Subject: [*] "Wunschzettel" for Newton

wzettel-124.hqx is the English version
wzettel-124-de.hqx is the German version

"Wunschzettel" is the German word for"list of wishes". Consequently it is a
(check-)list manager. I know, there are more list managers "out there". But
this one has a special feature: Each item you once made can be "remembered"
by "Wunschzettel". So after entering its name once you can reuse the item
over and over again just on two "taps".

A typical example is a shopping list. Instead of writing again and again
items like "bread", "tooth-paste", ... you can select these items from
dynamically growing popup lists. After a short time you have all those
things in your popup that you might want to buy. This is also quite usefull
to check out if you have forgotten anything to put on your list.

More Features of "Wunschzettel":
- Supports multiple lists (each one has its own pop-up lists). - On each
list, items can be assigned to one (of three) different named categories.
- Sort selected items by four different criteria:
alpha, checked+alpha, categories+alpha, checked+categories+alpha.

Subject: [*] AliasCrony 2.0.0

AliasCrony is the ultimate alias manager. It has several features:
- Since aliases of applications lose the capability to have files dropped
on, when the original is on a different volume, AliasCrony can create
SuperAlias, a new alias kind, having drag capability always active.
- It can create aliases or SuperAliases and put them into specific folders
with one keystroke, if you're using the Drag&Drop mode. From its menus,
instead, you can select the destination folders by using a speedy way.
- It can update aliases (also as SuperAliases) on the fly or else through
its menus.
- It can add, to aliases, some useful custom icon, freeing a bit of space
on desktop (as before: you can add the custom icons on the fly or else by
using the proper menu).
- It can scan all on-line volumes to create lists of:
a) attached aliases,
b) unattached aliases,
c) aliases and originals on different volumes.
The created lists return useful infos about the aliases, moreover, from
these lists, AliasCrony can do several actions:
-It can retrieve and show aliases and originals.
-It can link/update/delete/move aliases.
-It can show the Finder's Info window, about aliases and originals.
-It can update aliases of applications to SuperAliases.

The AliasCrony 2.0.0 package contains two versions of the application:
AliasCrony 2.0.0 (68K) for 68K Macs or, in emulation, for Power Macs.
AliasCrony 2.0.0 (PPC) for Power Macs.

It's Internet Config aware and requires at least System Seven to run.

*** *** Chipmunk Basic README *** *** (version 3.5.0, 96-Sept)

Chipmunk Basic is a freeware old-fashioned Basic Interpreter, accelerated
for the PowerMac, yet still compatible with old 68k Macs running System 6.
Features include support for a simple sprite graphics engine, sound,
MacinTalk speech, MacTCP, AppleScript, Drag&Drop and OOP programming.

Every personal computer should come with a simple, easy to learn,
programming language. Chipmunk Basic was my contribution for the very first
PowerMacs. This version is a both bug fix and new feature release. It is
still free for educational and non-commercial distribution and use (but
only for those who don't believe that using the BASIC language causes brain
damage. :-)

Chipmunk Basic only comes with a man page and a quick reference to the Mac
specific functions. The language is mostly compatible with books on
programming in BASIC that were written between 1978 and 1990.

Permission is granted to include this version of Chipmunk Basic on CD-ROM
compendiums of the Info-Mac and UMich archives. Please replace older
versions of Chipmunk Basic that are in the archives with this version.
Please make sure that any redistribution includes the documentation.

Please send bug reports to . Updates and docs are
at the Chipmunk Basic Home Page .

Shortened version history:
Version 3.3.2: fixed sprite turn bug, added Quicktime midi sound Version
3.3.7: fixed integer rounding; added "COM3:" to use serial driver Version
3.4.0: fixed default voice in say, input eof bug, pref file bug Version
3.4.5: fixed bugs in hex$, moveto, button clear, error msgs. Version 3.4.8:
added matrix ops, changed precedence of "not" operator,
fixed memory leaks, fixed nested if-then & select-case bugs Version 3.5.0:
fixed bbedit bcmds for accented characters.

Subject: [*] Hand Pointer 1.1

Hand Pointer is a free system extension that replaces the mouse's arrow
pointer with a hand pointer similar to the one used in the Be OS.

Who wrote it?

Long story. Read the enclosed documentation.

What's new in version 1.1?

Due to requests, Hand Pointer now includes Left Handed Pointer, a version
for left-handed folks. Hand Pointer 1.1 has better documentation, too.

