Subject: [*] CommuniGate Client 2.2

The CommuniGator application is the client part of the CommuniGate integrated
messaging system. It allows you to work with all your messages: e-mail, fax,
voice, pager, etc.

You can use it on the same computer the CommuniGate server is installed on,
and you can install and use it on other computers connected to the server via
network.

The CommuniGate User Manual explains how you can use the CommuniGator
application as your messaging environment. It provides information about:
- message composing;
- address books;
- mailboxes;
- operations on messages;
- miscellaneous CommuniGator features;

CommuniGator is used to manage the CommuniGate Server, too: to configure the
server itself or the modules it runs, to control the modules and their queues,
etc. The CommuniGate System Manual explains how you can use the CommuniGator
application to maintain your CommuniGate Server.

See the CommuniGate System Guide for installation instructions.

Subject: [*] CommuniGate FaxGate 1.9.3

The FaxGate is a CommuniGate communication module supporting fax messaging.
It converts messages to the fax format and sends them to remote fax machines
The module can receive incoming faxes and route them as messages to the
recipient(s).

The module is multi-line, i.e. it can support several fax lines
simultaneously.

When installed together with the Voice Gate, FaxGate can route incoming
faxes to any recipient (locally or over e-mail), it can implement
fax-on-demand and other fax-center features.

The FaxGate supports Class 2 and Class 2.0 fax modems connected via serial
ports. Make sure that your modem really supports Class 2 or Class 2.0
faxing before you try it with FaxGate. Many old fax modms support fax
Class 1 only.

To compose and send messages as faxes, you can use not only the
CommuniGator application, but also the print driver "FaxSender".

The latest version can be obtained at:
http://www.stalker.com
or
ftp://ftp.stalker.com

Changes since the last upload:
1.9.3
* Attached Server Documents (of the Fax type only) are supported now.
* Improved Receiving in the Software Handshaking mode for some types of
buggy modems.
* CoverPage/Header drawing on old machines (MacSE) is fixed.

Subject: [*] CommuniGate FaxSender 2.2 print driver

FaxSender is a print (Chooser) driver to use with the CommuniGate System.
It employs the same Address Books panel as the CommuniGator application, and
it can be used with any application that supports printing. When "FaxSender"
is selected in the Chooser, using the Print command in any application results
in "printing" of the open document on a remote fax machine.

In order to avoid switching between your regular printer driver and FaxSender,
you may want to install the "FaxSwitcher" extension.

To install the fax print driver, drag the the FaxSender and the FaxSwitcher
icons and drop them on the System Folder icon. Finder will route them to
the Extensions folder.

The FaxSender works on behalf of the application, so it keeps the server
session open (avoiding a need to reconnect) till the application quits.
Since this new version of the FaxSender employs AppleEvents, the
application you use to send faxes should support AppleEvents (most modern
applications support AppleEvents).

In case your application does not support AppleEvents, please use the
FaxSender drivers in the Old Drivers folder, and notify Stalker about the
problem: the server "back door" used with the old drivers will be closed
soon, so the old drivers will continue to work for few months only.

The latest version of the FaxSender can be found at:
http://www.stalker.com
or
ftp://ftp.stalker.com

Changes since last upload:

2.2
* The FaxSender uses the "front door", i.e. the AppleEvents-based interface
to the CommuniGate Server now. Old drivers used the PPC-based "back door",
which will be removed soon. This resulted in:
* Server-based address books can be modified from the FaxSender now.
* User settings (user name, etc) from the CommuniGate Server are used now.
* More stable work on old low-end machines.

Subject: [*] CommuniGate PagerGate 1.3

The PagerGate is a CommuniGate communication module supporting wireless
paging. The module uses one or several regular modems. It calls host
computers of paging service companies and transfers the messages along with
the recipients' pager IDs. The host computers then deliver the messages to
the recipients' pagers.
As any other CommuniGate module, PagerGate can be used even if you don't
have it installed on your computer or network: you can use any other
CommuniGate Server with PagerGate via Internet (see below).

