Subject: [!] Info-mac listserv is changing
Hi all,
After many long years of service, Info-Mac's main listserv, RICEVM1, is going
away! There are 8 or 9 thousand of you on this listserv. We must change!
Progress. We all know that the Mac is the best computer in the world. So,
we are going to run this list from a Mac. StarNine ()
has graciously stepped forward to help us out. The two people responsible for
the support from StarNINE are Josh Baer and Steve Friesen. Welcome!
The transition is much the same as it is for Adam's Tidbits list (but he has
about 30,000 people, we have only about 9000 on our primary listserv). We will
be using StarNine's ListStar software to power the list. As we learn our way
around ListStar we hope to be able to provide a more flexable digest service to
you.
So -- what does this mean to you? Well. Here is how it will work. Sometime
this weekend you will get a small test message (most likely sunday). This
message will be very short and mostly a way for us to test out the setup with
out mailing out a 50K long email. Then, on Monday, the 6th, we will freeze
subscriptions to the listserv, transfer the full list to liststar, and send out
another small message. This message will contain instructions on how to
subscribe, unsubscribe, how to get more info, etc. (you can always look at our
home page which will contain the info).
Sorry for the extra mail, however we feel that by generating a small amout of
extra mail now, we can avoid some real distribution screw-ups after the
change.
I would like to thank Mark Williams, the list manager for the ricevm system.
Through these years he has kept this list running with very little asked in
return. Fantastic job!
Cheers,
Gordon.

battalion 1.4b1
(c) 1994-1996 Andrew Johnson
battalion is a game of 'monsters, explosions and senseless destruction'
where you choose to play one of four giant monsters and go rampaging
through a small town destroying everything in sight. Of course this gives
the military a chance to go blow something up, so pretty soon the shells
and the energy beams are flying.
battalion is Power Macintosh only
battalion is freeware
battalion is an arcade game
battalion is written in OpenGL(r) and was originally written for Silicon
Graphics machines. It has now ported to most flavours of UNIX and now the
Macintosh.

Subject: [*] Dicer 1.1 -- Dice-rolling utility
For those who have lost their Monopoly dice, or those who are serious about
polyhedrals and role-playing games, Dicer will roll all sorts of dice, from
the six-sided to, if you should wish it, a seventeen-sider (?). It can also
roll specific ranges -- for instance, if you want to roll a number between
10 and 20 but don't want to do all the math (even though the formula is
included), you can tell Dicer to roll the range for you. It also keeps
running totals, so you can roll seven d10s and sixteen d6s and see what the
total is. Includes some groovy sounds and a complete documentation.
Requires: HyperCard 2.2+ or HyperCard Player (2.2+) Prefers: Color monitor
(there is a little bit of colour) Fee: A postcard.
It's a game utility, so it should go in the games folder or in a game
utility folder (if there is one) -- all IMHO.

Subject: [*] DynRisk 4.0.1
DynRisk is a tool for doing probabilistic risk analysis. The program offers
powerful modeling capabilities, and is based on influence diagrams and
Monte Carlo simulation. Even large, complex models integrating many
different types of risks can be built and analyzed very fast. The demo
version is fully functional except that model files cannot be saved. You
can, however, run simulations and save and analyze result files, just as in
the full version.
Cool Features:
* Drag and drop icon/folder interface similar to the Finder.
* Integrated modeling and analysis environment.
* S-curves, Histograms, Scatter plots, Linear/Non-linear curve fitting,
Line/Bar/Pie charts, etc.
* Criticality and sensitivity analysis.
* Extensive AppleScript support
* Extend models by linking to Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Project,
HyperCard, or AppleScript Applets.
* Automatic model documentation (RTF format or TEXT format)
* Include graphics, sound and aliases anywhere in a model by dragging and
dropping from the Finder.
* Merge one model into another by dragging and dropping from the Finder.
* Include historical data in models by using resampling.
System requirements:
* Macintosh
* System 7.1 or higher
* At least 8 Mb RAM
* At least 5 Mb free hard disk space

