The new version of Dicer is here! Dicer is a dice-rolling utility for
gamers. It can roll as many dice as you want as many times as you want,
and all you have to do is hit a few keys. It now keeps a log of
everything you've rolled, so you can backtrack if you missed a few, or if
you're rolling stats and you want to see what you have so far. There's
also a mouse-free mode for speed during an exciting battle or adventure.
But don't take my word for it -- get it yourself!

Subject: [*] Font Clerk 6.1
=46ont Clerk 6.1 is a complete font management utility. It provides the
capabilities to view an entire character set, find key sequences for
those special characters, collect font specs for a given point size,
obtain general information about your system and it's configuration, and
generate reports and font lists for easy reference.
=46ont Clerk 6.1 can be extended through the use of a drop folder called
"FC Scripts =FC". AppleScripts dropped in to Font Clerk's "FC Scripts =FC"
directory, appear in it's "Scripts" menu, allowing the user to expand
the capabilities of Font Clerk. As Apple extends AppleScript, new
capabilities can easily be added through the use of these scripts.
This version of Font Clerk adds several new features and fixes a bug
that surfaces in some drivers when printing the Font Sampler report.
System requirements: Font Clerk 6.1 will run on any Macintosh running
System 7.0 or later (System 7.5 recommended). It supports both color and
black & white monitors.

Subject: [*] HyperTalk QuickRef
The HyperTalk QuickRef stack provides syntax and a quick description for
each HyperTalk 2.3 command, function, property, message, and keyword. The
stack is smaller on screen than the Apple help and it operates considerably
faster, so it's handy to leave it in a corner of the screen while you're
scripting.
If you need more information, you can go from any card in the stack
straight to Apple's HyperTalk Reference stack. The QuickRef is also
completely cross-referenced; click to go to any related HyperTalk element.
You can print a cheat-sheet of syntax, install a quickRef handler to let
you instantly access the QuickRef stack from any other stack, and use the
interactive ASCII chart (which is darn cute, if I do say so myself).
(The information in this stack is distilled from *HyperTalk 2.2: The Book*
by Dan Winkler, Scot Kamins, and Jeanne DeVoto, with additional information
for 2.3.)

Have attached a new training module that I have developed for work. It's
for all those who are new to the internet (and may not even have made a

It's free, so have fun.

the original FORTRAN code. Mac F2C is compatible with CodeWarrior C/C++,
Symantec C/C++, THINK C/C++, and MPW.
Mac F2C is freeware.
The minimum requirements to run Mac F2C are:
- a 68020 CPU or better
- System 7.0 or later
- At least 1 MB of available RAM (2 MB is preferred)
Mac F2C v1.3.2 is a minor update to v1.3.1 which makes it compatible with
the latest version of CodeWarrior (v1.7 from the CW10 CD).
Mac F2C v1.3.2 is distributed as a BinHexed, StuffIt Deluxe archive. You

Subject: [*] MDJ Recap #1 (setext)
MDJ Recap #1 is a freely-availble compilation of articles from the first
seven weeks (1996.08.12 through 1996.09.27) of the beta-test period of
MDJ, the Daily Journal for Serious Macintosh[tm] Users.
We know that not everyone can participate in our beta-test, and that not
everyone who wanted one of our free ten-issue trial subscriptions caught
some of the articles they wanted to see, so we're making this issue
available to the Macintosh community. It contains stories compiled from 18
feature articles in MDJ, including MacCyclopedia explanatory articles on
Background Printing, Extensions, Meta-Content Format, Font Substitution,
Aliases and File Kinds; two analysis articles on OpenDoc containing ActiveX
and the real story on Apple's K-12 Market Share; four "Press Watch"
articles analyzing reporting on Apple's alleged purchase of Be, the Wall
Street Journal's claimed "corporate exodus", plus analysis of columns in
the San Francisco Examiner and Houston Chronicle.
The issue also has several Macintosh Q&A segments on things like hidden
rebooting keys, plus three highly opinionated articles detaling "Seven
Serious Screw-ups" by Apple, the difficulty of keeping up appearances and a
full-blown, in-depth user-accessible technical look at why BeOS can't hold
a candle to Mac OS 8 outside of theoretical discussions (a must-read for
anyone who thinks such a swap is a good idea).
(As it contains about seven weeks worth of articles without news or
reviews, this issue is six to eight times larger than a normal daily issue.)
This file is setext format, and is best viewed through an setext viewer
such as Easy View due to its size. If you'd like to mimic the print/PDF
version (also available), set your styles so that "Hot" is bold-italic, and
underscore is italic. Our setext formatter uses _underlines_ for words
that are emphasized with italics in the PDF version, to avoid
~a~lot~of~tildes~between~words.
MDJ Recap #1 is freely distributable through electronic services, but may
not be modified, excerpted or edited in any way without permission, nor may
it be distributed on physical media without permission. See the end of the
issue for details.

