Subject: [*] Arnold's MIDI Player 2.8b
Shareware $10 or a nice postcard if you're a poor student.
A.M.P is an application that plays any MIDI file on the Macintosh itself or
on an external synthesizer.
Just drag and drop a MIDI file on its icon or its window and the song is
playing! You can change controllers and programs, build song lists like a
junke-box. Moreover A.M.P. is MIDI Karaoke aware.
A.M.P. needs
- a Mac LC with system 7.0 (or better) and "Macintosh Drag and Drop"
extension (included in system 7.5). System 7.5 or better is recommanded.
- QuickTime 2.x (2.5 recommanded) extensions or Apple MIDI Manager
extensions or OMS extensions or MIDIShare extensions.
You can choose between two kinds of MIDI output:
- QuickTime Music (to play with the Mac internal sound circuit)
- Apple MIDI Manager or Opcode OMS or MIDIShare (to play on real external
MIDI devices on the Modem/Printer port).
(The PPC version is reserved for registered users.)
New in 2.8b
- New user interface
- Several bugs has been fixed in the midi engine.

Calc^3 (pronounced "calc cubed") is a calculator that works in the third
dimension. Thanks to Apple's QuickDraw 3D technology, the calculators
that Calc^3 displays in its windows are fully interactive
three-dimensional objects that you can rotate, zoom into or out of, and
otherwise manipulate in full 3D space. Standard 3DMF (3-dimensional
metafile format) models can also be exported from Calc^3 and then
imported into other QuickDraw 3D-savvy applications. The user can
choose between a simple, flat-shaded calculator, or a fully
texture-mapped version.

Shareware Price: $25
CompRes is a Programmer's tool which allows nearly transparent runtime
resource decompression. This means that you can-for example-compress your
PICT or other large resources at compile time and have them decompressed
at runtime.
This application is a demo which shows you exactly how much disk space you'll
save by compressing your resources. And, although this demo is System 7
dependent, the CompRes runtime decompression is quite robust and works
under System 6 and later (and probably under most of the older system
versions too!).

Subject: [*] CrystalDesigner DR5
This version of CrystalDesigner DR5 contains all the features available in
the commercial version of CrystalDesigner DR5 except the possibility to
import and export data. Yes you can save your own entered data to file
using the internal file format of CrystalDesigner.
CrystalDesigner is a complete tool for building, studying and visualising
all kinds of crystal structure. CrystalDesigner is an ideal tool for both
teaching and scientific studies. The software is intended to be used by
students and teachers at colleges and universities, as well as in
industrial research.
You can enter crystal structure data inside the program or import them from
CIF files. All 230 space groups from the "International Tables for
Crystallography" and more than 700 different atomic, covalent and ionic
radii are built into the program.
The crystal structure can be viewed in four different ways; as unit cells
or multiples of it; as a plane with a user defined thickness; by
coordination around a selected atom within a user defined ratio; or as a
molecule defined by the atom positions. All are done in separate graph
windows.
The atoms in the drawing may alternatively be viewed as points, circles or
spheres. Bonds between atoms can be created and viewed as lines or
cylinders. Groups of atoms can alternatively be viewed as polyhedra.
Distance, angle and torsion angles between atoms can be measured by
selecting different atoms in the drawing.
The program requires System 7 or higher, 2.5 MB available memory, 4 MB free
hard disk space, and a Macintosh with a 68020 CPU or higher. Accelerated
for Power Macintosh.
More information of CrystalDesigner is available through Internet by

Subject: [*] Eyes^3 1.1.1: Three-dimensional eyes
Eyes^3 (pronounced "eyes cubed") is an eyes program that works in the
third dimension. Thanks to Apple's QuickDraw 3D technology, the eyes
that Eyes^3 displays in its windows are real eye balls that rotate in 3D
space. Colors and lighting can be customized. In addition, you can set
the mouse's simulated distance from the eyes. You can also specify a
dominant eye, so that both eyes follow the dominant eye's rotation.
Changes in Version 1.1.1:
- removed an inappropriate AppleEvent error dialog box
- overhauled the internal structure of the program; this makes Cubicle
easier to maintain as a whole, but the only change visible to the user
is a different preferences file format
- an Easter egg that could only be activated in one section can now also
be accessed in two sections of the application ; )
Note on the Eyes^3 Preferences file: Version 1.1.1 has changed the
Eyes^3 Preferences file's format, making it incompatible with
preferences files from previous versions. If, for some reason, you
downgrade to Eyes^3 1.1 or below, delete the Eyes^3 Preferences file in
the Preferences folder of your system folder before running the old
version of Eyes^3 for the first time.

