Subject: [*] 3D Buttons v1.3.1

This is the COOLEST 3D Button around!! (but then I'm biased...)

Version 1.3.1 fixes a minor bug that is apparent only when running MS
Internet Explorerer 2

It is FREE, Accelerated for Power Macintosh, looks great even on white
backgrounds, has balloon help and works correctly with localized versions
of the MacOS.

After using it for a while, you'll be amazed at how "flat" the normal
Macintosh buttons appear.

It actually works side-by-side with other utilities, substituting it's
button for those in other utilities. If you like the look of this button,
it will replace the buttons used in NewLook=81 or Greg's Buttons (if you tur=
n
off its "System 7 Color Buttons" option) while allowing all the other
features of those utilities to work. It also works just fine with color
changing utilities like Aurora, Mac MakeOver and even Kolor for those
System 6 users out there.

The button design was inspired by the develop 15 article by Jamie Osborne &
Deanna Thomas and follows their recommendations for 3D shading and colors.
Hopefully, they will approve.

Other features are:
- 3D buttons appear in alerts & dialogs without color tables (and without
adding them).
- a 3D version of the "New folder" button in save dialogs - this works in
localized versions of the MacOS.
- buttons display correctly on PICT or pattern backgrounds - on black&white
displays the buttons are identical to the standard control

A color Macintosh and System 6.0.7 or better are required.

Burst is an Extended Message Service for Eudora 3.0 which will burst many
sorts of non-MIME digests (Eudora handles the MIME case already), including
rfc934, rfc1153, generic listserv, and majordomo. It will also extract
forwarded messages which follow the rfc934 protocol.

Subject: [*] CycloDelic_Olympic_Textures

Attached are two Texture Installer files full of amusing content, from
wildly psychedelic, to snaps of the Olympic Games mens cycling Time Trial
event. You saw them here first. Have the freakiest desktop on your block.
They are eMailware, I would like to know how far they have got. Stick 'em
on your CD-roms, in your ftp archives, but don't charge for them.

Files are in .sit format so it helps if you have a handy decompression tool
on board. A short Read Me goes along too.

A contact in an eastern country could not find Texture Installer on the
net. He asked me to send it. The email with attachment bounced three times.
Regular eMail gets through to him. So maybe eMail is blue pencilled in that
country. If anyone knows of Texture Installers URL or ftp address, please
let me know so I can pass on to my contact. Even better, upload it to
MacGifts, it appears to be not there.

You want personalised desktops? Call me.

All the best,

this patch makes netscape 3.0 a little nicer w/ greg landweber's (and fred
bass's)=93kaleidoscope 1.0.=94 primarily on the eclipse setting.

basically it alters the default color scheme for netscape's window frame
and it also has a beautiful splash screen and better icons.

it looks best on thousands of colors, but still improves the appearence in

so w/resedit, photoshop and rescompare.

PRESS RELEASE - eMail Xpress 1.6 - Bulk Email Management Software

INTERNET, Cyberspace. - Friday, September 6, 1996 - ISO Productions,
developer of productivity software for personal and business uses announced
eMail Xpress 1.6, the most efficient bulk/mass "email loader" available for
the Macintosh OS. A *complete* bulk email management system.

The power packed solution eMail Xpress, allows users of both Claris Emailer
and Qualcomm's Eudora, two of the most popular email applications for the
Macintosh, to send bulk and mass forms of email to large email lists.
Solving the needs of massive email list management, and combined with
features that allow the user to load email directly into their email
application, eMail Xpress is a wonderful communication tool.

One of the most powerful communication tools since the printing press,
eMail Xpress is a companion application to either Claris Emailer or Eudora.
"eMail Xpress is best described as a total bulk email management system."
says Matt Petrowsky, of ISO Productions.

Playing the leader in the bulk email management arena, eMail Xpress is more
than your plain old bulk/mass email loader - it's not just a simple script.
"eMail Xpress doesn't just load bulk email, it makes smart decisions about
the mail it sends to the people on your list." Due to the ever increasing
needs of promotional tools, eMail Xpress was designed with a marketing
purpose in mind and is capable of serving as a publisher's subscription
manager, a shareware registree manager or any organization's correspondence
management tool.

Subject: [*] Guest Lister 1.2

Guest Lister is the fastest, most efficient way to find out about all those
shared volumes of useful stuff out there on your AppleTalk network with
GUEST access.

It's a HyperCard stack and uses some of the Rinaldi externals. Requires
HyperCard 2 or later, the player is fine.

When launched, it builds a zone list. Click a zone and it builds a list of
servers with guest access enabled, then it builds a list of all volumes on
those guest access servers.