There are ResEdit resource files included as well. For use with Netscape
Navigator and Cyberdog, a Be OS-like hand pointer is displayed when the
mouse is moved over a clickable area.

Lastly, I have a new email address.

Have fun!

_ICON Hardly Wait_ finds and shows a variety of graphic resources that are
used in Macintosh programs. _ICON Hardly Wait_ will read though a drive, a
folder, or a single file looking for these little pictures. It is possible
to see these icons with other programs, such as ResEdit, and to change
them, but ResEdit is useful only if one knows where the icons are. _ICON
Hardly Wait_ can find them.

The types of graphic resources which ICON Hardly Wait can find include:

ICON, SICN, cicn, PAT, PAT#, ppat, ppt#, ICN# , icl4 , icl8, ics# , ics4,
and ics8.

(It only finds one type at a time.)

The program is a entertaining program that makes previewing CD-ROMs fun to

Subject: [*] The Medieval Period

The Medieval Period lists and counts files based on the extensions to their
names. An extension to a name is a bit of text after a period, as in
"readme.txt", where the ".txt" part is the extension. (The program lists
files with a period in the middle, and The Medieval Period sounded better
than The Middle Period.)

I wrote this little application to help keep track of a cross-platform
project with many thousands of files. (I am not sure when the results will
get published, but hopefully soon.) The program let me get lists of files
of various types (extensions), which helped me make sure that I had the
files I wanted to have. I am not sure of what other use it is, but if I
found it useful, someone else might as well.

This program is shareware ($5)

Version Master is an internet based application which lists the version
numbers of the software on your system and, at your request, connects to
our server via the internet to receive the most recent or current version
numbers.

Our server can also send you email whenever a newer version appears on the
net. Now you can quickly and easily stay abreast of all the minor revisions
(a.k.a bug fixes) as well as the major revisions (bug fixes and new
features) for all your software. We'll be adding ftp locations so you can
immediately download patches and upgrades which manufacturers make

Version Master requires System 7, and access to the internet. The Internet
Config system is strongly recommended (free copies are available at all

It sounds like you are very close to the solution. When you 'Modify
View' simply set the 'Format' to 'Digest.' It is probably set to 'Setext'
which is fine for TidBits (among others), but you should set it to
'Digests' to view digests. BTW-you can set the default 'view' in

Subject: 6100 DOS card works on 68040 PDS slot

The DOS card that comes in the 6100/66 DOS compatible works just fine in
the PDS slot of 68040 Macs. I had a DOS card, and noticed that when
removed from the L-bracket the plug looked like it would fit in my q700.
So I held my breath, tried it, and it worked. It even works in a 33MHz
speed-bumped q700.

I had to start from scratch, since I didn't have the original CD that came
with the 6100. I downloaded Apple's "DOS Compatibility 1.5" drivers. This
lets you install the proper control panels & extensions that run on the Mac
side. I then switched over to the PC side and installed DOS from a
standard MS DOS 6.22 disk set. The next step was to install the DOS side
of the "DOS Compatibility 1.5" package (there was one Mac & one PC disk
image in the archive). I then installed Windows 3.1, using a standard set
of windows disks, using a winsetup.bat file put on by the Apple DOS-side
installer. I finally ran the Apple DOS-side disk again in order to install
some Windows-related Apple tweaks that need Windows installed first to
work.

The card works just fine. I put in a memory chip (72-pin), which greatly
improves performance of the Mac half of the computer over when the Quadra
700 motherboard memory was being shared. I installed WordPerfect 5.1, and
the test page printed perfectly to a PostScript printer. Windows also
boots very quickly.

I humbly suggest you use Eudora itself to read digests, by bursting them.
If you're running Eudora 3.0, it's *very* easy with the Burst extended

MailConverter -- a little messier, but no worse than using EasyView. Both
are freeware, available on info-mac mirrors. Disclosure: I wrote them :)

What ways are there to connect to my mac at work from my mac at home.
I know of the folowing:

1. ARA (Needs the ARA client application) (slow?)

2. Buy an appletalk/PPP capable LAP driver like Intertcon, Tribe.

3. Connect via Netlink Remote directly to my mac. (Need netlink remote

Are there other good alternatives. Is it e.g possible to start a type

Indeed, Bus Errors can occur on 68030s, 68040s, PowerPC 604s, and
all of their bretheren. Usually, a Bus Error indicates that the program
tried to read or write from/to a memory location in the computer that
doesn't exist or is otherwise unavailable for the program's use. So if we
had a computer that had 8 bytes of memory, and we tried to access byte 9,
we'd get a bus error, because that memory location does not exist (the bus
doesn't go that far, as it were). Bus errors can also pop up if programmers
access the memory at address 0, since that area holds addresses of critical
low level OS routines for the processor.
And to answer your survey, I have a full 68040 in my Quadra 610 and
get bus errors from time to time (rather frequently while programming...).