Subject: [*] SimpleDate 1.4: a small, fast, no-frills calendar
SimpleDate is a small, fast calendar application that can be invoked and
dismissed with a minumum of fuss. Its primary feature is the ability to
display multiple calendars for any month from the years 1 to 2500 A.D.
It can display multiple months (one window per month) at a time, and its
month displays can be resized to taste. The current day may be
highlighted in SimpleDate's calendars, and users can choose between
Sunday-first or Monday-first week displays. Complete balloon help is
available.
Changes in Version 1.4:
- fixed a sneaky little bug that occurred whenever the current day was
the 31st and the user jumped to a month with less than 31 days
- standardized all dialog and alert boxes so that they are centered on
the parent window's screen
- refined the Go to... dialog box to monitor the contents of the year
field more intelligently
- corrected some bugs in the documentation/on-line help that still said
that SimpleDate's dates range from 1904 to 2039

Who can mail me ([email protected]) the name of the util?

Subject: [Q] Jazz drive not usable as startup volume
I recently purchased a Jaz drive and like it very much but for the
problems I will elaborate below. Any suggestions will be appreciated.
Turning on the Jaz (external) attached to my Performa 6210 (48 MB, System
7.5.3 English and Japanese Language Kit 1.2), I find that once the system
is up and running I can insert a disk and have it auto mount just fine.
This is the good part. If I put in a cartridge (with the internal IDE as
the startup disk), the system starts up just find, gets to the finder,
draws the desktop, and when it comes time to mount the Jaz, the access
light on the Jaz comes on ... and stays on. Likewise, if I boot with a
viable system on the disk (installed from the 7.5.3 system disk), the
system boots from the Jaz just fine, and then freezes at the same point in
the finder. Any ideas as to why this might be the case?

The checking of data parity is an additional method of assuring that data
are moved to and from a SCSI drive without errors. On my Atari STacy
(lug-able) and 1040 ST, however, SCSI drives won't work at all unless
parity is
*disabled*.
It would seem that, under certain circumstances, this might cause data

Macs and a Mac emulator running on the Ataris, I have encountered no
problems whatsoever.

Subject: AppleScript Problems
Hello to all you Mac Experts,
I would very much like to use AppleScript on my LC III using System 7.1. I
downloaded the Apple Scripting System but unfortunatley there was no help
quide. I have ordered the book, _The Tao of AppleScript_ by Derrick
Schneider. While waiting for the book, I have some questions: When I attempt
to open the Script Editor, I get a dialog box stating "Could not initialize
the application because the dialect is not available". What does this mean?
Since there were no instructions, I put the AppleScript Ext, the AppleScript
Lib and the English Dialect in the extensions folder. Is this wrong?
My second question is: does anybody know where I can find the Apple manuals
about AppleScript? I've searched all their sites to no avail.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

During shutdown the system tells all running applications to quit. If an
application that is told to quit does not, the system will not shut down.
Applications have to be written to expect messages from the system.
Applications don't respond unless their programmers built them that way.
You may have a non-responsive background-only application running. A
background application has no user interface and normally is not listed in
the system application menu. A number of system features these days are
written as background applications. Some extensions do their thing by
means of a background application.
You can get a list of all applications that are running on your machine
with the application About..., which may be found at your local info-mac
mirror:
[107636 Aug 1 1994] cfg/about-103.hqx
You can use this application to monitor what is running and determine who
is responsible for launching it.
Under certain conditions System/Finder can't determine the name of a badly
behaved process, and so getting "unknown" in the message is common.

