Aaron 1.5 (August 7, 1996) by Greg Landweber and Edward Voas
(c) 1996 Greg Landweber and Amargosa Software, Inc.
>From the authors of Greg's Buttons, Greg's Browser, and DoubleScroll.
Why wait for eight? Your Mac can have the Mac OS 8 user experience today!
Just drop Aaron into your Extensions folder, and your Mac will look just
like the Mac OS 8 Default Theme (Aaron is based on Apple's official Mac
OS 8 interface specs). Aaron gives you 3D Mac OS 8-style windows, scroll
bars, buttons, folder icons, menus, fonts, pop-ups, progress boxes, Finder
window headers, and more. Aaron is a fat binary for Macs and PowerMacs.
Version 1.5 adds 3D menu dividers, improved Finder headers, and other
interface tweaks. It also fixes the Speed Doubler 1.3 trash window conflict.

Subject: [*] BOL PROCESSOR BP2 - July 1996 release
BP2 is a Macintosh software for music using the MIDI environment.
"BP2doc.sea.hqx" contains a 100-page manual "BP2 doc - MS Word" in
Microsoft Word (version 5). It is recommended to print at least the
"QuickStart" part.
"ReadAndHearMe.sea.hqx" contains a "ReadAndHearMe" document with a sound
example. More sound examples will soon be available on the Web following
a publication in the JIM96 conference. (Information on
http://www.ircam.fr/jim96)
"BP2client.sea.hqx" contains a FileMaker Pro client application for BP2,
actually the simplest introduction to BP2. The next step for beginners
is a guided visit following the "QuickStart" manual in the first half of
"BP2 doc - MS Word".
BP2.6.1 is documented on-line: type 'command question mark' and click
any button, menu item or word.
BP2.6.1 runs under MacOS version 7.1 or greater. (It is currently
developed and checked under 7.5.3) It requires a 68020, 68030, 68040 or
PowerPC processor, no arithmetic processor. PowerPC optimized version
will soon be made available to registered users.
BP2.6.1 is sized to 4.5 Mbytes of RAM, but it may be resized down to 1.5
Mbytes if necessary. It works fine with RAM Doubler.
BP2 package is shareware and may be freely distributed provided that no
alteration has been made to the software, examples and documents.
Registration details may be found in the beginning of "BP2 doc - MS
Word". CD-ROM publishers should get in touch with the author to make
sure that they own the most recent version.

Subject: [*] CHN4
This is a new version of a Elemental analysis tool I created for
organic and analytical chemists. It requires FIleMaker Pro 3.0.
Apparently there was an error in version 3 of my CHN program. Luckily I
was able to fix it fairly quick. To make it worth everyone's while, I
completely rewrote it. Now you can enter the Molecular formula in one
box and have the Elemental analysis computed. It has alot of other new
features for adjusting the amount of an impurity in a compound's
Elemental analysis, including the ability to set a reange of impurity
values. Great for compound's that contain a trace of water or other
solvents. It has a standard list of common solvents and includes a
reaction calculator, that will determine quantities of reagents based
on density, equivalents, molarities, etc. It was created by myself and
is shareware.

Decider is a Creative Writing Aid based on an Idea in Keith Johnstone's
groovy book "Impro". Basically, you build a story by asking simple
questions that can be answered with a "yes" or "no". Decider will make
choices for you based on your questions. You can either use Keith's
method, which only really works if you don't know the specifics, or by
purely random answers to your questions. The trick is to be as
outlandish with your imagination as possible!
As soon as you type the question mark to your sentence, Decider will
answer your question. You can save your stories as TEXT files.
Decider is Shareware. Full Registration info is available in the read me

