing support for English,
US-English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, and Danish.
1.91b4c Now reads NetPresenz log files! Thanks to Nigel Perry
([email protected]).
1.91b4b Now supports DNS lookups!
Analog is a WWW logfile analysis program. It has the following advantages
over other similar programs.
* It's fast. Very fast.
* It's easy to install and run.
* It's very flexible. The default output will be satisfactory for
most people, but there are over 180 options producing 17 different reports
for those who want to do things differently.
* It can output in 7 different languages, and 3 output formats.
* It produces attractive output that complies with the HTML
spec (and so can be read on any browser).
* It understands MacHTTP, WebSTAR, WebCenter, and NetPresenz log
formats as well as the common log file format, NCSA old-style format and
the NCSA/Apache auxilary and combined log files.
* It should work on any Macintosh and versions are available for
Unix, VMS, and most DOS machines.
* And it's free!
This is a port of Analog 1.92b to the Macintosh. It does not support a
Macintosh style user interface or the Analog form cgi.

Subject: [*] FFT for RISC 1.21
Enclosed is a stuffit archive of version 1.21 of my 'C' source code fft
library. The only difference from version 1.2 is a small change to the
rfftTest.c code. I have also included an executable version of the test app
for people without compilers that want to benchmark their Macs (scroll back
to the first output line for the timing results.) The library itself is
unchanged.
Very-Fast Fourier Transform routines. Routines are provided for the real
and complex forward and inverse transforms. I coded these to optimize
execution speed on a PowerPC processor. Also included are some simple test
programs which time the FFTs. Compiled with Metrowerk's Codewarrier 8, my
PowerMac 8100/80 executes a 2048 point real transform in about one
millisecond. I would definitely like to know the timing results with other
compilers and computers. Warning- treat this code as untested. Before you
use these routines in a program, be sure to test them for latent bugs.
1024 Point complex (FFT+IFFT)/2 timings with best optimization:
0.8 ms. Powermac 8100/80, CodeWarrier 8. 0.47 ms. Powermac 7600/120,
CodeWarrier 8. 0.27 ms. PowerTower Pro 180e, CodeWarrier 8. (This last
computer also yields identical timings for double precision 1K FFTs. 604e =
FAST.)
For comparison, this is what Intel lists for their Signal Processing Library:
0.65 ms Intel Pentium-Pro at 133 Mhz.
Revision version 1.21:
line 126 of rfftTest.c corrected.
Revisions version 1.2:
I now store the Nyquest point of the real transform where the 0 for the DC
term's
imaginary part used to be. !! WATCH OUT FOR THIS IF YOU USE rfft !!
Added the real inverse Fourier transform.
Revisions version 1.1:
Re-arranged to put fft routines in a shared library and changed source file
name to fftlib.c.
Removed some ugly optimizations that are no longer needed for CodeWarrier.
This code is public domain, do anything you want to with it.

Subject: [*] Johns WP Outlining 5.1
This major upgrade provides what may be the most competent overall
writing/outlining engine available on the Mac. Version 5.1 of these
WordPerfect outlining macros substantially expands the feature set, as well
as offering more robust operation and optimized speed.
My design goal was MORE 3.1, widely regarded as the best outliner ever
written for the Mac. I have matched that program's outlining functionality,
while paying careful attention to interface, ease of use, and integration
with the rest of the WordPerfect Mac environment.
New features since v. 5.0.1:
+Outlining Mode indicator
+Add Level command
+Shorter status prompts
New features since v. 4:
+ automatic level control
+ comment boxes (speaker's notes)
+ automatic cross-referencing of outline topics
+ variable levels of indent
Features maintained in this version:
+ indentation of each entire outline topic to its proper level
+ collapse any topic (hide its subtopics), of the outline to the right of a
chosen level
+ fold any topic (hide all but the first line), or fold all topics to the
left of a
chosen level
+ change the entire outline to plain or styled text formatting with one
command, using the level-specific style sheets
+ sort topics alphanumerically or numerically
+ mark topics for a table of contents, maintaining separate levels of
indentation
+ change the auto-updating labels to text, so you can export the outline
into another program
+ change the outline into plain text, so you could start a paper as an
outline, edit it in that form, and then convert to regular text
+ check the entire outline for logical structure
+ point-and-click moving and copying of topics
+ cloning topics within an outline or among different outlines
+ user-definable styles unique to each level
+ ability to gather topics in any order, and paste copies of them anywhere.

