*****************************************************************
This months article is "Contents of the Extensions Folder Part 2"
*****************************************************************
I am now adding various articles that would be of interest to many of my
readers from the Apple Technical Information Library. Also, I have added
links to each of Apple's major web pages on the internet. There are over
75 links here alone.
The MacAssistant Tips and Tutorial Newsletter only has tips and
tutorials. I do not do reviews in this newsletter. While reviews are
useful, I feel that a newsletter that actually tells you how to use your
your Mac more effectively is much more useful to the novice and
intermediate users. Each issue includes many tips about using your Mac.
The tutorials are accompanied by graphics that help to understand the
article. More information is being added each month for subscribers
incuding the Members Helping Members program along with our fellow user
group members favorite internet sites. This is a shareware product that
has even more information and tips for those that register. This is a
short, fascinating download well worth the time. This month's tutorial
article is available to subscribers only.
This newsletter is distributed as a Docmaker application. NO other
software is needed.

Subject: [*] ANNOUNCEMENT: A tool for Virtual/Multiple domains with AIMS
Dantowitz Consulting & Research, Inc. is pleased to release a new tool
to support multiple (virtual) domains for users of the Apple Internet
Mail Server (AIMS).
DC&R Util 5 works with the Apple Internet Mail Server (AIMS). A
limitation with AIMS is that it can not handle virtual or multiple
domains running on the same server. Instead of having [email protected]
and [email protected], you would be required to use two different
user names (e.g., info and storeInfo, repectively) if both were running
on the same server.
Enter DC&R Util 5, which forever changes how your Apple Internet server
handles email. DC&R Util 5 is a smart mail hub, which works with AIMS to
support multiple (virtual) domains and more (check out the web site!)

From: [email protected] (Jon Gotow)
Subject: [*] AutoLaunch 1.0.6
AutoLaunch is a screen saver "engine" that launches an application after
your Macintosh has been idle for a specified amount of time. It's great
for running stand-alone MacroMedia Director movies as screen savers,
executing AppleScript applets during idle time, restarting demos after a
person walks away from an in-store Mac, etc. It can also be used to keep
applications like FileMaker Pro Server in the foreground so they run faster
when the server is unattended.
AutoLaunch is capable of locating an application anywhere on a Mac's hard
disk, making distribution of Director presentations much easier - you don't
have to worry about installation procedures or that users will move the
presentation to another folder - it'll always work.
Also included with the AutoLaunch control panel are AppleScript examples
for using JPEGView to run a slide show, and to turn file sharing on during
idle time and off at wake-up.
In addition to the standard internet archives, information and updates are
available at:
AutoLaunch is shareware, and may also be included on the UMich and Info-Mac
CD-ROMs.
Changes in this release
- If AutoLaunch encounters an error, it will not post an error alert
until the mouse or keyboard is used again. This prevents the machine
from getting stuck with an alert box showing.
- AutoLaunch now makes sure that the launched application stays
frontmost. This can be very useful for applications like FileMaker
Pro Server that run significantly slower in the background.
- The cursor is now hidden when the screen saver application is running.
- An OpenApplication AppleEvent is now only sent to an already running
application if it is an AppleScript applet.
- Changes to internal operation to merge AutoLaunch with AutoLaunch Pro.

Subject: [*] CopyPaste 3.2 (English)
Highest Recommendation! CopyPaste 3.2 is the best
productivity utility for the Mac. The latest version 3.2 has
many new features the foremost of which is the new clipboard
palette which displays all 10 clipboards in a floating
windoid.
Question: What are the two things that all Mac users
do all the time?
Answer: Copy and Paste. Our focus has been improving that activity.
One of the many things that made the Mac stand out was
its revolutionary ability to do copy and paste across various
applications. Now this ability is commonplace but unlike
other areas in the Mac's system and software that have
changed and progressed over the years, copy and paste has
not evolved. How many times have you found yourself going
back and forth copying in one application and pasting in a
different application, wishing to yourself that you could
copy 5-10 items at a time, then go to another application
and paste each of these items.
CopyPaste gives this ability and much more. Its really
useful! CopyPaste is a must have piece of shareware for all
editors, writers and everyone that uses the clipboard.
CopyPaste gives your Mac 10 clipboards, clipboard
processing, application switching, tag and drop, the ability
to save all clipboards thru restarts, and many other
features. Its a simple to use utility thats available in
every application. You find yourself using it all the time
and wondering why apple didn't include it in the OS.

Count WWWebula is a code fragment plugin for use with WebStar and Boulevard
for Macintosh Web Servers. A CGI version is also available. (READ: THIS IS
*NOT* FOR UNIX MACHINES, NOR WILL IT RUN ON ANY UNIX INTERNET SERVICE
PROVIDERS' WEB SERVERS)
Count WWWebula Plugin is a graphical access counter. It will display the
number of "hits" your web page has received in the form of a gif image.
Count WWWebula was created using Greg's PowerPlant CGI Framework, and
Grant's CGI Framework. It was written using Metrowerks Codewarrior C++ and
PowerPlant, so it is blindingly fast.
Count WWWebula Plugin is shareware. Everyone must send me $30 dollars c/o
Kagi Software per server running the counter, if you are planning on using
it. Please read the enclosed license agreement for complete details. You
can do this via the included "Register" application. Individuals,
educational institutions, and non-profit organizations are not excluded in
sending in the registration fee, unlike the CGI version of Count WWWebula.

