"Robotic System Clock Sounds"

The "Robotic" System Clock Sounds are a set of sounds that are designed
for use with your "Date and Time" control panel or "SuperClock" control
panel. The sounds are of a hi-tech, robotic voice in stereo that
announces the time of the hour. The set contains 5 sounds:

Top Of The Hour - "The Time Is The Top Of The Hour"
1/4 Past - "The Time Is Quarter Past The Hour"
1/2 Past - "The Time Is Half Past The Hour"
1/4 'Til - "The Time Is Quarter 'Til The Hour"
Chime - A short, beepy-robotic sound

If you have System 7.5 or above, or use the "SuperClock" (shareware)
control panel, you can assign these sounds to play automatically at the
appropriate times. The sounds are avialable in both 16-bit/44.1kHz or
8-bit/22.5kHz versions here or at the Clixsounds WWW site at:

This file is freeware and redistribution of the archive in its entirety
is welcome. Instructions are included with the file for proper
installation. Note that a portion of the file is a catalog containing
information about the Clixsounds CD-ROM.

=46ractal Generator is a simple program that creates a Mandelbrot fractal.

Problem and bugs: I can't think of anything off the bat, but this has
only been tested of a Quadra 605 (that's right, no PowerPC, no FPU). The
only error might come if you enlarge all of the windows as large as
possible, and then try to save, but only if your working in a low memory
situation. If you find any bugs, please send me a discription.

Shareware fee: $10. That's all, but you don't get anything more if you
register. Just the satisfaction of knowing that you helped a new
shareware programmer. Please also include your e-mail address (if you
want to, of course)

Please spread this around. Give it to your neighbor, your mail-man,
your dog, even a windoze dude (I wouldn't know why you would want to
that though). Just please keep everything in this archive togeather.

This file may be freely distributed without alterations. For-profit

ShawBerry merges two text files at the points specified by the user. An
example where it might prove useful: a DOS user supplies a PRN file of a
too-wide spreadsheet. The PRN file has the left half of the text at the
top of the file, followed by the right half. If you split the halves
into two different files, you could use ShawBerry to reassemble each
line of the file. Another example: ShawBerry is very useful in
connection with PixPex, discussed below. Useful for any text
processing/data processing purpose.

This tool is useful for editing HTML code for web pages.

Subject: [*] MacUpdate 4.0b3

MacUpdate is a general-purpose file synchronization utility
program written for Macintosh computers. It is simple enough
to be used for every-day backups, yet is flexible enough to
do specialized backups according to user-specified criteria.

MacUpdate can perform faster than other backup solutions
because it looks at the modification dates of your files, and
only copies to the backup disk if a file has been changed on
the original source disk. Files that have not changed since
the last backup have the same modification date, and are
ignored by MacUpdate. MacUpdate can also be configured to
create items on the backup disk that are new on the original
disk. Similarly, MacUpdate can be set up to delete items
>From the backup disk that were deleted from the original
disk.

MacUpdate is also useful when working on different
Macintoshes in different locations. You can use a Zip,
SyQuest, or floppy disk as a "shuttle disk", and do file
synchronization from one location to the removable disk,
then go to the other location, and do file synchronization
>From the removable disk to the other location. This
accomplishes synchronizing the two locations.

Of course, MacUpdate works with AppleTalk networks, so you
can also use MacUpdate to ensure all locations on your
network have the latest version of some particular piece
of software. MacUpdate works with any Hierarchical Filing
System (HFS) disk. This includes pretty much any disk you
can mount on your Mac's desktop. You should be able to
use MacUpdate on anything you can access directly from
the Finder.

MacUpdate is very easy to use. You can drag icons directly
>From the Finder into MacUpdate's windows to add a Pair of
items to be synchronized. Even though MacUpdate is easy
to use, it is very flexible and powerful. Excellent
documentation is included.

Subject: [*] NDS Osax 1.0d4

What is it?

The NDS Osax is a small set of the many NetWare 4.1 NetWare
Directory Services (NDS) API calls, encapsulated into an
AppleScript extension (osax). This osax is only really useful if you
are using Novell's NetWare Client for Macintosh version 5.1 to
connect to NetWare 4.1 file servers. (They may also work with the
older MacNDS client, but no guarantees).

What can I use it for?

Use it in a personal login script to log you in to NDS & mount some
volumes (by telling the finder to open some NDS object files), or
use it in a departmental shutdown script that looks at your context
or user ID and takes an action depending on who you are.