better blend in with the Aaron window interface.
What's NEW in Scrollites 2.0:

Window headers for Aaron 1.4 to replace the horizontal stripes. (Sorry, I
can't get it to work in Aaron 1.5 & 1.5.1 yet...if anyone has a clue for me
please let me know and I'll release an update.)
Scrollites needs a monitor with at least 256 colors. Included are 2 sets,
one for Aaron 1.4 and one for Aaron 1.5. (& 1.5.1). Check to see which
version you have installed before installing Scrollites, and use the
corresponding Scrollites file. Please don't forget to work on a *copy* of
Aaron on the desktop....Don't work on an installed Aaron.
=C4 Important Note: In this patch, I have replaced the Apple Menu icon with =
a
purple glassie apple. If you wish to keep your original Apple Menu icon,
simply double click on the "ics8" and/or "ics4" icons in the Scrollites
window and select the second icon, resource # -16386, and select "Clear"
from the EDIT menu before installing Scrollites. Whether or not you save
the changes made to the Scrollites file when you're done installing it is
up to you....But if you do save the altered file, I ask that you do not
distribute it or pass it along to others. In this case, you might want to
work with a copy of Scrollites for any changes you make, and save the
original for distribution. : )
I've had tremendous response from Scrollites 1 and I thank all of you who
wrote with your comments, suggestions, questions and recipes. A number of
folks asked for glassie window widgets, so here they are.
Scrollites is shareware, $2....If you have paid your shareware fee for
Scrollites 1, Scrollites 2 is free. If $2 is too small of a check to write
or you're just not into the shareware fee thing, that's cool.....a letter
will do as well. I'd love to hear your comments, suggestions, questions,
life story (in 10 words or less), whatever.
Check out "BluSkyIcons" #1-5 wherever fine icons are downloaded.

Shareware: $20 for full version
Skittles is the hottest action-puzzle game for Macintosh! It's two-player
addictive strategy, with lightning-quick attacks to punish your opponent
and a plethora of intelligent computer enemies. It has been called "the
best shareware game I've ever played," "fantastic," and "worth every penny"
by the many registered users. Try Skittles today!
WHAT IS IT?
Skittles is an action/puzzle game for one or two players! You control
genetically altered Skittles which fall from the sky, trying to keep them
from stacking up to the top of the screen.
The Skittles engineers have recently been experimenting with new flavors
and colors. One of the more psychopathic scientists decided to alter the
Skittles' formulas through genetic mutation. The first test batch was
produced, and a teeming, jiggly mass of coagulated, living Skittles
appeared. They quickly began to multiply and pile up into large groups. As
the scientists fled screaming from the building, a few clever minds noticed
that the Skittles were highly reactive. When four of the same type of
Skittle touched, they would instantly vaporize.
There's only one hope left for the Skittles plant, its workers, and the
small city that they inhabit. Vaporize the Skittles before they run rampant
and destroy everything in their path! You are the only hope left before
they crush the entire city.

Also, If it isn't for such a card, I have a wee bit of a delimma.. I have

Subject: [Q] scanner one-click faxing?
Hi all.
My brother uses a PPC with system 7.5.3 that is connected to an Epson
ES1200C scanner and a Global Village modem. The scanner came with
Scantastic software, and the modem came with GV GlobalFax. Both software
packages work well independently, but together they require an endless
series of settings, dialog boxes, and decisions in order to send a simple
fax off the scanner's glass.
How do I make this whole process more intuitive? Ideally, I would like
something as straightforward as the MacOS launcher. Are both software
applications totally scriptable? Would that work? Does anybody know of
pitfalls? Perhaps there's an intuitive shareware front-end that would put
3-4 big buttons on the screen, such as "copy", "fax out", "do OCR" and
"save as a file". How about the front-ends bundled with some OCR packages?
I hear that Xerox TextBridge does something like this. Is it any good?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. TIA.