Subject: [*] HTMLfix
>>> HTMLfix
... is a set of utilities for making changes in text and hypertext
files.
>>> Why?
A few months back, the team I am working with sat down to write a
detailed presentation of our Centre. This resulted in about 25
files in hypertext, plus images and sounds.
running our host Web site 5000 miles away complained that names of
files wouldn't fit his system. Both names and extensions needed to
be changed.
Pentium, gasp! -- had bombed while attempting to open a few of our
files.
>>> What to do?
It is not difficult to change file names on a Mac. But then, what
will happen to hyperlinks?
I found out that the HTML files causing bombs were those containing
illicit characters. It does happen when carelessly pasting text
into HTML source files.
I also dreamed of a utility fixing these bugs and doing a complete
check of local hyperlinks: list the ones that connect nowhere, and
conversely list 'orphan' files that can't be reached from the home
page.
Checking remote hyperlinks would also be great, but it requires
TCP/IP features I can't implement. So, the utility should at least
generate a list of them for manual check.
The program should of course save files in Mac, DOS and Unix
formats, the difference being with the control character(s)
separating lines.

Folks,
Once again TONTATA has revised his masterpiece midi sequencer with
some bug fixes and improvements.
Be advised also that Opcode has released OMS 2.2 in two versions
(full and mini) and that there are a few behavioral problems between OMS
2.2 and Quicktime 2.5 to be ironed out. Since OMS 2.2 is intended to
replace Midi Manager and work with Quicktime 2.5, users of MIDIgraphy may
want to visit Opcode's ftp site for mac software at

OMS right away. Expect an update in the near future.
Be advised that this unusual ftp directory url may produce fits in
Netscape 2.0.2. Internet Explorer 2.0.1 had no problems. I assume that
FETCH will have no problems. But it is unusual to see a double forward
slash following the main net address name (...com//pub....).

Subject: [*] SurfSim 1.0 (68K)
SurfSim plays the relaxing sound of the surf over your
Mac's speakers. It's designed to run in the background,
creating a pleasant aural backdrop while you use other
applications. If you have a Power Macintosh, you should
instead download the native version ("SurfSim PPC"),
because it includes additional features.
Unlike other natural sound players, SurfSim creates the
audio from scratch. This method has a number of advantages:
- The sound never repeats- you won't hear the same wave twice.
- You can adjust the tempo and timbre of the surf.
- The application has a very small RAM footprint.
SurfSim is shareware. If you use it for more than thirty
days, you must register by paying the $10 fee. Registered
users will receive a postcard with an ID and password
which can be used to remove the shareware notices.
This version of SurfSim requires a Macintosh with 68020+ CPU,
System 7.0+, and Sound Manager 3.0+.

Subject: [*] SurfSim 1.0 (PPC)
SurfSim plays the relaxing sound of the surf over your
Mac's speakers. It's designed to run in the background,
creating a pleasant aural backdrop while you use other
applications. This version features optional active
panning stereo waves (headphones only) for added realism.
If you have a 68K Macintosh, you must instead download
the non-native version, "SurfSim 68K."
This version of SurfSim requires a Power Macintosh,
System 7.0+, and Sound Manager 3.0+.
Shareware, $10 (US)

You can reclaim the space by rebuilding the desktop (by holding down
option-command when mounting the disk).
...surely you knew all that but there is one "feature" (at least with
System 7.0.1) you must remember when dealing with floppies: there must be
_something_ on the floppy when rebuilding; an empty folder is OK. ...a
slower but fool-proof method is to reformat the floppy.

Subject: Automatic FTP-transfer
Monday 16 September -96
Dear Mac-friends,
In daily life I'm transferring files via Internet from my precious Mac to a
SUN. This implies a lot of steps such as starting up the FTP program,
navigating to the dump folder on the SUN, navigating back to the source
folder, click on the file to be transferred and so on...
Ideally, I would like to drag the file on the Mac to an icon and then the
FTP transfer is made automatically to a predetermined folder on the SUN.
Would this be possible with e.g. Anarchie or Fetch ???
I guess another alternative would be to write a script for this but,
unfortunately, I have'nt the faintest idea how to do this so...
Thanks