Subject: [*] RPN 2.1 Reverse Polish Notation Calculator
RPN: A small calculator using the reverse polish notation paradigm.
RPN version 2.1 replaces version 2.0 and all earlier versions.
RPN is a small application intended as a replacement for the stock desk
accessory calculator. Displayed in the application's window is an input
register and the stack. No space is wasted displaying keys since input is
done with the keypad. Four operators are supported using SANE: +, -, *,
and /. Floating point numbers are displayed to 8 places beyond the decimal
point. Version 2.1 differs from version 2.0 by pushing the stack up from
the bottom. This makes subtraction and division more easily visualized. A
swap function and balloon help have been added. RPN 2.1 also selects the
X-register after popping.
RPN was written and tested on an LCIII running 7.5.1. With system 7 and
above, of course, the application can function as a desk accessory by
dropping it, or an alias of it, into the "Apple Menu Items" folder. Using
balloon help, RPN may not be compatable with earlier Macintosh systems.

Subject: [*] SpeechAid 1.2 PPC
SpeechAid is a tool that can aid in conversational speech. I wrote
SpeechAid in an attempt to enable my grandmother to carry on a conversation
after she lost this ability due to a stroke. The goal for the application
was to allow the easy construction of phrases to speak using as few clicks
as possible.
System Requirements
1. 68020-based Macintosh or better processor with 4MB of RAM or a
PowerMac with 8MB of RAM.
2. PlainTalk text-to-speech software.
With some tweaking I was able to get it to work on a Powerbook 140 with 4MB
of RAM using System 7.01 and MacinTalk Pro, but just barely.
...
Operation
To construct a phrase to speak, begin by clicking one of the keys in the
on-screen keyboard. The letter clicked is put in the "phrase field" at the
top and the most recently used words beginning with this letter are
displayed in the "recent words" field with the most recent at the top. The
most recently used phrases that contain this word are then displayed in the
"recent phrases" field at the bottom.
If the desired phrase is visible in the "recent phrases" field, simply
click on that phrase and it will be put in the "phrase" field at the top
and spoken with the currently selected voice. You can adjust the volume
with the volume pop-up button. To repeat the phrase, push the "speak"
button to the left of the "phrase" field.
If the desired word or phrase is not visible, keep clicking letters until
the word or phrase appears or the word is completely spelled out.
If you click on words in the "recent words" field, they will be put in the
"phrase" field at the current cursor location followed by a space.
You can save common phrases in the "keepers" field by constructing the
desired phrase and then pressing the down arrow located under the right
side of the "phrase" field.
A good strategy for finding a phrase with the fewest clicks is to begin
clicking the letters for a key word in that phrase. Once the word appears
in the "recent words" field, select it and the phrases containing that word
will appear in the "recent phrases" field at the bottom. Then click the
desired phrase and it will be spoken.
Let me know if you find this useful. Any suggestions are welcome.

Has anyone by any chance successfully configured, hacked, or cussed the
old 6100-type DOS card into supporting Windows for Workgroups? (I mean
getting the ethernet connection to support a NetBEUI connection, not
just running Windows for Workgroups as an OS environment).
I also need to ask about my recently recalcitrant floppy drive. About
a month ago it stopped spinning up the inserted floppies except for
intermittent times when it would decide to cooperate. Some disks that
are inserted will generate an icon, others will give rise to the dialog
asking if I want to format the non-Mac disk. If the disk goes give an
icon, it often will not open when double-clicked; even when it does
open, nothing on disk can be copied, opened, or launched. The drive
no longer makes that squonk squonk sound, just a couple weak clicks
when disks are inserted. I checked the cable connection inside the box
and it looked fine (besides, if it were the cable connection it would
not function at all, I presume). Every rare once in a while, it goes
back to normal; it actually let me install PageMill from floppy, then
10 minutes later would not let me launch a borrowed copy of an updater
that my office-mate had downloaded. (so I had to download my own copy).
I called Apple and the prevailing opinion was that the floppy drive was
hosed. That's sort of what I figured, but if anyone has reason to think
it's likely to be something else that would continue to pose problems
after the drive is replaced--or to think that it sounds like a simple
tweaking, vaccuuming, or exorcism ritual would cure my problem instead,
please advise accordingly. I've never had a floppy drive mechanism go
down the tubes before, and this machine is only 2 years old.

Subject: cd writer window management
A few months ago I saw a utility that would make sure that all windows on a
cd (prior to burning) would appear in the upper left hand corner of a
monitor. The purpose of this was to assure that regardless of what monitor
size or monitor resolution the material was assembled on, the windows would
appear uniformly, eliminating the chance of windows appearing offscreen on
640 x 480 monitors, etc., or windows being partially offscreen.
Unfortunately, the filing system I laughingly refer as my mind no longer
contains the name of this utility. If anyone remembers what this is called
(and where I might find it?), and can e-mail me with this info, I would be
grateful.

