Subject: [*] "MacMorph" StartUp Movie (Stereo)

The "MacMorph" StartUp Movie is a QuickTime animation that can play
automatically when you start your Mac. It begins with a black background
and a metallic "M" that morphs into an "A," to a "C," to an "I," and so
on, to spell "Macintosh." When the "H" is complete, it disappears and
the word "Macintosh" in a blue, hi-tech font, floats up to center,
concluding the clip.

The movie is available in stereo, but a mono version is also available
for download here or at the Clixsounds WWW site at:

Movie Info:

Subject: [*] Al Bunny's Typing Class 1.40b

Hi,
Please accept my submission of the file Al_Bunny_140b.sit.hqx
This file contains the shareware "Al Bunny's Typing Class 1.40b"
This version fixes some bugs and makes a few changes.
Bugs fixed:
1. Now the user can leave the program in User_Defined_Speed mode
when closing the program. There was a bug which causes Al Bunny
fail to start if it was closed with User_Defined_Speed mode.
2. There was a bug in the supporting non-US keyboards which makes
the Pre-Defined keysets make little sense for non-US keyboard users.
This has been fixed. Now the German user should see the letter "z"
instead of "y" in level 2.
3. There is a mistake in US-Dvorak keyboard layout file. A correct
version is provided in this upload.

Changes made:
1. A small change in the Racing-Game mode. Now when the user enters
the correct string, the obstacle will be moved up.
2. A FREE site license offer to the U.S. elementary schools. A dialog
box was added for details about obtaining the free site license.

Subject: [*] BulkRate 2.5b6

BulkRate is an offline reader for FirstClass BBSs that runs on the
Macintosh. It can capture messages for offline reading and replying, and
can automatically retrieve attached files for you. BulkRate is
shareware - $25 US.

BulkRate 2.5 adds support for TCP/IP connections to FirstClass servers,
and in addition can make use of any available serial port for "normal"
modem connections - even PC Card modems.

** Changes in version 2.5b6 **

Made some changes to TCP/IP routines that should improve reliability.

Added compatibility with the upcoming FC Server 3.5 version of the CLUI
(assuming it is the same as the current CLUI on SoftArc Online).

Added (in Service setup->Exchange settings) the ability to change the
size at which outgoing messages will be divided into multiple parts;
feel free to set this as high as 32000. If a sending a large message
causes the CLUI message editor to crash, you should then lower the
number to less than the character count at which the crash occurred. I
suspect this change will turn out to be a support headache for me, but
we'll see.

Cosmetic changes to the Service settings windows for consistancy.

Another tweak to the incoming message list display to better accomodate
international date formats.

"Mark as unread" will now toggle the read/unread flag if all messages in
a selection are either read or unread; otherwise it simply marks as
unread. This is the same as FirstClass Client's behavior.

Speech Manager support added.

Subject: [*] CacheSaver 1.0.2

This is an update to CacheSaver, a shareware control panel designed to
periodically flush the Mac's disk cache to minimize data loss when your Mac
crashes. This release fixes display problems on small-format Mac screens
(Plus, SE, SE/30, and Classic models).

Like many people, you've probably found that increasing the size of the
disk cache in the Memory control panel can improve the performance of many
applications, especially web browsers like Netscape Navigator. The disk
cache speeds up disk input and output by keeping the contents of files in
RAM, rather than immediately reading or writing them on the disk.

The problem with using a large disk cache is that when you save
information, the data may end up staying in the cache for quite a while
before it really gets written to your hard disk. If your Mac crashes
before the cache gets saved, your data is lost.

CacheSaver addresses this problem by periodically saving (or "flushing")
the disk cache, thus minimizing data loss should your Macintosh crash while
you are working. You can set CacheSaver to flush the cache whenever your
Mac is idle for more than a specific amount of time, or it can do it
automatically at regular intervals. CacheSaver also provides a hotkey so
you can flush the disk cache manually.

In addition to the standard internet archives, information and updates are
available at:

This program may be included on the Info-Mac and Umich CD-ROMs.

A statistics shows you which answers were right and which weren't.

For more information please read "About Eartraining" and just check out the

*You need OMS 2.0 or higher (from Opcode, e.g. at http://www.opcode.com) to
use MIDI.

Use of MIDI is limited if you don't register! You're gonna be able to check

Subject: [*] EnterAct 3.7.6 Sept 96 - editor C++

EnterAct is a free language-aware editor for Macintosh C/C++/Java
programmers. Using hundreds of rules behind the scenes, EnterAct provides
instantaneous automatic context-sensitive definition and prototype display
in its "AutoLook" window, based on where you click or what you type. For
example, if you click after the name of a local variable in a method,
AutoLook shows you the full type definition of the variable (after
resolving any intermediate typedefs or #defines). You build a project
(there are separate file lists for source, headers and documentation),
update your dictionary (several files per second), show the AutoLook
window, and then use EnterAct like a regular editor. Also has code
templates, command-line or dialog-driven AWK, illustrated documents,
no-clip printing, indentation-preserving Paste, Drag and Drop (text, PICTs,
files, folders), an activities log recording in detailed plain English the
last 10,000 things you did, a graphic browser that shows inherited
(non-private) methods and underlines "user" as opposed to classes,
and all the standard features you'd expect.

