Subject: [*] Font Clerk 6.0.2
This is the latest update to Font Clerk. it fixes a color display problem
that surfaced on some PowerMac models (7200,7600).
Font Clerk 6.0 is a complete font management utility. It provides the
capabilities to view an entire character set, find key sequences for
those special characters, collect font specs for a given point size,
obtain general information about your system and it's configuration, and
generate reports and font lists for easy reference.
Font Clerk 6.0 can be extended through the use of a drop folder called
"FC Scripts". AppleScripts dropped in to Font Clerk's "FC Scripts"
folder, appear in it's "Scripts" menu, allowing the user to expand the
capabilities of Font Clerk. As Apple extends AppleScript, new
capabilities can easily be added through the use of these scripts.
System requirements: Font Clerk 6.0 will run on any Macintosh running
System 7.0 or later (System 7.5 recommended). It supports both color and
black & white monitors.

Subject: [*] Font Gander 1.0.3
=46ont Gander is small, simple application which lets you view fonts
without having to install them. Also prints beautiful specimen sheets.
Works with Adobe Type Manager=99 3.0 and above to allow high-rez imaging
of Type-1 fonts. Best used as a "drag-and-drop" application.
v1.0.3 fixes a potential problem when closing non-installed font files.
Also saves a few kilobytes by using a smaller windoid WDEF and
defaulting to System 7.5's built-in windoid WDEF when that's available
(this should also improve it's Copland-compatibility).
System requirements:
* System 7.0 or higher.
* Works best with Macintosh Drag and Drop installed (standard in System
7.5).

Hello all.
This is chapter two in my continuing saga of adjusting to using 7.5.3 on
a Performa 6320 (instead of 7.0.1 on a LCII). Several members of my
family observed that some fonts (displayed properly previewed in the
ClarisWorks font menu) really just drew the system default font.
Research indicated that numerous font suitcases (obviously installed by
me since they were dated after my purchase of the system) were present,
but when opened, there were no entries. The question is, where did these
come from? I've changed the distribution CD (nope) and I've reinstalled
my printer driver (Stylewriter 2500) (nope). Two of the fonts in
question are called 'cocoa' and 'dear teacher'. Anyone have any ideas?

I downloaded FontBox 2.0 from the InfoMac archives, and let the program
take a look at my Fonts folder, which contains under 100 fonts, not
counting multiple bitmap sizes.
I got a number of diagnostic messages that were simply wrong:
(1) Several bitmapped fonts were claimed to be present in duplicate:
None of them were.
(2) Several bitmapped fonts were claimed to be without Postscript fonts:
In most cases, the Postscript fonts were present.
(3) Several PostScript fonts were claimed to be without Bitmapped fonts:
In all cases, the bitmapped fonts were present.
(4) The list "Bitmapped fonts without PostScript fonts"
contained one Truetype font. Why is it supposed to have a PS font
attached?
None of this mis-diagnosis could be attributed to corrupted fonts:
There were none.
Needless to say, I will not entrust my Fonts folder to a program giving
this kind of diagnosis, whether it won a MacUser Shareware award or
not.
In case it matters, my Mac is a Mac II fx, running System 7.1.

This is not "blessed" by Apple, but what I have done successfully is simply
replace (Finder,System)-files of 7.5.5 by (Finder,System,System 7.5
Update)-files of 7.5.3.
I created two new empty folders and hid the active System-file in one and
the active Finder-file in the other. I dragged the two folders to the
trash. You can't delete them yet; they are still in use.
>From the backup copy I had made of the System Folder containing 7.5.3 I
copied 7.5.3's three-file "package" into the current System Folder.
Finally I rebooted with 7.5.3 and emptied the trash.
---------------------------------------------------
As I said, the above procedure, as far as I know, is NOT blessed by Apple.
Your mileage may vary. You may lose everything although I never have.
---------------------------------------------------
As a last reminder, some System settings may have to be reset when a
System-file is replaced. Settings such as are made through the Color and
Desktop Patterns control panels, and settings such as are made through
Chooser.
Hope this helps.

A warning about Norton Utilities. I have a PowerMac 7500/100 and used to
run Norton Utilities. However, I had a problem with it where it would destroy
my catalog file. I had to reformat my disk and reinstall my software (I was
lucky enough to have it backed up). I think this problem is particular to
PCI Macs. If you look at the fine print on the MacTools box, you'll also see
that it is owned by Symantec. I suspect that it may have the same problem.
Can anyone confirm this?

Thanks for your help in the past. Could you post the following for me.
Is it possible to convert Mac Microsoft Word files to DOS Microsoft files on
my Mac so that they may be sent from my Macintosh to a DOS (Windows) machine
(with Microsoft Word) as an email enclosure. That way the recepient (who is
much more of a computer novice than I am) can open them directly. Please

Subject: Quicktime Musical Instruments Program/Patch Changing?
Hi. I'm trying to use Quicktime musical instruments with Opcode's MAX.
With OMS 2.2, I have no problem using Quicktime Musical Instruments in
place of a normal MIDI sound module, but all I can seem to get is a piano
sound, which I'm assuming is program 1. It seems to ignore the program
change messages I send to it. I've been trying to search through the stuff
at Apple's quicktime site, and I can't even find anything that is
specifically about QTMI. Anybody know about this problem or where I can
find info on QTMI? Thanks in advance...

Try NetWeight; a small extension that gives you a graphical (and text)
overview of how your memory is being occupied by extensions and control
panels.

Subject: Seeking Word-counting Program
I'm looking for a program that counts how many times each word appears
in a document and lists them, like this:
The 5
an 3
with 3
or 2
If you have seen anything like this or can suggest where to find it,
please let me know. (A similar program, MacTravesty, won't list whole
words)

I am looking for any programs/CD-ROMs which take an interactive
approach to tutoring senior maths (specifically British Columbia, Canada,
Math 12--but any localized program for Canada/US will do). Most of the
catalogues and people I have talked to only know of junior programs.
Please e-mail me a copy of any suggestions for titles that you might
have.
Thanks,

Subject: starting up from zip disk?
i'm sure this has been asked before, but how do i start up from a zip disk (it
has all the right system folder stuff)? i've tried setting it to be the
startup disk, and i've also tried holding down command-option-shift-delete on
startup to "bypass" the hard disk, but no matter what, i boot off the internal
hard drive. i suppose i could temporarily trash the system folder on my hard
drive, but for what should be obvious reasons, i am hesitant to do so. any
advice?