Since there are many companies providing paging service, and each company uses
its own pager IDs, you need to know two things in order to send a message to
somebody's pager: the ID of that pager, and also the name of the paging
service provider.

The PagerGate module supports the TAP protocol (used by US paging services),
it is multi-line, and it supports connections with several paging hosts.

When you configure the PagerGate module, you create entities ("lines") for
each service company you want to be able to use for paging. When done, you
address a pager as
dddd@nnnn,
where dddd is the ID of the pager, nnnn is the name of the paging company.
Sample: 777777@PageMart

Changes since last upload:

1.3
* The port characteristics can be explicitly specified for each communication
link now. The default port speed is now set to 1200 (it was 9600 before),
so you should have much less trouble configuring your modems for paging
(actually, it should allow all modems to use the default settings). For
some paging hosts (outside of US) the 8 bit data format can be selected.
* The %x symbols from the Host Message format strings are $x strings now, as
those used in Reply headers and Reaction letters (see the Working with
Messages chapter of the CommuniGate System Guide). The '%' symbols will
continue to work for some time, but note that 'F', 'T' and 't' symbols have
slightly different meanings now.
* Multi-part message bodies are processed now (before, only the first text
portion of a message body was used).
* Messages with attachments are not rejected, attachments are simply ignored.
* Several Log enchancements were done.

Subject: [*] Double

"Double" was inspired by the old Chinese game called "Mah-jongg". Its
purpose is to be educational, Intellectually stimulating and fun for the
whole family.

The complete version of "Double" offers 21 board designs (tile configurations),
14 standard themes such as: mathematics (addition, subtraction, multiplication,
division) and Visual assimilation (Shapes, colors). Moreover, and this is one
of the important advantages of Double, you can easily create new themes for
Double and can exchange them with other players.

The demonstration version of Double permits you to play and complete only one
theme with only one tile configuration. The other themes and tile
configurations can all be used but the player is limited to only ten moves in
each case. It is the only imposed limit. All other possibilities and options
of the game may be explored at will.

Please let us know if you are interested in reviewing the DOUBLE software and

Subject: [*] Font-o-rama! 1.3.0

Font-o-rama! dramatically simplifies font selection. If you spend any
time at all scrolling through font menus, testing different font styles,
or trying to get just the right font size, then Font-o-rama! will save
you time.

It's a dialog box with a huge multi-column list area that's big enough
to display all your fonts at once. So you don't have to scroll through
a long font menu looking for "Garamond Ultra Italic." You just click
on it. Or type "Ga" to go directly to it.

Font-o-rama! works in common applications like PageMaker, QuarkXPress,
or Microsoft Word.

Changes in 1.2 include the addition of a short description of each
font, fonts automatically grouped by family, fonts optionally displayed
in their own typeface, and much faster display times.

Changes in 1.3 include printing catalogs of fonts.

Requires: System 7.1

Moderators: Font-o-rama! may be included on the commercially available
CD-ROM of the archives.

Subject: [*] Internet ToolKit for 4D (ITK) v1.1 update/demo

Here is version 1.1 of Internet ToolKit for 4D (best known as ITK) which
is now available for both Mac and Windows (95 and NT).

As usual, updated documentation can be found on ITK's Web server.

For general information about Internet ToolKit check ITK's homepage at:
http://www.jca.fr/jca/itk/

You can also have a look at some demonstrations made with ITK at:
http://www.jca.fr/jca/itk/demo/

What is Internet ToolKit for 4D ?
ITK is an 4D external package that provides full TCP and UDP support
directly inside 4D's language plus a lot of other useful routines to
encode/decode data into Internet standards (HTML, ISO, URL, etc)...

What can you do with Internet ToolKit ?
In a few words, any kind of internet client or server application (email,
ftp, www, dns, gopher, news, etc) because ITK offers a low level access to
TCP/IP and UDP. ITK transforms 4D into real server, not just a CGI.

What are the main features of Internet ToolKit ?

