Subject: [*] Aurora 4.1.1

Aurora is a control panel that allows you to color menus, buttons, windows,
and the text highlight color. It is a full replacement for the Color
control panel that Apple ships with all Macs.

Ever wanted a blue scroll bars? Give them a try! Ever wanted mauve menu
bar? Now's your chance! With Aurora, you are on your way to customizing,
and personalizing, your Macintosh!

New in version 4.1.1

% Fixed but that incorrectly updated the set menus when Removing Aurora.
This is only cosmetic.

New in version 4.1:

A lot. Aurora 4.1 is a total, ground up rewrite. Here's a list of new
features:

% Support for small monitors (broken in 4.0, sorry!)
% Support for multiple color sets
% Totally redesigned main window that shows all your color settings in one
window.
% Totally redesigned set editors that show the color of a given attribute
next to the name
% Support for changing the highlight color -- replaces Apple's Color
control panel!
% Even more balloon help!
% Removing Aurora also restores window and control colors
% More robust error handling
% fixed some drawing bugs (and a long outstanding GetFontInfo() bug)
% A "Current Environment" set that when selected will keep your system
colored the way it was when you started -- an "undo" of sorts
% Easy registering with Kagi Software

Subject: [*] AutoMenus Pro 3.2

AutoMenus Pro is a control panel that makes menu use (especially those
pesky hierarchical menus) much easier. It can be set so that menus will
drop down when the cursor is placed in the menu heading or it can be set to
drop down a menu after a click of the mouse. Once down, a menu can be put
back up automatically or with the click of the mouse. What makes AutoMenus
Pro so useful is that the menus stay down without the need to hold down the
mouse button.

AutoMenus Pro offers a large selection of customization features, giving
YOU control of how you want your menus to operate.

Once you get used to AutoMenus Pro you will wonder why Apple didn't include
something like this as a standard part of the system software.

Version 3.2 Changes:

* WOW! AutoMenus Pro is now PPC native!!
* New order options, we now accept VISA and MC and have a toll free order
number!!

Subject: [*] Computer Cuisine 3.2

IMPORTANT: This version of Computer Cuisine, will *only* work with
=46ileMaker Pro version 3.0 or later. If you have FileMaker Pro 2.1, you'll
need to download an earlier version of Computer Cuisine.

Version 3.2 includes:
=C4 Over 125 Pre-Entered Recipes!
=C4 Expanded Print Menu!
=C4 Color Printing!
=C4 Large and Small Recipe Printing Options!
=C4 Recipes That Print Perfectly to a 3x5" Card!
=C4 A "Recipe Notes" Area For Quick Notes On Each Recipe!
=C4 Easy Conversion Menu For Quick Calculations! =C4 Expanded Functions!
=C4 ....and more!

The high quality graphics contained in this software package are simply
better than any other recipe program available for the Macintosh. Period.

Have you ever wanted to find a particular recipe, but didn't want to sift
through pages and pages from your favorite cookbook? Have you ever wanted
to search all your recipes for a certain ingredient? Have you ever wanted
to give a particular recipe to a friend, without having to go through the
hassle of jotting down the thing word for word? Now you can. And Computer
Cuisine is the tool that will make it happen.

What is Computer Cuisine?

Computer Cuisine is a Macintosh file for use with FileMaker Pro, by Claris
Corporation. This template will allow you to conveniently view, print,
sort, file, organize and save your cooking recipes. It's features include a
well designed layout that makes adding, viewing, sorting, finding and
printing a snap. In addition to the simple layout, Computer Cuisine allows
you to add an infinite number of your own recipes to the existing ones.
This will allow your recipe database to grow and grow! But with 125 recipes
already included, you're already well on your way!

Buttons are added to the top of the layout for added convenience. For
example, you can sort all of your recipes with one click of your mouse.
Computer Cuisine will then alphabetically sort your recipes alphabetically
by the recipe's name. This creates an "index-like" listing much like you
may find in the back of any normal cookbook you may own. And with the
extensive search capabilities already built into the program, you will now
be able to search through all of the entered recipes with the touch of a
button! You don't even have to know the exact name of the recipe, or
ingredient.

