Subject: [*] Johns WP Outlining 5.0.1
This major upgrade provides what may be the most competent overall
writing/outlining engine available on the Mac. Version 5.0.1 of these
WordPerfect outlining macros substantially expands the feature set, as well
as offering more robust operation and optimized speed.
My design goal was MORE 3.1, widely regarded as the best outliner ever
written for the Mac. I have matched that program's outlining functionality,
while paying careful attention to interface, ease of use, and integration
with the rest of the WordPerfect Mac environment.
New features:
+ automatic level control
+ comment boxes (speaker's notes)
+ automatic cross-referencing of outline topics + variable levels of indent
Features maintained in this version:
+ indentation of each entire outline topic to its proper level + collapse
any topic (hide its subtopics), of the outline to the right of a chosen
level
+ fold any topic (hide all but the first line), or fold all topics to the
left of a
chosen level
+ change the entire outline to plain or styled text formatting with one
command, using the level-specific style sheets + sort topics
alphanumerically or numerically + mark topics for a table of contents,
maintaining separate levels of indentation
+ change the auto-updating labels to text, so you can export the outline
into another program
+ change the outline into plain text, so you could start a paper as an
outline, edit it in that form, and then convert to regular text + check the
entire outline for logical structure + point-and-click moving and copying
of topics + cloning topics within an outline or among different outlines +
user-definable styles unique to each level + ability to gather topics in
any order, and paste copies of them anywhere.
Free for non-commercial distribution and use. May be included on UMich and
Sumex CD's.

KlepHacks Announces MacFolklore II
9/5/96 -- KlepHacks Shareware announced today the release of MacFolklore
II, the original Macintosh trivia game. The $5 shareware quiz game now
includes more than 150 questions about the history of Apple and the
Macintosh personal computer.
MacFolklore began as an online game for a BBS in 1994, but began
distribution as a standalone product in 1995. Since then, the program has
been redesigned from the ground up with brand new questions, a killer new
interface, and KlepHacks' exclusive "Puffy Button Technology" (PBT). PBT
provides the unique sense of feedback when clicking on a button that makes
it more pleasurable to click.
MacFolklore questions have been featured as part of MacUser's game called
"You Don't Know Mac" and were asked to game contestants at Power
Computing's booth at MacWorld Expo '96 in Boston. The questions range from
Apple advertisements to secret Macintosh projects and codenames. Registered
users receive the latest versions of the questions files and detailed
instructions on how to use the MacFolklore quiz engine to easily write
their own quiz games without any programming. All users are encouraged to
submit new questions to the question database, which can be done online
from the MacFolklore home page.
MacFolklore II is available for download immediately from:

Subject: [*] Mercutio MDEF v1.3
This version includes new documentation in Adobe Acrobat format. The free
Acrobat reader is available from http://www.adobe.com.
Mercutio MDEF 1.3
=================
The Mercutio MDEF is a Menu DEFinition resource that allow developers to easily
and elegantly extend the power of their application menus. These MDEFs allow
menus to have multiple-modifier key-equivalents (e.g. shift-command-C),
custom icons, item callbacks, and other goodies.
Major feature additions and changes since 1.2 are:
- Support for window font/size: Mercutio now correctly draws popup menus in
the current font and size. This means you can use Mercutio for Geneva 9-pt
popup menus and the like.
- Graphic icons for non-printing keys: non-printing key equivalents such as
page up/ down, home/help, etc. can be drawn as text or as icons that look
like the keys on the extended keyboard.
- Noticeable speed-up on text-only menu items.
- Substantially increased stability; fixed several memory-related bugs.
- Various cosmetic changes, optimizations and minor bug fixes.
- New software license -- please read as it defines the terms under which
you may use Mercutio.
Other changes and notes about this release are in the "About Mercutio 1.3"
file included in the archive.
The Mercutio MDEF works under System 6.0.4 or later, with or without Color
QuickDraw. Mercutio is fully compatible with System 7, and supports all the
features of the system MDEF. Integrating the MDEF into your program
is shouldn't take more than 15 minutes.

