Subject: [*] ANN: YA-Base64 1.2.8

YA-Base64 version 1.2.8 has just been released

Yet Another Base64 Decoder version 1.2.8 is a simple droplet designed to
decode MIME Base64 encoded as well as uuencoded files that are dropped upon
it. It assumes that all segments of the original MIME or uuencoded document
have been concatenated into the file being decoded, and that the segments
are in order. It will optionally attempt to recursively decode files until
no further Base64 decoding or uudecoding is possible.

This is intended primarily as a helper application for Yet Another
NewsWatcher. It is not a general purpose MIME document decoder. It is not
even a general purpose Base64 decoder. Neither is it a fast or smart
uudecoder. However, it does handle most usenet Base64 and uuencoded
binaries fairly well, and it can deal with multiple attached files.

YA-Base64 requires System 7 or later. It also requires Internet Config to
assign the proper creator and type to decoded files.

Version 1.2.8 adds the option to move successfully decoded files to the
trash. It also now recognizes and correctly decodes most AppleDouble format
binaries.

Subject: [*] Chess Fonts Package (demo)

The ChessEdit program allows one to more easily format a chess board. Once
one constructs a "key" containing the positions of all the pieces, one need
never again worry about where each of the chess pieces is located on the
keyboard. Included with it is a simple chess font.

Also included is ChesShow which illustrates eleven chess fonts designed by
Ingrimayne Type. ChessEdit and ChesShow program are intended to entice you
to purchase a collection of eleven chess fonts from Ingrimayne Type. As of
the time of this writing, the only place to purchase these eleven chess
fonts is at . The price is $29.95.

This demo version of the package may be distributed freely provided no
alternations, either subtractions or additions, are made to it. In
particular, it may not be included with the distribution of other chess
fonts.

This package should replace any earlier versions of ChessEdit.

GLMStat is a statistical program for analysing generalised linear models.
It provides a macintosh interface but otherwise operates in a similar
fashion to GLIM but with less features (most of which you probably won't
miss). Features of GLMStat are
- spreadsheet style data entry
- Normal, Poisson, Binomial and Gamma models with appropriate links and
specification of convergence and aliasing parameters
- Scatter and Residual plots
- Output of deviance, parameter estimates, residuals and parameter
correlations
- Saving of data files complete with all model specifications.
- printing of data, graph and results.
- Online Help (under the apple menu) and a brief User Manual.
- includes example data files for most examples in two of the texts.

The programme is shareware with a fee of $AUD30 for individual copies or
$AUD150 or $US110 for site licences. ($1AUD is approximately $US0.78). Further
details in the "Read Me" file.
Unregistered copies are fully functional but will expire at the end
of 1997.

Changes in this version are
- fixed problem with double-clicked files not being opened by PowerPC
version (introduced in version 2.0.3)

Subject: [*] MDJ Recap #1 (PDF)

MDJ Recap #1 is a freely-availble compilation of articles from the first
seven weeks (1996.08.12 through 1996.09.27) of the beta-test period of
MDJ, the Daily Journal for Serious Macintosh[tm] Users.

We know that not everyone can participate in our beta-test, and that not
everyone who wanted one of our free ten-issue trial subscriptions caught
some of the articles they wanted to see, so we're making this issue
available to the Macintosh community. It contains stories compiled from 18
feature articles in MDJ, including MacCyclopedia explanatory articles on
Background Printing, Extensions, Meta-Content Format, Font Substitution,
Aliases and File Kinds; two analysis articles on OpenDoc containing ActiveX
and the real story on Apple's K-12 Market Share; four "Press Watch"
articles analyzing reporting on Apple's alleged purchase of Be, the Wall
Street Journal's claimed "corporate exodus", plus analysis of columns in
the San Francisco Examiner and Houston Chronicle.

The issue also has several Macintosh Q&A segments on things like hidden
rebooting keys, plus three highly opinionated articles detaling "Seven
Serious Screw-ups" by Apple, the difficulty of keeping up appearances and a
full-blown, in-depth user-accessible technical look at why BeOS can't hold
a candle to Mac OS 8 outside of theoretical discussions (a must-read for
anyone who thinks such a swap is a good idea).