Subject: [*] Filips Finder Scripts 1.0.1
Filips Finder Scripts 1.0.1 is a collection of AppleScript programs
designed to simplify the work in Finder. They provide a convenient way to:
*change type and creator on files
*add suffixes to file names, or remove suffixes from file names
*create an alias (without the word "alias" being added to the file name),
and choose where it should be stored
*create a new and empty Suitcase file
*move items to the Desktop folder, or to the Trash can, etc...
The scripts require AppleScript, but no extra Scripting Additions apart
>From Apples standard kit. Filips Finder Scripts is freeware.
Improvements in version 1.0.1:
* TypeCreator handles multiple files in a better way than before, e g you may
change only the creator on several files of different types.
* SuitcaseMaker works considerably better
* plus a few bugs fixed in the other scripts

Ghost is a useful application for hiding important files on your hard disk.
I suggest you either keep it (or an alias of it) on your desktop. To use,
simply drag any file or folder onto the Ghost icon. The file will instantly
disappear (no need to restart).
Ghost is the best file hiding utility because it does three things to
protect your file:
1. It makes the file/folder invisible. This means it cannot be seen from
the finder.
2. It locks the file and its name. This will ensure that no data is lost
>From the file. (Or its name changed.)
3. It changes the file type and creator. This will make the file a
different type than what it was before using Ghost. So if anyone does find
it, they will not be able to use it.

Word Finder v1.0 - =A9 1996 Barry Byrne
Word finder is a small Macintosh application for looking up words of which
some letters are already known, such as in a crossword. It has a dictionary
of over 100,000 words. It can also search for words or anagrams that are
contained in a jumble of letters.
Word Finder is a fat binary application, so it runs natively on PowerPC or
68K machines.
It requires System 7.0 and needs about 300K of RAM (prefers 400K+) and 1Mb
on disk.
Word Finder can be freely distributed, provided the 'Readme' file is
included. Word Finder is postcardware, which means that if you use this
program, you should send me a postcard from where ever you live. If you
don't want to send a card, you can send me an e-mail, but I would prefer a
card!

Yep. Netscape (and other web browsers) can load web pages & graphics from=
your local hard drive instead of from the net.
In fact, there's a commercial utility called "Web Whacker" which can=
download (or "whack") entire web pages, including graphics, to your hard=
drive. It'll fix any links within or between the pages you download so=
that they point to the downloaded files. Links to pages that you don't=
download are left as is, so they still point to the original sites.
You can get a demo version at . Main restrictions are a=
1-month limit; a limit of 10 "whacks" (but you can specify any number of=
pages to be downloaded in a single "whack"), and it inserts a "downloaded=
by Web Whacker demo" blurb at the top & bottom of each page.
The full version costs about $40-$50 and can be ordered online or from=
mail-order vendors like MacZone.

In the CC prefs, on the "Files" panel, there is an option to "Show Shared

I believe this option defaults to "off". If you turn it on, you should

Subject: freeppp2.5v2 bug fix
Today I got the terror of a supposed debug only version cutting my
umbilical cord to the world wide web.
I tried to put back files from the buggy version 2.5 into extensions
and preferences. But I got the same goofy error messages like "too many tcp
connections" (too many, too many ?! 0 evidentally is too many already if it
won't connect, thoroughly wierd) or even less information like "cannot
connect" or "can't make a socket connection".
Moral : never trust the feedback of an internet ap.
But, what do you ask, you may well ask. Well, I'll tell you, though I
feel thoroughly mortified.
I had to resort, in the older version, to using apple guide and looking
for tcp related stuff (hey fetch gave me a keyword, tcp).
Apple guide automatically opened this control panel which told me that
it was changing my settings to something less crazy (maybe not in so many
words).
I then tried it and it worked with the old version. Then I tried the
new version and it worked too.
Summary :
Somehow, during installation, tcp/ip setting had been switched somehow
wrong. Having apple guide open it, switched to something where zero was not
too many internet connections.
Hope I connected with some of you too! Hope this helps.

What about stubborned software stories?