Scrollites=A9
By Layne Karkruff
Blue Sky Heart Graphics=C5
Scrollites=A9 is an ~Aaron patch designed to replace the "arrow" scroll
buttons in your windows with colored "glassies" that light up when pressed.
The effect is quite entertaining, and you will most likely find yourself
opening folders just to play with them. There are 4 colors...blue, purple,
red and green. The close box is transformed into a glassie as well, and
there are options for changing the color of it. (Of course, any experienced
"ResEditor" can hack around and make the glassies all blue or all purple,
change them around or whatever.)
The effect works best on monitors with at least 256 colors. Included are 2
patches, one for Aaron 1.4 and one for Aaron 1.5. Check to see which
version you have installed before installing Scrollites, and use the
corresponding Scrollites file. Please don't forget to work on a *copy* of
~Aaron on the desktop....Don't work on an installed ~Aaron.
=C4 I've uploaded hundreds of original icons to AOL in the past few months,
all freeware. (Check out BluSkyIcons #1-5, wherever fine icons are posted.)
I've decided to make the Scrollites shareware this time at the nominal fee
of $2.00. This is because I spent a long time creating and *tweaking* them
until I got them just right.....I wanted them to be the absolute best I
could do. Also, since they light up when pressed on, there's the matter of
that tiny electric battery in each one that....ohwellnevermind.
So if you like them enough to send 2 bucks, by all means do so. I'd also
love to hear any feedback on Scrollites,.... the acknowledgements are what
inspire me to create more graphic add-ons for the best desktop computer in
the world, Macinsquash.
Thanks : )

Subject: ?? Easy View & Digests via Eudora
I've been using Easy View to read TidBits and I've wanted to use
it for other digests I get via my 'net email, including MacWay,
daw.mac and deckusers.
But for any of these other digests I can't seem to construct a
View that will display the sections, only the chapters. And the
whole point is to be able to see the sections and navigate
directly to the items of interest, ignoring the rest.
I've saved a message (a digest) to a folder (I've tried saving in
ClarisWorks WP and also in BBEdit Lite 3.5.1 - mox nix), tried
both with and without either/both of the "Guess Paragraphs" and
"Include Headers" options, constructed a View trying every
available option from within the Include Text and Modify View
menus...
Because I can see the hyphens or other characters that the EV Read
Me describes as a condition for successful digest viewing I'm
assuming that I've missed something important either about how to
save the files correctly out of Eudora or about how to construct
the appropriate view for a given digest.
Are there bold Macateers (won for all and all for won) who can
advise me about this?

Or check the forsale newsgroups. I just did a DejaNews search on
"macintosh video card nubus sale" and came up with quite a few hits; one of
which was a fellow offering a couple 8-bit Nubus video cards for $50 apiece.
I've seen prices similar to that in other forsale postings; I don't think
you'll need to go even as high as $200; that is, if an 8-bit card is
sufficient.

In order to connect more than two systems together with AppleTalk you need at
least a LocalTalk
network. The LocalTalk network can be made using Apple's LocalTalk boxes, the
PhoneNet box from
Farallon or with some simple soldering. Checkout the following site for the
soldering option called
CapNet:
http://mips.jura2.uni-hamburg.de/~kai/LAM_HTM/cap1.htm
I use a Farallon PhoneNet network and I've got the laser printer on the second
floor connected to
my Mac on the third floor and another Mac on the second floor. It works great
and doesn't really
cost that much (about $20 per connection box). If I had found the CapNet option
earlier I would
have checked that out first, it only costs $1 worth of parts per connection
box.
The maximum tested
number of boxes that can be connected to the network is 10. The maximum tested
length of the
network is 400 ft (120 m).
Good luck!