My two-year old Color Stylewriter Pro has been printing with black streaks
through red and yellow graphics and text. I figured that it needed a new
print head so I replaced it. That didn't help. So far, besides replacing
the print head (a very expensive endeavor) I have:

1. Replaced all the ink cartridges (twice).
2. Cleaned all the in cartridges 3 or 4 times.
3. Supercleaned them twice.

I've also aligned the print head several times. If I take it to the shop
for repair, I'm told I'll have to pay $100 just to have them look at it.

I thought it might be the new "double-barrelled" black ink cartridges
causing the black to smear across the other colors but my friend has the
same printer and uses the same cartridges with no difficulties.

I'm tired of seeing zebra stripes thourh my red and yellow printing and
don't relish the idea of buying a new printer.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Well, there's always the brute force method, which also ensures a current,
working backup.

1. Buy second hard disk, same size as primary.
2. Every ; attach second hard disk.
3. Copy everything from primary disk to secondary.
4. Set secondary disk to startup, restart machine.
5. Erase primary disk; copy everything back from secondary to primary.
6. Set primary disk to startup, restart.
7. Put secondary disk back into the secure storage location.

Now your primary disk is completely defragmented; as a bonus, you have a
current backup.

This method will not do the "optimization" performed by Speed Disk et. al
[moving System files to front of the disk, etc.], but you can accomplish a
fair amount of that with partitioning.

I think the BSP may use a somewhat non-standard set of AT commands for CID
delivery since it effectively has to simultaneously support 3 ports (2
voice and 1 data); that may be the source of difficulty for the developers
of that software.

Consider PowerPhone from Quicomm, currently in public beta testing.
Although I am hesitant to use beta software, I must say PowerPhone seems
solid. It does just what you want, and more (allows you to create a
database and ID's incoming calls by the name you use in your DB, allows you
to dial someone by name, etc.). Please contact me directly for an e-mail
address (I can't get to it today).

But that's probably an AppleScript.

Since you have QuickKeys, you could make up a sequence yourself and assign
it to whatever key you want. This is pretty much QuickKeys' reason for
being.

Here are two ways to go about it:

1. Create a sequence that performs the menu/dialog commands that vex you so.

2. Create a sequence that deletes the cache folder through whatever file
deletion mechanism QuickKeys provides.

I don't use QuickKeys, so I have no idea if it allows you to delete files.
It may rely on AppleScript to do this.

If you were running Frontier, you could add a command to NetScape's shared
menu that would do this; the script would be something like:
file.delete("Boot:System:Preferences:Netscape =9F:Cache =9F")

Subject: Performa 6200 & the Internet

I'm trying to get a client's Performa 6200 up on the Internet but am
experiencing some trouble...wondering if anyone else has any ideas. I've
tried everything I can think of and Apple has nothing on file so...

Configuration:

Hardware:
CPU: Performa 6200 RAM Installed: 8MB
Modem: tried two different Supra 28.8 v.42 and also a Supra 14.4 v.32

Software:
System: tried v7.5.3 & v7.5.5 TCP: v2.06
PPP: FreePPP v2.5.2 Browser: Netscape v2.02 & v3.0
Other: RamDoubler v1.6.2 and SpeedDoubler v1.3.1

Background:
1. Internal Global Village modem has been removed from Performa.
2. Have tried using both the modem and printer ports with no difference.
3. Have tried several different modem init strings with minimal difference.
4. Same configuration used on an 8Mb Duo230 using Open Transport works fine.
5. Have performed clean re-installs of the OS, FreePPP and Netscape and
zapped the PRAM.
6. Have removed all non-OS and non-required Control Panels and Extensions.

Problem:
Thru-put on the Performa is averaging under 50 bytes per second with some
spikes going up to the low hundreds. However, using the same
configurations, into the same ISP, with any other system sees thru-put
averaging in the high hundreds with spikes up to 2k bytes per second. The
expanded deatail window of FreePPP indicates significant hardware and CRC
errors occurring with the Performa connection. However, running diagnostic
software like MacEKG shows no problems with either serial port on the
Performa.

Has anyone else out there had any like trouble setting up a 6200 or have
any ideas on what to try next??