Computer Cuisine also makes printing your recipes a snap! With the simple
"Print Menu" button placed at the top of the layout, you can quickly choose
to print your recipes in color or black&white, or large or small! The
"large" option will print recipes to a clear 8-1/2"x11" sized sheet. And
the "small" option will print recipes that fit perfectly to the size of a
3x5" card when folded in half!

to make HomePage. Let's make "Home page" with CW9. The "emptyHTMLv3" are
CW9 project file. HTML tag of approximately 450 is registered with this
project file. If you are a computer programmer, you can understand a good
point of emplyHTML. It is more superior in editing of multi files such as

Subject: [*] Fonts Manager 3.6.2

Fonts Manager is similar to the System 7.5.x Extensions Manager, but it is
more like a Desk Accessory. It allows the enabling and disabling of font
suitcases and printer fonts in 'Sets'. It supports export of 'Sets', import
of saved 'Sets', Balloon Help, and a Help Topics system. It works on ALL
Macs with System 7.1 or later, including 7.5.3, without modifying the
NORMAL startup and operation of your computer. Thousands worldwide running
all kinds of Macs have switched to Fonts Manager to get 'Up & Running'.

NEW in 3.6.2:
- added a progress window for saving 'Sets'
- removed all customer feedback considered politically incorrect to an
anonymous software developer (I wish I could tell you the whole story on
this one!)

NEW in 3.6.1:
- fixed a minor bug in the Open 'Sets' (import) routine

NEW in 3.6:
- Save 'Sets' for export purposes (great for site-license standardization
of sets, or to upgrade beyond version 3.6 without losing time invested in
creating sets -> Apologies for not bringing this back sooner!)
- Open 'Sets' from previous export (this is the companion to the Save function)
- command-period disabled for quit (only command-Q or Quit from the file
menu works)
- cleaned up quite a bit of internal code for speed

NEW in 3.5.2:
- NEW progress bars (no more guessing what's happening)
- faster launch
- ignores extra folders in Fonts folder, instead of just hanging or
crashing (although the Fonts folder should seldom have folders inside it,
I've now allowed for that, just in case you've got a specific requirement,
like with some Japanese fonts, or in case that's part of your font
management strategy)

Available at
,
,
AOL (Computing/Software Libraries/Desktop Publishing or Software Search).

Shareware fee is $10 for Fonts Manager (FREE to registered users of ALL
earlier versions). $More for the Mac OS 8 version when available (save
time/hassle - pay now). Site licenses available at SUBSTANTIALLY REDUCED

Subject: [*] Gallery 1

With Gallery 1, I introduced a slightly irregular publication featuring
samples of poetry and short prose from various works-in-progress, as well
as original graphics. While I believe there will always be a traditional
print media, I think the creative possibilities of electronic media have
only just begun to be explored. Getting published as a serious artist,
outside of small presses has never been easy, but there has always been the
option of self-publishing, as Walt Whitman and William Blake knew. In their
spirit, this eLectronic chapZine is offered.

This issue of Gallery is free. I'm not asking for any fees because this is
an experiment in electronic publishing. As the sole author and creator, I
retain all publication rights, however, you may feel free to share it with
others, under the following conditions:

1. You may not sell either the electronic chapbook or any of the

chapbook, including this notice;
3. You copy all accompanying documentation; and,
4. You may not, under any circumstances, misrepresent the contents as the

This archive contains 10 new board layout files for Game of the Winds 1.0.

Game of the Winds is a board game which is also known as Mahjongg. When you
start Game of the Winds, 144 tiles are arranged on the board in several
layers. Every tile is marked with a chinese symbol. The layout of the board
is determined by a layout file.

The aim of the game is to remove all tiles from the board. Tiles can be
removed from the board by selecting two matching tiles. Two tiles match if
they are marked with the same icon.

