Subject: [*] AliasPalette 1.2.8; alias managing utility

AliasPalette is a freeware utility that helps create alias files
just by dragging and dropping.

Though you can easily make aliases by "control + dragging" in
your Finder window by installing one of those extensions which
enables the hidden Finder feature, AliasPalette offers you more
minute utility that allows you to:

1) Edit alias names as you like.
2) Drop an alias into a preset folder location.

Changes made on version 1.2.8:
Fix a button problem when Aaron or BeView is installed.
Added a few minor improvements under JLK environment.

AliasPalette requires System 7.5 or later, 68020 or greater CPU.
It's fat binary and runs in native both on 68K and Power Macs.

For more details, refere to the attached document.

Enjoy,

Fumio Rokkaku

Subject: [*] ANN: YA-NW 2.3.2 Patch

There is a severe bug in the Microsoft news server software, used by the
public msnews service (msnews.microsoft.com) and some ISP's who have
unfortunately chosen to install this software rather than INN.

The problem arises when NewsWatcher tries to fetch headers using the XHDR
command. Unfortunately, the Microsoft server software incorrectly returns a
response code of 224 instead of the correct 221. NewsWatcher properly
treats this as an unexpected, erroneous value.

I have created a patch for YA-NewsWatcher 2.3.1 to accept the bogus 224
return value. The patch is only needed if you use a news server that is
running the buggy Microsoft server software. No new features have been
added to YA-NW 2.3.2.

BibleBrowser is a friendly program for browsing, reading, and searching the

simplicity that makes it easy to use.

This version 1.01 fixes a small problem in the original release where the
Format command could cause an unexpected quit in certain cirsumstances. It

Subject: [*] Cacophony Generator 1.0

Cacophony Generator is a simple sound playing program that has a few
features which (I don't think) most other programs have. Here's a list of
features:

* Plays back any 'snd ' resources in the System file and any one other file.
* Playback is fully asynchronous - switch out of Cacophony Generator and
the band plays on=8A
* Supports drag-and-drop : simply drag and drop the file containing the
sounds you want to listen to onto Cacophony Generator.
* Can play one sound at once, play them all one after each other, loop
them, or continously loop them.
* Has an option for 'Background Music Mode'. This is great for background
music.
* Only needs as much memory as the largest sound in the file - not the size
of the file (Background music mode requires a little more memory).
* Supports the required AppleEvent suite.

This is my first attempt at programming the Mac. Please let me know what
you think! Thanks.

Announcing the release of CleanResource 2.2! This program removes all names
of resource. To use it, just drag and drop files onto the application icon.

Caution: This program changeing resource's name, it had better that you have
a copy of your file.

Why this program?
Generally when we are developing a software, we give a name for each resource
for identification. But at the moment of distribution, this name is usually
unnecessary (except that you have called the function GetNamedResource or
the similar).

CleanResource is a freeware.

System requirements:
- System 7.1
- Any Macintosh

drive status, modem status and remaining battery time.
* Jeremy's Clock CSM - Displays the current time. Via a popup menu, you
can customize the appearance of the display.

provided by Apple. Via the popup menu, you can select whether or not to
bypass the dialog that appears when AppleTalk is active.
* Jeremy's Battery Time CSM - Displays Apple's remaining battery time on
PowerBooks that are capable of it. It can also "learn" the battery life on
any model of PowerBook, or display the elapsed battery time.
* Jeremy's Temperature CSM - Displays the internal temperature of a
PowerBook Duo or PowerBook 500 series.
* Jeremy's Application CSM - Displays a count of currently running
applications and DA's. Also has popup menu that lets you select foreground
application.
* Jeremy's AppleTalk CSM - Replaces Apple's AppleTalk CSM, but displays
more information.
* Jeremy's EnergyStrip CSM - Replaces the PowerBook or Energy Saver

Subject: [*] Navigator Button Editor 1.1J - Japanese Version

This is the Japanese version of the Navigator Button Editor utility package.

The directory buttons in Netscape Navigator$B%'(J have never served much
use for
me$B%N(J so with a little ResEditing here and there I customized the button
names and URLs to make me happy. I thought others I knew would like to do
the same, so instead of shipping ResEdit instructions out to all my friends
and family, I though that it would be easier, and cooler, to bang this
thing out. So here we are: Navigator Button Editor.

Navigator Button Editor has been successfully tested on Netscape
Navigator$B%'(J
versions 1.1N, 2.02, 3.0/Gold, and 3.01b1/Gold. Future versions of Netscape
Navigator$B%'(J will certainly be supported when available. (It would be
nice if
Netscape would build this function into Navigator!)

Navigator Button Editor is FAT BINARY and has been successfully tested on
Macintoshes ranging from an LCIII with System 7.1 to an 8500 running 7.5.5.
There isn't any fancy code in here so it shouldn't have problems with any
future system revisions.