ITK gives the developpers easy access to the following:
- access to low-level TCP/IP and UDP using MacTCP,
- access to DNS (name to IP and IP to name),
- control the state of MacPPP (to open or close PPP connection),
- access to Internet Config preferences (get or set preferences),
- utility features to convert text to or from HTML encoding, MacBinary,
BinHex, URL encoding and ISO 8859-1 encoding, RFC date conversion,
- picture related routines to convert and send pictures (JPEG and GIF),
- some goodies like StopWatch routines and inter process communication
(message FIFO),
- ready-to-use examples for SMTP, POP3, HTTP, FTP...

ITK is a commercial product distributed by JCA Telematique directly through
the Internet. For North America, ITK is distributed by Foresight Inc
(http://www.fsti.com) and in Switzerland by AJAR AG (http://www.ajar.ch).

This version of ITK will automatically run in demo mode if you do not
provide ITK a valid licence number. To get your ITK licence number, use
ITK's order form available at:

Subject: [*] Jon's Commands 1.7.2

Here's an incremental update to Jon's Commands, a collection of AppleScript
commands called scripting additions or "osaxen". Placing Jon's Commands in
your Scripting Additions folder adds these commands to AppleScript's
vocabulary.

This update fixes an ordering problem in the "walk folders" command so that
it processes a folder after it processes all the files in the folder (it
used to do the folder first). This allows you to delete folders
recursively, which wasn't possible previously.

This update also adds the ability to delete a folder with items in it with
the "deleteFile" command thus removing the need to use "walk folders" to
delete things. :)

Jon's Commands is free for noncommercial use and only $25 for a commercial
licence.

Subject: [*] Spell Tutor v. 1.1

Spell Tutor is an easy to use and fun program for creating, practicing,
storing and printing lists of spelling words. The student hears the word as
recorded on the Mac by the teacher or the student and then must spell the
word using correct case. When finished, the student sees his score and can
opt to retake the whole test or just the missed words. The teacher, parent, or
student enters a spelling list of up to 30 words of up to 16 letters each.
The pronunciation of the word is entered at the same time using a Macintosh
sound input device. (i.e. the plaintalk mic which comes with most Macs)
Previously entered words can be easily edited. The list is stored and can be
printed.
The student then chooses the test to be taken. Pressing a button (or the TAB
key) speaks the word. The student enters his answer. (Answer must use correct
case). The word then appears in the correct or missed list. When finished
with the list, the student will see his score and the list of words missed.
The students has the option of repeating the whole list, repeating just the
words missed, or going on to another list.
Program includes colorful graphics. Requires a Mac sound input device. Online
help is available by choosing 'Help' from the Apple Menu after launching the
program. The registered version includes a manual. Shareware $7. Site License
$50. Registration documents included with the program.

touchMe is an application program to change the creation and/or
modification date time stamp of any Macintosh files or folders.
It is like Unix command "touch".

To run the program, it requires System 7.1 or later. Under System
7.5, touchMe is also AppleScriptable and allows to accept drag &
drop operations. The program is written under the Metrowerks C++
application framework of PowerPlant. And, the package includes
its source codes.

Changes since 1.1, August 1, 1996
- New. During a drag & drop operation with option-key pressed,
the command "touch" and "fetch" are exchanged temporarily.
- New. Four date time fields are sensitive to accept items separately.
- New. It remembers the last window position on quit by "Cancel".
- Bug. A well-known (but, I didn't know:-) MacOS bug on using
colored alert boxes is fixed.
- New. Enabled the "Close Box" in the window title that works as
"Cancel" button, and the help menu item of the desktop menu bar.
- New. Added some practical AppleScript samples.
- Bug. Corrected a typo, a wrong file name for "touchMe Prefs".;-)

touchMe is a freeware.
You can distribute it without any limitations nor permissions.

Subject: [*] Zippier Zip 4.3 Rev 2

Price: Freeware
Source: ftp://ftp.alpcom.it/software/mac/LMontalcini

Zippier Zip is a free patcher that allows you to modify the
original Iomega Driver 4.3 and Iomega Guest 1.1 software for
the Macintosh, which ships with all Zip drives.