V3.7.6 adds fully maintained marker popups for source/header files that
show argument summaries for functions and methods, full Java support, D&D
including dragging folder aliases onto your project window to add files,
and other "neat stuff" (including a way to convert illustrated documents to
HTML).

EnterAct needs about a 7 Meg partition, 68040@25Mhz minimum (works great on
a PowerMac), system 7 or later. Large screen (>= 1024x786) recommended.

Please feel free to include any version of EnterAct on your CD-ROMs.

couleurs a cause de l'utilisation de nombreuses couleurs. Afin de

To jump a peg, simply click on any peg on the board and drag it to

Program: Icon Rescue 1.0
Author: Alessandro Levi Montalcini
Price: Freeware (written for Icon Archiver users)
Source: ftp://ftp.alpcom.it/software/mac/LMontalcini

Icon Rescue is a freeware drag&drop utility that converts
Icon 7 and Zonkers! icon collections to folders containing
separate custom icon files. I wrote it for Icon Archiver users
who were stuck with old icon collections from these obsolete
utilities, since both of them can only extract one icon at a
time (which is really a pain if you have large collections
containing thousands of icons).
To convert your old Icon 7 and Zonkers! collections, drop
them on the Icon Rescue icon in the Finder or open them with
the Convert command in the File menu. The converted icons are
saved in the same folder as the original collection, so the
collection itself shouldn't be on a locked or full disk such as
a CD-ROM or a floppy (just copy the collections to your hard
disk if this is the case, and trash them after the conversion
is done).
After your icons are converted you may want to try out my
cool Icon Archiver utility, which is available on most online
services as well as my own ftp site.

Subject: [*] Jon's Commands 1.8

Here is Jon's Commands 1.8, one of the few "must-have" AppleScript
scripting additions. This version adds an "alias information" command
which returns info about an alias or alias file. Specifically, it returns
the path to an alias, it's server's name and zone, the volume the alias
points to, the alias itself, and a "was changed" boolean. You can prevent
the resolution of the alias, getting just the static information from it,
which allows you to scriptably replace broken aliases if you know how to
fix them given their path and/or server names (use the Finder to make new
replacement alias files).

Jon's Commands is always available on my web page at:

http://www.infoworkshop.com/~jonpugh/

Go easy on it for a while though, it's limping along at 28.8 until PacBell
gathers their ISDN feces together.

Jon's Commands is also free for non-commercial use. A commercial licence
is a simple $25 shareware fee. See the documentation for contact info.

Also, just for you complete readers, Jon's Commands includes an Apple Guide
which has descriptions of each command along with syntax and examples,
which can be pasted into your script editor. It's quite useful. Simply
place the guide file (or an alias) in the same folder as your script
editor.

Have fun!

Jon

Subject: [*] Mac-FTP-list Version 4.1.6

Type: Freely Distributed
category: communication, text

This is the latest {Sept 15, 1996} version this report and should replace
the previous version of mac-ftp-list.txt.

This is a update {Sept 15, 1996} to Mike Gleason and Bruce Grubb's Mac FTP
list. It lists over 200 mac anonymous ftp sites (some with notes), over
65 Mac web pages, and contains some instructions on how to use anonymous
ftp and find files as well a format chart showing which programs
decompress and decode which files. Also there is a section on how to
use certain files. This archive contains both the text and html versions.

Please note that the html part is actually four crosslinked files:
mac-ftp-list.html, ftp-list.html, www-section.html, and site-notes.html
that require HTML Browser such as Lynx, Mosaic or NetScape to view.

Must be in a monospaced font to be readable; Courier 10pt is recommended,
though Monaco 9pt or a PC equivalent can be used instead. Needs StuffIt
Expander or equivalent {unsitins.exe} to decompress.

Please send newly discovered macintosh sites (with IP numbers and
directories to check if possible), bug fixes, and comments to:
[email protected] or [email protected]

Changes: IP#s on the entire list checked and dual links added to those
sites that changed (40) on html version; discrepencies between text and
html versions (2) fixed;

Added sites: ftp.symantec.com; ftp.macfaq.com;

Defunct sites: tau.sm.luth.se; solaris.ims.ac.jp; cecelia.media.mit.edu;

Subject: [*] SetSoundVolume 1.5.8

How do you change your Mac's sound level? By going to the sound control
panel, right? By exiting whatever you are doing, going to the control
panels, finding the right thing, and then setting it. Well, suppose you're
in the middle of a game. Then what? Your boss is coming in... Then what?