(As it contains about seven weeks worth of articles without news or
reviews, this issue is six to eight times larger than a normal daily issue.)

This file is in PDF format (Adobe Acrobat) and is fully marked up with
bookmarks, articles and Web links for every URL. It has all fonts included
for maximum readability, and for those who've previewed MDJ in the past,
features a new and much more readable two-column design that fits better on
A4 paper.

MDJ Recap #1 is freely distributable through electronic services, but may
not be modified, excerpted or edited in any way without permission, nor may
it be distributed on physical media without permission. See the end of the
issue for details.

MIDex is a BBEdit extension for doing character set translation.
It contains translation tables for Mac ISO Latin-1 (8859-1) and
Mac DOS (Code Page 437).

The conversion can be done in place, to a new window or the converted
text can be copied to the clipboard. If there is a selection, MIDex
will act on the selection, otherwise it will process the whole window.

This archive contains two extensions:

* MIDex 1.2.2 simplifies the selection of other tables via
a popup menu. Additional tables can be added with ResEdit.
Version 1.2.2 doesn't interpret metacharacters in menu text.

* MIDex 1.3.2 is the "tool version" and therefore requires at
least version 3.5.2 of BBEdit. This tool also supports
additional tables.
Version 1.3.2 doesn't interpret metacharacters in menu text.

MIDex is freeware.

The MIDex extensions and the Mac DOS translation tables
are copyright =A9 by Olav Brinkmann.
The Mac ISO tables are from A. Pirard (ULg) - mai 1992.
The Mac -> US ASCII table is from Brian Clark.

The directory buttons in Netscape Navigator have never served much use for
me, so with a little ResEditing here and there I customized the button
names and URLs to make me happy. I thought others I knew would like to do
the same, so instead of shipping ResEdit instructions out to all my friends
and family, I thought that it would be easier, and cooler, to bang this
thing out. So here we are: Navigator Button Editor.

Navigator Button Editor has been successfully tested on Netscape Navigator
versions 1.1N, 2.02, 3.0/Gold, and 3.01b1/Gold. Future versions of Netscape
Navigator will certainly be supported when available.

Navigator Button Editor is FAT BINARY and has been successfully tested on
Macintoshes ranging from an LCIII with System 7.1 to an 8500 running 7.5.5.
There isn't any fancy code in here so it shouldn't have problems with any
future system revisions.

Subject: [*] PowerMenu 1.1J - Japanese Version

This is the Japanese version of the PowerMenu package.

Rumor has it that MacOS 8's Finder will include a pop-up menu for
performing operations on selected items (like Open, Print, Delete, etc).
Windows 95 already has a similar feature. PowerMenu outdoes both of them by
providing these functions as well as the unique ability to open selected
files in the Finder directly into any specific application. Opening a
SimpleText document in Microsoft Word, for example, is a simple two-click
operation: select the document, pop up the menu and choose "Word". No more
messing with dozens of desktop aliases that easily get covered by open
windows or "launch pad" programs. Do this in front of a Win95 user and
watch them turn green.

As if that weren't enough, PowerMenu also lets you maintain a list of
"Quick Access Items" that is available on your popup menu from inside any
application. Keeping items you use frequently in that menu means you can
open them instantly. PowerMenu's pop-up menu is fully hierarchical, which
means you can organize your applications and quick access items into groups
for even faster access. I use PowerMenu several dozen times every day and I
think if you give it a try, you will find it as indispensible as I do.

PowerMenu is heavily customizable and is optimized for both Macintosh
and Power Macintosh computers, meaning it will run at full speed on
whatever model you use. PowerMenu REQUIRES System 7.5.x or 7.1.x with the
Scriptable Finder installed.

