Subject: [*] GetHyperText XCMD 1.1

GetHyperText takes four parameters, the id of the field, a flag indicating
a card field, a quoted string indicating the styles of the hot text, and
the id of the cursor to use. The field id is just a unique number that
HyperCard assigns to every object. The flag should be true if used in a
card field, false if used in a background field. The quoted string can
contain any of the characters "biuosce" which stand for bold, italic,
underline, outline, shadow, condense, and extend, respectively. These
characters can be used in any combination. The cursor id is any valid
cursor id (this stack contains a magnifying glass cursor with id =3D 666, th=
e
HyperCard hand cursor id =3D 128).

In order to make this external work with scrolling fields it is necessary
to check the scroll of the field to see if it has changed. If it has
changed, I force HyperCard to update the screen which in turn causes it to
update the data that the external uses to determine if the mouse is over
styled text.

The idea for this external was a similar external by Stan Gilbert, however,
since I wasn't able to locate him to license his, I had to roll my own. I
hope you like it.

As you move the cursor over certain items of text, the cursor changes to a
magnifying glass. Clicking on this text then could take the user to another
card, another stack, or just pop up some useful information as I've done.

Subject: [*] GetMonitors XFCN 1.5

GetMonitors takes no parameters. It returns the following info:
MonitorNumber, IsMainScreen, HasColor, BitDepth, BottomCoordinate,
RightCoordinate

MonitorNumber tells the order that the monitor's card was encountered,
IsMainScreen is true if the screen has the menubar, HasColor is true if the
monitor is set to a color mode (not grays or Black & White), BitDepth is
the current setting for that monitor, BottomCoordinate is the bottom pixel
on that screen, RightCoordinate is the rightmost pixel on that screen.

Here's what I had when I wrote it:

1,false,false,4,480,1280
2,true,true,8,480,640

Since the monitors sit next to each other, and the one on the right has the
menubar it is considered the main screen, so it's topleft is considered the
Origin, or 0,0 so it's RightCoordinate is 640, and it's BottomCoordinate is
480. The monitor next to it runs off of the built in video card, so it
loads first, but it's RightCoordinate is 1280, which is 640 from the first
monitor, plus 640 which is its width, and it's BottomCoordinate is 480, the
same as the main screen. This is controlled by how you move the screens
around in the Monitors control panel.

Norton Utilities comes with Speed Disk, which defragments and optimizes disks.
You can run it to check your disk first and then choose to defrag and
optimize.
It provides a colorful display of the contents of your drive so you can see how
it has fragmented. There's also an advanced mode feature that enables you to
find out how many fragments particular files have broken into.

Alsoft had a similar product. I think it was called DiskExpress. This was
rated by the Mac rags as the best disk optimizer, but I haven't noticed it
around
lately.

Either would work fine. As the name suggests, Norton Utilities includes a
suite
of useful utilities: tools for testing your mac, for recovering
deleted files, for recovering files after a crash, "CopyDoubler" (a faster
method
for copying or duplicating files), and various other tidbits. NU has become
"standard equipment" for a lot of Mac users. I find it essential.

Subject: Apple Mini-dock and Duo

Hello everyone!

I have a Duo230 which I've recently upgraded to the 2300 PowerPC. Now that
my Duo's much more useful because of it's increased capabilities, I'm in
need of Apple's discontinued Mini-dock.

I guess what I'm basically asking is whether anyone's interested is selling
one or knows where I might find one (new or used). I've seen Newer
Technology's UltraDock but, apparently, it doesn't have SCSI.

Any ideas or help are much appreciated,

Subject: Appletalk computer-to-computer cable?

Hi,
Ok. I thought this was simple.
I have a portable. I use a cable I have from my Stylewriter to connect
the serial ports of my portable and my SE/30, and I run appletalk between
them.
Now, I want to run both the stylewriter and keep the connection between the
se/30 and portable at the same time. So. New cable.
Well, gee. Seems like the stylewriter cable is pretty weird. I tried the
"Imagewriter II" version of the serial cable and that didn't work. I thought
about trying the straight through version of the cable, however, tested the
working cable with a multimeter first. It is weird: more than one set of pins
are reversed.
Where can I get such a cable and what the heck is it called?
TIA.

Cheers,
Gordon

Subject: DuoDock PSU HELP!!!!!

I'm trying to fix a DuoDock power supply - it's got the usual 'tick, tick,
tick' problem - I've 'scoped around the usual things but there's got to be
someone who knows which bits fail on these supplies (a European one, if
there's any difference....). One place I know that has hundreds of Docks,
ships these power supplies away by the score for repair, always the same
fault!

Any help gratefully received!

No free or share ware I know of.

Commercial options: Norton Utilities for Macintosh and MacTools Pro. Both
are from Symantec. Both available from the usual mail order suspects.

I have both. I am very paranoid.

If you must buy one, get Norton. I've had the least problems with it and
powermacs. I've had trouble with boot floppies and MacTools. And the MT
optimizer just flat dies on our secy's 7100.

A word of warning for optimizers. DO NOT OPTIMIZE A DISK YOU DO NOT KNOW IS
IN GOOD SHAPE. Sorry. Didn't mean to shout.

In the case of NUM, run Norton Disk Doctor and ensure there are no problems
with the HD. Only then is it safe to run Speed Disk (the optimizer).

I have updated to system 7.5.5 on a performa 575 using Global Village
Teleport Gold fax software . The fax worked fine till the
update was installed. Now I can no longer send a fax. The modem makes the
connection then I get a message then the connection drops. I
can receive a fax fine. I went back to system 7.5, still the same thing.
Did a complete install back up to 7.5.3 still will not work. Can someone
help me with this? Thanks in advance.

Subject: Word 6.0.1 Problem

Dear Digesters,

When I start Word, it asks me to insert disk "storage". This disk does
not exist any more.

I have tried creating a disk "storage" and inserting it but the prompt
comes back every time. I usually just click on cancel.

I have deleted everything I could find on my hard drive that said
MicroSoft or Word from the extensions, preferences, etc. and
re-installed. It still asks for "storage".

How do I get rid of the "insert disk" prompt.

All help is appreciated.

TIA

Chuck