- The patched Iomega Driver no longer complains when you start
up with your Zip drive turned off, and more generally when no
Iomega drive is found at startup. The driver is still not
loaded, but you won't get the annoying error message at the end
of the startup process.

- The patched Iomega Guest application no longer displays a
message when the driver is successfully loaded, so you don't
have to click OK or type Enter every time you load the driver
after startup.

New in Rev 2:
- Also disables startup messages issued when the Iomega driver
is loaded directly from a Zip disk before the Iomega Driver
extension loads. This typically occurs after a crash, or if
you insert a Zip disk immediately after the Mac is restarted
or switched on.

Subject: Corrupt Finder Menu

If I touch the Apple on the menu bar, it gets selected but the menu
doesn't drop, the Mac simply freezes. If I touch the Finder menu bar, the
Apple becomes the letters TMTM and the menu bar ceases to function. Trash
the System and Finder files and re-install, but the problem remains and
the System Update installer crashes. Disinfectant 3.6 reports no viruses
but a damaged resource fork in the System file. This is with System 7.5.3
on a 6100/60, 72 Mb RAM.

I think this started when I put some new fonts into the Fonts folder.

I was able to boot from an external hard drive, re-format the internal HD
and restore completely from that morning's Retrospect backup, so nothing
was lost. But has anyone had any similar experiences with a system so
corrupt you can't re-install, and an Apple that turns into TMTM?

Subject: Help with Internet hookup

I have had AOL, and then a "regular" ppp account for the last few years.
I know how to usse all the tools of the net as an end user. I have a web
page, etc. However, I am a school teacher who is considered the computer
expert at our school. I know nothing aboput what out principal wants me
to do. Below is a note I sent to a few mac usenet news groups and have
not had any responses. If you cannot help directly, do you know of where
I should turn.
Allan Rube
[email protected]

Our school has a Macintosh Lab with 17 LCIIIs hooked to a Quadra 800
which acts as a file server. There are 18 LCIIIs in classrooms wired to a
Quadra 650 in the library which links these computers into the Quadra in
the lab. We would now like to go outside the school.
What we are looking for is a dedicated internet connection so that
teachers could turn on the LCs in the morning, starting up with Netscape.
Students could access the Web from any computer.
We would also like email and the ability for teachers with modems at home
to be able to dial into school to access their files on the Quadra. Some
teachers have their own internet accounts, but others would just want to
dial into the school - thus, a second line.
We have ethernet connections and run Appleshare 3. LCs have system 7.1
with 12 meg of RAM.

Can someone help us? If you are at a school that has gone through this
process and can offer advice, please let me know.
If you have advice on modems, type of phone line (is a 28.8 connection
very good if 23 machines are trying to use it at the same time)?, ideas
on whether on non Power PC is fast enough, connect me please.

We are located in southern New Hampshire. If you know of a school using
Macs that has this type of connection in our area and would allow a few
of us to visit - same thing.

Subject: New Iomega driver 4.3.2

Iomega has recently released a new driver software version 4.3.2 for their
drives. One conflict that I have found was with the APT Extension version
4.0.4 that comes with some APS hard drives. The conflict occurs if the APT
Extension is mounting the Iomega drive before the Iomega extension is
loaded. After your system boots you will get an error message noting that
the Iomega Extension did not load because another extension was already
controlling the Iomega drive.

The first of two cures that I found was to be sure that the Iomega
entension loaded before the APT extension. The second, and in my case the
preferable cure, boot the APS Mounter application. Select the Iomega drive,
select INFORMATION under the FILE menu and be sure to de-select the SCAN AT
STARTUP checkbox if it is already checked.

One way to check if the correct extension is loaded and controlling the
Iomega drive is to boot the new Tools application located in the Iomega
Tools Folder 4.3.2 which was created when you installed the new 4.3.2.
When the application is started it will only run if the correct extension
has loaded properly and will alert you.

I hope this info helps if you run into the problem after installing the new
Iomega software.