A single click on a volume in the list will mount that volume (very quickly).

For determined surfers there is a Report feature that can (if you really
want) write a text file containing a list of all files on all guest access
servers in a given zone. You can also choose to just get a folder list, or
just to go 1 level deep. (That's enough to get an idea of what's out
there).

You may also want to get hold of "AppleShare Control" which lets you turn
off those pesky server welcome dialogs that some people enable. It's in
comm/atlk/ on Info-Mac.

Have fun.

Subject: [*] Referencer 3.2

Referencer 3.2 is a Filemaker Pro 3 database that stores, organizes,
categorizes, and formats many types of references (articles, books, audio,
video, software, etc.) into professional styles. It is competitive in
features with bibliography applications that cost hundreds of dollars.

References can be organized and categorized using the Comments, Keywords,
Category, and Picture options (a picture look-up field automatically
provides a picture of the reference type). Referencer provides assistance
with professional formatting (APA and AMA styles). When you need an
abbreviated periodical name for an AMA reference list a file of over 850
journal names automatically provides the proper abbreviation. Reference
lists are automatically formatted and can be printed or exported to your
word processor. References can be maintained for easy computer searching,
like a library electronic catalog. You can "mark" a reference of interest
while browsing and print select sets. All you need to do is enter the basic
identifying information (title, author names, year, etc.) and decide how to
categorize the reference. Referencer is designed with a 3-D interface and
button-driven ease of use.

Referencer is ideal for teachers, researchers, scientists and students
(especially graduate students). It is invaluable for anyone who wants to
catalog collections of articles from subscribed journals, other
publications and media, for personal publications, and for organizations
that want to organize and track reference collections and facilitate
computer searches.

Subject: ?? Printing a PS file with LW 8.4

Having upgraded to Laserwriter 8.4 has helped with this a lot, but I still
have a question maybe others can help with.

We need to "print" to a postscript file that will be sent to a service
bureau for final printing. I have the PPD for their printer and have
associated it with a printer that isn't normally used (couldn't seem to
just create a dummy printer, but had to modify one that I could see in the
chooser-is there a better way?). The problem is that inexperienced users
are failing to remember to change the destination from "Printer" to "File"
when they finally go to save the PS file. The saved defaults (PS level,
font inclusion etc.) work ok, but I see no way to make "File" the default.
Any suggestions?

A warning about Norton Utilities. I have a PowerMac 7500/100 and used to
run Norton Utilities. However, I had a problem with it where it would destroy
my catalog file. I had to reformat my disk and reinstall my software (I was
lucky enough to have it backed up). I think this problem is particular to
PCI Macs. If you look at the fine print on the MacTools box, you'll also see
that it is owned by Symantec. I suspect that it may have the same problem.
Can anyone confirm this?

-----------------------------

Yes, Jeffrey, Symantec now owns MacTools Pro (I haven't yet decided if this
is a good thing or not). I'm a fan of MTP rather than Norton U. because I
have used them all the way back to when they were "Copy // Plus" for the
Apple // line and belonged to Central Point Software. MTP has never given
me a moment's trouble on any Macintosh as far as optimizing, and it
certainly has never corrupted my hard disk data in any way. I use it
consistently every week. It also does automatic repairs if you select that
option, where in Norton U. you usually have to "OK" the repair to have it
done.

In a related note, it has been mentioned on this list that you can no
longer use the RAM disk option when optimizing if you have upgraded to
7.5.5. While this is true, I have found an easy workaround for this.
Simply back up your System Folder and a copy of the Mac Tools Clinic file
(that file only) to a zip or ezdrive cartridge and boot from that cartridge
to use the optimizer on a hard disk that is "in use."

Boot from a different startup disk, then trash the vexing Systerm Folder,
and run the installers of your choice.

You will, unfortunately, need to delete the 7.5.5 System Folder. The 7.5
Installer will not install over it.

BTW, do your crashes continue without any extensions? 7.5.5's been
perfectly stable for me on the three machines I've got it on.

MacTools was not developed at Symantec and has nothing in common with
Norton. I talked to a MacTools rep at MacWorld 3 years ago, right after
Symantec acquired MacTools. He said the chief MacTools programmer quit
right after Symantec acquired them. Symantec has not upgraded it since
then.

I have used MacTools a few times to defrag the HD on my Nubus PowerMac
without any problem.

I use MacTools regularly to scan my HD for directory and file corruption
problems. So far, it has been very successful in identifying and fixing
problems without destroying any data. I recommend it. However, it is
slow. (45 minutes to scan 540 meg disk with 7000 files. Defrag takes a
few hours.)