The solution is SetSoundVolume, which is the simplest way to change the sound
level. And this version has been supercharged to allow use of the Function
keys, F1-F8 (and still allow other programs to use F1-F8!), to set the sound
level. F7 sets it to 7. No exiting, no nothing. Just pure simplicity.

SetSoundVolume is shareware, but compared with the number of times you'll use
it, the cost is extremely minimal. Imagine doing a routine task by hitting
just one key! You can completely customize the program, a control panel, as
well.

However you use your Mac, SetSoundVolume will make using it easier. Many
registered users have asked me why Apple didn't include something this good
with their computer. Until they do, there's SetSoundVolume.

Credit Cards now accepted.

Subject: [*] SmartKeys 3.1

SmartKeys 3.1 is a shareware control panel designed to help you type.
SmartKeys does this in three ways. First, SmartKeys automatically
corrects typing that violates conventional typesetting rules, such as
typing more than one consecutive space. Second, SmartKeys automatically
corrects fast typing errors, words that are often misspelled, such as
"teh" for "the" and "THe" for "The". Third, in the event of a system
crash, SmartKeys can keep a log of what was typed.

In version 3.1, a significant bug regarding the typing log was fixed.
There were a few circumstances where SmartKeys 3.0 would hang due to a
bug in the MacOS. These have been worked around. A number of other minor
bugs were fixed. In addition, a number of enhancements were added to
doubled capital and transposed word corrections. The typing log now keeps
around a previous version around, so previously typed text is kept around
after the current log has been deleted.

Try out SmartKeys for thirty days for free. SmartKeys is not crippled in
any way but after the thirty day free trial period, SmartKeys will begin
posting registration reminders. However, if you like it, please pay the
shareware fee of $15 (US). Users who have already registered 3.0 do not
have to re-register 3.1.

SmartKeys 3.1 supersedes SmartKeys 3.0.

Subject: [*] Space Mercs 0.9.5 - public beta release

Obligatory-hyped up-over generalizing-catch-phrase:
"Space Mercs takes the fast-action pace of Space War and meshes it with
the endless variety and economical factors of Scorched Earth to formulate
a one-of-a-kind game available only for Macintosh."

The goal of Space Mercs varies depending upon which game set is being
used, but usually you are trying to make as much money for your nation as
you can. The player that makes the most wins. To make money, your
nation has dropped you off into a distant mining zone. You are to scuttle
around picking up the ore deposits that appear. After an ore deposit is
brought on board, your processing equipment starts refining it. Once
complete, the valuable extract is beamed home; your nation cashes in, and
rewards you with some credits of your own.

The mining zones are located in disputed space, and you will most likely
find miners from other nations competing for the same ore. Fitted with
weapons, you hope to at least defend yourself if not swipe some ore
harvested by others. When your ship is destroyed, your emergency eject
device sends you home where you are fitted with another ship. Soon
enough, you'll be back to try and redeem yourself. When a zone is cleared
out and all ore processed, you return home. If the expedition was good,
you should be able to refit your ship in preperation for the next trip...

All of these sets were made with the built-in editor. With ease you can
alter any aspect of the game: weapon damage, mass, engine power,
everything! Also, in the resource fork of your game set, you can store
alternate graphics and sounds to give your game set a thematic flare.

System Requirements:
* 256 colors
* 13" monitor or larger (supports 640x480 and will use 832x624 if possible)
* 4MB RAM
* CPU: not sure about this one yet. 040's should work fine, low end 030's
might not. Let me know how it goes, and I might look into some more
optimization.

Subject: [*] Verbs & Nouns 1.1 - f.language teaching program

"Verbs & Nouns" is an application that helps in foreign languages
studies. It can be useful for foreign language students, teachers and
researchers.

The inflection of words is one of the difficult parts in learning many
foreign languages since there are a lot of inflection patterns.
"Verbs & Nouns" helps you to learn, refresh your knowledge and gather
information about foreign language verbs and nouns and their inflection
rules. There are also many other features of this program useful in
learning and research of foreign languages.

The program lets you define a foreign language verbs or nouns
databases and share them with other users. You can easily introduce the
inflection patterns (rules) for the regular words. You can also include
other information about each word like translation, grammar
characteristic, comments etc. in a very convenient form. Comments
(you can use many fonts and styles in the comment box) are useful to
store the example sentences associated with the given word and to
include some additional information. The feature of merging databases
makes sharing comments with other users very easy. The program has
an exercise window. It automatically generates the exercises to practice
the inflection or translation. You can gather the words that you have
learned already and let the program generate exercises just for this group
of words. You can also define many other groups of words (and collect
them in classes) to use them in exercises or for browsing. You can also
attach databases updated by other users to your own database (to share
comments, sound and automatically adding new words). The program
can use file sharing to share the same database file in the networked
environment (language labs). The program supports sound to associate
the sound samples with words.
