About the Keyboard Swapper INIT by Mattias Ellert

With this INIT installed, a change of the keyboard layout by typing
opt-cmd-space or cmd-space, or by using the keyboard menu, only affects
the current keyboard. If a key on a different keyboard is press, the INIT
automatically swaps to the script and keyboard layout last used by that
keyboard. The INIT also enables the keyboard menu on systems with only
one script installed.

See Read Me file for additional information.
Requires system 7.0 or later.

Subject: [*] Netscape App Switcher 1.0

Netscape App Switcher is an OSAX (Apple Script) application which allows
you to set up Netscape Navigator=81 to use separate programs for specified
URL prefixes. This is very useful because programs such as Eudora and
Claris Emailer (for "mailto:" URLs), Anarchie and Fetch (for "ftp:"
URLs), and NewsWatcher (for "news:" URLs) tend to be a lot more stable
than Netscape. NAS also allows you to set up URL prefixes that aren't
yet defined, making it possible to use Finger for "finger:" URLs, even
though Netscape doesn't include that.

What do I need to run NAS?

*AppleScript (only needed when you run the script.. You can remove it
safely afterwards)
*Netscape (I know versions 2.0 and up work, I'm not sure about others..)
*The application you want Netscape to use (DUH...)

How much does NAS cost?

NAS is FriendlyWare. *YOU* choose how much it costs, based on how
useful it is to you. If you use it, but don't want to pay, that's
alright too! The only thing I request in this case is that you send an
Email to me ([email protected]) telling me that you use it, and giving
any suggestions you have. However, if you do wish to send anything, my

Subject: [*] Odo Moldable WDEF

What it be?
Odo is a WDEF that changes its form based on its title. Odo looks for a PICT
resource that has the same name as its title to mold itself to. This is only of
interest to programmers and curiosity seekers.

Why the hell did you waste your time doing that?
I thought it'd be cool for startup screens - since they're rarely seen - to be
a
little more creative. I just wrote it today, so I haven't used it in any of our
software - yet.

What else?
Odo has two variant options:

Variant 1: Use BitMapToRegion() to create the window's structure (as
opposed
to OpenRgn(), DrawPicture(), CloseRgn().

Variant 2: Reserved for a frame - I removed this at the last moment to save 50%
code - since an algorithmic beveled frame that looks good after InsetRgn(rgn,
-6, -6) is damn hard - and - I assume the PICT may just as well have its own
frame.

Variant 4: The content region is empty, the Picture is automatically drawn.

See the demo file with ResEdit or Resorcerer to get the feel for what effect
Variant 1 has on your window. I've put a few demos (DLOGs and WINDs) in there,
most of which (oddly) look better with Variant 1 ON.

PEEKABOOx Word Game is a graphical variation on Hangman for young children
(ages 4 - 8). As the child guesses the letters in a word, a picture depicting
the word is slowly revealed. This is a fun way to learn the meaning of
written words and how to spell them. The game can be played in Spanish or
French, as well as English.

Have you ever seen numbers like "1-800-CALL-ATT" or "1-800-4-MACPLAY"
and wished that your phone number would translate to something cool
like that? Well, wait no longer. This program's main function is to
take a 3 digit area code or prefix, 4 letter postfix or 7 digit full
number and print out all the possible combinations of letter/words that
they make up. Most numbers translate to something at least mildly
interesting so you should find something to satisfy you. My friend's
phone number translated to UFO-SHOP, a local bulletin board translated
to TAX-OWOW and finally another friend's prefix translated to SEX.
Imagine being able to tell you friends that you phone number was
something like that instead of the usual dull numerical format.

Subject: [*] ProcessWatcher 3.0

ProcessWatcher is a simple utility application for Macintosh computers
running at least MacOS 7.0. It provides a very easy way of monitoring
the processes running on your machine.

ProcessWatcher can display two kind of windows: processes lists and
process information. Processes list windows merely display a list of
the running processes; process information window give information
such as the Process Serial Number, the active time, the launch flags.

ProcessWatcher can also connect to a remote ProcessWatcher application
(either ProcessWatcher or PWd, the ProcessWatcher background only
daemon application) to monitor the processes running on another
machine of the network.