This update does not include Game of the Winds. You can download Game of

Subject: [*] Sword Dream 1.7.1 for PPC problem and fix

A few PowerPC users recently wrote me about a problem in Sword Dream 1.7.1.
On inspection, I found a bug in the current version of the CodeWarrior
Pascal compiler (the development system we are using for Dream). My code is
safe and sound, but the compiler inserts a bug. (You are interested in the
technicalites? Byte-aligned access to data fails and returns garbage if
made inside a nested function call. OK, so maybe you don't care). The net
results is that now and then Dream will refuse to load an encounter, say
that the scenario file is corrupted, and quit. This patch works around the
bug.

This patch can be applied over any localized version of Sword Dream 1.7.1
(English, French and Italian). It is only useful for PowerPC users. It
should also prevent similar problems - that is, surfacing of the same
compiler bug in other parts of the Dream application - in the future.

Yes: KeyQuencer; v.1 was $10 shareware; v.2 is ($30?) commercial. Try for
info: mailto:[email protected] (Binary Software sales); if that doesn't
work, try the author, mailto:[email protected] (Alessandro Levi Montalcini).

This past week I updated three System 7.5.3 machines (a Quadra, a non-PCI

Dr. Norton objected afterwards that the bundle bit was incorrectly turned
off. Inspection of the AppleShare file inside the Installer folder shows
that the bundle bit there is on, so the dirty work was done by the
Installer itself.

This is not the first time that an Apple Installer has gotten the bundle
bit wrong. If I remember correctly, about a year ago Network Software
Installer 1.5.1 turned the System file bundle bit off, with interesting
consequences.

I've had replies from several people who are experiencing the same problem
with various versions of System 7.5, US and non-US (guessing from email
addresses, that is). However, I've discovered it's not unique to Stuffit
Expander: since posting, I've noticed the same thing happen with some

Expander 4.02 which some people mentioned is being distributed with
Netscape 3.0, as it's not on the info-mac archive or Aladdin's website yet;
one reply said this fixed the problem while another said it didn't. :-/

Anyway, I'll drop Aladdin a note and see what they say.

(For anyone who missed my original Info-Mac posting, I'm experiencing a bug
where a .sit file which has just been expanded remains selected when I
single-click another file in the same window. This only seems to occur when
Mac Easy Open is active, and I don't remember seeing it before I got
Expander 4.01.)

Subject: CYBERPUPPY UNLEASHES FIRST INTERNET "KID BROWSER"

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

CYBERPUPPY UNLEASHES FIRST INTERNET "KID BROWSER"

MENLO PARK, CA.--August 16, 1996--CyberPuppy Software, makers of the
CODIE award-winning product Monstrous Media Kit (formerly Kid's
Studio), is breaking new ground by releasing the first Internet browser
for kids, called PigMail.

While most browsers concentrate on rendering pages of data to the user,
PigMail's focus is on the visualization of other kids. "We knew there
was a problem among young and novice users in terms of being able to
find people on the Internet," says president Neill Kramer. "We=B9ve
solved the problem by designing an interface that can support thousands
of users simultaneously, under low-bandwidth connections," says Kramer.

The revolutionary on-line exploration and communication system is a new
kind of tool, an intriguing combination of a directory service and an
immersive environment. "It's a product that is the result of many years
of research and architectural design," says Christopher Haupt, chief
technology officer.

So what can a PigMailian do?
PigMail places the user in a compelling visual space, based on a
geographical metaphor. All of the other PigMailians are immediately
visible in the form of little dots on the surface of the continents.
>From there the user can zoom in to cities and buildings, eventually
finding like-minded individuals (and over 2,200 links to
geographically-oriented web sites). A handy magnifying lens enables the
user to explore deeper levels of the product as well.

Once a user finds someone, he or she can double-click on the person's
avatar. An ID card appears and the user can learn about the favorite
hobbies of the potential new friend, as well as email the person or
link to his or her home page.

Primary Features:
- Graphical representations of all users of the browser simultaneously.
- Communication in the form of e-mail.
- Content in the form of appropriate, geographically-oriented web
sites.