For more info, check out http://www.lextech.com/egb/ndsosax.html

Subject: [*] newsUNIT 1.0

newsUNIT is a clean way to get converted units of weight, mass, velocity,
volume, temperature or area into your documents -- fast.

newsUNIT won't overwhelm you with information you don't want. You enter
your number, choose what unit you're going from and what unit you want to
go to, and the solution is immediately displayed.

And all you have to do is click a button (shown as a pair of scissors) to
copy that solution to the clipboard ready for pasting directly into any
document, in a format similar to what you see in your local newspaper.

For example, a news story might normally read "Francois drove his tractor
60 metres to reach the stranded cow". Using newsUNIT to paste a conversion
into that sentence, it becomes "Francois drove his tractor 60 metres (197
feet) to reach the stranded cow". A simple task, sure, but if you're doing
it a lot you'll save time doing it this way!

We hope lots of people will find this software useful - for reports,
newsletters, or anything else that requires quick conversion of units and a
friendly way of showing them.

Subject: [*] Palimpsest Lite

Palimpsest Lite is a demonstration version of Palimpsest, available from
Western Civilisation pty. ltd.

Project Gutenberg and many similar projects by individuals and
institutions are already making libraries of electronic text (etext)
freely available via the internet. Improvements in scanning technologies
mean that it is increasingly affordable for organizations and
individuals to create their own etexts. But how are we to work with
these documents? Palimpsest addresses this need, with a powerful new
hypertext application for working with etext.

Palimpsest is ideal for anyone whose work involves documents. This
includes secondary and higher education students of literature, history,
law or any subject which involves working with written material.
Teachers, academics, researchers, lawyers, religious scholars and others
would all benefit from this complete system.

Palimpsest provides you with a suite of features which support on screen
research, reading, study and teaching.

Palimpsest
* provides a space for organizing collections of related documents
* incorporates unique hypertext features to help you annotate, cross
reference, and give outline structures to your own work, and the
documents you are working with.
* features sophisticated but easy to use searching, as well as novel
hypertext reporting features.

Palimpsest Lite is limited to making ten new documents. Palimpsest is
available for US$50 for a one year subscription entitling you to all
upgrades, technical support and more. See
http://www.westciv.com.au/Buying_Palimpsest.html

Subject: [*] Pict to ASCII Art Converter version 1.0b1

Hey

This is Pict to ASCII Art Converter version 1.0b1. Pict to ASCII
essentially applies a conversion to data that has come from the
clipboard to produce an "ASCII Art" image. It's a tiny program that does
not have a very good interface, but it can produce some very good
results. Also included in this release is a development version of a new
core for P->A. It's dubbed "Greyscale," and produces very accurate ASCII
images from 16 color greyscale images. It uses a range of characters to
represent different shades of grey; ":" is very light, and "#" is very
dark.

Pict to ASCII now also has a support site at:
http://www.eden.com/~ben/p2a/

Things are being added to it currently - right now it's just an explanation
of the program itself.

Subject: [*] QuickScrap 1.0

Keywords: MULTIPLE CLIPBOARD SCRAPBOOK SCRAPIT PRO SAVE EDIT TEXT DATABASE

QuickScrap (QS) can do things to make your life so much easier when using
your Macintosh. Have you ever wanted to be able to easily store a piece
of information from any document you're reading or editing? Here's how
it's done with and without QuickScrap:

Without QuickScrap:
- select the information
- type Command-C to copy
- switch to finder or use the apple menu
- open your other application or scrapbook
- type Command-V to paste in the info
- switch back to the first application
- continue where you left off

With QuickScrap:
- select the info
- type your QS hotkey
- continue

With QuickScrap, you can send the data on the clipboard instantly to a
scrapbook file, a ScrapIt Pro file or a QuickScrap file by pressing a key
(or keys) of your choice! The QuickScrap file can be used as a multiple
clipboard containing as many as 100 items (you choose how many items it
will hold). You can have QuickScrap automatically copy any selection
you've made in any document you're working on and send the data directly
to a scrap file with one keystroke.

Another handy feature of QuickScrap is that you can set a "Hotkey" to
allow you to type a quick note (or edit text on the clipboard) and send
it to a scrap file without having to leave the application you're currently
in.

You can set another key to open any scrap file, display all the items in
a gallery view or alphabetical list view and allow you to select an item
and instantly have it pasted into whatever document you're editing.

Fixed several bugs, including the
'Locked files' problem.
More intuitive user interface.
Faster operation.
New features for users of 'File relocation'
New features enabling the recording of error logs
for usage by administrators.

DESCRIPTION
============
SmartSaver helps you to backup changed and added files in your filesystem.
It lets you select a folder or disk to be the source location,
and an other folder or disk to be the destination location.
After giving the [Save smart] menu command, SmartSaver starts to trace
the source and destination location, and copies all files from the source
that are new or have been modified, to the destinationfolder.

