Subject: [*] Acme Movers 1.1p1

Attached is a shareware utility I programmed, named Acme Movers. Acme Movers
is a utility designed to supplement the Finder and provide an alternative
interface for moving or copying files from one location to another on any
mounted volumes. Regardless of whether the source file or folder and the
destination folder are on the same volume or different mounted volumes, you
have a choice of moving the source (leaving only one copy of it at the
destination), copying the source (leaving the source where it is and making a
copy of it at the destination) or moving the source and creating an alias to
its new location at its old location. If the destination already contains an
item with the same name as the source item, Acme Movers offers you a choice
of replacing the item or renaming either the source or the destination item.

Thanks!

Shepherd's Pi Software.

Subject: [*] AMICO 2.1J - Japanese Version

This is the Japanese version of the AMICO extension package.

AMICO is a utility for the apple menu. It simply lets you change the order
of the items that appear in the apple menu, in a very easy way. In
addition, you can insert divider lines to group related items together.

Requirements
AMICO is expected to run on any Macintosh model with system 7 or later.
Personally, I have tested it successfully on a Macintosh LC, LC III, LC
475, Macintosh IIci, Power Macintosh 6100, and Power Macintosh 5200.

Changes for 2.1J

- Fixed a bug that prevented AMICO from working in applications other than
the Finder

Subject: [*] Catalogue 2.1J - Japanese Version

This is the Japanese of the Catalogue utility package.

Catalogue is a program that allows you to track all the removable media
that can be mounted on the Mac. There are many other similar programs, but
none are easy to use, which is why I wrote this program.

Here are the most significative new features that have been added to
Catalogue:

$B!&(J Support of Drag&Drop for folders and volumes. If you drag a
volume, it is saved in the default database and Catalogue quit when it is
over. If you drag a folder, it is opened in place of the default one.
Attention: if an older version of Catalogue has already been installed on
your hard drive, you will probably have to rebuild your desktop
(Command-Option at startup).
$B!&(J Catalogue is now able to scan into StuffIt and Compact Pro
archives. You can disable this feature in the preferences. $B!&(J A
preferences function let you disable saving invisible and no name files. No
name files are generally used to create large icons on CD's.
$B!&(J You can now save up to 4000 volumes in the same database
(previously 650). $B!&(J The search function is now able to display up to
4000 matching items (previously 800).
$B!&(J The items size can be displayed in the lists. $B!&(J In the info
part of the volume, the volume save date is now displayed. $B!&(J An
export function let you use the Catalogue database with other programs.
$B!&(J Catalogue doesn't need anymore the Scripting Finder extension to
open applications or documents.
$B!&(J The size and position of the window is saved in the preferences.
$B!&(J A toolbar contains buttons for the most used functions. $B!&(J
If you try to launch an application on a unmounted volume, the program
waits until the volume is introduced in the drive. There's not only an
alert that return to the application.
$B!&(J In the info part of the main window, the date format has been
changed. The month is now displayed using 3 characters.
$B!&(J Two modifiers have changed. To make multiple selections, you have
to use Cmd instead of Ctrl. I have changed this to follow the Mac standard.
And thus, to launch an application, you have to use the Ctrl key. $B!&(J
The search result is not more displayed in a different window. The matching
items now appears in the column list (this is the same as the old Visualize
in the volumes window command).
$B!&(J It is possible to sort the search result. $B!&(J When you drag a
volume on the Catalogue icon, it is saved in the default folder. If you
want to save it in another location, just maintain the Cmd key down during
the operation. This let you choose a new folder before saving it.
$B!&(J Fixed some minor bug when displaying the middle column. $B!&(J
Some dialog have been resized to fit little screen (i.e. with Mac Classic).

One of the early wonders of the Mac was its revolutionary ability to do

years, copy and paste has not evolved. How many times have you found

C.S.M.P. Digest
Volume 4 : Issues 2-6

The Comp.Sys.Mac.Programmer Digest is moderated by Mark Aiken
([email protected]).

The digest is a collection of article threads from the internet
newsgroups comp.sys.mac.programmer.help, csmp.tools, csmp.misc and
csmp.games. It is designed for people who read news semi-regularly and
want an archive of the discussions. If you don't know what a
newsgroup is, you probably don't have access to it. Ask your systems
administrator(s) for details. If you don't have access to news, you
may still be able to post messages to the group by using a mail server
like anon.penet.fi (mail [email protected] for more information).