Simply turning your machine off virtually guarantees corruption of your
disk's directories. The Mac's directory mechanism is sufficiently robust
that it can continue to function without complaint even with some
substantial corruption, but eventually you will pay (and pay and pay).
Whenever you are forced to pull the plug on a Mac, you should run Norton
Utilities' Disk Doctor or equivalent the next time you start up.
Hope this helps.

Recently, someone on the net has reported that this can be caused by
faceless background applications like the simple screensaver "Umbra".
These background apps are treated as extensions by the Finder, live in
the extensions folder, and are launched at startup. But they do not
necessarily contain INIT code like classical extensions. They are
launched into their own application heap and can be recognized by their
type "appe". They don't show up in the application menu, but many
process watchers will show them, for example they can be displayed in
the running applications dock of DragThing 1.6.2

Subject: Desktop Printer problem with HP laser printer
After installing the desktop printer files which came with my
Stylewriter 2500 I cam across the following problem. At startup, the system
created the desktop printer icons correctly for the Apple printers (the
Stylewriter and a networked laser 16/600) but things started to go wrong
with the HP printer (a networked 4MV). Instead of one icon, I got over 100
which flooded the screen out completely. At this point, as the startup
process was completely hung by the creation of these icons, I reset the Mac
and removed the desktop printer files from the extensions folder.
Has anyone alse experienced this "iconmania"? I suspect that the
problem is with the HP print drivers but a search of their web site didn't
reveal any new driver software.
If it is HP that is at fault, I wonder if they will do anything
about it. I am pessimistic as we also have a problem with our Deskwriters
which get zapped by Apple's Laserbridge extension. Result : we cannot
bridge the Deskwriters to our Ethernet network so we can't share them
anymore!

Subject: ftp and mailto helpers for navigator summarized
Thanks to all for the answers to my question: how can I set ftp and =
mailto helper applications for Netscape Navigator! Basically, =
Navigator doesn't support Internet Config, but it has hidden hooks =
for linking to other mail and ftp programs, so that clicking on a =
mailto link launches, for instance Claris Emailer. Several people =
have come up with nifty utilities and applescripts to implement this =
feature. (Maybe Navigator 4 will have this available from =
preferences? Well, we should know in a few months....)
Here are summaries of the responses I received. I only included ones =
that weren't duplicates of each other, and some minor trimming has =
been done.

Bo Bjulen, [email protected]
I have made a collection of applets
which will change Navigator's behaviour so it uses Eudora or E-Mailer
for mail, Anarchie or Fetch for ftp and/or Turbogopher for gopher. You
can chose one or more of these, well, not both mail apps or both ftp
apps of course. There are other scripts on Info-Mac that does the same
thing but I think my collection is the most complete and it also
includes applets to undo this so Netscape will again do the job
itself, which -- as far as I know -- no other available collection
does.
I haven't uploaded it to Info-Mac yet since I'm a bit busy just now
and am still looking into the possibility to include more scripts but
there is a prerelease version of the collection at

Below is a response I gave to a similar question on the Emailer Talk

only -Dan]
>Is there a way for the "Mail to:" links in Navigator to be
>intercepted and sent to EMailer instead of that crappy
>Netscape mail interface?
There are two ways I know how to do this:
1. You can download and run I-C-Netscape, a utility that, according =
to
the author,
"Internet Config is a great utility for all internet users.
Unfortunately, Netscape doesn't support it. Fortunately, Netscape
provides a scripting facitily for setting some of its preference. =
This
program sets Netscape's helpers based on the data from the Internet
Config file-mapping preferences."
I found I-C-Netscape at .
If you decide to use I-C-Netscape, be sure to have Navigator running
before you launch it! I crashed my Mac several times before I thought =
it
was a good idea to read the documentation.
2. You can run this simple script (if you have AppleScript =
installed):
tell application "Netscape Navigator"
register protocol "MMan" for protocol "mailto:"
end tell