There are several features available. Some of the most important ones are:

* File Relocation (automatic relocation of files on the destination
volume depending on a letter code at the start of the file name).
* File Compression (Automatic compression before transfer to
destination using DiskDoubler v3.7.x).
* Detection of moved files (Moved files are automatically moved on the
destination too, without re-copying them)
* Quit dialog (Allows you to let SmartSaver save your work before
shutting down your mac unattendedly).
* Full drag&drop system 7 support.
* Network services like messages and remote control,
for example to shut down an other mac.
* File selection by label and substring in the filename.
* Trace and Cleanup commands to detect and trash double data on you volumes.
* And many more.

win a battle with the computer player, you will be given a certain amount
of money that can be used to buy power up items for your tank. The object
of the game is to gradually gain money to buy items to upgrade your tank.
When your tank is sufficiently powerful, you may attempt to defeat the
final boss tank (Select "Final Boss" from the Difficulty Menu). BEWARE:
The Final Boss is SMART and TOUGH! But if he is defeated you will find
that the reward was well worth the trouble. Tank Wars is shareware - the
fee is $5. Once the fee is paid, any program or upgrade I produce will be
yours for FREE, plus I will send you a registration code that will make
your tanks more powerful than you can possibly imagine.

New features since version 1.0.2:
The improvements from version 1.0.2 are:

- Now you can fire as many shots as you want (up to 10)!
- The "Arena" window will size itself depending on your monitor size.
- The music feature is now enabled allowing you to listen to any of your
favorite MIDI's while playing the game!
- Better sound effects
- "Phasers" is now the most powerful weapon (Damage is 100 per hit)
- Completely optimized source code. If you wish to obtain a copy of the
source code, please send e-mail to me at: [email protected]
- The direction in which you can fire your weapon is no longer dependent
upon the direction in which you happen to be going.

System requirements:
* System 6.8 or greator
* Mac needs a 68020+ CPU to run Tank Wars
* Mac needs a 68030+ CPU to play Tank Wars MIDI's

Subject: [Q] Sound + internet on performa = slow?

I have a small communication problem on my Performa 5200. My dial-up PPP
connection works smoothly if it's allowed to work in silence. With any
sound channel opened, the net traffic becomes very jerky. This is
particularly apparent when playing the Ambrosia game Avara over
modem-internet. Without sound, everything goes smoothly; with sound, the
game stops, goes, stops etc. I talked to other players with other macs,
and they don't experience this problem. Is this a Performa only problem?

I have system 7.5.3 installed and Open Transport 1.1.1b8. Earlier I had
system 7.5.1 with MacTCp 2.* with the same sound problems.

Any ways to ease the CPU load when sound is played? Other suggestions?
(PLaying without sound isn't that fun)

Subject: How to Downgrade System?

System 7.5.5 has been crashing on me way too often to be of any benefit. I
haven't noticed any reliability or speed improvements either.

So I'm now trying to remove it and re-install System 7.5.3. Is this possible?

Those upgrade disks for 7.5.3 and 7.5 have "remove" buttons, but they become
unselectable because I am running 7.5.5. How can I get around this?

What is the easiest way to downgrade back to an earlier version of System?

Subject: Monitors/Sounds CP dilemma

10/7/95

Dear Apple (via Infomac),

I am in total confusion about what Sound or Monitors Control Panel(s)
and accompanying Extensions I need for a 6100/60AV Power Mac with a 14"
AV monitor.
I am running System 7.5.5

The failure to have the correct combination, I believe, is at the root
of frequent problems I often (but not always) have when I experience a
system crash for one reason or another. Often, but not always, when I
reboot (makes no difference if it is a warm restart or a cold
buttonswitch-controlled startup), the contrast on the monitor display
"washes out" leaving me with a grayed over (but still color) screen.
(i.e., there is no "memory" of the previous settings for the brightness
and contrast) Even the black border of the pre-Finder screen is gray!
When this happens, it also means that the Sound CP (v6.0.5) displays
only half its controls: while the two sliders for the CPU built-in
speaker and headphone volume control appear, the two additional sliders
to adjust the sound for the Stereo speakers built into the AV monitor do
not, and apparently have not "loaded". While I can readjust the
approximate contrast and brightness previously on my screen with the
buttons on the front of the monitor, it takes several reboots (no other
actions seem to work in conjunction with simply rebooting) to restore
the "best" contrast onscreen and, moreover, the full stereo capability
as opposed to the simple speaker built into the CPU unit.