TIA,
Stan

PS. I'll summarize any response back to the group.

Subject: Problems with PPP! Help!!

Hi folks!

I've been having some problems with my PPP connection as of late...

In the time it takes me to read and/or respond to my email which has
downloaded from Eudora, my PPP connection is lost... and I have to
redial... over the course of an hour of email work, I have to dial
back in 2 or sometimes 3 times! My service provider cuts off "idle"
connections after 20 minutes...

Is there a small utility available which I can run in the background that
will keep the PPP
connection busy, so that I don't lose the connection?

I know I could run something through Netscape or download a file via Fetch,
but this seems a
bit extreme when all I want to do is read and respond to email...

Any help offered would be greatly appreciated!

Open Options/General Preferences/Helpers and make sure that you have
exactly one line for 'application/mac-binhex40' and it is set to Launch
your StuffIt expander, and recognizes suffix 'hqx'.

btw you haven't totally re-installed Navigator if you haven't removed the
"Netscape =9F" folder from the Preferences folder. Of course then you will
have lost all your Preferences. You only need to do a total re-install if
you get crashes with Navigator 3.0. Apparently you did a total re-install
and should have fixed the problem; anyway I've outlined a less drastic
solution above.

You need any nubus Card from apple (there was a lovely 8/24 for maybe 200$
last time i looked.
I've got an old MacII card for real cheap (40$?) if you come and fetch it
in Switzerland... And see Matterhorn and Geneva's beautiful floral clock
and remarquable fountain by the way ! ;-)
Seriously, look around for an old Mac II, IIfx, IICx there should be a card
inside and just about any would work on that good 13inch Apple monitors.
Try and buy the card alone for real cheap. (stay away from the rare
accelerated ones even from Apple (8-24GC I think))

Subject: Request: Software-only Info-Mac digest

I am overly thankful for the work of all people behind Info-Mac, and I
appreciate the digest for keeping us all tuned about Macintosh freeware and
shareware. In my view, their mere existence is a strong argument in favor
of the Macintosh platform as such.

However, I read the digest only for the software information and always
skip the Q&A section. For that purpose, I use the newsgroups
comp.sys.mac.apps and, more frequently since it's in my native language,
de.comp.sys.apple. I don't mind the existence of the Info-Mac Q&A section
as such, but I would prefer a "lean" "software news-only" version of the
digest which one could alternatively subscribe to. With the Q&A section
eating up about 50% of the digest length, I receive about 10-20 "redundant"
kilobytes per day and about ten extra online minutes per month (here in
Europe, this is an important issue because local telephone rates are
extremely high so that regular Internet use becomes a $100 hobby).
Downloading the Info-Mac digest from comp.sys.mac.digest or from directly
>From an Info-Mac FTP mirror doesn't change anything since the software and
the Q&A sections aren't separated there either.

Subject: System 7.5.3 Unity (C: Ctd)

Another evening and another several hours diddling with the "unity" version
of System 7.5.3. It's a good thing I'm an old person who hasn't had a life in
years.

I spent this evening working up boot floppies for Macs of the PPC persuasion.
I didn't expect any more problems than I saw with the 68K boot floppies. I
was right. Copying the new System and baby enabler to existing boot disks
worked admirably. After first removing the PB5300 enablers that were there.

There was less space available on the floppies afterwards. The 7.5.3 unity
System is twice the size of the 7.5.2 System on my original PB Disk Tools. Not
as bad a situation as with the 68k boot floppies I created last evening. The
PPC version of System is 2/3 the size of the 68k version. Is Apple trying to
tell us something? Like throw your 68k Mac in the dumpster. For sure it isn't
going to accomodate the next, presumably larger, Norton Disk Doctor on a
floppy.

Then just for the hallibut, I decided to use SAM's "startup disk builder" app
to create a SAM boot floppy from scratch. I had a sneaking suspicion it would
fail, and I was right. Symantec's Norton and SAM disk builders want a Disk
Tools floppy as a template. The DT floppies that come with 7.5.3 unity are
named Disk Tools 1 (68k) and Disk Tools 2 (PPC). Startup Disk Builder refused
to recognize DT2 until I renamed it just plain Disk Tools.

I have no doubt that the same applies to the 68k Disk Tools 1 floppy. Unlock
both of those puppies and get rid of the numeric suffix.

This is as much as I care to do, and to report on, for the System 7.5.3 Unity.

Until/unless I find something else worth sharing with the I-M community.

Once again, my children. Keep current with your software. Blessedly, a LOT of