Netscape-Emailer Link
Version 1.0
2/21/1996
by Dan Crevier
Introduction
Netscape lets you configure a helper application for email, and =
it works with Emailer. However, it fails to bring Emailer to the =
front, so you have to switch to Emailer manually. This is a hack to =
make Netscape bring Emailer to the front when using Emailer to send =
mail.
Usage
Run the AppleScript "Netscape-Emailer Configure". This should =
make Netscape use "Netscape-Emailer Link" for the mailto application. =
You may only have to run this script once, or you may have to run it =
everytime you run Netscape, different people have different results. =
Note that you can use the script to launch Netscape.
Technical Details
This hack is inspired by the hack included with Internet Config =
1.2 to use Eudora as a mailto helper with Internet Config. =
"Netscape-Emailer Link" is actually an AppleScript applet that was =
given a different creator. To look at the script, change the creator =
to "aplt". Then, change it back to "MMa2".

I have a serious problem with System 7.5.5.. I just installed it and it
attempted to rebuild the desktop and then I got an error TYPE 10 message --

I am on an ethernet network.. could this be the problem? If I click on

Also, i have tried throwing away the desktop, but that just causes it to
crash too.
Any help would be appreciated (via email if possible)

Subject: Icon View gets messed up - A fix
In IM#207, I reported on an occasional problem with the icon view
getting messed up, and I asked for explanations and a fix.
I received a number of comments, mainly from people who had the same
problem. One of them, Alex Morando ([email protected]) offered a fix:
* There is utility called Snapshotter. What it does is to take
* a snapshot of your folder and save it to a file. You can then
* use this file to restore your folder view. However, files added
* after the snapshot was taken will not be affected.
*
*
I've tried it out, and it seems to work like a charm. A more recent
version (10b4) of Snapshotter can be ftp'd directly from the author,
who calls himself Quinn "The Eskimo!" :
ftp://redback.cs.uwa.edu.au/Others/Quinn/Development/
This is the version I used.
With regards to possible reasons for the problem, Alex writes:
* I've had this problem - I think the problem is caused by two events
*
* 1) you (or an application via Apple Events) change the Finder view
* 2) the folder is open when the Mac crashes
*
* The Mac then uses old information (icon spacing) combined
* with the new information (view by Icon) and messes up the folder.
Three cheers to Alex and to Quinn.
About using Snapshotter to fix up the messed-up icon view:
You must first restore the kind of icon you want via the View Menu
(which may make things temporarily look worse). Snapshotter it will
simply restore the memorized grid positions, it will not restore the
kind of icon that was present when you took the snapshot.
I found it most convenient to move the Snapshot file itself directly
into the folder, somewhere in a corner where it is easily found even in
a messed-up view. Simply double-clicking on that file will, after a
short delay, initiate the grid restoration, even with the folder open.
Any items that were added to the folder since the original snapshot was
taken (or anything re-named) will not be moved during the restoration;
they are simply left where SnSh finds them. Nor will SnSh attempt to
restore any items that have since than been deleted.

Subject: Mac defaults to different keyboard
Hi,
At least I solved my Netscape freeze problem: my mac simply refused to boot
up one day so I had to make a clean re-install. Since then it's paradise,
netscape wise. BUT (always a dark cloud above every silver lining)
I have A Power Mac with a French keyboard (as in French Canadian). When I
first rebooted after the install, I noticed a few keys were no longer where
I expected them to be: turns out my machine had decided that I should be
using the "Canada- CSA" keyboard resource. Fine, but I prefer "Canada-ISO".
So I switched. And then, when I rebooted, my mac was back to "Canada-CSA".
In fact _each_ time I reboot, I have to change the Keyboard ressource to
Canada-ISO. It doesn't matter whether I do it from the menu bar or the
control panel, my mac insists on having it its way on booting. It's driving
me crazy.