On the occasions when I do get full contrast and the two extra sliders
in the Sound CP, it seems to follow the loading of the "~Audiovision"
Extension. This extension is nowhere mentioned in any non-Apple
literature (InformInit v1.2 mentions it only in reference to the Video
CP which is an optional component of the extension); it comes with the
14" AV monitor, and must be present for me to take advantage of the AV
monitor's built-in stereo features. (From the aforementioned
experience, it seems also to control the monitor's "memory" of its
proper brightness and contrast settings as well, but since it is only an
extension, I cannot make software adjustments to the brightness and
contrast except via the physical buttons on the front of the monitor
itself.) The oddest part of all this is that the functionality I am
assuming is provided by the ~Audiovision extention is only erratically
provided during reboot following a crash; it usually takes more than 1
reboot to restore this functionality.

As noted, I am running System 7.5.5. I seem to recall when I first
upgraded to 7.5.3, I found the "Monitors & Sound" CP in my control
panels folder. But since I was experiencing problems with getting full
control over sound (can't remember the details) and especially since
everything I have read says that the "Monitors & Sound" CP was only
needed for PCI Macs (the 6100 is NOT a PCI Mac), I removed it and went
back to using separate "Monitors" and "Sound" Control Panels. The
former is now at v7.5.5 and the latter, as stated above, is at v6.0.5.
I also keep ~Audiovision which remains at v 1.0.1 (for System 7.1.2).
Clearly, the latter is not likely to be correct, but I cannot seem to
operate without it. Moreover, although I suspect that in spite of the
literature referring only to its use with PCI Macs the Monitors and
Sounds CP that came with System 7.5.3 takes over the function of
~Audiovision even for the 14" AV monitor, and might solve my problem
with some further experimenting, I CANNOT FIND THIS CONTROL PANEL ON ANY
OF THE VARIETY OF SYSTEM UPGRADES SINCE 7.0! Furthermore, even if I
could find this CP on any of the System upgrade disks or CD ROM, now
that I am up to 7.5.5, the installer will not permit me even a Custom
Install of anything!

I also have the PowerPC Monitors extension v7.5, which is apparently
needed specifically for the 6100/60 AV with 14" monitor. I assume this
is still needed even if I am able to restore the Monitors & Sound CP (or
is it upgraded out of existence by the installation of 7.5.5? Since this
did not happen when I made the upgrade, I assume it should still be in
use; OTOH, I did not have the S&M CP specifically in the CP folder, so
the Installer may have just left it alone). Ditto, the System AV (v 1.1
for System 7.5, update 2.0) extension even though its description refers
only to its use with Sound and Displays CP (the 7.5.2 forerunner of
S&M). Of course, the Sound Manager CP (v3.1) is also installed, but it
is unclear if this is really related to the problem, and I assume it is
the latest version for use with 7.5.5.

Finally, to leave me more confused than ever as to a) what I need, and
b) how to get it, Conflict Catcher does not even display the fact that I
do have loaded separate Sound and Monitors control panels!!! Neither
appear in its otherwise complete list of inits! All the other inits, CP
and extensions, mention above as on my hard drive do appear. Why is
this????

Bottom line: what exact CPs and extensions do I need for full stereo
and full contrast/brightness control via the AV 14" monitor do I need
for a 6100/60AV Mac?? If I need to trash certain of what I do have, and
replace it with the Monitor & Sound CP that arrived with 7.5.3, how do I
do this now that I am running 7.5.5? Where do I find this CP? What
exact extensions must I have as components of it?

The following a complete list of the CPs and extensions I am now
running which I believe may in some way be related to the problem noted
in para 2 above:
Sounds v6.0.5 (Control Panel)
Monitors v7.5.5 (Control Panel)

Sound Manager (Extension) v3.1
PowerPC Monitors Extension v7.5
System AV v1.1
~Audiovision 1.0.1 (Extension for System 7.5.2)

In addition, but probably not related, I run
Snd Control v2.0 (Control Panel for relating various sounds with system
functions)

If nothing else should ever cause me to leave the Mac OS for Windows,
this will do it. The total confusion caused by the variety of Mac
models since approximately 1990 in conjunction with the incredibly
screwed up System upgrades since System 7 have made Macs almost as
confusing as PCs to upgrade and manage. I am being generous: since I
don't own a PC, I do not really have first hand experience of the two
personal Windows systems (3.1 and 95), so I can't really say whether the
Mac is still an easier system to manage. In absolute terms, it has
become a pain in the ass, however. So, I fully expect Apple to give me
precise, completely accurate instructions on how to correct my problem
to relieve this pain. AND, it must not require the complete
reinstallation of the system software (with its attendant hours of work
and reconfiguration)!