Tired of freeze-ups from depleted memory, I doubled the RAM a few days ago,

the OS is consuming 17+ megs! The only change I made to the machine was
the additional RAM; all other settings (INITs, C-DEVs, etc.) remained
unchanged. Why is my system such a RAM-pig? Can I do anything about it?

Back before Open Transport you could use an Apple extension called

Does anyone know if there is a LaserWriter Bridge (or similar item) for

Hi Info-Mac,
I'm having a problem with my system after doing a clean install. Firstly I
copied my working system folder using 7.5.3 to an external hard disk as a

Then I did a clean re-install of my system on the internal disk and dragged
over all the pertinent stuff from the old system folder. Everything works
great except MacTCP. FreePPP logs in ok, but the my dynamic IP address
doesn't show in the TCP/IP control panel, plus none of my apps can access
MacTCP.
My external disk system seems identically configured, but it hooks up no

I have a friend who had the same experience and my ISP is baffled as well.
Anyone know what could be the problem here. I'm running OT on a '030 mac

12M RAM).
I am hoping to ultimately use the machine as a relatively self-sufficient
as a word processor. Apple talk would also be nice, but I realize that
the first part is probably tantamount to asking for the moon.
If you have any ideas or (better yet) if you know the answer, please email me.

Subject: System 7.5.3 Unity (C: 68K)
With all the talk about the 7.5.5 upgrade, it may seem a tad retro to mention
the 7.5.3 "Unity" system. I'm old. I'm allowed.
I finally got the Unity CD-ROM today. It wasn't easy. Our computing center,
which has an Apple system site license for the university, saw no reason to
get Unity. Hey, you only need your basic system CD-ROM plus the Update-2
CD-ROM to get the same thing. Only? I suspect those fine folk have never had
to rebuild a system from scratch. A two CD-ROM install is a bore.
Those of us with PowerBooks didn't get original CD-ROM software. Thirteen
floppies of 7.5.2 followed by the Update-2 CD-ROM is even more of a bore.
OK, naughtyword it. The comp center won't carry Unity? Let's buy it. Only
50 bucks a copy for the upgrade. I asked our secretary to order from one of
the usual mail order suspects. The order person said Apple specifically forbade
them from selling anything Apple to an educational institution. Kathy threw a
fit, jumped into it, and pulled it in after her. I suggested she cool it. I'd
call the same firm from home at lunch, have it sent to me, and get reimbursed
from the university. I did. No problem, mon.
Kathy had apparently called her usual-mail-order-suspect's account rep and
left him a blistering message. She was out when he returned the call, so I
took it. He was apologetic. Apple indeed forbids UMOS from selling computers
to educational institutions. Makes sense. We get 'em cheaper than from UMOS.
Order taker was confused. New guy? Probably. If any of you ".edu" folk get
the same kind of runaround, ask to speak with the order-taker's boss.
Anyhoo, Unity arrived today. I didn't have any HDs needing rebuilding (Where
were you when the 7.5.5 update killed my PB5300cs?), so I concentrated on the
System Tools boot floppies that accompanied the CD-ROM, one each for 68K Macs
and for PPC Macs. Life is short, and evenings are shorter, so I could only
check the 68K version this evening. Thought y'all might like to know what I
have found thus far.
System on the 68K disk went from 873 (Sys 7.5) to 900K. An enabler added 2K.
That is just barely enough for Norton Disk Doctor 3.2.1 to coexist.
Interestingly the 7.5.3 PPC Disk Tools System was a mere 679K. Rather more
than the 366K of my PB's original 7.5.2 boot floppy. No, the new 2K enabler
doesn't help. The old one was 103K. Major net loss.
But I digress.
I converted all my System 7.5 boot floppies to 7.5.3 Unity. I copied System
and 2K enabler to my existing boot floppies. That worked only if the app on
the boot floppy was named (and coded) Finder. Fine for SilverLining and for
MacTools. Not fine for Norton.
Silly goose that it is, the new System buggered the floppy boot blocks to
think that Finder should be Finder. Uh, no. Finder for NDD should be "Disk
Doctor." Same for Norton's Speed Disk. Finder must be "Speed Disk."
Easy fix with a boot block editor.
If yu haven't already gathered, this info is for those with the tools and
the knowledge to bugger a floppy's boot blocks. If you don't have both, this
note isn't for you. Have a nice day.
How does Unity affect PPC boot floppies? I haven't got there yet. Stay tuned.
Film at eleven.