Apple Canada's pricing policy is set differently from U.S.
I am a developer; at WWDC they announced a big cut for developers.
This did not apply to Canadians. When Guy Kawasaki was asked
"so what..." his response was "use a friend in the U.S."
Even though this recommendation was a violation of our developer agreements,
I suspect many people did.
The really sad thing is Mac marketshare in some markets in the world is
much higher than in the U.S. Too bad they don't support their internation

I, too, have found this with my LC630 and 15in monitor.
I have to admit that I do not understand why this should be!
But, to cause further mystification, here is another interesting
point about this.
There is a certain colour which the TV will 'blast through' (it
is a kind of dirty dark green on mine when using 256 colours).
If you have pixels of this colour in, say, a picture then you
will see portions of the TV through it.
(Try looking at the 256 colour palette in Clarisworks if you
want to find the colour yourself - make sure the TV window is
behind where the palette appears).
If you have a whole screen size window full of this colour then
you can see the whole TV screen. This even happens in the two
modes which do not allow you to view TV!
Anyone know why, then, it should not allow you to view TV as
normal when in these modes if it is quite possible to see it
through this colour?

1. Not true in my experience. Once, they sent me a fan.
2. In general, APS provides excellent service. All of my problems,
except the case in #1, were handled by sending me a new, sometimes
upgraded, piece of equipment in exchange for the malfunctioning one.

I'd like to add another warning about APS to this.
APS Technologies offers a 5-year warranty on their drives, which sounds
great. But have a care for the fine print: this warranty includes shipping
ONLY in the continental US. So, if you're Canadian and buy an APS drive which
goes bust after a year and a half, you have to pay for return shipping of the
drive to APS. This can be quite expensive. I had an APS drive which went
dead 13 months after purchase, and I discovered that shipping the drive to
APS and back cost me more than half the price of a new drive of the same
capacity.

Is it likely that I need new CD-ROM software, or is it possible that the

If you rebuild with all extensions off, then it'll rebuild again the next
time extensions are on, because Macintosh Easy Open (an extension) adds to
the desktop file info about what applications can handle what kind of
documents. Since it wasn't installed on the first rebuild, it triggers the
second.

I was sceptical that I would see any value with Emailer, but now I am

consideration to the next upgrade!
What is the most efficient way to use the program?
I have already used Eumorpha and converted my Eudora files over. I have
also moved it to a much smaller partition (my first choice resulted in a
20 meg folder, moving to the smaller partition reduced that to 7 megs).
I do not like the use of individual files, for the above reason. There
should be a way to archive a batch of files into one file. Eudora can do
this with ease.
The filtering that appears in the address book should be available in the
other windows as well. That is a good feature that is currently in the
Microsoft Internet Mail and News program.
However, on the whole, and excellent program.

Hi,
After upgrading my Centris-650 to system 7.5.5, I am no longer able to

Chooser, the attached printer does not appear in the list in the

This problem even persists after dissabling all extensions not required for
printing over an AT-network, so an extension conflict is not the likely
cause. However, printing works fine if the Mac is started-up from an
external harddisk running system 7.5.2. Re-installing the printer driver
and the system software did not solve the problem either.
Could the problem be related to the fact I am _not_ using OT? Is there a