Subject: [*] Disk Charmer 3.0.6; disk erase/copy/verify utility
You don't have to wait for Copland to initialize disks in
background...
Disk Charmer is a neat utility that lets you conveniently erase and
copy disks, and handle disk images in DiskCopy and DiskDup+ format.
Disk Charmer lets you create larger disks: you gain 9K on 800K disks,
19K on HD disks, 1.5MB on Zips.
At least System 7 is required.
Help Balloons are everywhere.
Disk Charmer has a nice, modeless interface.
It fully supports drag&drop.
It supports the handy "Undo" feature we all know and love.
New since version 3.0.5:
* Occasionally messed up the radio buttons in the main window when a
non-Mac format was selected, and you switched from an Erase button to
Read or Verify;
* did not gray out the non-Mac formats if you turned off PC Exchange
with the On/Off radio buttons in its control panel (thanks to Peppino
Ventura for spotting these two!);
* the intended check for an obsolete Thread Manager was never
performed;
* should now display Macintosh (grayed out) instead of the first
popup menu item in some Systems without File System Manager (thanks
to Masatsugu Nagata).
Other minor tweaks and fixes. Compiled with CodeWarrior 10.

The EG-02 Scientific Calculator is a TI-style calculator application
that is designed for a variety of scientific, mathematical, and
financial functions. It can be easily programmed by saving and editing
the keystrokes for repeating. Most of the functions are obvious and
perform as they would on any calculator. The advanced functions
included in this calculator are financial functions (mortgage & loan
payments, savings growth, annuities, etc.), statistics (averages,
standard deviations, linear regression, etc.), built-in conversion
factors (length, area, temperature, force, pressure, etc.) and physical
constants. There are five memory locations and two arrays that can be
used to store data. The calculator can be resized for use on a variety
of monitor sizes or to fit the users preference. This software is
shareware. To get complete use of all of the calculator functions
requires that you send in the $10 shareware fee.

Mac restart is a utility for Macintosh Server.
Mac Restart let you automatically restart your Mac at a prefixed time.
This is ideal for Mac which runs continuously and need a automatic restart
at regular interval time.
Mac Restart let you select the time at which automatically restart your Mac
and wich method to use betwen 'Soft Restart' and 'Hard Restart'.
The 'Soft Restart' is quite polite and will quit all your active
application via AppleEvent before restarting as if you use the 'Restart'
command in the finder.
The 'Hard Restart' is instead quite 'brutal'. It restarts your Mac without
advising your running applications.
Mac Restart will display a window reporting at which time your Mac will be
restarted and using which method.
When Mac Restart is in the background it changes its time requested to the
CPU to run, this to not hog your Mac and leave to your server all the power
it needs to carry its work.

Dramatically improve your technical support!

Think about how expensive it is to support a product:
* Long distance phone charges.
* Staff salaries.
* Equipment and training.
* Programmers trying to track down bugs that don't really exist.
* Programmers trying to track down real bugs, but with little accurate
information to go on.
Technical Snapshot is a tool designed specifically to improve technical
support. It provides a complete list of extensions, damaged files, as well

This isn't some ugly hack thrown together in a crude interface. No!
Technical Snapshot has a beautiful, modeless interface that you'll be proud
to include with your product.
And it's cheap too! You can license as few or as many copies as you'd like,

Subject: Threats and Intimidation by Claris Corporation
Well, you can get their attention.
For the past few months it has been my 'mission' to goad Claris into fixing
the "Type 11 crash" that occurs when saving certain documents in
ClarisWorks 4.0v4.
At first Claris would not even admit that the bug existed. They attempted
to blame the problem on 'bad RAM,' and not their poor coding. When they
admitted the bug existed, they said that too few people had sufficient RAM
installed in their machines to experience the problem and that they,
therefore, would not be fixing the bug. Their story soon changed to
claiming that the bug would be fixed in ClarisWorks 5.0. They have finally
indicated that there 'might' actual be a bug fix for those fools who paid
money for ClarisWorks 4.0.
Claris' point man for this newspeak exercise has been a Mr. Jim Spelman, a
employee of Claris who provides 'tech support' in the Claris area of AOL.
Mr. Spelman also pops up in the Usenet newsgroup (comp.sys.mac.apps) to
parrot the Claris party line on their poor products.
It has been my pleasure to respond to Mr. Spelman's disingenuous statements
about ClarisWorks. This has included discussing the existence of the bug
"Type 11 crash" and providing advice to user's with questions about
ClarisWorks that Mr. Spelman either could not or would not answer.
Well, Claris has finally decided to take action! Have they decided to fix
the bug in ClarisWorks? (Right, and Bill Gates is dumping windoze to
develop exclusively for the Mac.) No, they have decided to attempt to
intimidate me with threats and reprisals.
I have been officially block from access the Claris area on AOL and have
received the following threatening e-mail from Claris Corporation. It is
interesting that after stealing my money by providing me with buggy
software, Claris has now decided to steal the service I am paying AOL to
provide by blocking my access to an area of AOL.