Subject: moz3_0.zip?
I'm curious whether any Info-Mac Digest readers know the significance of thi=
s:
In my Netscape Navigator 3.0 (final version) preferences folder, there is a
file named moz3_0.zip, 961K in size (Preferences/Netscape
=9F/Java/Lib/moz3_0.zip). It's obviously a compressed file, and it unzips t=
o
about 11 MB of what appears to be Java data, both for Mac and Win.
I'm not sure why this file is there, or whether it needs to be. I think
it's unlikely that Netscape is utilizing this file in zipped form, and the
unzipped folder doesn't exist anywhere on my system unless I do it
manually. Netscape seems to run fine if I remove it.
I suspect this is something that one of the Netscape beta installers placed
there that was inadvertently left behind by the final 3.0 installation.
Can anyone confirm this? Or is this thing actually useful? If not, I'll
trash it and take the extra MB of disk space. Others might also find this
item wasting space on their drives.
Thanks in advance,

When I originally purchased my Performa 6210 last year, it came with
KanjiTalk. Due to the instability of the system I upgraded the system
to 7.5.3 English plus Japanese Language Kit 1.2. Now all is well as far
as stability goes but the multiple scan display that came with our
computer has fewer modes than under Kanjitalk. This is important as the
built in TV tuner (Apple T.V.) only works with some modes and not
others. The two modes that presently exist are 640 x 480 67Hz
832 x 624 75 Hz. The Apple T.V. only works with the 640 x 480 mode and
not the larger display mode (as it used to under KanjiTalk). Any
suggestions as to how to recover the additional video modes?

I recently posted about Netscape 3.0 freezing my system. Well, after one
week of flawless surfing, I cam to my office this morning and launched
Netscape 3.0 as usual. Only this time it froze my Mac... again. Oh no.
Reboot, re-launch Netscape. Freeze. Aarghh! But it was working perfectly
well only 2 days ago! I was going to do something radical like dowload
Netscape 2.0x (having finally trashed my copy when 3.0 had been so well
behaved for a week), whn it occured to me that I had kicked in my Virtual
Memory Friday before I left for home. So, I booted once again, disabled VM,
rebooted and tried Netscape 3.0. Et voila. It seems that, on my computer at
least, Netscape 3.0 is allergic to VM, even though its info tells me it
would require less RAM if it was working under VM. Go figure. Is there a
way out of this? I really liked have having 48 megs to play with even

Subject: Quadra 650 and System Problems
Ciao everybody and thanks for putting so much wonderful stuff on Info-mac.
Many of my questions have be answered by your input and I really appreciate
it. I live on the small island of LaMaddalena-just off the coast of
Sardenga and 124 miles from the Italian mainland. I've been gone from the
USA for over two years and have been on the net since May, so I'm a
novice. Please bare with me if these questions have already been answered.
I have a Quadra 650 with 16 M Ram.
I have a few problems or questions? I ran a check on my system and found
that I had a corrupted directory structure. Finally figured out how to fix
it. However, when I got Additional Software Info, I found that my "default
System Heap size:" was 128Kb and the System Heap ws 879 Kb (94% full).
First of all, I don't have a clue what a System Heap is or what it does,
but if it is 94% full, it sounds as if I should worry. Can anyone tell me
what it is, what it does and SHOULD I WORRY?
Also, I am beginning to understand the comments about MicroSoft. I upgraded
my Version 5.0 to Version 6.0.1a. It appears to be a good program BUT it
automatically upgraded every Word file and every program that uses Word,
such as my MacinTax, Print Shop Deluxe and files within my system folder -
ATM Font Database; control panels, Extensions etc. So under System Software
info - Boot Volume Statistics, I have a huge list of of files that say I
have a "Creation date later than the Last Modified date". I have reset the
the alarm clock but that didn't change a thing. I think that I can bring up
each file, make a change and that would solve the problem, but I have 2833
files on my hard drive. Is there another way?
And, my last foolish question, how can you tell which extensions and
preferences you can safely trash when you don't know what they are?
Thanks for your help!

Subject: Saving audio cd tracks to disk?
A couple of days ago I created some new startup sounds, using a favorite
audio CD as my source. I used a QuickTime utility named MoviePlayer to
open one of the CD tracks. It goes thru a Convert step, saving the
entire track to my hard disk. A 7 min track ended up as a 9 MB file, if
I remember right. I don't know what the Convert step did, exactly, but
it didn't seem to affect the sound quality. I could then open the hard
disk file, create a new MoviePlayer document, and copy and paste
a sound selection to the new file. The final step was to Save As a
System 7 sound file in my Startup Items folder.
MoviePlayer is a widely available shareware program which worked very
well for this purpose.