Help! Since installing System 7.5.3 on my Performa 6200 last month I'm having
problems shutting down. Roughly 50% of the time I try to perform a shut down
I get a message to the effect that the Mac is unable to shut down because the
application "unknown" is still running. So I do the keyboard restart sequence,
wait for the computer to boot and THEN shut down. I've kept track of opened
applications between occurances and not been able to find the culprit. So I
have
two questions:
1) Has anyone seen this problem and/or know how to fix it?
2) Is there a keyboard sequence or a switch anywhere a 6200CD that will
simply turn the thing OFF regardless of whether it thinks there's an
application
running?

Dear Digest reader,
I found Unmuteit, which at least changes the sound control panel to not
be mute during startup. However, that still doesn't resolve the problem that
Apple's CD Audio Player will load at half volume when it is first openned.
Is there any way to make it load at full volume when it is first openned?
I have QuickTime 2.5 which also allows me to auto start the playing of the
Audio CD when loaded. Still I have to go to the CD Audio player program to
turn up the volume. Is there any way to avoid this extra step? A program
that I can load at startup or something of the like?
Thank you.

What is the code to add items to the submenu "Formats"?
Also how do I write the call to the Solver subroutine? The format is

Subject: Hey - we're wide open on two fronts! SOMEBODY DO SOMETHING!
Mac advocates, this a WARNING call to battle (we'd better hit the think
tanks, folks - we're in MAJOR trouble)! I've recently noticed a couple of
disturbing anti-Mac trends I'd like to call to everyone's attention in
hopes that someone will recognize the threats and create/enact the
necessary soloutions:
1) At least one of the home shopping channels (CV-something) is HEAVILY
marketing clone PeeC's, touting them as embodying THE system (to which all
others are inferior, by implication). Obviously it would be tremendously
counter-productive to take a hostile course of action on this - I'd just
like to see Macs or Mac-clone packages for sale on one of these channels
as well at competitive prices (since they're hocking these windoze
machines for dirt - that's half of their pitch). This is a HIGH-volume
means of advertising we can't afford to ignore - we MUST get some kind of
representation in this media quick, or we'll all be drowning in Windoze
zombies in a VERY short time...
2) A lot of the "one stop" business stores (i.e. Staples, Office Depot,
etc) are offering numerous PeeC's for sale in their computer sections (and
newspaper fliers) and ONE token Macintosh - usually the MOST EXPENSIVE
high-end puppy from Apple. WHY isn't Apple offering these chains any of
their cheaper (home user) Performas?! WHERE are the clones? Many of the
Power Computing ones have as much/more firepower for less money than even
the low-end iBM's run for. This is only helping the Windoze zombies shovel
their propaganda and "illustrate" the notion that Macs are over-priced (in
addition to the other myths)...
While I certainly don't mind if responding parties post their answers (in
hopes that someone else could benefit from the information as well), if
you answer this, please send me an E-Mail of your response. I don't get to
check usenet nearly as often as I'd like, and I don't want to miss what
might be "the" answer I'm looking for.
Thank you very much for your time!

If MCF catches on then it could be used to present information in a
number of different ways. The important things is that it helps to
define how documents are related to each other. At the moment there
are not enough tools that use MCF, but you should follow it's progress
as it is a potentially very useful addition to the web designers toolbox.
Konnichiwa there,
Why do we need another language like MCF to represent structures?
HTML, as it stands now, does not support EMBED tag. In my opinion,
the support of this tag should come first. It's easy and intuitive.
Using MCF, on the other hand, would make common folks' lives very
difficult. If the functionality of database is what's needed, then
use a database program either through cgi or some other experimental
hypermedia servers. If hypertext 'structure' is what's needed, then
EMBED tag with its full potential is all we need. Really.
Please note that this is just my opinion; I could be wrong.

There's a program called Disc-to-Disk, by MicroTest, which lets you copy=
