Aaron Font is a small system extension which changes the application font
>From Geneva to Espy Sans. This means where in most applications where you
would see Geneva, you now see Espy Sans. This gives your computer more of a
MacOS 8 look. It works great with Aaron, the interface tranformer by Greg
Landweber and Edward Voas, but it can also be used without it. It also
transforms the balloon help font into Espy Sans. It looks great! Its

---begin previous abstract---
This is a patch for Apple HD SC Setup 7.5.3 that allows it to recognize
non-Apple drives. I threw it together in about 5 minutes using ResEdit,
ResCompare, and info from

This patch may be distributed on the info-mac CD-ROM.

This time I tested the patch, and it works, but it is only guaranteed to
work with the version from the above location(and even the I can't

Subject: [*] bibtex 1.11 (fat)
Here's an updated version of BibTeX. The main change is I fixed a nasty
lurking 68k only crashing bug. See the readme for more details.
BibTeX is the bibliography handling tool related to the TeX/LaTeX
typesetting system (available on almost all conceivable OS platforms).
When a document is typeset with LaTeX, an auxiliary file (with extension
'.aux') is generated. This auxiliary file contains, amongst other things,
a list of references (to books, articles, research reports, web-url's,...)
cited in the original document. BibTeX takes this list, together with the
name of a style file (extension '.bst') and a list of bibliography
databases (extension '.bib') which are also given in the auxiliary file,
and produces a wonderfully formatted list of references which the LaTeX
system subsequently (and automatically) appends to your typeset document.
Hence BibTeX is really not at all useful without TeX/LaTeX (there are
several freeware/shareware/commercial versions for the MacOS: OzTeX,
CMacTeX, DirecTeX Pro, Textures). In fact this port of BibTeX is now
distributed with OzTeX 2.x. It is useful to have a good text editor which
knows about the particular format of LaTeX documents: on the Mac, the
editor Alpha is indispensible in this regard, both for editing and for its
apple-event communication with the various parts of a LaTeX system.

Subject: [*] Bubblomania
Bubblomania is a cool action-game, in which you have to catch bubbles
using the pin on top of the screen. There are different kinds of bubbles
: bad ones that you should not catch, bubbles with bonus points, bubbles
containing lasers, a bomb or an extra pin and a few other bubbles which
have much control over the game. You can move the pin with the left and
the right arrow keys, fire lasers (if you have any) with the spacebar,
and explode a bomb with the down arrow. It's a fast game, topscores can
only be obtained by concentrated and cool players.
Hardware requirements :
Minimal requirements are a 68020 Mac with 256 colors, a 640x480 screen
and 1600 KB of RAM. The game will look much nicer with thousands of
colors on a fast Mac, but you'll have to give it 2400 KB of RAM.
System requirements :
I think Bubblomania needs system 7 or higher. (I don't know if it works
under system 6, if it does, please let me know.)

Subject: [*] Caveman Sound System version 1.1
This is the long overdue upgrade to the Caveman Sound System to version 1.1.
It should replace previous versions of the library (caveman-sound-10.sit.hqx)
The following is an excerpt from the accompanying README file that describes
what the library is and what is new in this release:
What is The Caveman Sound System?
The Caveman Sound System is a high-level library of C routines for playing
sound on the Macintosh. These routines were designed with games in mind,
but could be used for other purposes as well. They have been included in
my own products such as PowerPong, and I indend to use them in future
projects.
What's New?
A few new routines have been added since the initial release as follows:
CMSGetChannelVolume - Returns the volume on a sound channel.
CMSSetChannelVolume - Changes the volume on a sound channel.
CMSOpenSoundTool - This is a new method for initializing the sound system.
It performs the functions CMSInitSound and CMSOpenAllChannels. This is now
the preferred method for initializing the sound system.
CMSPlaySoundPriority - Plays a sound with a given priority on any sound
channel.
CMSSetToolVolume - Increment the volume on all sound channels.
In addition, the following enhancements have been made:
- Better support for PPC machines.
- Added double buffer support for faster sound playback on machines
that support it.
- Added stereo sound support in channel allocation for Macs that
support it.
- Compiled libraries are now part of the distribution.

-Access from ccMail by simple key press.
-The ability to form groups of names and address a message to an entire
selection at once.
-Quick access to commonly used groups.

number of new mysteries it can solve is limited only to the imagination of

Subject: [*] Decoder v1.1
This is a drag and drop program that will decode either Base64 (MIME) or
UU encoded messages. Just drop the files onto the application and it will
determine the correct encoding scheme and decode accordingly.
Requires: System 7, PowerPC or 68020 machine.
The highlights...
It can handle files of any size, yet still has low memory requirements.
It is faster that other similar programs.
File segments do not have to be concatenated prior to decoding.
Handles "imperfect" files better than any other UU or Base 64 decoder.
Handles multi-part files.
Automatically sets file type and creator upon decoding.
Can open decoded files automatically if desired.
Handles files that have been concatenated by a newsreader.
New for version 1.1
No longer overwrites decoded files
Provides an option to delete files that have been successfully decoded.
I am sure you will find the Decoder to be the easiest-to-use, fastest,
most robust UU and Base64 decoder available.