is compatible with 7.5.5?
Thanks for any help you are able to provide,

Except for the model of Mac you are using, that is exactly the situation I
am in. The only difference is, I have been unable to get my machine to
recognize the server. However, there are some tech support people here
who feel that insisting on a single platform is counter productive, and
they have provided some underground support. I have also done my best to
sell the idea that it is necesary to have a Mac around that can receive
e-mail, as staff often receive documents from universities or other places
that use Macs, and someone has to be able to translate them. To that
effect, I always maintain the latest version of MacLink PLus, which also
enables me to send and receive WordPerfect Documents to and from
PC-burdened colleagues here. I also tout my ability to handle binhexed
files which arrive here with a fair amount of frequency.
That said and done, here's how e-mail is handled. I got an e-mail account
set up for me on our main Unix server. This wasn't too hard, as everyone
here has accounts for storing and retreiving files. In addition, most of
the system administrators keep e-mail accounts on the Unix servers because
they find them more flexible than GroupWIse. I then got a frieindly
sysadmin to configure the main GroupWise server so that my address was
aliased to this Unix account. I appear in the Department Address Book as
MIME:[email protected]. GroupWise calls this an external address.
Not all sysadmins know that external addresses can be programmed into the
GroupWise address book. I use Eudora Pro to read my mail. Every so often
the system goes bonkers (the Unix system, not my Mac) and Eudora can't find
the server. In that case I telnet to the server and use pine to read the
mail. This solution might not work for you, as it depends on your LAN
being based on a certain amount of Internet capability. Another possiblity
might be to find that friendly sysadmin and get your GroupWise account
aliased to your personal account. If you have Internet access at work, or
they'll let you use a modem, you can then receive all your mail through
your personal account. The most important part is finding that freindly
sysadmin. They are out there! Good luck!

I'm not entirely sure what you're after.
If you're wanting to get the RGB value of a color within an image, then any
number of graphics packages can do this, from Photoshop [$$$$] to
GraphicConverter [$]. They, of course, offer extensive editing
capabilities.
If you want to get the RGB value of an arbitrary thing on your screen, then
you may want to look at:
Which will give you a little eyedropper that you can use to ascertain the
RGB value of any pixel on your screen. This doesn't provide any editing
capability, though I can't imagine why you'd need editing capability in
this case.

Subject: Weird File Server Problems
Greetings, Mac Gurus -
Long-time reader, first-time poster, love the list, yadda yadda yadda,
blah, blah, blah.
I'm writing on behalf of a friend who is experiencing growing frustration
with his server. He's no dummy with Macs himself, and has tried everything
he can think of, but I'll let him describe the problem himself:
> This is a problem which has existed before, but has increased lately.
> We've added no users and changed no software to account for the
> increased occurrences of the problem which, succinctly, is:
>
> There are six of us using a central server, running Apple's File Server
> software. When any of us creates a folder on the server, it is often
> locked to everyone else, even though several of us use the same user
> name and password and all our sharing preferences are set fully open,
> people can see all and change all.
I haven't included any of his hardware details, because this sounds like
strictly a software problem. I can't help but feel this somewhow relates to
his reference to the fact that they all use the same user name and
password, and the server is somehow balking at this.
They're all runnning versions of 7.5.x, and I'm perplexed by his statement
that the problem is getting worse. He's across about 50 miles of ocean,
otherwise I'd have a little more hands-on experience to tell you about.
If anyone can offer any insights, please reply directly to me,
[email protected], as I am currently about three months behind in my
digest reading! I will of course summarize to the list if it seems
appropriate.

Subject: Windows/Mac internet games?
hi there!
A friend of mine who lives 1500 miles away uses a 486-based Windows machine
running Windows 95.
I'm using a Mac Performa 630,
We were both wondering if there are any games (either board games such as
chess or arcade-type games)
that we could play over an internet connection...
We're really intrigued with the idea of duking it out over our 28.8 kbs net
connection...
Anyone know of any cross-platform games we can try?

Subject: Yikes! Modem connect problem with GV platinum!
I have a Global Village Platinum 28.8K modem (external, not the comm slot
one) on my PowerMac 7500 with system 7.5.3. For a long time, I've
connected using FreePPP (I'm using the most recent now, 2.5) and I
generally get the "connected at 115,200" message when I log in, due to the
data compression setting, I'm guessing. Recently, I updated to the newest
firmware from GV, and changed my modem init string to
"AT&F1M3L2E0W2S95=45S0=0&D3S7=60" (I added the M3L2 myself, to shut the
darn speaker up during the dialing, one fo the only pieces of modem
commands I know) as someone strongly suggested on the MacFixit website
(formerly Sad Macs Update page). As the post on MacFixit said, I would see
the actual modem speed in FreePPP when I log in from now on, instead of
115,200bps. But now it says 14400 every time! Why can't I log in at
28.8K? Does anybody know what this cryptic modem init string means? Is
the init string causing my slow connection? Or is it the firmware update?
A PowerMac at 14.4K. It's pathetic. Thanks for any help, folks, and
please excuse the gratuitous use of parenthesis!