Using ProcessWatcher you can also kill the running processes, launch
new processes, and send Open AppleEvents to running processes, easily
bring an application to the front... Version 3.0 adds some support
for scripting so you can open your remote connections automatically.

Subject: [*] Russian KCHR

This is an improvment of the Russian keyboard layout that comes with the
Apple Russian script.

i) The unshifted and shifted keyboard layouts have not been altered -- it
is still compatible with the Apple Russian hardware keyboards.

ii) Key combinations with option and option-shift have been altered so that
all Cyrillic letters in the Apple Cyrillic fonts are accessible from the
keyboard.

iii) The layouts have been made more logical so that lower and upper case
versions of non-Russian Cyrillic letters appear on the same key with option
and option-shift held down respectively, usually the same key as the
closest Russian letter.

The name of the file looks funny, it is 'Russian' written in Russian. Don't
change it. If the Russian script is installed it will be displayed
correctly in the keyboard menu.

Requires: Apple Cyrillic script and fonts (available via ftp from apple).

Shift Switcher Info
Holding down the Shift Key during Startup on a Mac running System 7 or
later disables the loading of Extensions, Control Panels and Startup items.
Some users may find this annoying if they are trying to prevent other users
tampering with their Machine. Shift Switcher is a simple utility to disable
the Shift Key of your Mac during the Startup process. The changes it makes
are permanent (unless you change them back of course) - you do not need to

Subject: [A] FTP between 2 remote machines

You can't ftp FROM an ftp server to an FTP client. Sort of by definition.
A client can either get or put to a server (assuming proper permission),
but a server can't initiate either action. So, if you want to ftp from
machine 1 to machine 2, controlling the whole thing from machine 3, you
have to:

1. Have servers on 1 and 2. Use a client on 3 to get the file from 1, put
it on 2. This is where being able to drag from one window to the other in
fetch or anarchie would be handy, but you are still moving things twice.

2. Get access to either 1 or 2 so you can run a client, and run a server
on the other. If it is a unix machine, telnet would be the way to go. If
it's a Mac or PC, Timbuktu or something of the sort would be a solution.

I don't know of any other way.

I'm Carl Huben, the author of the "piece of used food," and I'm frankly
disgusted not just by this peurile, pedantic letter, but also because
there is no basis for Hannes Hofer's claim that Digital Equalizer 2.0
permanently damaged his system.

Hofer wrote me personally a few weeks ago with this complaint (before
publically scapegoating my program) and I patiently explained that the
equalizer does not interact with the CD-ROM driver, and so can not have
directly caused these problems. It is true that the version 2.0 does
crash occasionally, and this may have indirectly resulted in the CD
troubles. But I don't think so. It doesn't take much common sense to
realize that the problem he describes could not have been caused by
a software crash, because the glitch remains even after he reinstalls
all the System Software. Either his description is inaccurate, or it
is a hardware problem which developed at about the same time of the
crash. Or maybe something else. But it's not directly due to the
equalizer.

I resent the fact that ignorant people are blaming my program for
problems that it could not possibly have caused. Yes, the equalizer
crashes occasionally on certain machines, but there is no basis
for Hofer's ridiculous claim of permanent damage. And Mr. Bloom's
further attack is equally unfounded. If you removed every program
that crashes some Macintoshes some of the time from info-mac, the
archive would fit on a floppy disk.

Finally, I'd like to add that a new version of the program is out;
it's titled, "CD Equalizer + Karaoke 3.0," and it fixes the harmless
crash-on-start bug that Mr. Bloom experienced. However, the new
version doesn't address Hofer's problem, because Hofer's problem is
unrelated to the equalizer.

I believe what Tristan had in mind (i.e. being able to conveniently drag &
drop to any folder in the Apple menu) can be accomplished using "Glidel" by
Gilles Berkovitch:

/info-mac/gui/glidel-30.hqx

It lets you drag an item to anything in a menu -- such as a command, like
Print, or an application or a folder in the Apple menu.

I am attempting to use the 286 emulator engine (SoftWindows 1.0 for PowerMac)
on a Performa 6116 (virtually identical to a PowerMac 6100/60) at work to
gain access to a shared FileMaker Pro 2.1 for Windows database that is set up
for multi-user availability. It is physically located on one PC, and is also
opened and used successfully from a second PC, often at the same time. The
networking protocol is Windows for Workgroups 3.11, i.e., "NetBEUI".