Dear Mr. Wink,

Using vulgar, abusive or hateful language is not allowed. When a Member

COPY OF E-MAIL THREAT FROM CLARIS CORPORATION ENDS
I, hereby, give permission for Claris Corporation to post to info-mac the
offending posts so that the readers of this digest can decide if I have
caused distress or embarrassment to Claris Corporation. Let me be quite
clear - that was my intent. It is also my right, as an American, to speak
freely. Notice that Claris does not indicate that I have said anything that
is incorrect or false, but simply that I am embarrassing them.
Well, I hope to continue to embarrass them until they produce working

systems - it's just like Windows95, no one in their right mind would
purchase it if they had the choice.

**** MacUser Macintosh Shareware Utility of the Year 1996 ****

MacHome, Computer Currents, MacToday, MacLife Japan, MacUser
Japan, MacPower, Networks, Gazapee, MacWelt, MacUp,

around the world.
CopyPaste can be tried out for 30 days free before paying
the shareware fee. The shareware fee is $20. Site Licenses
are available (100 users license costs only $500) and we now
take credit cards.

Count WWWebula Plugin is a graphical access counter. It will display the

* Occasionally messed up the radio buttons in the main window when a
non-Mac format was selected, and you switched from an Erase button to
Read or Verify;
* did not gray out the non-Mac formats if you turned off PC Exchange
with the On/Off radio buttons in its control panel (thanks to Peppino
Ventura for spotting these two!);
* the intended check for an obsolete Thread Manager was never
performed;
* should now display Macintosh (grayed out) instead of the first
popup menu item in some Systems without File System Manager (thanks
to Masatsugu Nagata).
Other minor tweaks and fixes. Compiled with CodeWarrior 10.

standard deviations, linear regression, etc.), built-in conversion
factors (length, area, temperature, force, pressure, etc.) and physical

Dear Readers,
This is a collection of 48 icons. I made them this summer during
periods of immense boredom and didn't have a chance to upload them until
now. Some are pictures that I've contorted into icons; some are old
favorites that I gave a Mac OS 8 look; the rest I made from scratch. And,
of course, they're free.

Here is a slightly updated version of MacAuditor. This version has

MacAuditor is a program that scans your hard disks for
Extensions,Control Panels, Applications. It saves this data to a text
file for importing into a database program. You can then compare the
data to your purchase records to make sure that the software you are
using has been paid for. It's very small and can fit on a floppy for

All the setting are changeable in any moment via a dialog and are saved in
a preference file.

Subject: [*] Technical Snapshot 1.0.1
Dramatically improve your technical support!
Attention developers and publishers.
Think about how expensive it is to support a product:
* Long distance phone charges.
* Staff salaries.
* Equipment and training.
* Programmers trying to track down bugs that don't really exist.
* Programmers trying to track down real bugs, but with little accurate
information to go on.
Technical Snapshot is a tool designed specifically to improve technical
support. It provides a complete list of extensions, damaged files, as well
as system and hardware information.
This isn't some ugly hack thrown together in a crude interface. No!
Technical Snapshot has a beautiful, modeless interface that you'll be proud
to include with your product.
And it's cheap too! You can license as few or as many copies as you'd like,
and you can deliver Technical Snapshot to your customers in any manner you
choose.
Please download this application.

Dear Mr. Wink,
It has come to our attention that your conduct in the message boards, by
violating AOL Inc.s Terms of Service, has put your account in jeopardy.
You may not post or use AOL to harass, threaten, embarrass or cause
distress, unwanted attention or discomfort upon another Member or user of
AOL including Claris staff Members.
Using vulgar, abusive or hateful language is not allowed. When a Member
targets another individual or entity to cause distress, embarrassment,
unwanted attention, or other discomfort, this is harassment. AOL Inc.
does not condone harassment in any form and may suspend or terminate the
accounts of any Member who harasses others. You may have a disagreement
with someone's point of view -- we encourage lively discussion in our

you have a disagreement with someone's point of view, address the
subject, not the person. Another option is to send private e-mail.
Any conduct by a Member that in AOL Inc.s sole discretion restricts or

COPY OF E-MAIL THREAT FROM CLARIS CORPORATION ENDS
I, hereby, give permission for Claris Corporation to post to info-mac the
offending posts so that the readers of this digest can decide if I have
caused distress or embarrassment to Claris Corporation. Let me be quite
clear - that was my intent. It is also my right, as an American, to speak
freely. Notice that Claris does not indicate that I have said anything that
is incorrect or false, but simply that I am embarrassing them.
Well, I hope to continue to embarrass them until they produce working
software. I now understand why ClarisWorks is bundled with so many new
systems - it's just like Windows95, no one in their right mind would
purchase it if they had the choice.