Distress 1.0
created by Dave Greenawalt
Distress is a True Type font that I created in Fontographer. I got the
idea for this font after working as a T-shirt designer for some time.
Many of the design I created had a distressed look to them. Basicly I'd
take a laser print of the type and crumple it up so the toner would pop
off in some areas. I'd then stick it in the camera and shoot it. I made
this font to save me time and get a more controled look to my designs. I
hope you like it.

for all those who are new to the internet (and may not even have made a

It's easy to follow, and installation instructions are included. It's not a

Archive name: mac-ftp-list418.hqx
category: communication, text
This is the latest {Nov 1, 1996} version this report and should replace
the previous version of mac-ftp-list.txt.
This is a update {Nov 1, 1996} to Mike Gleason and Bruce Grubb's Mac FTP
list. It lists over 200 mac anonymous ftp sites (some with notes), over
65 Mac web pages, and contains some instructions on how to use anonymous
ftp and find files as well a format chart showing which programs
decompress and decode which files. Also there is a section on how to
use certain files. This archive contains both the text and html versions.
Please note that the html part is actually four crosslinked files:
mac-ftp-list.html, ftp-list.html, www-section.html, and site-notes.html
that require HTML Browser such as Lynx, Mosaic or NetScape to view.
Must be in a monospaced font to be readable; Courier 10pt is recommended,
though Monaco 9pt or a PC equivalent can be used instead. Needs StuffIt
Expander or equivalent {unsitins.exe} to decompress.

MailConverter is a utility which converts disparate mail and mail-like
formats into sendmail format, suitable for use with Eudora or Z-Mail. It
will also create and burst digests, and import a few kinds of nickname
files. It can be used in conjunction with Eumorpha to import all
supported formats into Claris Emailer.
MailConverter handles the following formats:
Claris Emailer filed mail (not the In Box or Out Box)
mmdf mail files
babyl/techmail mail files
America Online mail files
LeeMail mail files
Pine mail files (both Unix and Dos)
Elm mail files
MacEMail mail files and nickname folders
PopMail mail files
eWorld mail files
Windows Eudora mailboxes (even with DOS eol)
Ricemail mail files
TeleFinder mail files
Genie mail files
NewsWatcher save files
Gnus save files
NN save files
MailConverter is freeware.
This version fixes a bug that can occur in AOL file conversion when the
file being converted includes the complete contents, including headers,
of another AOL mail file.

Subject: [*] Out Of My Depth 1.0
Out of My Depth is an extremely simple application suite for quickly
changing the depth of your main monitor without the memory hassles and
conflicts of INITs and Control Panels. I wrote it after a system upgrade
left my previous depth changer freezing and dying.
To use:
Just put the two applications in the Apple Menu Items folder in your
System Folder. That's it! You simply select the appropriate application
>From your Apple Menu to change depths. No problem!
Notes:
Out of My Depth is Power PC only. It will not run on 68k Macs. Sorry,
but that's the way things are going, and I don't have the time to make a
fat binary. Although, if there's enough demand... There are currently
only OOMD versions for switching between 8 bit and 16 bit colour. I
don't know about you, but I rarely need any other depth. If you need
other depths to be supported, please let me know and I can whip a new
application up for you pretty quickly. OOMD does not save your screen
depth over a restart. I like to start up in 16 bit colour all the time,
and only change to 8 bit when really necessary. To save a depth change
over a restart, I'm afraid you'll need to resort to the Monitors control
panel...

This is Synchronize! 3.4.3, a file synchronization utility.
As a way of introducing you to Synchronize!, you may use its basic
file synchronization and backup features FREE. Decompress this
Compact Pro archive and try it out. The many advanced features
of the program may be demonstrated with folders which contain
less than 400K. Unlimited use of the advanced features requires
the purchase of the program, which is $29.95, plus shipping.
As an example, you can use Synchronize! to connect to a remote
network with AppleTalk Remote Access, log on to a file server,
synchronize or backup some files, log off the file server, disconnect
ARA, and put a PowerBook to sleep or shut down your Mac. All this
can be scheduled to happen at night or at any preset time, once or
peridically, without anyone present.
Synchronize! is a great way to keep your work-in-process backed up on a
second hard drive or a removable drive. Set it to copy those important
files at lunch, or the end of the day, and you're always safe from a hard
disk failure. Synchronize! is quick, too, because it copies only the files
which have changed.
Features include:
> Accelerated for Power Mac.
> Apple Guide - step by step instructions (System 7.5 only)
> Drag and drop - set folders by dragging from the desktop (System 7.5 only)
> Hierarchical display of files to be copied, like the Finder
> Selection of files or folders, by full or partial file name,
file type, creator, and label.
> Easy one-way backup, with deletion of old files
> Copy AutoDoubler files without expanding them
> Conflict checking
> Synchronization of deleted files
> Use aliases to group certain files and folders to sync
> Optional verification
> Automatic synchronization at any time, once or periodically
> Launch Synchronize! automatically, when sync is needed
> Automatic connection to server disks, using File Sharing
or AppleShare
> Automatic entry of Remote Access and server passwords, so you
don't have to be there to enter them
> Automatic unmounting of remote disks
> Automatic disconnection of AppleTalk Remote Access
> Automatic shutdown or sleep when done
> Activity log