I bought the Performa used with the idea of joining this network and being
able to access and modify data entries from my desk, as well as tweaking the
structure of the database without kicking end users off one of the other two
machines. I had successfully linked to a WFW netowork at home (yes, the PC
users in my house actually have an ethernet network set up and I connected to
it), using my PowerMac 7100/80, originally with SW 1.0 and later with SW 3.0,
by installing Microsoft's "Windows for Workgroups 3.1 Add-on". (To make
Windows more palatable to me and consistent with what we use at work, I also
installed Norton's Desktop 2.0, which gives you Mac-like disk icons and lets
you drag files onto the desktop from them which can then be double-clicked to
open them). With this setup, I was able to mount the shared drives of my
housemates on my SoftWindows desktop, and, once I finally realized that
SoftWindows 1.0 does not like Open Transport and reverted to classic
AppleTalk, repeated this experience at work. So: what DOES work is that I
have an icon on my SoftWindows Norton Desktop that represents the FileMaker
database which is on a Gateway across the room, and when I double-click it,
it runs FileMaker and the database opens and I can work on it from my desk.
But only if no one else is using it at the time, because what DOES NOT work
is FileMaker's "multi-user" mode because FileMaker thinks there is no network
available and won't enable it. And, similarly, once I'm in the database no
one else can open it. The problem goes away if I use SoftWindows 3.0 instead
(still using the WFW 3.1 Add-on and Norton Desktop, etc., i.e., nothing else
is changed)--then FileMaker reports that NetBEUI networking has been
installed correctly and multi-user mode is enabled. But SW 3.0 is a dog on a
60 MHz 601-based Mac and I have no need for enhanced mode!

Claris, so far, has been next to useless on this matter. The guy who
answered the phone @ their tech support line first tried to explain that the
problem was that I was opening the database incorrectly, that I was supposed
to launch FileMaker, click on "Hosts" or "Network", and link to the shared
database like that, and that simply double-clicking the icon of the database
file itself would not work. Kept insisting on this even after I explained
that this technique works just fine on either of the two PCs, regardless of
whether the database is already in use or not. Then when I explained that it
works fine under SoftWindows 3.0 which has the 486 emulator engine (but
intolerably slowly), he finally got it that I was not using a PC and went
into broken-record mode, saying only "Claris doesn't support FileMaker
networking for Windows on a Mac, we only support FileMaker netoworking for
Windows on a PC" until I finally hung up.

Anyone know what's going on here?

Subject: Help for School connection

Our school has a Macintosh Lab with 17 LCIIIs hooked to a Quadra 800
which acts as a file server. There are 18 LCIIIs in classrooms wired to a
Quadra 650 in the library which links these computers into the Quadra in
the lab. We would now like to go outside the school.
What we are looking for is a dedicated internet connection so that
teachers could turn on the LCs in the morning, starting up with Netscape.
Students could access the Web from any computer.
We would also like email and the ability for teachers with modems at home
to be able to dial into school to access their files on the Quadra. Some
teachers have their own internet accounts, but others would just want to
dial into the school - thus, a second line.
We have ethernet connections and run Appleshare 3. LCs have system 7.1
with 12 meg of RAM.

Can someone help us? If you are at a school that has gone through this
process and can offer advice, please let me know.
If you have advice on modems, type of phone line (is a 28.8 connection
very good if 23 machines are trying to use it at the same time)?, ideas
on whether on non Power PC is fast enough, connect me please.

We are located in southern New Hampshire. If you know of a school using
Macs that has this type of connection in our area and would allow a few
of us to visit - same thing.

the current setup there was a note stating that to run at speeds
higher than 57.7K baud, it was necessary to have an extension called
SerialDMA installed. It also stated that this was available in system

Furthermore I don't see any reference to it on my System 7.5.3 CD in

I can appreciate that Snapshotter would fix the problem if you remembered
to run it beforehand. What is one supposed to do ... Keep a snapshot of
ones entire hard drive just in case the icons mess up? Should one take
a snapshot whenever one moves icons around?

This post is to plead for someone to make a drag and drop application
that:
* Changes the icon view to View by small icon (from icon view),
_without_ changing the icon position. That is, change one
parameter in the folder without changing the other.