Have you ever looked longingly at some of the very cheap, 5000-or-more
TrueType CD-ROMs that are Windows only, frustrated because they are secret
and forbidden territory for your Macintosh? Or have you acquired a
selection of Windows-only CDs that may have treasure on them if only you
could find a way to mine it? Then rejoice, because _Show Doze Fonts_ will
convert these CDs into cross-platform CDs, at least as far as the TrueType
fonts are concerned. In fact, with _Show Doze Fonts_ these CDs will be more
easily utilized on a Mac than they are on the Wintel platform! _Show Doze
Fonts_ will give you a slideshow presentation of the ".ttf" fonts on the
CD, and when you see one you like, simply press the key and the font
will be converted to Mac format and saved in the same folder that _Show

Subject: [*] Spectrum Analyser 1.1.1

Spectrum Analyser is an application that shows the frequency
content of the audio data currently recorded by the sound input
device you select. You can choose to analyse any sound input
available on your computer. Common ones are the microphone,
internal CD and AV connector. It makes use of real-time signal
processing algorithms to display the spectral data as the sound
is grabbed by the computer. Since version 1.1, standard sound
files (AIFF) can also be opened and viewed frame by frame. It
can be useful to musicians for tuning and viewing the harmonic
content of any instrument. Engineers and students who need a
Spectrum Analyser in the audio frequencies can also plug a wire
terminated audio jack in the microphone input and probe a circuit.
Because it supports various sampling rates and bit sizes,
Spectrum Analyser version 1.1 now runs on all Power Macintoshes
and PowerPC based Performas computers.

Subject: [*] Synk 2.1.0

Synk is a backup/synchronization program that can resolve aliases and
archive old files. It runs on all Macintoshes with System 7 except Mac
Plus, Classic and PowerBook 100.

You can backup a folder full of aliases, making it simple to modify your
backup or synchronization strategy by dropping file or folder aliases into
the defined folder.

It is just as easy to distribute synchronized files throughout a
PowerBook's hard drive by synchronizing two folders containing aliases.

Any number of file types, creators and file endings may be skipped.

Obsolete files and folders can be archived into a folder.

Other features include:
----------------------
- complete log of actions (now unlimited in length)
- obsolete files can be deleted, trashed or archived
- collisions are conveniently placed in a folder on the Desktop

Synk 2 is $10 US shareware. Upgrades from previous version of Synk are free
to registered users.

2.1.0
- fixed a problem with RamDoubler and certain Mac models
- fixed possible launch error by enlarging minimum memory partition
- Apple style grayscale appearance added (can be switched off in preferences)
- unlimited logfile length (log can now be cleared before each run, set
this option in preferences)
- text can be dragged out of the log window and "about" dialog

Subject: [*] WindowMenu 1.2.1J - Japanese Version

This is the Japanese version of the WindowMenu package.

WindowMenu is a utility that exists to let you do one thing: jump
directly to a specific window in an application. Although I have a big
monitor, I often find myself going through all kinds of contortions to get
to a window I know is open but that is buried under a hundred others.
Applications with $B%a(JWindows$B%b(J menus help things somewhat, but
you still have
to make the trip to the menu bar.

WindowMenu will pop up a menu of all open windows in the current
application and let you select one directly when you click anywhere while
holding down control keys that you choose. It also lets you define a hotkey
to cycle forward and backwards through all open windows. I use it every day
and I think if you give it a try, you may too.

Version 1.2.1 (Oct 28th 1996) fixes the conflict with CopyPaste when
choosing a hotkey for the popup menu by changing the interface for
specifying the modifiers. No other changes.

Suppose I have, for whatever reason, rebuilt the DeskTop of my Mac,

that upon the next re-start, the Mac rebuilds the DT again, a
substantial nuisance, because of the startup delay. I find this

Could someone perhaps explain why this happens and -- I hope -- what to

Subject: Getting Ethernet ID

I need to find the Ethernet ID for my (presently standalone) PowerMac
7100. It supposedly has built-in Ethernet (although it still requires a
transceiver). The instructions I've gotten have been to open the TCP/IP
control panel and click on "get info." When I've done that, no Ethernet
address is shown. Another suggestion was to switch to "Connect via
Ethernet." I've tried that via both the Appletalk and the TCP/IP control
panel. In each case, I've been unable to switch to Ethernet, getting a
message such as "An error occurred attempting to use Ethernet. Make sure
your network connections are correct."