Future versions will include parental controls for email and chat.
Avatar customization, personal space construction kits, and other
modular components can be dropped into place as background downloads.

All in all, the PigMailian will have the first kid browser on the
Internet and will return to the product over and over again in order to
make new friends and discover new features of the product.

Currently, PigMail is free and is available for Macintosh computers. A
Windows version should be available by the beginning of next year.
Users can download PigMail by visiting our web site: =

Subject: Drive that dissappeared then reappeared a month later

Thanks to all who responded to me personally about this problem. Basically,
my drive dissappeared after not having been used in a month. It was gone
for a month, and then magically reappeared on its own.

Apparently, this has something to do with "stiction": static friction.
'cause the drive is old (and apparantly there have been problems with the
drive that came with the old II and LC series) and hadn't been used for so
long, combined with the humidity (MOntreal is VERY) humid in the summer,
the bearings fail to supply enough lubrification and the drive can stop
spinning.

The solution:

1. Let the drive come around (as did mine), although this can take a while,
if ever.
2. give the drive case a light tap, but be careful because you can damage
it at the same time.

this is also that my four-year-old drive is probably going, so it's a good
idea to back up just in case....

Subject: Odd problem with Word 6.0.1

Well, I sent away for the free Microsoft Empowerment Pack for the Mac CD, since
it included a free upgrade for Word from 6.0 to 6.0.1, and Internet Assistants
for Word and Excel. I haven't looked at IA Excel yet, but the IA Word is a
beta version and the disk comes with a letter suggesting I download the
final version from MS. The system software upgrade included on the disk is
not relevant for my machine so I didn't use it.

*Anyway,*, I ran the Word upgrade and installed IA Word. I have since
noticed that the button for toggling the display of the paragraph/tab markers
no longer works: the display is stuck showing the markers. Now, this is
not too much of a problem usually since I prefer having them shown anyway, but
it is a problem when editing equations etc which require the ability to turn
it off. I uninstalled IA Word thinking that might have something to do with
it (and it seems like a totally useless program anyway since it is a lousy
html editor), but that did not fix it.

So before I go back and reinstall the original Word 6.0, does anybody have
any suggestions? Is it worth keeping the 6.0.1 upgrade? Has anybody else
noticed the same problem? I am running a Performa 6300CD, 16M RAM, 32M virtual

Web access speed varies a LOT. Sometimes I get close to 3K/second, other
times I'm lucky if I get 300 bytes/second. It depends on your ISP, the
machine you're trying to connect to, the time of day, ... Mostly it's just
a bandwidth problem, too many people trying to access the same machine at
the same time, or too much traffic along the path between your machine and
the machine you're talking to.

If your ISP has a proxy server, you might try configuring your web browser
to use it. It can make a big difference in some cases.

And if all else fails, turn off the "auto-load images" option in your
browser, so that you don't have to wait for all the graphics to be
downloaded.

Hell, my syseetm eats up 15-16 Meg of RAM! And I don't even have
GX or QuickDraw 3d installed! Of course, it uses about 2Meg on some

Subject: The Secret Fate of your missing MacWorld gift issues

I can see how frustrating and annoying it must be to those of you who
sent in your cards to Apple but never got your freebie copies of
MacWorld.

Just to set your minds at rest, what happened to your free issues is
that they sent them to me instead :-)

I bought my PowerMac about a year and a half ago and sent in my card.
There were a couple of months after that with no free magazines
arriving, but then they began to come. Three months went by, with an
issue of MacWorld arriving for each, the last accompanied by dire
warnings that this would be my last issue and I should take up their
offer of a cheap subscription fee, which I did not do. Fourth month
comes and hey, another free MacWorld. Fifth and sixth months, likewise,
and ANOTHER notice that this will be my last free MacWorld and wouldn't
I like to subscribe at the low low price?

Next month came and I didn't see a MacWorld in my mailbox, so I bought
one from the news stand. Came home and found another copy in my mailbox
waiting for me after all.

By the time they finally quit arriving, I'd received 13 months of free
magazines. Go figure!!??