Each issue of the digest contains one or more sets of articles (called
threads), with each set corresponding to a 'discussion' of a particular
subject. The articles are not edited; all articles included in this digest
are in their original posted form (as received by our news server at
ee.mcgill.ca). Article threads are not added to the digest until the last
article added to the thread is at least two weeks old (this is to ensure that
the thread is dead before adding it to the digest). Article threads that
consist of only one message are generally not included in the digest.

The digests can be obtained by email, ftp or through the World Wide Web.

Smart Scroll enhances regular scroll bars so they show how much of a
document is displayed in a window. The thumb indicator in scroll bars
becomes proportional : If a window is displaying half of a document, the
indicator will be half the scrollbar size.

This gives you an idea of how large the document is, without having to
scroll the window to find out. Try it for yourself, it'll speed browsing
the Net or going through your email, for example.

All scrollbars benefit from these improvements, even those hidden in Open
and Save dialogs. After a few days of Smart Scroll, going back to regular
scroll feels like something is missing !

1.1 19aug96
* Removed 'Page' number feature
* Added choice of plain or striped thumbs
* Switched from '?' to 'X' displayed over thumb to indicate it's not
proportional. If you'd prefer something else, please let me know!
* Name changed to Smart Scroll from Smart Scrolls (Please delete old Smart
Scrolls prefs file)
* No need anymore to turn off and reinstall if registering after the end of
the demo period
* Thumb outline now appears when dragging thumb on PowerMacs running 7.5.3
* Fixed zero divide error with some applications using panes
* DoubleScroll 2.1.2 arrows no longer overwritten
* Compatible with Aaron 1.5
* All alerts appear on the main screen now

Word Weaver 2.3 is a shareware HyperCard program for
Macintosh. It will run on any Mac with a minimum of memory.
------------------------------------
It allows teachers to type or import a paragraph of text, and then, in
an instant, turns the text into four worksheets, which can then be
printed out for students.
Sentence Halves - students match correct pairs.
Jumbled Paragraph - students rearrange sentences into
the right order.
Jumbled Sentences - students rearrange the words to produce
the correct sentence.
Cloze - students fill in the missing words.

My Quadra 700 has a video problem. In millions of colors, the desktop
patterns sometimes get corrupted when windows are closed, under where
the window used to be. This never happens in 256 colors, and it does
not always happen in millions. The corruption, of course, is not
permanent, it is only in video memory (I assume). If I switch color
level down to 8 bit, everything is cleared up. I do have Aaron
installed, but this has happened ever since I got the computer, long
before Aaron was on the scene. Any help?

My thoughts exactly. I still use Navigator more than CD, although the
Notebook and Starting points are rather useful. There are several OD word
processors scheduled for fall, and this is when CyberDog really begins to
shine because you can embed Web pages in documents.

Subject: generic icon frustration!

hi folks,

I'm cursed with several generic icons in my system folder which may be
causing me mysterious
crashes. I've rebuilt the desktop, trashed the finder prefs file, and run
Norton Utilities. Norton
seemed to freeze up at a certain point in one of it's tests, so I didn't
finish it..

I also zapped the PRAM...

What, if anything, can I do to restore these icons? I've re-installed the
system software recently
(system 7.5.5) and am tired of resorting to it everytime something goes
wrong! I've reinstalled
the system software (and done clean installs each time) far too many times
recently, it seems...

Does anyone have any advice for me?

Subject: Help with MAC LC

Hi
The National Trust here in Montserrat, West Indies, has a MAC LC and a 486
(Donated). I have some questions:

1. Can the 3.5" drive from a MAC SE30 be put into the LC? (The LC 3.5"
drive doesn't work.) If it will work, but doesn't fit, can it be put into
an external case and then be used.?

2, Can we hook the 2 machines up, so both can use the same data. They sit
back to back on desks. They do have a Syquest 135EZ which I believe they
can hook up to either computer.

Since this is a non-profit organization and money is in short supply, we
need to do this as cheaply as possible.

Please email me direct and I will post the results.