Subject: [*] Netscape Buttons 1.0

A small utility which allows you to edit the buttons at the top of
Netscape's window. Works only with Netscape -- tested with version 3.0.

In Netscape when you have a web browser window open, there are six buttons
along the top; they have names like "What's New?", "What's Cool?", etc.
When you click on these buttons you are taken to specific parts of
Netscape's web site.

Netscape Buttons allows you to edit these buttons so they have titles and
URLs of your choosing. eg. You could change the title of one button to
"MacWare", and change it's URL to "http://www.macware.com" -- then whenever
you click this button, you will be taken to the MacWare web site. Pretty
nifty, no?

You can still get to Netscape's pages ("What's New", etc), using the
'Directory' menu -- the menu is not altered in any way.

Freeware - email me if you like it!

Subject: [*] PowerMenu v1.1 - Open documents directly into any app

Rumor has it that MacOS 8's Finder will include a pop-up menu for
performing operations on selected items (like Open, Print, Delete,
etc). Windows 95 already has a similar feature. PowerMenu outdoes both of
them by providing these functions as well as the unique ability to open
selected files in the Finder directly into any specific
application. Opening a SimpleText document in Microsoft Word, for
example, is a simple two-click operation: select the document, pop up
the menu and choose "Word". No more messing with dozens of desktop
aliases that easily get covered by open windows or "launch pad"
programs. Do this in front of a Win95 user and watch them turn green.

As if that weren't enough, PowerMenu also lets you maintain a list
of "Quick Access Items" that is available on your popup menu from
inside any application. Keeping items you use frequently in that menu
means you can open them instantly. PowerMenu's pop-up menu is fully
hierarchical, which means you can organize your applications and quick
access items into groups for even faster access. I use PowerMenu
several dozen times every day and I think if you give it a try, you
will find it as indispensible as I do.

PowerMenu is heavily customizable and is optimized for both
Macintosh and Power Macintosh computers, meaning it will run at full
speed on whatever model you use. PowerMenu REQUIRES System 7.5.x or
7.1.x with the Scriptable Finder installed. PowerMenu is $10US
shareware.

Subject: [*] WindowMenu v1.2.1 - Switch quickly between open windows

WindowMenu is a utility that exists to let you do one thing: jump
directly to a specific window in an application. Although I have a big
monitor, I often find myself going through all kinds of contortions to
get to a window I know is open but that is buried under a hundred
others. Applications with "Windows" menus help things somewhat, but
you still have to make the trip to the menu bar.

WindowMenu will pop up a menu of all open windows in the current
application and let you select one directly when you click anywhere
while holding down control keys that you choose. It also lets you
define a hotkey to cycle forward and backwards through all open
windows. I use it every day and I think if you give it a try, you may
too. WindowMenu is $10.00US shareware.

Version 1.2.1 (Oct 28th 1996) fixes the conflict with CopyPaste
when choosing a hotkey for the popup menu by changing the interface
for specifying the modifiers. No other changes.

Subject: .avi player?

Does anyone know of a Mac utility that can play MS Video (.avi) files
directly?

I have an AVI To QT conversion utility, but sometimes I would prefer just
to play the .avi file directly, especially if the file is quite large.

I would think that this should be possible, particularly as the Maczilla
Netscape plug-in has this functionality, but I haven't seen a freestanding
AVI Player.

TIA,

But this only works up to the first 255 characters. So if you've got 20
files, and each filename has 20 characters, you'll only get the first 12
files; 12 * 20 = 240 characters, whereas 13 * 20 = 260, which is over the
255 character limit.

So you MAY need to use an external utility (File Buddy, ListFiles, etc.),
unless you want to do multiple copies.

Unfortunately, this only copies the first 255 characters of the list of
files to the clipboard. If you have more than a few files in a folder, this
is all but useless.

Very easy. Just insert the disk, open the folder, and select "By Size"
>From the "View" menu. That folder will then always open in View By Size
mode until a different View is selected for it. If you do NOT close the
folder before dragging the disk to the trash, then the folder will also be
automatically opened when it is inserted again.

Of course, another person using the disk can change the View By settings
and open/close folders, and when he ejects the disk, those changes will be
recorded on the disk if it isn't write-protected. If it's write-protected,
he'll still be able to change the Views etc., but after he drags it to the
trash, it'll revert to the way it was before he inserted the disk.

If your sound file is already in "System 7 sound" format*, then you can add
it to your System file by just dragging it onto the icon of the System
Folder. Don't drag it into the _window_ of the System Folder, drag it onto
the closed icon of the System Folder. You'll get a message asking if you
want to put this sound into the System file; you should say yes. Once
that's done, open the Sound control panel and admire your work.

*How do you know if a sound is in the right format? Easy. Double-click it
in the Finder. If it plays without starting up any programs to do so,
you';re in business. If it doesn't play, or starts up some other program,
then you need to convert it. The program that the sound started up might
be able to do this, or if not, you should get a sound-conversion program
that can. there are several in the info-mac archives.

