Subject: (Q) Default paper tray and envelope tray

I have a LaserWriter Pro 600 and two questions:

(1) Where can I obtain the Postscript code that will switch the default
tray to Multi-purpose?

(2) I installed a new Envelope Feeder today. The PPD now says I have it,
but neither my 5300 or 6100 can see the tray as available in the Print
dialog box? Both are running Laserwriter 8.3.3. Is this a known bug?

I just upgraded my Aaron to 1.4.1 and now there is this annoying new

old "stupid mac trick" from the old Mac Classic days.

Anyway- does anyone know if there is a way to get rid of this zooming

Subject: Any Limitation from PowerTower's Design?

One of the systems I am considering for purchase is Power Computing's
PowerTower series, especially PowerTower 180e. (Others are PowerMac 8500
and 7600.)

Since PowerTower series' design is supposedly based on PowerMac 7200, I am
wondering what design limitations there are for future upgrades and
compatibility.

I am aware of the lack of RAM interleaving and AV features. I also believe
that it does not offer SCSI-2 out of the box.

What other caveats are there that I need to consider before purchase?

Thanks in advance.

Here's something that I'd like to contribute to your listings:

Recently there has been some talk at www.macintosh.com that Citibank's
Apple card program may be on its last leg. I called Citibank & they said that
the program is currently "under review".

Rumor has is that "Apple Bucks" may stop accruing in October, and
all existing "Bucks" may need to be spent by the end of the year.

If this is true, its a real shame...its nice to earn 2-5% back on
credit card purchases, especially since the bucks can be used for any Apple
products (with Citibank's program, my Powerbook 5300cs was only $1300).

The current version of Applescript, 1.1, runs fine on sys 7.1 (also 7.0 if
you install the Apple Event Manager extension as well). The basic
Applescript package, including the Applescript extension, Script Editor and

There are few of them available, depending on what you need and amount
of money you are willing to spend.
There are few Berkely SPICE ports for Mac and PMac available in info-mac,
just check out /sci directory (or search hyper-archive for spice).
In commercial level, there are ICAPS by IntuSoft (http://www.intusoft.com),
which is Spice with schematic capture, scope and a lots of models. It's quite
good, but it has some interface quirks. That's what I'm using, anyway.
The other one is SMASH by Capilano Computing (http://www.capilano.com).
It's not exactly Spice, but true mixed-mode simulator that uses SPICE
sintax for analog part and event-driven simulator for digital part. It
doesn't have schematic capture, but Capilano makes and excellent schematic
capture programm, DesignWorks, which produces output that Smash can
understand (or so I'v been told). I looked at the demo and it seems to
be pretty good, but I never used it. Both of these programms are expensive,
profeccional-level simulators that can be used for real-life work. ICAPS
costs about $2000.00 for whole package (you can by spice part only for about
$500.00) and SMASH goes somwhere from $3000.00 to $10000.00, depending on your
needs.
There is also cheap (about $120.00 full, $40.00 student) Spice with
integrated schematic capture, mady by Biege Bag Software, called B^2 Spice
(B-square Spice). It is good for students and such, since it can't use
external models and input spice decks. They have www homepage, but i don't
remember html for it.
There are also Electronics Workbench, which is a decent schematic capture and
simulator programm, for about $400.00, although it is not nealry as powerfull
as SPICE or SMASH, but much easier to use. I don't know contact info for them,
but you should be able to get by doing Alta-Vista search. I believe that
there are HSpice for Mac, but i'm not sure about it.
Few years back, when I was looking for Mac-based simulator, I investigated
what was available, and found that there were quite a lot of choices I could
make. I went for ICAPS for simulator and DesignWorks for schematic capture.
I remember there were lot more available, but I forgot the names.
Hope that helps.

Subject: Hard drive space problem

My PowerMac 7100/66 has a 250mb hard drive with about 8MB available unless
I boot without extensions. Without extensions the drive has about 33MB
available.

My guess is that the Memory control panel is responsible for this since the
difference is the value in the adjustable window of the Virtual Memory
section.

What I want is to have Virtual Memory on at the minimum value (1 megabyte)
since conventional wisdom is that, in general, this model will perform
better with Virtual Memory on. This would give me a total of 25MB: 24MB on
SIMMs and 1MB virtual. The virtual memory section says the hard drive has
33MB available on disk and 24MB available built-in. The window with the
arrow adjustment can be as low as 25M or as high as 33M.

About This Macintosh claims: Built-in Memory 24,576K, Total Memory 25,920K
and 25,920K used as RAM on Hard Drive (the name's been changed to protect
the guilty).

Either something is not right or I do not understand the Virtual Memory
settings. The extensions I use are pretty much standard Apple with a few
others thrown in. The non-Apple extensions have been on and off without
affecting the hard drive available memory.

Am I forced to turn off virtual memory?

Thanks in advance,

I assume you're at the user settings card in the home stack, and don't
have buttons available for anything above 2.

Some versions of Hypercard had higher user levels hidden on that user
settings card.

In the message box, type "set userlevel to 5".

Show buttons on that card, and you should see a big white one covering up
the rest of the user levels. Delete it. Voila.

If that's not the problem, then apparently you have a copy of Hypercard
Player, and in that case, the answer to your last question is "Yes.".

Folk, a puzzlement that maybe y'all can help with.

I snagged the new LaserWriter 8.4 driver (all five HD floppies worth)
and installed it on my home IIci and my office Q650/PPC. I tend to let
myself be the guinea pig before I foist new stuff on colleagues/spouse.
Saves wear and tear on my body.