Subject: Word 6.0.1 help needed!
Fellow Mac enthusiasts-
I need help *immediateley* with a perplexing problem. I am finishing my
dissertation in music and I'm inserting musical examples using the
following procedure:
1) Prepare example in Finale 3.5.2
2) Compile postscript file. (eps-no pict)
3) Open EPS file in Illustrator 6
4) Ungroup items
5) Select excerpt
6) opt. + copy (copies postscript to clipboard)
7) Word 6.0.1 "paste special" (picture)
By rights, this should work great, but when I print, some examples seem
to have a bitmapped image superimposed over the postscript graphics. What
is really frustrating is that some examples look fine!
All excerpts print fine from either Finale or Illustrator.
I don't think it's the printer, since I've tried different printers.
Before lambasting me for using Word 6, let me just say,
a) I know it's buggy and slow!
b) It's what we have on campus.
c) No other program I know of (not even Word 5.1) is sophisticated enough
to do *everything* I need to do in a document of this type.
(Anyone who's done a dissertation knows what I mean!)
d) I avoided using any Microsoft product as long as I could, doing all the
preliminary note-taking and composition in ClarisWorks.
e) I don't think a page-layout program like Quark or Pagemaker is going
to handle the footnotes, etc. I need very well.
Any ideas? All the computer whizzes around here are stumped. Please mail
to me directly. If there is enough of a response I will summarize for the
group. Thanks in advance!

Subject: [*] Mercutio MDEF v1.3
This version includes new documentation in Adobe Acrobat format. The free
Acrobat reader is available from http://www.adobe.com.
Mercutio MDEF 1.3
=================

Good luck!

Subject: Ballooning system 7.5.5
I have OS 7.5.5 on my PowerMac 7100/66. Last week, it was consuming 11.4
megs of RAM, out of my total of 16 megs.
Tired of freeze-ups from depleted memory, I doubled the RAM a few days ago,
from 16 to 32 megs. On booting my newly souped-up machine, I found that now
the OS is consuming 17+ megs! The only change I made to the machine was
the additional RAM; all other settings (INITs, C-DEVs, etc.) remained
unchanged. Why is my system such a RAM-pig? Can I do anything about it?

Subject: LaserWriter Network Printing
I have a LaserWriter Select 360 and a PowerMac 9500/132 running Open
Transport, which is connected to an ethernet network. Currently, each
time I want to print I have to close down my network applications, switch
over to the LocalTalk network (printer port), print the document, then
switch back to EtherTalk and re-launch my applications. What a pain!
Back before Open Transport you could use an Apple extension called
LaserWriter Bridge to automatically route your printing traffic to the
Printer port, even though the ethernet network is active.
Does anyone know if there is a LaserWriter Bridge (or similar item) for
Open Transport?
Thanks in advance,

Subject: MacTCP and clean installs
Hi Info-Mac,
I'm having a problem with my system after doing a clean install. Firstly I
copied my working system folder using 7.5.3 to an external hard disk as a
backup.
MacTCP.
My external disk system seems identically configured, but it hooks up no
problem while thrnal disk system hangs.
I have a friend who had the same experience and my ISP is baffled as well.
Anyone know what could be the problem here. I'm running OT on a '030 mac
with a PPC uprade card.

Mac Wizard,
I have a PowerBook Duo 230 with a dead hard drive, which I can not afford
to replace right now. I would like to create a startup diskette (1.44M)
which has sufficient resources to start a RAMDisk on the machine (it has