It's apparently just to keep track of your time zone with respect to
Universal Time (GMT)--e.g, the eastern U.S. is +5, I'm in +6,
etc.--except one would think the Map cpanel would take care of that.

If you want automatic adjustment between standard and daylight time, you
will indeed need another extension. I like AutoClock, because of its
other, more important feature: have it dial the Naval Observatory; wait a
week and do it again--AutoClock then calculates your Mac's internal
clock's rate of gain/loss and applies a correction upon any startup when
it's off by more than one second. No more reason why your Mac can't be
the most accurate clock in the house!

Well, I added AutoClock (another extension) to my system to automatically
adjust the damn Mac clock, which on every Mac I've ever seen gains at least
2 seconds a day. As a side-effect, it takes care of daylight time
automatically, and tells me that it has made the change.

AutoClock has been one of the most well behaved extensions I've ever used.

My $0.02.

As for the tease, one checkbox is easier than 2 clicks on a time display
control.

The way that a volume is displayed when it it is unmounted is the way that
it will be remounted. So open the folder, view by size, then unmount the
volume (by dragging its icon to the trash). Now when this volume is
remounted, that folder will open and be listed by size. You can even close
that folder's parent if you want, and it'll still open correctly.

["Volume" here means any disk and/or partition icon that shows up along the
right side of the desktop, whether it be a hard disk, a hard disk
partition, floppy disk, ZIP disk, etc.]

best bet on finding a copy is to goto babages or egg head and ask them

Also, can anyone point me to a decent primer on MacsBug for non-programmers?

Given the right version of Eudora--I'm not sure which version(s) this is
in; I have Pro 3.0--you can click on the "edit message" icon at the top of
the incoming message window; this lets you edit the message. Then you can
paste the "ftp://..." deal right in the original message, without having to
create this extra, forwarded message. When you go to close the incoming
message, you're prompted to save the changes, or discard them if you want.

[The icon I'm talking about is the second from the left, the pencil. At
least in Pro v3.0.]

I don't specify, but I presume you have an older mac, probably running an
older version of the system software....

In any case, try going to the Memory control panel, and selecting (gosh,
it's been so long I've forgotten the name) 32-bit addressing, or something
like that.

If you don't do this, the Mac can't address any memory over 8MB, so the
extra has been "allocated" to the system for lack of a better place to put
it. Turning on 32-bit addressing lets the Mac address memory addresses
over 8MB, and your system "allocation" will be slimmer after a restart, and
you'll find your "lost" added memory.

You need to turn ON 32-bit addressing in the Memory Control Panel.

Check the Memory control panel. If there's a 24-bit/32-bit addressing
option, make sure that 32-bit addressing is turned on.

If that's not it, do you have virtual memory turned on? I'm not sure what
happens if you add RAM without changing the Virtual Memory Size setting.

Are you using anything else that does special things with memory, like a
RAM disk or RAM Doubler?

The Netscape 3.0 installer places a QuickTime plug-in in the appropriate
folder. There are a few 3rd-party plugs, too, but the one from Netscape
(actually written by Apple) works fine. With it, you can listen to
QT-MIDI as you browse my site. Streaming is supported, which means the
music will start as soon as enough has downloaded to fill the buffer; the
remainder of the file comes in as the music plays. To serve QT-MIDI, the
movies must be flattened, and the HTML is a normal tag.

I've been running Stylescript for nearly two years on my IIci and a Color
Stylewriter 2400. What SS does is interpret Postscript code and send it to
my Quickdraw printer as Quickdrw instructions. So, if t you are printing
is PostScript, you ill get absolutely beautiful output using SS. Two words
of warning: One is that the software uses the Mac's CPU as the postscript
interpreter engine, so CPU and processing power is directly related to
printing speed. The second is that the whole thing is also RAM intensive -
GDT recommends a minimum of 12 Megabytes of RAM (and RAM Doubler doesn't
count).

Just drag them into your Fonts folder (or, if you use Suitcase, include

Sure.

Install the System on it, either by running the System Installer

Open the "Startup Disk" control panel, and highlight the disk you want to
use as your startup disk. Restart. Voila.

>2. Can anyone tell me how to attach an external HD to the SCSI port of a

There shouldn't be any particular trick to this; connect the three devices
thusly:

[mac]--25>25 cable--[zip]--25>50 cable--[external disk]

where the 25>25 cable is the one you got with the Zip drive, and the 25>50
is a standard Mac-to-SCSI cable.

Next, make sure that termination is turned OFF on the Zip, and a terminator
is installed on the external SCSI disk.

Next, make sure that the SCSI IDs on the Zip and the external SCSI disk are
different. The Zip can be either 5 or 6, the Mac's internal HD is probably
0, and the Mac itself is 7, so the external SCSI disk can be 1, 2, 3, or 4
[or whichever of 5 and 6 are NOT being used by the Zip].

Turn everything on. You should be in business.