Calc^3 (pronounced "calc cubed") is a calculator that works in the third

that Calc^3 displays in its windows are fully interactive
three-dimensional objects that you can rotate, zoom into or out of, and
otherwise manipulate in full 3D space. Standard 3DMF (3-dimensional

imported into other QuickDraw 3D-savvy applications. The user can
choose between a simple, flat-shaded calculator, or a fully
texture-mapped version.

CompRes is a Programmer's tool which allows nearly transparent runtime
resource decompression. This means that you can-for example-compress your

I recently purchased a Jaz drive and like it very much but for the

Turning on the Jaz (external) attached to my Performa 6210 (48 MB, System

is up and running I can insert a disk and have it auto mount just fine.

(lug-able) and 1040 ST, however, SCSI drives won't work at all unless
parity is
*disabled*.
It would seem that, under certain circumstances, this might cause data

problems whatsoever.

Result : we cannot
bridge the Deskwriters to our Ethernet network so we can't share them
anymore!

which will change Navigator's behaviour so it uses Eudora or E-Mailer
for mail, Anarchie or Fetch for ftp and/or Turbogopher for gopher. You
can chose one or more of these, well, not both mail apps or both ftp
apps of course. There are other scripts on Info-Mac that does the same
thing but I think my collection is the most complete and it also
includes applets to undo this so Netscape will again do the job
itself, which -- as far as I know -- no other available collection

There are two ways I know how to do this:
1. You can download and run I-C-Netscape, a utility that, according =
to

"Internet Config is a great utility for all internet users.

Subject: Help! Sys 7.5.5 Bombs!!
Hi!
I have a serious problem with System 7.5.5.. I just installed it and it
attempted to rebuild the desktop and then I got an error TYPE 10 message --
bus error and the system froze up.
I am on an ethernet network.. could this be the problem? If I click on
cancel when rebuilding the desktop it doesn't crash.
Also, i have tried throwing away the desktop, but that just causes it to
crash too.
Any help would be appreciated (via email if possible)
Thanks a lot

Any items that were added to the folder since the original snapshot was
taken (or anything re-named) will not be moved during the restoration;
they are simply left where SnSh finds them.

Subject: Multiple Scan display

Subject: Netscape 3.0 and virtual memory
Hi,
I recently posted about Netscape 3.0 freezing my system.
I really liked have having 48 megs to play with even
though only half was real memory.

Subject: possibility thinker's creed speech osax
Years ago I had the gala tea voices Ralph (sounds like Scrooge) and
Princess ("when I grow up I want to be a scientist") argue with each other
in an applescript of Mark Twain's "What is Man". Ralph argues that man
deserves no credit for anything (the ultimate grinch in Claude Steiner's
stroke economy), "One does not thank an automobile engine" and all the
Princess wants is a positive stroke.
I thought my old negative thinking Ralph should recite the Possibility
Thinker's Creed, it would be good for him.
In im digest 158 I submitted a speech osax, now in im digest 209 my
stand alone applescript applet finally appeared, so I remind you of the
osax.
I remind you all of access to the osax
http://hyperarchive.lcs.mit.edu/HyperAr ... ech-as.hqx
You would replace ...Archive/ with info-mac/ on mirrors.
I remind you all of the creed mirror location as well which can be used
as as startup application if you put the osax in the applescript
extensions.

For years I have used this utility with Mac 7.1 rather than Norton Utilities.
I am aware that Norton has bought this company and has integrated some of the
features of Public Utilities into Norton Utilities. I have very recently
moved to a Power Mac 7200/120mz machine with System 7.5.3.
My Question is: Is Public Utilities compatible with the new system config-
uration? I have loaded my new Mac down with several hundred MB of data and
do not want to do something dumb, resulting in having to do a full reload.
I thought Public Utilities was a wonderful product and much prefered it to
Norton Utilities. Please send any replies directly to me.