I've seen no problems with the new driver on my office machine ('cept
the multiple-screen PRINT dialog seems designed by MicroSoft), but it
is for sure goofy on the IIci. Both run Sys 7.5.3r2. At home it looks
like it prints, but something gets to the LaserWriter IIf at random.
First time is usually not the charm. Second time is usually the charm.

I'd been thinking I'd forgotten something or done something silly like
pressing cancel instead of print. Old folks do that. Leslye noticed the
same thing when she was on my machine (It's connected to the world. Hers
isn't), so I started checking for oddities. If I choose good-ole-LW
instead of LW8, no problem, mon. I suspect the 8.4 driver. I switch back
to LW 8.3.3 and all is hunky dory again.

This is depressing. Despite my experience, I still expect Apple to be
backward compatible in its wonderful new toys. I suspect I did something
terribly stupid and deserve to die. Y'all have any thoughts?

I want to buy at least one good Mac resource book pitched at the

but is nontheless a pretty sophisticated Mac user (i.e. me). The
ideal book should contain as much sort-out-your-own-disaster

past year or so and though I'd like to think that my troubles are
over with an imminent change-over to a Power Mac 8200 I'm
not holding my breath). The two possibilities that I know of are
the Mac Bible and Hayden's Maclopedia. I gather that the latter
is up to date with System 7.5.3 - but the publisher's data also
says it (the book) can tell you who Steve Jobs is - which sounds
a little Mac-for-dummiesish. Advice/comments on these - or
any other - possibilities would be gratefully received.

shop.

I need a program to run a Kinkos style operation. The LAN will have 7
MACs, 1 PC, and three printers on an Ethernet Network.

The program will need to track a customers time on and off any given
work station, it must have the ability to track all stations at the same
time (also need to think of future growth). Computer time will need to
tracked on a per minuet basis with a different price for design stations
and for word processing stations
The program will also need to track the printer output of each work
station, which printer was used, what type of print, different prices
will be charged for the type of print, type of paper, and size of print.
The program will then need to able to produce an invoice for the time on
the work station as well as the prints made from that work station.
I would like to administer this system from a MAC if possible, but we
would consider administering from a PC provided that we can have all of
our tracking and invoice features available for the MAC computers as
well.
I am looking for commercially available software if possable. I would
appreciate it if you could get back to me as soon as possible with any
possible sollutions and pricing you might have.

Subject: Mystery Extensions (Q)

I've found a couple of extensions in my system folder (7.5.3 update 2 on a
PowerMac 6100/60) that I don't remember installing, and I have no idea what
they do. I was hoping that some kind person might clue me in.

The first is a small (3K) extension called KarmaExtension. It has no
distinctive icon, and neither 'Get Info' nor ResEdit yield any information
whatsoever about it's developer, origin or purpose. Apple extensions
usually have some kind of copyright notice at least. What is this thing?

The second is a 40K extension called ASFU Fixer. It seems to have been
written by GDT Softworks, which is a company that sells, among other
things, Mac printer and networking software. However, I have no memory of
having ever bought any product of theirs, and I have no idea what this
extension does, other than display a rather strange animated icon during
startup.

Any info on either of these? Thanks.

I have a Quadra 630 and until recently, I was using an external 500Mb APS

work well for a short time, and then I noticed that for no reason the APS
drive light would go on and it sounded like the disk was being accessed
even though I wasn't using any apps or accessing any files on the APS
drive. It didn't seem to cause a problem, so I didn't worry about it. Then
the problem got worse. The same sudden access of the APS drive, only now
the drive light would stay on and the APS drive would spin down and lock up
the Quadra. I'd have to restart. Eventually the APS drive seemed to crash
completely, and just wouldn't run with the Quadra anymore. I assumed it was
dead.

I've since bought a Logitec 1Gb drive and now the same thing is starting to
happen! What on earth is wrong? I can only assume now that it is some kind
of problem with the SCSI bus. I hope someone out there has the answer. I
don't want another dead drive. Thanks.

I went through this with a Zip drive last fall. It is difficult to find a
transformer that supplies sufficient power to drive the motor within needed
tollerances (consummer transformers are generally used for radios and low
poer electronics). Iomega had a universal transformer for the Zip drive
that cost an extra $50. I wish I had bought it in the US. Once in Europe,
Iomega has several tech support offices and I had to call around for help.
I eventaully purchased a European power supply from Iomega in Germany, but
it took me 4 weeks of correspondence and call. I also paid a premium. It
worked well once it was set up.

I used to encounter it routinely with Netscape 1.1N under System 7.5.1 and
7.5.3. Since updating Netscape, I haven't encountered it any more.

Hope this helps. Cheers,

Subject: Using the "@" on a German keyboard

I can not believe it, still so many good ideas how to simply input "@" on
the German keyboard. Look in the computer manuals and play with "Key Caps"
in the apple menu. For those, who have problems: Not all fonts show "@". The
easiest way: Use "Option-Shift-1" and you are right there.

Subject: WANTED: MS Flight Simulator for Mac scenery

Mac enthusiasts,

I need your help. I have been unable to locate a vendor that is still in
existence that makes scenery files for Microsoft's Flight Simulator 4.0 for
Macintosh. Microsoft's product sales staff have been unable to give me a
number for a company that has not gone out of business (Mallard Direct) or
been bought out by Microsoft (BAO Publishing). Please email me with info on
a vendor making such a product.

Sincerely,
-Tom Davis