Thus, when a crash happens and you see a messed up folder, you just
drag it and drop it on the folder fixer. Could someone create such
a program? I could create a test folder as a sit file (does it save
icon positions?)

Hi,

I just bought a used Mac IIcx for my son. I has 5Meg of memory.
4 256K SIMMS and 4 1Meg SIMMS. My question, is SIMM memory for
the Mac identical to SIMM memory for PC compatibles. I would
like to get 4 4Meg SIMMS to replace the 256K SIMMS. I know that
the IIcx use 30pin SIMMS but I an unsured of the specification is
this a 1X32 4X32 or what? I see 4Meg 1X32 SIMMS in my local
computer store for around $30.00, but MacUser has ads for 4Meg
SIMMS around $59. What is the difference. Any guidance would be
appreciated.

One of the items it is supposed to help with is improving memory

Boy were they right. It reminded me of a boss i had once. It managed my

Two hours later i was back to normal with 7.5.3. I used to have 16 MB RAM

but i would caution people on the wonderfulness of this upgrade.
Sometimes i wonder if i will ever live long enough to use up all the time i

I'd figured that one out all by myself. But here's one I could use some
help with:

I have two hard drives that I don't need to mount very often, at SCSI 1
and 6. I use Sleeper to spin them down after startup (via the Sleep Now
thingie in my Startup Items folder) to reduce the ambient noise in my
workspace. I also use APS drivers (v. 4.0.7), and neither of those drives
has "scan at startup" selected. So far, so good.

Here's the problem: every time I restart or shut down, *something*
triggers a SCSI scan which awakens those two drives, and nothing happens
until they're spun up, even though they don't mount. Nothing in my
startup sequence loads from them, and if they are powered off there's no
trouble booting. I'm not sure when this behavior started, but it did not
always happen. I am not interested in dropping back to APS 3.8, thank you.

Ideas?

Gory details: 6100/60, 40 MB RAM, 7.5.3, also running Energy Saver cpanel
v. 1.1 (for my monitor).

Positioning n-up images

Background
To allow the efficient production of A5-sized user manuals from a =

currently produced using Word 6 and the 2-up option of LaserWriter 8. =

The technique involves altering the PRFS resource of LaserWriter 8 to =

you can significantly overload the pages range box to produce multiple =

Problem
The problem with this technique is the lack of control over the positioning=

Hi All

I have just updated my PowerMacs to OS 7.5.5 and I am pleased to say that
it works very well. The 7.5.5 updater has no fancy features but it appears
to correct many of the faults associated with update 2. For one thing, my
Mac no longer crashes incessantly. I have also noticed a considerable
speed increase in such things as opening applications and in printing out.
7.5.5 has increased the speed of the Mac by sorting out, amongst other
things, the problems with the memory.

IMHO Update 2 was an embarrassment for Apple since they were in a rush to
release it. When OS 7.5.4 was withdrawn I was fearing the worst. However,
7.5.5 is very good and I would recommend that all those using 7.5.3 update.
For those of you with a PowerMac and still running 7.5.1 or 7.5.2 why not
install update 2 and 7.5.5. As far as I am concerned the results seem
good.

I just hope that Apple releases Copland when it is ready and not bow to
commercial time constraints.

Best Wishes

If you want to set that external disk as the startup disk for more than one
boot, use the "Startup Disk" control panel.

If you want to bypass the internal disk for a single boot, hold
command-option-shift-delete while the computer starts up.

That latter tidbit is found in the "Shortcuts" screen, accessible from the

4.2 is already loaded."

Well, I looked into my extensions folder and found the driver.
I Got Info on the driver and it clearly states that it is 4.3.2!

Since the driver tells me one thing, but the splash screen keeps
telling another, I'm at a loss as to what to trash/de-install, etc.
I can't find a 4.2. Iomega driver extension anywhere on my hard drive!

Repeated attempts to contact Iomega have simply resulted in a robot
response regarding faxing. Nothing on the list matches what I am
experiencing. And I'd like to not have to pay $14.00 for a tech support
call at this point, unless it is ABSOLUTELY necessary. So any help
through this bbd would be most appreciated. Thanks. Dennis Perzanowski.