Photoshop graphics are bitmaps (like MacPaint), while the graphics in
Pagemaker, Illustrator, and Freehand are line drawings (like MacDraw, or
the the "paint" and "draw" layers in Superpaint). There is no easy way
around this and you get the same effect when pasting into Powerpoint. If
your Photoshop art is simple you could try pasting it into Illustrator,
Freehand, SuperPaint etc and cutting to the Draw layer. That sometimes
works okay.

1.91b4b Now supports DNS lookups!
Analog is a WWW logfile analysis program. It has the following advantages
over other similar programs.
* It's fast. Very fast.
* And it's free!

+ ability to gather topics in any order, and paste copies of them anywhere.

simply double click on the "ics8" and/or "ics4" icons in the Scrollites

"URL Runner FMP3" is a FileMaker Pro 3.0 database for collecting, storing,
sorting and launching URLs. "URL Runner" will launch an URL from a record
at the click of a button with whatever application is set as the helper
application in "InternetConfig" for that URL type. "URL Runner" will also
automatically get the URL and page name from Netscape or Internet Explorer
and put them into a new record of the database using AppleScript (this can
be done with FileMaker in the background if you have OSA Menu running), or
links may be dragged directly from your browser into "URL Runner."

TIA.

This did not apply to Canadians. When Guy Kawasaki was asked

Even though this recommendation was a violation of our developer agreements,

The really sad thing is Mac marketshare in some markets in the world is

I had an APS drive which went
dead 13 months after purchase, and I discovered that shipping the drive to
APS and back cost me more than half the price of a new drive of the same
capacity.

Could the problem be related to the fact I am _not_ using OT? Is there a

who feel that insisting on a single platform is counter productive, and
they have provided some underground support.

This doesn't provide any editing
capability, though I can't imagine why you'd need editing capability in
this case.

Subject: Software demonstration solutions
I am looking for a solution that would allow demonstration of applications
in a classroom situation from an instructor's station and have the
instructor's display contents displayed on student positons.
The lab is a High School computer lab, and as such there is not a lot of
money for upgrades. The Instructor's position is a LC5200, (there is a new
Power Mac 9500 on order for the instructor's station) the student positions
are LC5200's, LCII's and LCIII's. The 5200's will have 8 or 16 MB RAM, the
LCII's and LCIII's will have 4 to 8 MB RAM.
All computers are connected on an Appletalk network.
Any ideas? Is this possible? Or is this classroom doomed to using video
display solutions to extra monitors or TV sets connected to the
instructior's position.
I would appreciate any help or ideas.
TIA

Subject: uninstalling applications [Q]
Hey does anyone out there know of an uninstaller for the mac? ie a
program that you run before you install an application, and it will
remember the changes made to the hard drive, and if you don't like the
thing you installed, you can just run the uninstaller program again, and
it will delete the program you installed completely.
I don't like finding lurking "bits" of applications in the system folder...
Thanks. Please send me a copy of your reply by Email as well as to the
mailing list.

Subject: web questions
Couple of questions:
1. What's the best program for reducing the size (digital) of images.
I've saved the same image in Photoshop and in Graphic Converter time and
again and have found that it is smaller with Photoshop. I then make
the image transparent (even choosing "none" as my choice of transparent
colour) to reduce it further. I'm really impressed when I find sites
which have attractive images of sizes 100 - 200 bytes.
2. I recently saw an ad for a program which uses the 216 "safe" internet
colours. Anyone know what safe means in such a context?
3. I'd like to acquire a reasonable collection of screen fonts to give
my web pages a more professional appearance. Would appreciate any
recommendations.
TIA

That sometimes
works okay.