But when it came to install FreePPP.2.5v2, the installer told me that he

If I send a fax from within that application it appears as a 1/9th size

Well, OK, I'm _going_ to blatantly plug a web site... mine
The most =

it in other messages, and I thank them. I've put a lot of work into it =

As for the utility you mentioned, unfortunately, the "plug-in" to version =

outdated or misleading. A few are actually incorrect. However, to put in a =
good word for them (which they might be due, seeing how many reported =

very favorably to the comments I emailed them about their database. They =

do it for them

Both of these are listed in The InformInit, which is available from the =

First, Faxcilliate does indeed work with Supra's 28.8 modems. Second,
when you upgrade your modem, leave the Faxcilliate program already on

Through these years he has kept this list running with very little asked in
return. Fantastic job!
Cheers,
Gordon.

battalion is a game of 'monsters, explosions and senseless destruction'

the military a chance to go blow something up, so pretty soon the shells

Cool Features:
* Drag and drop icon/folder interface similar to the Finder.
* Integrated modeling and analysis environment.
* S-curves, Histograms, Scatter plots, Linear/Non-linear curve fitting,
Line/Bar/Pie charts, etc.
* Criticality and sensitivity analysis.
* Extensive AppleScript support
* Extend models by linking to Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Project,

Filips Finder Scripts 1.0.1 is a collection of AppleScript programs

*add suffixes to file names, or remove suffixes from file names
*create an alias (without the word "alias" being added to the file name),

*create a new and empty Suitcase file
*move items to the Desktop folder, or to the Trash can, etc...
The scripts require AppleScript, but no extra Scripting Additions apart
>From Apples standard kit. Filips Finder Scripts is freeware.
Improvements in version 1.0.1:

Ghost is the best file hiding utility because it does three things to

the finder.
2. It locks the file and its name. This will ensure that no data is lost

Open a copy of the Aaron extension in ResEdit. Go to WPRF, I believe (this =
is from memory). There are two ways to change it: 1) Set the "zoom" to off =
or no; 2) Set the number of steps in the zoom to "0". Save the file, move =
the copy into your extensions folder, remove the original, restart...

In the CC prefs, on the "Files" panel, there is an option to "Show Shared
Libraries".
I believe this option defaults to "off". If you turn it on, you should
be able to see and manipulate LibMoto and your other shared libraries.

Hello all
What about stubborned software stories?
I was using a beta release of FreePPP 2.5v2 until final version came in. So I
downloaded
it from Info-Mac. Nothing wrong till now.
But when it came to install FreePPP.2.5v2, the installer told me that he
couldn't install
anything because I was not using Internet software, which was obviously wrong.
Here is the exact message I received:
"Your Macintosh does not have either MacTCP or Open Transport installed. You
must install
Open Transport or MacTCP before FreePPP can be installed"
Since then, FreePPP 25v2 refuses to install in my Mac, since he thinks I have
no
TCP
connection, even though I showed him I have...
What can I do to 'persuade' the installer to be good to me?
My system: Mac LC 475, 8Mb, System 7.5.3, MacTCP 2.0.6.

I have this problem in two differetn applications: SuperPaint (but not
always, it only just appeared recenlty in a specific document now occurs
regularly with SuperPaint) and SimpleText
If I send a fax from within that application it appears as a 1/9th size
image in the corner. Setting the document size in SuperPaint confirms
that it is the normal full page size, but that the printer size is 9 times
a regular page size (perhaps not that exact ratio).
I've had the same thing with SimpleText, where the resultant fax is like
4 point type..
what is causing this?
Anyone experience this before?

Well, OK, I'm _going_ to blatantly plug a web site... mine
comprehensive guide to extensions, control panels, and system information =
available is The InformInit. A number of Info-Mac readers have recommended =
it in other messages, and I thank them. I've put a lot of work into it =

As for the utility you mentioned, unfortunately, the "plug-in" to version =
7 of Startup Manager which "gives info on almost every extension" is very =
limited in content. In their quest to provide info on a large number of =
inits, they have neglected the "usable" content of that information. I =

listing no more than the "type" and "creator" codes of an extension or =
control panel. There are many entries where the information is either =
outdated or misleading. A few are actually incorrect. However, to put in a =
good word for them (which they might be due, seeing how many reported =

very favorably to the comments I emailed them about their database. They =

With LW 8.4...
If I'm generating a batch of PostScript files, I can set all my desired

I can review all settings without using the mouse to go into sub-dialogs.

Both of these are listed in The InformInit, which is available from the =