=46reeware; for any macintosh runnning system 7.0 or later.
TrueClock? is a small, simple-minded, application (34K on disk, 128K in
memory) that puts on the screen a round clock to show the (system) time. It
is of course movable and resizable. It can be made globally (system-wide)
floating.
You can choose colors (to the full extent available on your system) for
each element of the clock and disable the seconds. Thickness of hands
adjustable too.
New with 1.8: A better looking Design dialog, and a large set of messages
covering many situations including a more sophisticated treatment of system
or disk errors.
Lots of under the hood changes have also led to:
1. CPU usage divided about 3 times.
2. quicker responsiveness to mouse clicks.
3. fixed a problem arising on color systems with antiquated ColorPickers=
.
(thanks to Ken Workman for bringing this problem to my attention).
4. grayscale screens are not confused with black and white anymore.
5. code size has actually been reduced.
Thanks to all users of previous versions for their input!

YAPI is an application that lets the user view and manipulate the processes

This application is the "kitchen sink" where I test the C++ objects that
I've written. It is less of an intentional application than the place
where I test my objects, but it has a few nice features that other users
may want--the ability to kill many processes at once, the ability to kill
background apps, and the ability to kill with extreme prejudice like the OS
does when you press Command-Option-Escape.
The application uses several PowerPlant classes that I've written that can
be accessed from my home page.

my apologies if this has already been suggested...
The easiest method of getting the names of the files in a folder into a
text file is:
1) open the folder which contains the files (and possibly other folders)
>From the Finder
2) choose Select All from the Edit menu
3) select Copy from the Edit menu
4) open a new document in SimpleText (or text processor of your choice)
5) select Paste from the Edit menu
What Copy does in the Finder is to copy the name of the selected file (or
folder). You can then paste this name where it is needed. I use this all
the time when making back-ups of floppy disks so I don't have to type the
(usually long) names nor remember where =9B and other such symbols are...
The above procedure can be automated via AppleScript, if necessary.

David, if everthing is as it should be, you should be able to:
Hold down COMMAND-OPTION-SHIFT-DELETE at startup time.
This should cause the system to ignore the internal hard drive and
attempt to boot from the external drive.
(A valid System folder must be on the external drive.)

Subject: Being Onymous rather than Anonymous
To those of you who post here requesting help and information (as I do
on occasion myself): please be aware that a convenient modern
alternative to receiving the digest via email is to read it on a web
page archive, which is what I've begun doing, and I doubt I'm the only
one. The reason this should matter to you is that many web sites that
archive the digests leave off the email addresses that would appear
automatically alongside the posters' names in the regular version of
the digest. And for good reason: otherwise all people who post to
the digest would be innundated (as if we weren't already) with junk
mail! But if you will leave instructions on how to send email to you
at the end of your letter, those of us who read the digest via web
can send you replies and advice and whatnot.
If you feel--quite reasonably--that you don't want to be innundated
with junk mail (any more than you already are), either, you can fudge
by leaving a corrupted email address followed by instructions for
uncorrupting: e.g. ==> delete the caps
if you intend on emailing me back. (the junk mailers use robot programs
that know how to recognize an apparent email address but they aren't
clever enough to decipher such ruses.
But do leave something at the tail of your message if you want to enlarge
the pool of potential respondents.

Dave Reiser tells me: "Well, I added AutoClock (another extension) to my

care of daylight time automatically, and tells me that it has made the

Everyone else pointed out the difficulties of making a program aware of

Win95 does it correctly...Aigh!

Subject: transparent backgrounds?
Hi all,
I've been trying to figure out this problem for awhile- This might
not be the proper forum, but since it's a cross application question, I'll
give it a shot.
When working in Pagemaker 5.0, Illustrator, and Freehand 4.0, I
often want to place graphics I created in Photoshop on top of background
images. All these programs put a bounding rectangle around the Photoshop
image (if it's irregularly shaped) and fill it in with opaque white. How
can I get rid of it? When working on web pages, I can just make them gif89
files, and solve the problem, but even this doesn't work. I haven't been
able to find any helpful answers in any of the books I have. Pagemaker is
the program I really need to be able to do this in. Any answers would be
greatly appreciated!