Subject: Imaginary monitor

A customer has the following setup:

Power Mac 7100/66AV
16 MB RAM
260 MB HD
System 7.5.3 (upgraded from 7.5 a few days ago)
AudioVision 14 monitor
AppleVision 1.0.2 software
Monitors control panel 7.5.5

Two problems:

1. The black border around the image area has dramatically increased in
width since installing System 7.5 Update 2.0.

2. The Monitors control panel believes a non-existent second monitor is
attached. When you check the options for this monitor, it says: Display
Video on Television, NTSC Standard. Zapping the PRAM, disconnecting and
reconnecting the monitor, switching on the monitor after booting -- none
of these has any effect. "Monitors" is convinced there's a second display
and there's just no telling it otherwise. There is no "Video" control
panel installed and no video/TV components are present in the Extensions
folder.

Any advice, oh gurus and fundis?

Subject: MacPlus/SE & System 6 via PPP

I've been gathering info on how to connect 68000 macs like Plus and SE with
1-4 MB RAM, floppy drive(s) and System 6 via PPP and which TCP apps to use.

So far I've heard that following software versions might work:

System 6.0.7 (what is the minimum for MacPPP 2.0.1?)
MacTCP 1.1 (v2.0.4-2.0.6 should also work with at least 2.5 MB RAM)
MacPPP 2.0.1 (still the only one for 68000 macs)
Eudora 1.3.1
NewsWatcher 2.0d13m01
Internews 1.1
Fetch 3.0.1 (older versions may use less memory)
Valuefax 2.0.9 or 3.0.1
NCSA Telnet?

I'd appreciate comments from those who are actually using this kind of system.

...With 4 MB RAM, 20 MB harddisk and System 7 things are easier:

Recent versions of Eudora, Fetch, Anarchie and NewsWatcher work fine. With
NCSA Telnet you may have trouble with control-keys which Mac Plus lacks?
For www NCSA Mosaic 1.0.3 and MacWeb 1.00A3.2 work. MacWeb 1.00A3.2 works
better than 1.1.1 E which crashes when saving prefs. NCSA Mosaic can
display in-line graphics but with MacWeb (on 68000macs) you must use
GIFConverter as a helper (click and hold on an image icon, choose "Retrieve
to Disk" from the pop-up menu and view with GIFConverter).

With only 1 MB RAM, floppy drive(s) and System 6 you can also connect via a
terminal emulator like ZTerm and use unix apps like pine, tin, ftp, ncftp,
sz, rz, and lynx for mail, news, file transfer and www. With ZTerm you can
use command-key instead of control when using Mac Plus.

How many PCs from '84 can do all this?? :)

ps. check also:

Subject: Monitor tinting aqua

I have a friend who has been having some problems with his standard Apple
14" monitor. It's attached to his Performa 6300 he bought around Christmas
time last year. Just recently, it has started "flashing" into a blue-green
tint. The monitor will hold this tint for a few seconds, then change back
to it's normal color. There are no connection problems (that I noticed
anyways) with the cable.

Has anyone had this problem happen to them?

Thanks a lot,

I think the ClarisWorks 4.0 word processor fits your description pretty well,
and to boot they've said version 5 will be OpenDoc something or other...

I gave up using Word 5.1 after I got CW4, and recently quit using Pagemaker
after I learned to turn on CW4's Frame Links in the drawing mode.

Subject: PC exchange

I've been having a problem with PC Exchange ever since I upgraded from 7.5.
The problem is in 7.5.3 as well as 7.5.5.

If I create a simpletext document and copy the file to a floppy formatted
with PC exchange, all carriage return/linefeed information is lost. This
used to work fine under 7.5.

I've tried booting with all other extensions off, and the problem still
exists, so I doubt it's a conflict.

I've also tried utilities that add this carriage return/linefeed
information back in, with no success.

I called SOS-APPL, but not surprisingly, they didn't know anything about it.

If someone can verify that this is indeed a bug that was introduced, or a
solution to the problem, it would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Dale, this is a shot in the dark: Do you by any chance have Speed
Doubler installed? SD attempts to increase your cache setting in the
Memory control panel according to the amount of memory you have
installed in your machine. The higher the cache setting, the higher the
system's RAM requirements. Maybe your adding the additional 16 meg
somehow triggered SD to take it upon itself to correspondingly increase
the cache. Even if my hypothesis is wrong--which is probably the
case--check the cache setting anyway. Maybe it's higher than you think.

Are you using a video board (instead of internal video)? My board has an