Subject: ClarisWorks 4.0v4 Database bug/feature
Dear Digest readers,
Whenever I turn on the "List View", my layout view that used to be one page
wide of records becomes four pages wide of records. I'd like to be able
to see the "List View" at the same time as having a window open on my
Layout view,
without destroying my layout view's 1 page wide worth of records.
Is this possible?
If so, how do I do this.
Pictorally this is what my records look like in a layout view
_________

_________
_________
| |
| --- |

_________
_________

etc...
When the list view is turned on, and I open my layout view afterwards
The layout view becomes
_________ _________ _________ __________

| | | | | | | |
| ---- | | ---- | | ---- | | ---- |
| ----- | | ----- | | ----- | | ----- |

I even tried going into Edit Layouts/Modify layouts, and it still shows
only one column of layout when the list view is on. Obviously ClarisWorks
doesn't know its left hand from its right hand, or else it would tell me
there are 4 columns when the list view is on.
Anybody know why this happens, and how to fix it?
Thank you.

When people submit ppats, icons, etc. I really appreciate those who take
the time to describe them a little. Many times I've downloaded patterns
only to find that they were too emphatic and distracting for my taste. Even
minimal descriptions such as "wild" "subtle," "professional," etc. would be
useful, though I like especially those people who take the time to write a
paragraph clearly characterizing what their work looks like.
And most icons seem to be either variants on standard Mac OS designs,
corporate logos, or pop culture figures. It would be nice to see more
variety. For instance: portraits of famous authors, composers, etc., icons
representing various fields like music, history, etc., details from famous
works of art.

David,
Here's a trick I use to simulate what you want. When you open
Info-mac in eudora, come down into the first paragraph and copy :
ftp://mirror.apple.com/mirrors/
You can actually use any site name (and probably should, so we don't all
gang up on "mirror.apple.com").
Now select "Forward" from the Message menu as if you were going to forward
the copy to someone. The new copy of info-mac is editable. So as you read
it, when you come to a file you want to download, paste in the line in
front of the file so that it looks like your example. You can now click on
the ftp://... line and the download starts.
The down side to this is that when reading info-mac you have to use
the scroll bar because the space bar doesn't work in edit mode. Also,
DON'T use the "Reply" function to avoid accidently re-transmitting that
copy back to starnine.com.

Because your free memory is fragmented. That "Largest unused block" means
just that. It doesn't mean "Total unused memory".
For example, here is the current contents of my "About This Macintosh" window:
Total Memory: 98,304K Largest Unused Block: 24,778K
BBEdit 2,193K
Eudora 1,738K
Illustrator 8,834K
Lotus ccMail 4,049K
Memory Mapper 96K
System Software 15,755K
UserLand Frontier 4,528K
If you total up those program allocations and the largest unused block, you
get about 62 Megs. Where's the other 30?
Let's start up Memory Mapper. You can get this from the info-mac archives,
and it will show you graphically where your memory is allocated and to
what. Quite cooool.

I see my tiny little brain inserted a "to" when I read that question, as in
"...print TO a postcript file..."
If, in fact, you want to do that, my previous suggestions hold.
If, instead, you want to take a existing PostScript file and print it on
paper, then you need to do something else. You have two options,
essentially:
1. send the file to a PostScript printer.
You can do this with the Apple Printer Utility or LaserWriter Font Utility,
one of which should have come with your system disks.
If you don't have a PostScript printer, you'll need to...
2. Convert the file to some other format, then print it.
You can do this in a variety of ways:
Adobe Distiller will convert PostScript file to PDF, which can then be
printed from e Acrobat Reader. This approach has the advantage of
retaining the high resolution of the original document [for the most part].
It has the disadvantage of requiring you to buy software. Distiller as a
separate product costs around $200 last I looked. However, it comes with
some other Adobe products, if you have Illustrator or PageMaker, you may
already have it.
GhostScript will convert from PostScript to a variety of bitmapped graphics
formats, which you could then print from some other program like
GraphicConverter. This approach has the advantage of being free. It has
the disadvantage of requiring the use of a tool [GhostScript] that
apparently many people have problems getting to work [it has always worked
fine for me]. Further, it will probably not retain the high resolution of
the original, unless you have oodles of RAM and a fast machine.
Transverter Pro converts between PS and other graphics formats. I've never
used it, so can't offer much more than that. Disadvantage: costs money.
There may be other commercial solutions similar to Distiller and Tranverter
Pro.

RAM? I think you're talking about the size a file takes on the
harddisk, not in RAM. This is a factor of the "minimum allocation
size" the Mac can handle. Any volume can hac 65535 "blocks" where
data can be stored. For a 4 GB drive, the size one block takes up
is much more than for, say, a 500 MB drive. This block size is also
one of the main reasons why you should partition bigger drives.
Best wishes, Christian.

The Microtek Scanning software stores the address where it found the
scanner last time. Get rid of these settings; it's probably in the
Preferences folder, and re-select the scanner. Then the software will
"see" the new address and display/use it correctly.
Is the scanner at the physical end of your SCSI chain? This is in
most cases recommended - but please, don't ask me why this is so!
Hope this helps. Best wishes, Christian.

(The information in this stack is distilled from *HyperTalk 2.2: The Book*
by Dan Winkler, Scot Kamins, and Jeanne DeVoto, with additional information
for 2.3.)

MacWeek did a good Tech Analysis of the differences between the 603e,

Subject: [Q] Couple of requests...

_________

| ---- |
_________
_________
| |
| --- |

_________
_________

| | | | | | | |