I have System 7.5.5 installed with OT 1.1, but I've had similar problems
with other Macs (Quadra 650s and 610s) with earlier versions of the
system
software and with classical MacTCP rather than Open Transport.

Any ideas?

sending

through my NNTP server using both Eudora 1.4 and Netscape Navigator 2.0. I can
receive it without any problems but when it comes to sending a message larger
than 5

You see, in Ukraine, where I live, everything is based mostly on IBM platform,
and my
Internet provider's technical personnel has a little experience in dealing with
Macintosh problems. They told me that I should change the size of MTU (I guess
it
stands for Max. Transmitted Units) to 576 in MacPPP. They said that they had a
similar problem with Windows '95, and resolved it by changing MTU. When I
opened
up ConfigPPP, LCP Options all that I was able to find was Max. Received Units
set to
the value of 1500, but there was no signs of MTU. I changed it to 576 anyway,
but it
still didn't help me.

Can anyone help me, please.

Hi!

I have a naive question. I recently upgraded from system "7.5 update 2.0"
to 7.5.5 (on a powerbook 540c upgraded to PowerPC). When I try to use
MacLink, I now get a message saying that Macintosh Easy open has
unexpectedly run out of memory, even if I have 32 M RAM and no other major
program is open... I think I read somewhere that the thing to do is to
increase the memory allocation of Easy Open by 27 K. Is this the solution?
If so: How do I do that? Normally, this is done by opening the Get Info
window, but when I try with a control panel such as Easy Open (as opposed
to a piece of software such as, say, Word), there is no place to do that in
the window...

Regarding Carl Huben's CD Equalizer and Karaoke Shareware...
Having been out of town for the "War of the Equalizers I am moved
to state that under no conceivable circumstance can a software program
attack and destroy a computer. I mean, after all, what is a computer app
other than a set of instructions that asks the OS if it can do thus and
such, it gets a yes or a no, more or less, and then proceeds. If it
cannot do as it is designed to do the computer just crashes, freezes up or
sits there with an error message. End of story. It cannot damage the inits
any more than it can wash the dirty dishes that you left in the sink before
some of you went on wire to trash a man's very hard and highly competent
shareware.
I, out of curiousity. downloaded the above program just to see what
the story was about and found that it is wonderful...the best equalizer I
have tried for the Mac..a steal at the price, good looking and many
features not the least of which are the large number of eq bands, never
mind devocalizers (for those whose voices need stilling.)
I am a great fan of Info-Mac and feel sorry that this is one time
that some of its population went overboard.
I have no connection with Mr. Huben except to say that I wrote him
a letter stating my admiration for his well -conceived program and wished
him well.
I suggest that you check it out rather than listening to emotional
silliness on the subject. I ran it through its paces for hours looking for
a bug and it worked as per its design. It is worth the money and for those
needing this it is a good choice for Mac users.
I rather doubt it will eat your computer for breakfast. ( I
believe it only likes PCs , toasted with jam...a kind of computer version
vegetarian.) Seriously though, Mr. Huben is very correct in his outrage at
the level and intensity of vitriol at his efforts. I think that the
moderators would be well advised to make a statement that the letters below
are the opinions and claims of the authors and not those of the moderators
etc etc to put the insults and injuries at a distance from any official

Is there any solution?

Although InfoMac Digest is traditionally very liberal in its publication

this computer version of the rhythm method is 99% effective.

But suppose that it is 99% effective, and do a bit of arithmetic. If you

have a better than even chance that the method will fail you at least once.

This isn't working for me. Is there more to it? Where do you drag the
system and finder to? Did you copy them to another disk, delete them from
the zip, THEN put them back, or just move them to another folder on the
zip? Neither way worked for me. I HAVE to set the zip as the start-up
drive in the control panel otherwise the zip gets overlooked at startup.
